From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT
By Paul Homewood
I have been tracking Covering Climate Now for some time now.
They were set up to influence journalism worldwide, in order to push the alarmist agenda by, basically, telling lies:
Covering Climate Now supports, convenes, and trains journalists and newsrooms to produce rigorous climate coverage that engages audiences.
Co-founded in 2019 by Columbia Journalism Review and The Nation magazine in association with the Guardian and WNYC, CCNow invites journalists everywhere to transform how our profession covers the defining story of our time. Unless news outlets around the world dramatically improve and expand their climate coverage, there simply will not be the public awareness and political will needed to tackle the crisis.
With hundreds of partner news outlets from over 60 countries reaching billions of people, CCNow helps journalists produce more informative and appealing coverage of the climate crisis and its potential solutions.
As the climate crisis accelerates and the journalism landscape rapidly evolves, we invite all journalists and newsrooms worldwide — newsletters as well as newspapers, social media as well as television, independent investigative sites as well as a reader-funded non-profits — to join the Covering Climate Now community and help your fellow journalists produce exceptional work that engages audiences, holds power to account, and inspires change.
To learn more about the establishment of CCNow, see these pieces by our co-founders, Mark Hertsgaard and Kyle Pope: “A New Beginning for Climate” and “The Media Are Complacent While the World Burns.” For media inquiries and to see news coverage about CCNow, visit our media page. This is their latest missive:
The Violence of Climate Change
Climate change often manifests as violence, and violence often amplifies climate change. Recent weeks have illustrated both sides of this grim coin. Amped by super-hot sea water, Hurricanes Helene and Milton inflicted death and destruction across the southeastern US. On the other side of the world, the massive amounts of oil burned by tanks, planes, and other equipment in wars in Ukraine, the Middle East, and central Africa released yet more heat-trapping pollution.
Helping audiences understand the connections between climate change and war poses challenges for journalists. When hurricanes or missiles are killing people or demolishing houses today, describing those horrors understandably seems more urgent than explaining their underlying causes and ramifications.
On October 7, Ukraine bombed a major Russian oil terminal in Crimea, unleashing towering black plumes of carbon-dense smoke. Israel expanded its war from Gaza into Lebanon and reportedly pondered a strike on Iran’s vast oil fields. Sudan’s military bombed a market in Khartoum, adding 23 fatalities to a war that has killed tens of thousands. Rebel attacks continued in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where years of conflict have displaced a staggering 8 or more million people.
In May, a Covering Climate Now press briefing explained that modern war carries an immense, though often hidden, carbon footprint. Neta C. Crawford, a professor of international relations at the University of Oxford, highlighted the role of direct emissions, such as the carbon dioxide released by the Russian oil terminal bombing. Indirect emissions, such as the loss of carbon sinks when forests or wetlands are destroyed, also matter. “War causes climate change more than the other way around,” Crawford said.
Destruction of urban areas causes both direct and indirect emissions. Rawan Damen, the director general of Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism, urged news organizations to make clear how the war in Gaza not only kills men, women, and children but also “uproot[s] the trees, the greenhouses, the farms… the whole ecosystem of the place is being lost in front of our eyes.” The reconstruction of areas destroyed by war is another source of emissions, which panelist Ellie Kinney of the Conflict and Environment Observatory added, makes green recovery plans critical.
Nevertheless, war’s role as a driver of climate change is obscured by a gaping loophole in international governance. As Chelsea Harvey reported in Politico’s E&E News following the CCNow press briefing, “Nations participating in the Paris climate agreement are not required by the United Nations to report the carbon emissions from their armies and aircraft or warships and weapons.” The US military, with hundreds of overseas bases and a budget larger than the military budgets of the next nine countries combined, is the world’s single largest annual carbon emitter, Crawford calculates.
Journalism alone cannot stop either war or climate change. But our reporting can make clear how these two instruments of violence reinforce one another and, perhaps, how they might be defused.

In short, they could not give a toss about all of the deaths and suffering in these wars. Their only real concern is carbon emissions!
What scum!

“”basically, telling lies”” [Their truths]
Let’s be honest, that’s all they’ve got to go on. That and a firm grip over who gets to be heard and what gets published. This organisation has a relatively low profile, but the methods employed are no different to those utilised during the pandemic: censor [and cancel] any voices in disagreement with the preferred narrative.
“”They started off writing a balanced article. Then they decided to write an article saying: ‘We can rule out that it came out of a lab, right?’ What was really shocking was that they were sending messages to each other while writing the article and trying to get it published in Nature Medicine, saying they thought it was ‘friggin’ likely’ the virus came out of a lab. Those are the words of Kristian Andersen, the lead author.””

We’ve seen the same tactics with the dreadful Fraulein – Friederike Otto – and others when papers are published that do not chime, like that of Alimonti et al. You even get the nonsense usually trotted out for lay critics:
The study is written “by people not working in climatology and obviously unfamiliar with the topic and relevant data,” said Stefan Rahmstorf
You have to laugh. Luigi Mariani is an agricultural meteorologist.
As long as they have control of the regular media, airwaves etc they’ll be gunning for the online stuff – look out Elon Musk.
“”Elon Musk is ‘The Promoter of Evil’, Says European Commission””

The Friday funny:
“”war’s role as a driver of climate change””
Tell that one to Field Marshal Paulus.
“Let’s be honest, that’s all they’ve got to go on.” +1
There seems to be an urge to create a global reporting position for climate change with a title like “Position for Promotion and Promulgation of Permanent Propaganda.”
(That is a lot of pee).
The serious, experienced journalists with whom I have spoken regard CCN as operating completely contrary to principles of proper journalism. They say that they key to success has long come from individuals sniffing out the unusual, not from a large number of reporters buying pre-printed copy from a place like CCN.

“a global […] position”
Like a global temperature?
The PPPPP!
The most concerning Ps about climate facts are –
PROBITY of data
PROVENANCE of data
PRESENTATION / PROSECUTION of considerations & conclusions
We are being shockingly lied to on all these aspects.
instead we get Persecution by those who’ve Prostituted themselves to Patently absurd Propositions 🙂
And don’t forget p-hacking for wee pee’s to demonstrate statistical significance.
And all this just as the world is at last realising that Climate Science is seriously faulted. Not one serious climate forecast has ever come to pass. Now they try to pretend that their forecasts are only going to come to pass after we are all dead and gone. That is not science.
Right you are. I’ll make a prediction which will not be proven wrong (in my lifetime): Our descendants coming of age in 2100 will be totally unaware that there was ever a concern about fossil fuels and global climate unless they take a history class that includes examples of hubris and mass delusions. The only evidence of this episode of human stupidity will be the massive concrete foundations littering the country side.
The cracked and weakened concrete foundations. I spoke with someone knowledgeable on the subject and he assured me that the concrete foundations gets huge stresses that render them useless for reuse.
“sci·ence /ˈsīəns/
noun
the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained.
“the world of science and technology”
I agree with the sentiment, if I won’t be alive for the result then why should I care, but lets not go redefining words. Science in the general sense does not have a time limit.
“”rigorous climate coverage that engages audiences.””
Like things that go ‘bump’ in the night? In March 2023 we had our collective, er, Final Warning:
“Scientists have delivered a “final warning” on the climate crisis, as rising greenhouse gas emissions push the world to the brink of irrevocable damage that only swift and drastic action can avert.”
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/mar/20/ipcc-climate-crisis-report-delivers-final-warning-on-15c?C
They’ll be doing exactly the same this year; and next… Einstein’s original headbangers.
The activists, formerly known as teachers, in the classroom are only too eager to pitch in. How do you ramp up climate anxiety in unsuspecting children?
“”A school has been forced to cancel its plans for a no-heating day after concerns from parents.
Wolsingham School, in Durham, emailed parents this week to inform them of its plans for a ‘blue nose day’. It said this would ‘conserve energy’ and help reduce the secondary school’s ‘carbon footprint’. And that, while hoodies weren’t allowed, pupils should wear vests and extra-thick socks.””

I bet somewhere there are links between education and Covering Climate Now….
It’s worse than I thought….
The government
How can you involve your pupils in climate action?
Education is a vital tool in raising awareness and equipping future generations with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle climate change.
We know schools, teachers and pupils are already doing great things to respond to the climate change challenge and play their part in creating a sustainable future. Throughout COP26 and beyond, we’ll be sharing examples of green success stories from teachers and pupils for inspiration and ideas.

The teaching union
Climate change and its effects are of great concern to young people today. Teachers have a role in raising awareness of the climate crisis
…
“”Tackling the climate crisis through education empowers young people to seek the vital changes needed.
…
Resources provide wider information and guidance towards whole school sustainability and carbon reduction as well as information on training sessions for educators.
Teach the Future is an inclusive, well organised and persistent campaign by secondary and tertiary education students to greatly improve education on the climate emergency and ecological crisis in the UK.

Indoctrination not education. The future looks grim unless the “students” are smart enough to smell the bullshit.
“We know schools, teachers and pupils are already doing great things to respond to the climate change challenge and play their part in creating a sustainable future. Throughout COP26 and beyond, we’ll be sharing examples of green success stories from teachers and pupils for inspiration and ideas.”
My generation walked to school and covered 10 yo textbooks with paper bags from the supermarket to get another 10 years out of them.
paper bags from supermarket?
Looooxury!!
We had to cover our books with railway toilet paper.
And we weren’t allowed to fold sheets double layer.
We had to use our snot for glue.
Aye, we owned nowt, but we were ‘appy.
Just like Big Bruvver said.
“examples of green success stories”
NONE.. CO2 continues to rise at a slightly accelerating rate as the planet warms.
NOTHING they have done or will do will have any effect on that, whatsoever.
Even the complete destruction of the UK economy, which is apparently the aim, will have absolutely ZERO effect on the weather or future weather.
Thank God it’s only in England.
If that shit went forward and I was a parent with a kid in that school, I’d be keeping said child home that day and would be very vocal about why I don’t support such gross stupidity from an institution that is SUPPOSED TO BE about EDUCATION, not indoctrination or political agendas.
Re: “Wolsingham School…”
I wonder how many teachers walked or biked to school.
(I’m from USA so don’t know if the teachers in Wolsingham always walk or bike anyway. Here, teachers often drive subcompact import cars held together by inflamatory bumper stickers.)

In short, they could not give a toss about all of the deaths and suffering in these wars. Their only real concern is carbon emissions!
Not quite a complete assessment.
There only real concern is about control. Control the language, control the ideas.
What the swung and missed on is they did not point out that decomposing people also emit CO2 and methane.
Do not misunderstand. Wars are very bad. Suffering is very bad. Destruction is very bad. CO2 is harmless.
Funny, too, is the CO2 graphs do not show the effects of WWII on CO2 in the atmosphere.
They would have to depart from the narrative of “balanced” CO2 levels before “meaningful” human emissions that supposedly started AFTER WWII to show those effects.
Not to mention they would have to Mannsplain how rising CO2 emissions couldn’t prevent three decades of COOLING climate (The Ice Age Cometh global cooling scare) that followed in the wake of WWII.
WWII – it amazes me how big people considered the world during that era. It’s almost as if they regularly ventured outside.
“How many above ground nuclear tests?
According to the Arms Control Association, at least eight countries have carried out a total of 2,056 nuclear tests since 1945. Of those, 507 have been atmospheric explosions, which spread radioactive materials through the atmosphere.”
Why? Because outside is really, really big, even bigger than the biggest explosion.
And operation fishbowl where the us government was trying to nuke the earth’s atmosphere.
MIT Trchnology Review
A handful of studies have concluded that making minor adjustments to the routes of a small fraction of airplane flights could meaningfully reduce global warming. Now a new paper finds that these changes could be pretty cheap to pull off as well.
Key phrase: “pretty cheap”
Contrails don’t make enough cloud cover or aerosols to reduce GW very much. The Co2 emissions of the entire airline industry are only 2.5% of human emissions. Often made claims of 5% additional GW caused by the airplane emissions are simply not justifiable. The cheapest solution is to do nothing pending the development of economic biofuels to replace JP…although cancelling frequent flier programs would probably cut flights and hence emissions by 25%…but the entire air, hotel, and vacation industries are not for this idea, and neither are governments who have to pay unemployment and welfare to laid off hospitality industry workers.
Clealry, the folks at MIT have never heard of Great Circle Routes.
Having read their missive, I can joyfully give up the senna pods. And when necessary, just read their missive.
A sad and tragic state of affairs for the future of humanity. You cannot trust anything anybody says any more.
One of many lies, there is no crisis.
Engaging audiences is telling stories.
If the news story is told well, it entertains and informs.
If the story is based on fact, it is news.
If the story is based on falsehood or feelings, it is fiction.
Writing fiction is not journalism.
Publishing fiction, in any medium, does not make it news.
Some of the best journalists have been good at telling stories.
The best story tellers need not bother with facts.
In a free society it is really up to the consumer, reader, or viewer to know the difference between news, facts, and a good story. .
The problem is that there are too many supposed “news” outlets breathlessly reporting hyperbolic nonsense as if it were fact.
A fine example being every time the phrase “climate crisis” is tossed into so-called “news” as if it were a fact.
I’ve covered the CCN outfit as well, its founder is a guy who has been putting out disinformation dating back to 1997 when it comes to the smear of skeptic climate scientists:
My WUWT guest post – “Mark Hertsgaard is Back. Again. ‘Covering Climate Now.’ ”
My GelbspanFiles blog update of the guy’s disinformation efforts – “Covering Climate Now, 3/2/23: ‘Fox News Lies About Elections & Repositions Global Warming as Theory (Not Fact).’“
The USA universities that produce culture for the west became sheltered from practical thoughts about war generations ago. The all-volunteer USA military draws from a sufficiently different candidate pool that it operates like a separate culture entirely. Kids envisioning a beautiful college campus might not see war concepts the same way as kids who wondered whether they would be deployed with a rifle.
The thesis of that overgeneralization: Of course today’s journalists don’t know how to cover a war, especially if none of the protagonists are explaining their motives. War’s not what they grew up thinking about, unless you count “The Cold War”, and the cold war is aging out. Ronald Reagan was president 50 years ago. Google says the median age of US WW2 veterans is 98 years old.
1981 to 1989, surely? Not 50 years ago.
“As the climate crisis accelerates”
My personal climate crisis – my shower abuts an outside wall. I was chilly this morning until steam from hot water warmed up my little bathroom.
It’s the Myopticon. The all-seeing eye that only sees climate change no matter where it looks.
We’ve seen it before but it applies so well to CoveringClimateNow “journalists”.
CCnews should concentrate on crappy government rather than CO2 emissions. Governments should concentrate on removing barriers to prosperity. Support private property rights, encourage plentiful energy via fossil fuel and nuclear generation, encourage private farming and manufacturing, mandate low taxes and regulation. Do all these things and your people will prosper.
Interestingly around 2019/2020 a number online news outlets shut down there comments sections. There seems to be a concerted effort to shutdown dissent
Maybe nobody read the articles, they just wrote the same f#%%^# thing every day like clockwork? I’d get bored being a platform provider for so many in the commentariat. We should thank Watts every so often for putting up with us all, especially the non-subscription trolls like me.
Thanks Anthony

“This result does not take away from the fact that human emission of greenhouse gases is responsible for the long-term warming trend and that this warming will continue until the net emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases is brought to zero,” said Brian Soden, a co-author of the study and a professor of atmospheric sciences at the Rosenstiel School.

Do they mean the Crimea was seized by Russia in 2014 after the 1997 treaty was agreed between Ukraine and Russia?
They do.
