YouTube videos and media headlines love to blame the low water levels at Lake Powell on a single, dramatic narrative: a “hot drought” driven by climate change where rising temperatures are vaporizing the Colorado River.
It’s a convenient story, but it ignores basic thermodynamics, observed watershed hydrology, and century-old math.
Here is the real science behind why the “hot drought” narrative falls apart—and what is actually draining the Southwest’s reservoirs.
1. The Headwater Lie: Below Freezing is Still Below Freezing
The headline claiming a 1.5°F to 2.5°F temperature spike relies on a statistical trick: averaging temperatures across the entire basin, from scorching Arizona deserts up to Colorado’s highest peaks.
- Where the water starts: Over 85% of the river’s flow comes from high-altitude snowpack above 9,000 feet in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.
- The basic physics: If an alpine snowpack sits in −10°C air in January and the air rises to −8°C, the snowpack does not melt. Sublimation at these temperatures is negligible compared to liquid spring runoff.
- The takeaway: Snow sublimates primarily due to direct sunlight and wind, not minor bumps in sub-freezing air temperatures. Attributing massive flow loss to “warm air” in the dead of winter violates thermodynamic reality.
2. Model Manipulation: The “Residual Attribution” Error
How did computer models “prove” that heat stole the river? Through a residual attribution error.
Hydrologic models (like those popularized by Udall & Overpeck) use programmed equations where air temperature acts as a primary control knob for water loss. When researchers fed precipitation data into their software and noticed real-world river flows were lower than predicted, the software automatically attributed the “missing” water to the variable that had gone up: temperature.

3. Dark Snow and Parched Dirt: The Unsung Water Thieves
Two major physical drivers get buried by the “hot drought” narrative, yet they are backed by direct field observation, not computer inference:
- The Soil Sponge (Antecedent Moisture): Multi-year hydrologic analyses show that root-zone soil moisture accounts for up to 74% of runoff variability. When deep soil layers dry out during multi-year dry spells, the parched ground acts like a giant sponge. When spring snowpack melts, the water recharges the dry dirt first before reaching a stream gauge. Models mislabel this subterranean absorption as “atmospheric heat loss.”

1953–1967 Drought:

2000–Present Dry Era:
[Natural Low River Flow] MINUS [Maximum Human Water Use (~15-16 MAF)] = Reservoir Collapse
- The Legal Mistake: In 1922, the Colorado River Compact legally allocated 17.5 million acre-feet (MAF) of water per year based on an unusually wet 20-year streak.
- The True Yield: Tree-ring records covering 1,200 years prove the river’s long-term natural yield is only ~14.5 MAF.
- The Collapse: During the 1950s drought, cities were smaller, agriculture was less intensive, and the basin wasn’t drawing its full share. By 2000, human usage and evaporation hit 15+ MAF annually—exceeding what the river produces even in an average year.
- The Wet Year Illusion: Critics argue that wet years (like 2023) should have refilled reservoirs if heat wasn’t the problem. The reality is simple math: withdrawing 15+ MAF annually from near-empty reservoirs prevents recovery regardless of temperature. A single wet year cannot refill 50 million acre-feet of depleted storage when human diversions swallow the surplus.
The Bottom Line
Lake Powell isn’t collapsing because 1.5°F of air temperature vaporized the mountains. It is collapsing because a standard, historically recurring dry spell hit a river system that was already being pumped dry past its physical limits.
Blaming “hot air” gives water managers, bureaucrats, and politicians an easy out to claim an “unprecedented act of nature”—rather than admitting they spent a century writing paper promises for water that never existed. The crisis is driven by natural precipitation cycles, land management (dust), and structural over-allocation. Temperature is a secondary factor heavily exaggerated by models that fail to account for real-world ground physics.
There are idiots all over. The simple fact is that more people use more water. Expecting Las Vegas and Phoenix to grow without using more water is a fairy tale for idiots.
“Stop Making Sense”- the Talking Heads
There are many problems with the Colorado river flow. But to say the 1.5 C over normal temps is not one of them is silly.
Higher temps evaporate more water: in the mountains, in the reservoirs, in the river and most importantly in the land irrigated. So think.

But air with greater moisture content can also provide more of the blessed precipitation as either rain or snow.
The temperature control knob is not wholly negative.
If in fact, most of the 1.5 C of warming is during the winter (I don’t know for this region), then average snowpack may go UP over the next few decades.
You are correct on moisture content. But greater moisture vs greater evaporation, it seems evaporation wins. Especially in the southwest. And snowpack? Why are so many ski areas closed?
Does evaporation win at -5C?
“So many”? Ski areas are businesses, and are subject to the same economic conditions all businesses face. If a few of the smaller ones have closed, it’s because they could not stay competitive. Ski areas used to be very much dependent on the whims of mother nature, but then snow making was discovered, and areas which had it had a competitive advantage. Many smaller areas in northern New England closed over time, because they couldn’t keep up with the changing business environment. With the right business model however, smaller areas can and do survive, and even prosper. In fact, some smaller areas are coming back now because of what they can offer.
Four years ago we had record snowpack on quite a lot of these Colorado River watersheds. Jackson, Wy, which is not on this watershed, but is close and the only snowpack figure I have in mind right this moment had something like 500 inches in 2022-2023. The Wasatch was buried as was the Green River Basin and surrounding mountains. Wildlife mortality in Wyoming and Utah tells the story.
The biggest problem is that Las Vegas, LA, Phoenix etc have huge populations and the Colorado cannot keep up filling reservoirs even when we have heavy snowfall. Nevada doesn’t even contribute to Colorado River flow to any significant degree, but look at their water usage.
Years of plus or minus a couple degrees centigrade are not at all uncommon in the West and we have to stop seeing such as the end of the Earth. The problem here is water usage by a population that no one anticipated in 1922, and is encouraged to move into the region endlessly.
California holds the largest share of water rights to the Colorado River Basin water.
Somewhat similar thing happened in Texas despite water plans after the 1950s drought. Texas in general, but Corpus Christ and surrounding areas in particular encouraged industry and population growth, similar to Texas Hill County and corridor from San Antonio to Austin and up. Great weather meteorologist on Corpus station did the proper science and after the ‘barn door was shut’ Corpus is chasing desalinization on a variable but substantially evaporation coast. Unexpected rain like last year saved it for a while, at least.

No, your claim isn’t viable since the purported evaporation increase would be very small against a massive reservoir with a shrinking surface area to evaporate from.

Decadal time scale variations in river flow do occur, though, related to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO).
Since about 2000, use of Lake Mead water has exceeded river inflow, causing water levels to drop. The negative phase of the PDO since that time has exacerbated the problem.

Snowmelt is Lake Powell’s source. Snowfall varies in cycles, like all precipitation. Therefore the source of Lake Powell’s water is cyclical. The point of the article was that the maximum allowed withdrawal from Lake Powell was set at the maximum inflow, not an average inflow.
Today the withdrawal rate has reached the withdrawal limit and the result is that Lake Powell is shrinking. We were on Lake Powell more than 30 years ago. The water level was well below the peak that year. The “bath tub ring” was clearly visible on the canyon walls, indicating the maximum water level. Today, the water levels are lower and dropping due to excessive withdrawals.
1.5 F not C, so about 0.8 C rise over average temps – barely noticeable
The problem is too many straws in the pot. The biggest is the 6 million acre-feet of Colorado River water each year consumed growing forage crops that are primarily used to feed livestock.
One takeaway is that is more complicated than the “right out of college” newspaper reporters and newscasters (pretty face and no substance) looking for their next, better gig will ever understand. It is always this way. To quote John Steinbeck, “And it never failed that during the dry years the people forgot about the rich years, and during the wet years they lost all memory of the dry years. It was always that way.”
Gee, who would have thought that building large cities in deserts would lead to excessive water extraction from the environment.
Not to mention green lawns and golf courses and fancy fountains in Las Vegas.
In 1930, when work on Hoover Dam began, Las Vegas had a population of around 5,000 and Clark County about 8,000. Hoover Dam … Lake Mead … hasn’t been deepened to add volume or capacity however today Las.Vegas has a population over 700,000 (100 fold increase) and Clark County has over 2.5M people, A 300 fold increase. It’s no wonder the dam is emptying.
I wonder if pipelines could be built from Missouri and Mississippi rivers? During flooding periods some of the water could be diverted to the SW.
Won’t do any good-those rivers are also subject to drought-did you see the pics of sunken riverboats on the Mississippi river high and dry riverbed a couple of years back? The real problem isn’t drought in the West-its population and water usage…live in the desert, be dry in the desert. Water is water, and when ya ain’t got it ya best figure something out.
That idea has been tossed around. It would be extremely expensive–the pipelines would have to be very long and go over the mountains. Since much if not most of the water is used for irrigation, it would have to be far cheaper to be economical. If all the water in the Colorado River Basin were used for municipal purposes, there probably would be enough as it were.
Maybe, maybe not-I’ve always heard (for what that’s worth) that a tremendous amount of water is just pssed away in leaks, lawns, and golf courses…how much somebody knows, but not me. I think also that Cali uses uncovered aquaducts or canals to move water, so water loss there too, I would think. Anybody?
I distinguish between agricultural irrigation and residential/commercial uses in cities. Yeah, golf courses should be low on the priority list, but irrigation use is very high and only economical because it is very cheap, relatively speaking. Farmers can’t afford to pay municipal rates to irrigate. In fact in western Kansas, some can no longer afford the cost of pumping out of the ever dwindling Ogallala (?) aquifer. That is being pumped dry to irrigate corn to make ethanol.
-and unfortunately making ethanol is not only wasteful of water, but marginal soils damaging, and overall a waste of energy to produce. The question then becomes do we use water for useful agriculture-like food-or for drinking water. The Ogallala has been abused and in trouble for years…not much hope there I fear.
The Ogallala’s problems are exacerbated by the fact that the states involved have different rules for water rights. Bottom line is we should not be growing corn in the very western part of Kansas–it is naturally too dry for that and is only possible by extensive irrigation.

The pumps required to lift the water to Lake Powell’s elevation would be enormous.
Drill some tunnels under the divide and divert some Platte river runoff from the South and North Platte Rivers Into the Colorado water shed. Compare that Tunnel Folly to some of the Green Folly being promoted.
There are people in Nebraska who have rights to that water. You can’t just divert it away.
Lake Powell OTOH is drying up trying to keep Lake Mead supplied
Glen Canyon and Hoover dams still open the gates every day in time to meet peak demand for electricity. If the goal was water conservation, they’d simply need to stop running the generators. All drinking, industrial, and ag water needs could be met by releasing just a comparative trickle, brownouts in L.A. would fill Lakes Mead and Powell in fairly short order. Or, we could have reliable NG or nuclear electrical generation, and accomplish the same result, at the cost of price supports and subsidies for a few fake renewable sources.
But the goal isn’t water conservation, but green washing the real cost of those fake renewables.

… under immense pressure from the feudal-lords of the coastal misanthropes, who promised the swindled Navajo producers (miners & engineers) equivalent jobs in the shiny-new wind & solar projects to be built all over their ancestral lands.
When the new projects failed to deliver, the power-deficiency was supplied by running the hydroelectric plants almost to the threshold of incapacity (literally, the levels dropping to that of the main intakes valves).

To assure you all that the grave hydrological threat to the region has always been FLOODs (Springtime snowmelts; Autumn-Monsoon), not from Drought.
The various dams (reservoirs) were constructed
(i) first, for flood-control, which relates directly to supplying a vast network of canals (irrigation) and ground-water restoration;
(ii) second for hydroelectric power, supplied to distant industries and communities;
(iii) third, for recreation (water sports, fishing) in the natural beauty of the canyons & mountains.
This is not complicated at all, don’t complicate it. Water is being drawn OUT faster than it can flow IN. That’s it. Stop catering to morons, tell them simple facts and WALK AWAY. Ignore them after that, they are f*cking idiots.
80% of the water in CA is used for business, mainly agriculture. The answer is simple …. eat more range fed meat and limit vegetarian food consumption. 🙂
They need to reprioritize usage to give municipal/residential use higher priorities regardless of whether the rights are junior or senior to agricultural rights holders. (My guess is that the bulk of the agricultural rights are senior to a lot of municipal rights.) This is fraught with problems not the least of which is that water rights are real property rights and confiscating (or reordering them by use priority) them is a taking under the Constitution.

You’re describing basic pan evaporation in a backyard swimming pool, but mountain hydrology doesn’t work like a shallow puddle in July. The piece doesn’t say evaporation doesn’t exist—it refutes the concocted claim that the modern dry era is a novel “hot drought” while the 1950s was just a “rain drought.” Blaming air temperature as the primary culprit ignores basic physics and real-world ground data:

It’s dry in the Laramie area this summer and so the dryness is a topic of local conversation. A fellow running the paint counter in a local building supply store told me this almost verbatim.
Now if a fellow who spends his days selling paint and supplies can get this story right, then what is wrong with “professionals” who probably earn twice or more what he does?
Another story is that Lake Powell and Flaming Gorge, and probably Fontenelle, too, are responsible for Lake Mead running so low that hydroelectric generation was suspended in April. Please return to the paint technician and have him explain it again.
I thought they cut back in early April, but from what news I can get on the issue, it looks like they are still talking about hydroelectrical power reductions. It’s going to become unavoidable.
I am just a regular, dummy, but it seems to me that if Saudi Arabia can use desalination facilities to produce water, then California could do the same. They would need to give up that “fast train” thing. And, they also might stop tearing out dams-just sayin’. I would think that if California could supply some of the water in the SW, perhaps the draw down could be reduced. Again, I am sure that smarter folks than I have already considered this strategy.
They have and Californians are against desalinization if it involves nuclear energy. They are boxing themselves in to a place from which there is no solution to their problems.
There’s something in the water in Cali-pun intended-that seems to pevent rational thought and problem solving…the high speed train to nowhere is a good example as Ihurley points out above. And then there’s the hydro and storage dam destruction…the Cali Dems are bugshit crazy.
Back in about 1998 or so, I went on a field trip in association with a group I belong to. We took (eventually) two tours into the greater Moab/Canyonlands area, and two different guides mentioned the amount of water consumed by the invasive tamarisk tree.
I know that in my area of the country, importing a tamarisk is prohibited by law; massive fines and a county order of removal/destruction is imposed on violators.
I do recall that the tamarisk were so prolific along the Colorado/Green Rivers, that views of the river(s) were often obstructed. I also recall that on a camping trip to Echo Park in Dinosaur National Monument, that there was a concerted NPS effort to remove/eliminate tamarisk within the park. We spoke at length with a ranger who was involved in the effort (he was checking our camping licenses for that night), and we agreed that removal was in the best interests of all recreationists.
My understanding is that Echo Park is now restricted, and no overnight camping is allowed.

There are trees that sequester water. By removing those trees (the ones I heard about are some sort of cedar tree) one can liberate water along some streams. This creates issues with water rights–who is entitled to the water that has been liberated? I don’t know if this is part of the issue with tamarisk trees.
