The Guardian’s recent article, “‘My husband and daughter went down to the garage in case it flooded. Then I heard a strange noise’ – This is climate breakdown,” by Ajit Niranjan, presents the tragic story of a family caught in the Valencia floods of October 2024, framing the disaster as evidence of “climate breakdown.” This is false. History shows such storms and floods have repeatedly occurred in that region of Spain before, and the article ignores that important context along with other factors, like rebuilding in known flood zones, which made the recent flooding worse than it otherwise might have been.
The article asserts, “devastating storms hit the Iberian Peninsula, bringing the heaviest rain so far this century . . . scientists say the explosive downpours were linked to climate change.” The human tragedy is real, and the suffering undeniable. But The Guardian uses this story as a vehicle for a sweeping climate narrative that the observational record undermines.
A single storm—even a deadly, destructive one—says nothing about long-term climate trends. Weather is not the same as climate. Weather extremes resulting in floods have occurred in Spain for centuries, well before modern industrial emissions. Historical accounts such as those of the catastrophic October 1957 Valencia flood, which killed dozens and reshaped the city, or the 1879 and 1897 torrential rains that inundated large portions of eastern Spain, illustrate that intense downpours are hardly unique to the present era.
An example is a drawing from 1864, by Frederico Ruiz, which showed the scale and violence of flooding in Valencia Province, in Alzira, a city on the left bank of the Xúquer River, 45 kilometers to the south of Valencia in 1864.

In fact, peer-reviewed science shows a long history of such floods well before “man-made climate change” was even a buzzword and global atmospheric CO2 levels were much lower. One peer-reviewed study published in 1996 shows that floods there were far worse in the 1600s than today, as seen below.

The Guardian ignores this important context entirely, promoting the false narrative that climate change is responsible for or makes worse every present day natural disaster, notwithstanding history.
Observational climate data paint a more complicated picture than “climate breakdown.” The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), on Page 90, table 12.12 (seen below) states that it has low confidence in any global trend in flood frequency or magnitude.

Similarly, rainfall intensity varies strongly across decades due to natural climate oscillations such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Mediterranean teleconnections. None of this appears in the article, which instead wrongly implies a direct, linear link between fossil-fuel emissions and a single storm event.
If readers want data-driven assessments rather than emotional narratives, they can consult the Climate at a Glance summary “Floods,” which explains that global flood trends show no sustained upward pattern. Likewise, “Extreme Weather” summarizes that most categories of extreme weather—hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, heatwaves, rainfall—show mixed or declining long-term trends in the observational record. Climate Realism has documented many media misrepresentations of rainfall and flooding events, including their recent takedown of a similar BBC claim, “Flooding Facts Drowned by Climate Hysteria: The BBC Ignores Spain’s Weather History.”
The Guardian also fails to acknowledge the decisive role that local factors played in magnifying the Valencia disaster. The flood images in the article, showing submerged vehicles piled together and narrow streets acting as channeled torrents, make clear that urban design, impermeable surfaces, insufficient drainage systems, and inadequate warnings all contributed to the severity of impacts. The increased urbanization in a known flood plain was an invitation to the disaster that occurred. The woman at the center of the article concludes that the regional government’s failure to warn residents or provide preventive measures was the primary cause of loss, not the climate. Yet The Guardian still insists that the true antagonist is “climate breakdown.”
Natural climate variability, infrastructure decisions, and emergency preparedness determine disaster outcomes far more than marginal changes in global average temperature, a fact The Guardian ignores to the detriment of the truth and its readers. The Guardian’s assertion that the recent flood was unprecedented is flat out false, as similar or worse flooding events in the region documented in the historical record attest – floods that occurred long before CO₂ levels rose significantly .
By implying that a heartbreaking family tragedy is proof of global climate collapse, The Guardian irresponsibly misleads its readers, substituting emotional persuasion and advocacy with scientific rigor. Readers deserve factual reporting complete with historical context and data, rather than a false narrative that treats every intense weather event as evidence of a “climate breakdown.”

Personally, I find The Guardian terrifying…
That’s just what they intend. Frightened people will pay to find out more about what scares them. This is the current state of ‘legacy’ media’
And onto the next. The cyclones/monsoons have often been devastating, sporadically totally disastrous. But now they are mutated and more dangerous (supposedly).
“The fallout marks a grim escalation in deadly weather across the region that has been aggravated by the blanket of carbon pollution heating the planet.”
Mumbojumbo on steroids!

But not Iranian drought because that’s Allah’s will and not Gaia’s. Climate change works in mysterious ways my son but computer models know all.
Can anyone expect anything different from The Guardian which competes in the Climate Alarmism League whose other members are the BBC, the CBC PBS, NPR, CNN and any media outlet with a primary goal of disseminating environmental misinformation? So they never miss the chance for distortions, misinformation, exaggerations and outright lies that promote the climate crisis fairy tale. Except no one needs a degree in meteorology, climatology or environmental science to smell a rat whenever these outfits run weather/climate-related stories.
Correction, it’s disinformation, not misinformation. It’s malicious.
So malinformation then!
I use that word regularly to describe different aspects of the great climate scam.
A very apt description. 🙂
I kinda think of it as Gaian Scientology’s indoctrination.
What about just BULLSHIT?
The soil improvement derived from spreading the Guardian on the veg plot is well documented. It is so full of fertilisation your are closer to the truth than you might imagine. 🙂
Media are owned by the big money, the banks, The propaganda is pushed from the world government cabal, through their own media companies, the WEF and the UN. It’s a collaboration of evil entities who want to control the world.
Don’t forget the Bilderberger.
Very nice Anthony. The press is given far too much latitude, freedom of speech and freedom of the press is not freedom to lie and cheat. These jokers have been getting away with lying and cheating for far too long and it is time for them to stop. They are far more dangerous than dishonest, lazy CAGW scientists/academics.
I don’t know what you would recommend Bob, freedom of speech including access to a free press is a fundamental human right and in the US enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution.
The corrective to the likes The Guardian is more free speech as on this site.
Unfortunately in Europe and UK free speech is now under attack by NATO governments resembling the Warsaw Pact countries of fifty years ago.
“The corrective to the likes The Guardian is more free speech as on this site.”
I agree.
With free speech, we can call the Guardian out for its lies and distortions.
Calling out news organizations for their lies does have an effect. Their approval ratings are among the lowest around.
However, the Leftwing Media is still dangerous because they have influence over tens of millions of people. They still lead people astray every day.
And of course, people cannot govern themselves properly if all they get are lies and distortions. These lies and distortions cause voters to elect the wrong (Leftist) people which causes great misery among those governed.
The Truth will set you free. Lies and Distortions will get you Gavin Newsom and Ed Miliband.
I understand where you are coming from but I stand by what I said. These guys are free to say what they want but they are not free from the consequences. If they are found to be lying and cheating there should be consequences, not a slap on the wrist. Lying and cheating is not okay and yes even the press should be held accountable. This is not hard.
The desperation now on display by the climate catastrophist media is palpable.
Their credibility takes a dive with every doomsday story they publish.
And their pleas for paying subscribers occupy more screen real estate than the stories actually being presented.
The Gruniad reminds me of those hold-out Japanese soldiers discovered on a Pacific island in the 1960s who were still defending their position.
Climate has become so favorable for humans
that they need to dig up anecdotal stuff to make a point.
For some reason hypothermia related tragedies hardly ever get headlines though they are the most common.
It’s very difficult for hypothermia victims to call 911 or drive themselves to the ER.
Heat stress victims on the other hand –
“take a cold shower and call me in the morning”
Newspapers have a whole section called, “Sports.” Newspapers have one or more writers who write only on “Sports” — mainly the US big three, Baseball, Basketball and Football … and a little on Golf.
Newspapers report about the weather — mostly short-term forecasts — daily using information and data from (in the US) the National Weather Service and in some cases private weather forecasting companies. And of course, weather disasters (tornados, hurricanes, floods and snowstorms) are reported on the front page.
Newspapers know nothing about climate so they, for the most part, publish only stories with some exciting headline sourced from some warmer. Disaster sells.
I think I was in elementary school when I figured this out and limited my newspaper reading to comics and sports.
There’s a business that only gathers climate doomsday stories from all all over called Covering Climate Now.
They push-market doomism stories to hundreds of media outlets all around the world.
Of course the outlets are only too ready with run with any stories offering imminent destruction & doom – that’s what makes headlines and gets clicks.
And clicks sells ad pop-ops, so you know the rest of the story . . .
“substituting emotional persuasion and advocacy for scientific rigor”.
Mike, there are two professions that have no tolerance for that, scientists and judges. They no longer serve the common good when they put on an activist hat.
The Editor of the Guardian should be jailed for fraud and fake news.
Absolutely not. They are free to publish lies or distortions. It is up to the reader to determine that they are lying. There’s this little thing called freedom of speech. It even protects the vileness published by the Groaniad.
Agreed
The problem is a lack of critical thinking in the general population.
I agree with that strongly. This is one of the horrid outcomes of our dismal public education system for the past three-plus decades. That notwithstanding, we both agree that people have to be responsible for their own actions and decisions. It’s not good enough to point and shout, “They dunnit!”
Like we used to post in the ‘old days’, +10,000 !!!
When I took a critical thinking class in 1975, I had some reservations that it might affect my faith in God. As I aged I realized that the two are compatible.
Critical thought is all through the bible in many examples. Actually supporting the liberal political factions, the 700 Club and other pseudo-charismatic, profiteering ‘media productions’ campaigned against teaching it at that time and pressed for deletion from course lists. Satan is truly the great deceiver, using the guise of born-again Christians to hobble the thinking of the youth.
On another note, the North Atlantic hurricane season ended on November 30, with zero hurricanes making landfall on the continental United States. Notice how selective the reporting is on “climate disasters”, and how left-wing media make false statements so matter-of-factly. “The rain in Spain was caused by climate change. Period.”
The rain in Spain stays mainly on the (flood) plain.
No hurricanes hit the United States this year! Such good news!
We had a hurricane drought for about 12 years after Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. in 2005. After that, we had no Major Hurricanes (Cat 3, 4 or 5) hit the U.S. for 12 years.
Maybe we will be fortunate and we will get another similar hurricane drought like that one.
Think of all the billions of dollars saved and all the heartbreak prevented!
The Climate Alarmists didn’t have much to stress out about this year.
Climate change is all, about money and power. The coal kings had too much for too long and the oil barons are still the evil masters. What do we need to bring them down? Ah, Carbon – that should do it.
What? Carbon is the basis of all life – no matter – don’t confuse me with the facts.
It cannot have escaped anyone’s notice that the view of ‘climate’ is polarised into right wing – the haves, and left wing – the have nots.
Nuff said?
You might enjoy reading this:

Authority figures, foretelling
Hot doom (and our “myths” dispelling),
Cast foul aspersions

Now, shriller and louder they’re yelling,
To drown out the doubters’ rebelling!
New taxes are “just”
When you’ve gained public trust,
So “the questioners” (quickly) they’re quelling.
I’ve arrived at this realization;
Our industrial civilization
Can only be sin
If the ‘green’ Marxists win-
On their platform of demonization!
Ergo, Yes, I think I enjoyed it. Much the same point?
Climate change is everywhere. We don’t get as many vegetables from our garden in recent years because of climate change. And we’ve noticed more squirrels and deer going through our yard. Their population is growing. The number of deer hunting licenses was reduced 5 years ago because we don’t like bloodthirsty hunters killing for sport. We buy hay to put out in the winter to help the deer, and scatter nuts for the squirrels. We want wildlife to know we care. There are more raccoons and skunks now and we’ve started hearing coyotes at night. We haven’t seen any Nearsighted Vacuous voles in 3 years, though. It saddens us to see the loss of biodiversity in our own neighborhood because of climate change, but our Republican neighbors are happy because their water-hogging lawn isn’t getting damaged anymore. Our area in the southwest U.S. relies on water from snowpack. The ski resorts had record snowpack 2 years ago and this year we’re back to the beginning of another drought. All because of climate change. My wife is so worried about all this that our intimacy has suffered. I wish the government would end the use of fossil fuels so we can be happy again.
#metooclimatechange
Plant some Hosta and Daylilly. The Voles will feast. We are inundated here.
Remind your wife that fossilfuels are to thank for most everything she owns.
Learn the difference between weather and climate.
Did you forget the /sarc tag?
‘The rain in Spain falls mainly in Valencia.’
And by simply pasting the data plot into @GROK and asking if the data in the plot aligns with SUNSPOT data … magickly reveals the 4.385 octillion pound Gorilla in the room (The Sun) is the apparent driver of all this mess.
Wait, you mean that the tiny thing that is responsible for 99.9% of heat on earth is the control knob
and not the gigantic 0.04% co2?
Craziest thing I’ve ever heard.
The Guarniad is evil. Only eco-nuts and the BBC believe it.
You’ve gotta admit….they are adept at picking which news turd is going to float on the huge and expanding ‘net-enabled media cesspool…
If they didn’t, they’d be broke, and no-one would be catering for their target demographic of emotionally incontinent penguins.
Valencia was flooded in 1957. So a flood prevention system was designed and built. The course of the river in the city was turned into a linear park and the flood channel was routed around the city to the west. The plan was to flood empty land to the west of Valencia. So the eastern wall was built 1 metre higher than the western wall.
Since 1957 lots of houses were built on the previously empty land; lots and lots. And on the hills of the catchment upstream from Valencia.
When the 2024 flood came along, the flood prevention system worked as designed. No flooding in Valencia. Shame about the new suburbs.
Nothing to do with Climate. Nada.
One of the reasons I am so attracted to the WUWT site is its willingness to carry the nonsense stories put out by the Climate Alarmist community, with the Guardian and the BBC being the upper level examples of that Alarmist nonsense output. The opportunity of the well educated scientifically grounded readers to comment and take apart BBC/Guardian nonsense, then brings a welcome reality to the apocryphal musings peddled by that Alarmist media.
The Guardian stands tall as the finest example of a once well managed and almost balanced news gatherer. Unfortunately in these modern days of instant world wide news content they have chosen to go full on ridiculous in their output to try to retain readers. The result of this hype is taking them down the same road to oblivion suffered by papers like the News of the World. It won’t be too long before we are presented with the London Bus on the far side of the Moon type of story just to confirm their descent into obscurity that awaits them.
Whenever I see a nonsense Climate Alarmist headline in the news, I come to WUWT and will find that WUWT will give the other side of the story, which usually means the Climate Alarmist story is BS (Bad Science).
WUWT gives us perspective that we don’t get from the Leftwing Media.
I admire you greatly Anthony, for having the patience to waste your time refuting this bible of lies known as the Guardian. It serves as a print version of the BBC.
Anthony has to debunk the same dozen or so Climate Alarmist memes over and over and over again.
Happily, Anthony has the facts and the historical data on his side. The Climate Alarmists have nothing.
To be clear, UK police are arresting people for posting memes, pictures taken in other countries and standing silently on sidewalks, yet they openly allow The Guardian and other “papers” and “news” media to spew lies at will. Seeing a pattern yet, chi’drens?
Correction.
“To be clear, some UK police etc. ….”
As the father of a serving Scottish Police Officer I can say that in some rural areas the local command structure has decided that it has better things to do than being woke.
They will be on the inside looking out, his government keeps doubling down on authoritarian control.
Strange how so many people fail to grasp that rivers flood. To them, a flood is an unnatural thing.
I forget. Is it the Guardian that keeps asking for money so it can fight Trump? Or something akin…
