From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

Today’s misinformation from the BBC:

Temperatures in the seas around the UK and Ireland have soared in the past week with some areas now 4C warmer than normal, with potential implications for marine life and people going swimming.
One of warmest Springs on record is driving the surge, as high temperatures and weak winds warm the top layer of the ocean.
Marine heatwaves in the UK are thought to be a relatively new phenomenon but they are expected to increase in frequency and intensity.

I don’t think sea temperatures of 13C rank as a “heatwave”, certainly not if you fell into it!
But the misinformation lies in the statement that “One of warmest Springs on record is driving the surge”. What is driving the surge is the record amounts of sunshine seen so far the spring. It is the sun which warms the seas, not climate change. And it is the same sunshine that has brought a warm spring on land too.
And sunny weather also brings light winds, which prevent that warm surface water from mixing with the colder water below.

I seem to remember April 1980 and the first half of May being very sunny in Scotland but the graph suggests that April wasn’t. The first half of May was though. April and the first half of May 1980 were very dry – but it didn’t stop raining after that and the summer was a washout.
now 4C warmer than normal, with potential implications for marine life and people going swimming.
Wow, A whole 4°C warmer than normal. Likely because Land Temps aren’t following the narrative with the exception of the worst sited stations sea temperatures are now being maligned. Certainly no impact on swimming. People regularly visit waters in the 38°C range…hot tubs and thermal ponds. If anything it will make colder oceans more enjoyable to the masses.
“…now 4C warmer than normal, with potential implications for marine life and people going swimming.”
Anyone who has taken a dip in the seas around Great Britain will know that they are rather cold and that has always been the problem. Hence people fly south to warmer climes. Nobody showers or bathes in water at <=16C do they? and that’s mid summer.
If the water got up to 20C would that really be a problem? No, of course not. But these are desperate times and any old scare will do right now, anything to create a sense of fear or worry. Funnily enough, Jordan Peterson has an article in a couple of publications…
“Jordan Peterson: Net Zero Alarmism is a Mental Illness“
is the climate apocalypse narrative just a scientific theory? Or is it instead a system of belief, unmoored from the objective world, with essentially psychological factors playing the primary role in its initial formulation, current maintenance and widespread dissemination? If the former, then I’m out of my wheelhouse as a commentator, and deserve, arguably, to be called on it. If the latter, however, then I am in my true element, as a psychologist, trained in the analysis of belief – and, more importantly, ethically bound as such to indicate falsehood in conceptualisation where I see it.

And for the staff at the BBC
“Worry, anxiety, stress and panic are often the emotional expressions of catastrophic thinking. Technically, catastrophizing is an exaggerating, irrational, style of thought where you painfully blow real or imagined disasters out of proportion.
Fortunately, catastrophic thinking is correctable.

They ain’t short of funds.
“If the water got up to 20C would that really be a problem?”
I grew up in the Cronulla area south of Sydney.
I found the winter water temperature of 16-17ºC a tad cold without a good wet-suit on.
Summer temperature of around 22-23ºC were glorious. !
Figures like that will have Auntie in a fit of jealousy.
Brighton UK on the other hand , only reaches a max of 18C, and is only 12C in May and 8C in Feb March
.. so the only thing with 4C warming would be that blokes could swim without their tackle shrivelling to pea size or smaller.
There is the shrinkage issue…
Otherwise known as George Constanza Syndrom..
But, but, but, won’t the coral reefs on the UK coast bleach out and die due to warmer water?

If you go back to this day in 1700, you find that the Sun is 180,000km closer to the Earth today than it was back then. I would expect that to be influencing the ocean temperature at 55N rather than some fantasy CO2 induced warming. 300 years of gradually increasing sunshine from March through to June inclusive will cause some noticeable springtime warming.
The revenge will come with a war a white late autumn to winter in the NH because the solar EMR from Spet to Dec is down markedly this year from last
” … with some areas now 4C warmer than normal … “
BBC … please define normal. Show your work.
It will be some shallow sea water pool just off the beach in full sun.
Sort of like what happened in south Florida a few years back.
A single sensor in ~6 feet of water in an inlet/cove with a dark/black mucky bottom at low tide registered a high temperature. This made all the news and was coupled with a minor coral bleaching event that was not all that close.
As it turns out, the temperature spike was very short lived.
As it turns out, the air above the water was normal for that time of year.
The speculation is that the sensor contacted the muck or came close to it and what was being read was the temperature of the bottom muck, not the water itself.
All it took was reviewing the data and measurements, which none of the alarmist media bothered to do.
Is this it?

Those of us who spent their childhood plodging in the North Sea off Tynemouth would welcome warmer water.
Is the BBC warning us that these weak winds will increase in frequency?
Because 90 billion of British tax payers money is being bet on wind power being viable.
Wind power at present is less than 3GW. It has been low for a month.
That 90 billion looks a rather bad investment…..
I grew up in Wallasey on the Wirral Peninsular opposite Liverpool. It was half a mile to the coast. The Irish Sea was never warm
There should be a website called “BBC Synonyms For You”. If you click on it, then enter any simple adjective (e.g. ‘Tepid’), it provides you with a comprehensive list of only the most hammy and wonderfully melodramatic options you could possibly use.
O/T A Word from Donald Trump:
Starmer assured Equinor that the Rosebank oil development in the North Sea would not be blocked. They invested £1.6bn before he did block it. Understandably they are not happy!
Today’s decision reversed tomorrow.
Starmer’s promises have the same value as used toilet paper.
DJT is telling the truth once again, but I just wish he would capitalise words correctly and stop overusing FULL CAPS and exclamation marks!!!
At 13C my kids insisted on swimming at the beach. I put my toe in and did not go in. They were blue when they got out.
When I was a kid, I took swimming lessons at the local pool. It was cold. We came out with blue lips and shivering.
My comment on the BBC website:
Redge12:13 22 May
Marked down by idiots but unchallenged.
A couple of things –
What are potential implications? An implication that doesn’t even exist yet? Completely incomprehensible nonsense, either written by a dim-witted scribbler, or a “climate scientist”.
Fodder for the ignorant and gullible?
Cold sea yesterday at the Needles
Well, it is possible that swimmers and fish will boil in the UK waters with that 4 degree Celsius rise. I mean, it is dangerous. The fish of course have nowhere to go in those shallow waters, right?😀
Water boils at lower temperature in a vacuum. It must be the perpetual vacuous state of Climate
ScientistsSocialists that is causing the “4°C Hot Water Issue”I wonder if the upward trend in March/April sunshine that has been seen since around 1990 might have something to do with reductions in air pollution since then?
Not sure, but it is likely that the reduction in particulate pollution would lead to a slight increase in temperature, otherwise why would Climate Socialists be looking at solar blocking as a solution?
Also not sure why you got a down vote so I’ll reverse it😁
Well, I can tell you the warming is definitely NOT global! Very cool spring in the midwestern US, still running the heat in April and haven’t turn on the air yet (In Kansas City at the end of May). And the extended forecast has us only in the 60s-low 70s through the end of the month. Send some of that warmth our way!
Oh this is so boring. Why don’t these eco terrorists give it a rest. They are getting nowhere with their lies and childish propaganda.
The MSM has cried wolf for too long, and people are tuning out.
“I dont think temperatures of 13C rank as a “heatwave”
No indeed, they rank as a marine heatwave, which is what the article says with reference to being 4C above normal.
https://ecowatch.noaa.gov/thematic/marine-heatwaves#:~:text=Marine%20heatwaves%20are%20events%20where,more%20days%20in%20a%20row.
“One commonly used metric defines a marine heatwave as an event where temperatures exceed the 90th percentile of 30-year historic values for five or more days in a row”
“It is the sun which warms the seas, not climate change. And it is the same sunshine that has brought a warm spring on land too.”
If climate change causes longer spells of settled weather (eg anticyclonic spring weather) then indeed climate change would cause more sunshine in that situation. As in the CC comes before the longer sunshine.
“And sunny weather also brings light winds, which prevent that warm surface water from mixing with the colder water below.”
From the artcicle …..
“as high temperatures and weak winds warm the top layer of the ocean.”
Get Away !!
And another statement of the Bl**ding obvious ( Fawlty Towers) which is implied, of course, in the article.
Best laugh of the day.
Keep it up
Given the parlous state the Met Orifice has with their surface weather sites, due to the incompetence of past and present employees, why should anyone think they have the remotest clue what the real temperatures of the seas around the UK are.!
Here in Bude the sea in the sea pool is at 14 degrees C today, which is perfectly normal for North Cornwall in May.
Breaking news! High pressure system brings warm, sunny weather. Brits confused by the unusual, and welcome sunshine. “My skin is turning pink! What is that? A rash?” exclaim thousands of worried citizens basking outdoors in the temperate conditions.
Despite the arguable bit of warming in UK waters, the rest of the ocean has cooled dramatically, with temperatures in all regions the coolest since March 2023.

Don’t know why that chart is so fuzzy, trying again
Ok, what did you do the make the chart appear as “not fuzzy” ?
Clearly see the effect of the El Nino event from 2023 has now subsided back to normal.
None of this has anything to do with CO2 or any other human causation.
NB : I am not “Ron Clutz”, I am someone else “rudely interrupting”.
Short answer : What Ron did was replace the original “Use the ‘Attach image file’ icon in the WUWT comment editor” option with “Type in a direct link to his website” instead.
.
(Very !) Long answer :
If you “hover” your mouse pointer over the original, “fuzzy”, image your browser should “pop-up” a box with the link in plain text (a security measure so you can check where you’re going before clicking on a “suspect” link).
That link starts with “[ h t t p s : ] //i0.wp.com/wattsupwiththat.com/…”, which indicates it is an image file uploaded to the WordPress website on behalf of WUWT, and ends with “…/[filename].png?fit=300%2C97&ssl=1“.
That “?fit=…” parameter is interpreter by your browser “renderer” on how to “resize” the original (PNG) file to “best” fit into whatever window size you have chosen for your browser on your monitor.
In the vast majority of cases, unfortunately, the result is a “fuzzy” one.
Solution for laptop / desktop computers (may not work with “smart” phones ?)
“Right-mouse click” on the image in the OP, then select the closest option to the “Open Link in New Tab” one that my browser implements.
The image will be clearly / sharply rendered at full size in a new window.
The usual [ “Ctrl” plus “+” ] and [ “Ctrl” plus “-” ] keyboard shortcuts — or the “press the Ctrl key with your left hand and roll the mouse scroll-wheel forwards or backwards” option — can then be used to zoom in and out as required for each individual user’s eyesight.
.
In his second post Ron typed in the text (minus the original “h t t p s :”)
“//rclutz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/hadsst4-202504.png”
The WUWT HTML code will pick up on a line of “plain text” that “just happens” to be a valid URL ending with “.png” or “.jp[e]g” and go off and download and render it “inline” when sending pixels to your browser’s code.
NB : The individual delays in doing this fro each such “embedded image” results in “jumps” in WUWT comments pages on the user’s computer screen until all such images have been fetched and then inserted into the “correct” places.
.
PS : On the WUWT site comments with more than 3 or 4 (or maybe even 5 ?) embedded links will automatically be “flagged for human moderation”, and so may be delayed for an hour or two (or more, even CTM has to sleep occasionally …) before becoming visible to the general public.
This count is for the sum of ordinary links / URLs plus “URLs to image files”.
If you click on chart, it will expand and become clear. To return to text, click on the “X” in the lower right corner.
Shown below in the chart are plots of temperatures at the Furnace Creek weather station in Death Valley from 1922 to 2001. There is no warming at this remote desert. In 1922 concentration of CO2 was ca. 303 ppmv and by 2001, it had increased to ca. 371 ppmv. This data falsifies claim by the IPCC that the increasing concentration of CO2 in the air causes an increase in surface air temperature.
The chart was obtained from the late John Daly’s website: “Still Waiting for Greenhouse” available at: http://www.john-daly.com. From the home page scroll down to the end and click on “Station Temperature Data”. On the “World Map”, click on a region to access the temperature charts from the weather stations located there. John Daly found over 200 weather stations that showed no global warming up to 2002.
Send a copy of this email to all your friends and to your elected politicians. if everybody learned of John Daly’s website, all this greenhouse gas, global warming and climate change nonsense would end overnight.
“Temperatures in the seas around the UK and Ireland have soared in the past week with some areas now 4C warmer than normal, with potential implications for marine life and people going swimming.”
A Layman’s question.
Don’t the oceans have currents?
Even if the ambient surface temperatures for a UK spring made for a warm surface water temperature, wouldn’t that water have moved out to sea by now?
Why a “sudden” spike in only a week?
How much energy is required to raise the temperature of the seas “around Britain” 4C in a week? Wouldn’t that require a geological event?
