A farmer in South Korea’s Gyeongbok Province carefully tends to his potato field, while halfway across the world the engines of a thousand cars idle on an American interstate highway. These seemingly disconnected scenes share a bond through the fertilization effect of atmospheric carbon dioxide, which has been greening the Earth for decades.
Yes, the CO2 effluent of tailpipes and industrial flues are good for plants and all of life, contrary to the alarming tales that make this invisible gas an environmental bogeyman. Increasing CO2 concentrations are literally making the world greener, and in many cases, it’s sending crop production to record levels.
A 2020 study, funded by Cooperative Research Program for Agriculture Science & Technology Development, reported that potatoes grown in an atmosphere of elevated CO2—similar to what might be expected in coming decades—didn’t just survive but thrived!
The plants yielded a “distinct increase in growth and development and canopy net photosynthetic rate during tuber initiation and bulking. Consequently, biomass and canopy net photosynthesis increased, and tuber yield increased by 20.3%,” the researchers wrote.
This isn’t just good news for potato farmers. The CO2 fertilization effect plays a role in the photosynthesis of all plants, and an increase in the gas acts as a kind of turbo boost. Significant increases in yields are seen in wheat, rice, soybeans and maize—all staple crops that feed billions.
As CO2 concentrations rise, the water requirement for many plants decreases, making them more tolerant of drought – a scourge of farmers for millennia.
In the U.S. too, agriculture has flourished because of the additional CO2 in the atmosphere, including in the agricultural heartland of the Midwest. As the data analysis in the CO2 Coalition’s report on the Midwest shows, it is very clear that a warming climate and the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide composition are increasing crop yields in the Midwest’s corn and soybean regions.
As Americans contribute roughly 14 metric tons of carbon dioxide per person annually, those emissions are fertilizing crops across the globe.
The greening effect extends far beyond agriculture. Satellite data from NASA has attributed the increased greenness over the past 35 years to the combined impact of elevated CO2 levels and optimal temperatures for plant growth.
The rising emissions of China and India from their increased use of fossil fuels have contributed significantly to this global greening and has benefited ambitious tree-planting programs and intensive agriculture. Certain countries in Europe have registered an increase in forest area as well. In fact, “36 countries are gaining more trees than they’re losing,” reports the World Resources Institute.
In fact, the rate of greening due to CO2 will be much higher than the rate of browning from the expansion of arid landscapes. Researchers at a Chinese university say that “by the end of this century, drylands will expand slightly by approximately 5%, while vegetation productivity will increase by about 50%.” Elevated CO2 impedes the expansion of drylands and “greatly promotes vegetation growth with increases in both leaf assimilation and canopy foliage,” they say.
Dr. Indur Goklany reports that 70% of Earth’s recent greening is attributed to emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels and that “fossil fuel dependent technologies have increased agricultural yields directly or indirectly by at least 167%.”
Whether it’s the tomato plants of Europe or the tropical forests in India, it’s clear that CO2-enriched air is greening the planet, and we as a society have been positive contributors to that. You might say that CO2 is the green energy for plant life.

The elites attempting to sell the Climate Hoax could care less about greening or the humans that benefit from it! Right now they are focused on destroying traditional family farms wherever they can so as to maximize control over food resources! If they were actually concerned about humanity, they would be pushing for regenerative farms and ranches, and would stop spewing the plant-based diet dogma so dear to the hearts of Climate Communists and Seventh Day Adventists! It’s religion!!!!
From what I have seen, in practice, “regenerative farming” is slightly less strict “organic” farming, which is more mysticism than agricultural science. Unless one is trying to market products to those sold on the nonexistent benefits of organic produce, it is much lower yield, and with actually more persistent pesticides being used.
“Unless one is trying to market products to those sold
on the nonexistent benefits of organic produce . . .“

The “Organic” movement is a way to sell blemished produce at a higher price than the picture perfect stuff.
Tom,
I don’t get into all the woo-woo stuff! I’m more partial to techniques like those espoused by Allan Savory, and others, where ruminants are rotated on pasturage to aerate and fertilize the topsoil.
Instead of large industrial farms with chemical laden crops, we can support family owned farms by buying from farmer’s markets and local ranchers! This year I split a lamb with a neighbor, so I have a freezer with lots of lamb burger and chops to broaden my diet choices! Next year I’m going to get at least another half of a lamb, and I may buy half a steer as well. I’ll continue raising tomatoes and jalapeños in the summertime, with some raspberries, corn and string beans next year if I can figure out how to keep the deer away!
”Organic” food (like “health food” stores) has always mystified me, as the people that eat (and frequent) them seem to be weak and sickly; presumably from a lack of fat and protein!
Doing things like “zero till” planting, which does depend on glyphosate suppressing weeds, very much reduces erosion and fuel usage in farming. “Regenerative farming” only seems attractive to those who would not “get” Penn and Teller’s mock petition to ban DHMO—DiHydrogenMonOxide.
There is a vicious interaction between liability lawyers and “organic foods” advocates, with RFKjr being a prime example. Playing off ignorance and chemophobia pays.
The key is amino acids. Hard to get the right mix with a vegetarian or vegan (hardly different) diet.
Skip the steer.
Put a couple a deer in your freezer.
Win Win.
Given a choice, I’d rather bag an elk or an oryx!
That’d be a 300 or 338 Win Win Mag!
Not once is it mentioned during these expensive COP love fests, CO2 is literally saving many millions more lives, because more people are finally being fed decent meals, than are harmed by fossil fuel use.
Such love fests should be outlawed, exterminated, a pox on humanity
FOSSIL FUELS ARE A BLESSING FROM GOD. Use them wisely
Let the attendees reimburse all of the money they have ever waste on their scam!!
1. More rain is not a problem.
2. Warmer weather is not a problem.
3. More arable land is not a problem.
4. Longer growing seasons is not a problem.
5. CO2 greening of the earth is not a problem.
6. There isn’t any Climate Crisis.
-Hurricanes/Tornadoes show no trend.
-Any increase in heatwaves is offset by decreases in cold snaps: which provide a net benefit since cold is much more harmful than heat.
We can only hope that CO2 levels continue to rise and that they can warm the planet a bit more to help get us out of the ice age and CO2-starvation that primary producers have been suffering under for many thousands of years. Humans, being an african species, stand to benefit enormously.
CO2 is near its lowest level in 600 million years
People need more food when it is cold.
7. The steady expansion of the oceans is not a problem
8.The reduction of world poverty is not a problem
9.The ongoing technical advance of humanity is not a problem
10.The human race is not a problem to planet Earth.
It sometimes seems like GangGreen would welcome an invading alien race to Earth with open arms. If they haven’t already!

It’s a cookbook!
It’s very evident, to anyone who takes notice, that the countryside has never looked greener than it does at present.
Even the increased fuel load is less inclined to burn.
The CO2 non-problem is becoming evermore apparent.
That is so true, unfortunately there is one problem.
I am having to cut the grass and trim the hedges more frequently now.
Very true, Rod. You’d think I’d remember that too, what with all my lawn to mow.
Absolutely right.
Much more trimming of bushes and trees during the past few decades
I mowed my lawn in Vermont, in middle NOVEMBER.
My water hose for washing cars is still hooked up!
I bicycled my standard round, about 4 miles, with just a flannel shirt
I lived here 40 years.
Don’t forget about pulling weeds.
Notes without comment – story tip – from UK Telegraph.
Ford is to cut 800 jobs across Britain as its rival Nissan warned the Transport Secretary that electric vehicle (EV) targets risk “irreversible” damage to the car industry.
In crunch talks with the Government, manufacturers told Louise Haigh on Wednesday night that “urgent action” on strict EV sales quotas was needed to protect UK jobs and investment.
It came as Ford said it would cut 4,000 roles across Europe by the end of 2027, with Germany and the UK worst hit, as it reduces production of key electric models.
Ms Haigh hosted executives from seven major car companies, industry groups and charging companies at Downing Street amid growing warnings that the Government’s zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate was strangling sales and production.
A government spokesman said the Department for Transport planned to work “constructively and in close partnership with the sector”, in a sign that more support could be provided.
However, the Government stuck to a Labour commitment to phase out sales of petrol cars by 2030.
The ZEV mandate requires 22pc of automakers’ cars sold this year to be electric, climbing to 28pc next year and continuing to increase later in the decade.
Companies that miss the targets face fines of £15,000 per vehicle or being forced to buy credits from manufacturers that exceed the quota.
Should have included the part about current sales. EVs are now 18% of new car sales this year, whereas they need to be 22% to not incur the tax. But the problem is, the 76% of EV sales are company cars, on leases, because they are advantageously treated from a tax point of view. They are much lower benefits in kind than ICE. Only 20% of EVs are private buyers. Private buyer sales fell by 11% this year.
So two things must happen. One, car companies will ration, and are rationing, the production of ICE cars. This then leads to a slowdown in the industry as a whole, and that is what the manufacturers are now protesting about.
But the second thing is, floods of unwanted EVs come on the market from the expiring company car leases. To move them the leasing companies have to accept price cuts, which in turn threatens the business model. The business model depends on selling the cars at a profit, or at least breakeven, on the used market, as they come off lease. You cannot do this is prices are dropping like a stone. Or rather, you can, you can still make money if you get enough profit from the leases, but the only way is to raise the lease price of the EVs as compared to ICE…
UK net zero is a total mess, and with the closure of nuclear and the end of life of gas generation it is only going to get worse. Insulate your houses, install some form of backup heating that does not require electricity, buy a generator if you can find someplace to install it. Get minimal lighting to run off a large battery so at least you can manage without candles when the power cuts come. Buy a recent model ICE car, preferably mild hybrid. And get ready for more and more idiotic and draconian attempts to make you buy an EV, a heat pump, and (probably) use a bike. Its back to the 1950s, or maybe earlier.
UK energy policy is now squarely in the hands of religious fanatics who are not interested in arguments from reality. The Lord will provide, and they are saving the planet and leading the world. Right.
The UK net zero is a total mess?
No, no, no
The UK in its entirety is a total mess, a steady downhill slide since WW 1
Get rid of all that dysfunctional royalty/title entitlement crap, for starters
I’ll be helping more with that greening again this winter. After I retired I could finally be home to contract and monitor the additions, remodeling, and other home improvement projects that I’ve been wanting to have done for years. Now it’s done.
A New 30′ x 35′ attached garage with a 10′ slab covered by a gable roof in front. Heated with it’s own gas fired ceiling unit.
The new 12′ x 19′ sun room addition with five 52″ x 40″ sliding glass windows and a sliding glass door required it’s own mini-split HVAC unit. It has become our favorite room in the house.
A 26 kW Generac whole house generator installed. We lost power 7 times this year. The longest period was 36 hours. No more!
Though I had a new, more efficient Trane NG HVAC installed for the house I still needed more NG capacity because of the garage furnace and the generator so new line from the step down regulator hidden in by a bush in the yard the house and a new regulator and higher capacity meter were installed.
When I had the new furnace put in I also had a new large cold air return put in the ceiling over the fireplace insert. The idea is to try and heat the whole house minus the garage and sun room, by just running the furnace fan when we have a fire in the insert. Won’t be long until I will find out well that works.
Lots of other remodeling done also but that described is what has increased our carbon foot print.
More power to you, more CO2 in the air, plus you are adding to the GDP
You should get a Gold Star
Net-Zero is a leftist, woke suicide pact.
We need much more CO2 to promote flora and fauna in the world
.
Plants require at least 1000 to 1200 ppm of CO2, as proven in greenhouses
https://www.windtaskforce.org/profiles/blogs/hunga-tonga-volcanic-eruption.
.
Many plants have become extinct, along with the fauna they supported, due to a lack of CO2. As a result, many areas of the world became arid and deserts.
.
Current CO2 needs to at least double or triple. Earth temperature increased about 1.2 C since 1900, due to many causes, such as long-term cycles, fossil CO2, and permafrost methane which converts to CO2.
.
CO2 ppm increased from 1979 to 2023 was 421 – 336 = 85, greening increase about 15%, per NASA.
CO2 ppm increased from 1900 to 2023 was 421 – 296 = 125, greening increase about 22%
.
Increased greening: 1) Produces oxygen by photosynthesis; 2) Increases world flora and fauna; 3) Increases crop yields per acre; 4) Reduces world desert areas
The ozone layer absorbs 200 to 315 nm UV wavelengths, which would genetically damage exposed lifeforms.
.
Energy-related CO2 was 37.55 Gt, or 4.8 ppm in 2023, about 75% of total human CO2.
One CO2 ppm in atmosphere = 7.821 Gt.
Total human CO2 was 4.8/0.75 = 6.4 ppm in 2023. See URLs
.
CO2, human plus natural, to atmosphere was 421.08 ppm, end 2023 – 418.53, end 2022 = 2.55 ppm; to oceans 2.3 ppm (assumed); to forests and other sinks 1.55 ppm; natural CO2 increase is assumed at zero.
.
Forests net CO2 absorption = absorption 15.6 Gt – emission 8.1 Gt = 7.6 Gt = 1 ppm
https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-satellites-help-quantify-forests-impacts-on-the-global-carbon-budget/
.
Mauna Loa curve shows a variation of about 9 ppm during a year, due to seasons
Inside buildings, CO2 is about 1000 ppm, greenhouses about 1200 ppm, submarines up to 5000 ppm
.
Respiration: glucose + O2 → CO2 + H20 (+ energy)
Photosynthesis: 6 CO2 + 12 H2O (+ sunlight+ chlorophyll) → 1 glucose + 6 O2 + 6 H20
Plants respire 24/7. Plants photosynthesize with brighter light
In low light, respiration and photosynthesis are in balance
In bright light, photosynthesis is much greater than respiration

CO2 is plant food.
NO is plant fertilizer.
That aside, it is obvious that as the world population increases, human CO2 just from resipiation is aiding the production of food needed by the growing population.
It seems the more we learn, the more we find Nature has an abundance of tricks that maintain a stable planet.
So, CO2 follows temp.
Little ice age … followed by lower CO2 … followed by poor tater crops.
🙂
(If we can get the CO2 levels up a little more, maybe the Irish can all go back home:))
