Wildfires in Canada have become a major story in the US because the smoke from those fires have traveled a very long way, covering the skies of cities in the Upper Midwest as far south as Chicago, over nearly all of Michigan, and to major population centers in the Northeast. Much media coverage blames the fires on human-caused climate change. But what does the actual data say?

Except Democratic Senator Patty Murray of Washington State and other climate realists have pointed out that in the past forest fire smoke from Montana, Idaho and Washington has been blown north across the Canadian border when winds were unfavorable. So the current problem has little to do with excessive fossil fuel use or poor forest management since both sides have experienced the same problem in the past. Besides these fires are often, if not mostly, caused by lightning strikes which are also beyond control. So if they’re in lightly populated areas with limited road access, how are fire fighters supposed to get in there in the first place? Incidentally, the critics seem to have overlooked the fact that a number of areas in Europe are having wildfire problems of their own; yet these are occurring where access is much easier and where fossil fuel use is limited more than in North America, but they’re still having to deal with them.

I wish there was a summary of important points or a timer marker indicating the start of each topic. All very smart, intelligent and capable people doing a great job.
I take the point that the fires are far fewer than some time ago. What I missed was the pre-Columbian native forest management issue where regular burning cleared undergrowth burdens and greatly decreased the ferocity of the fire and the damage to the ecosystem.
