Book intended to be “supplemental” to standard curricula and counter alarmist narrative with facts on the climate that reflect current data and research
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL (February 2, 2023) – The Heartland Institute’s new book, Climate at a Glance for Teachers and Students: Facts on 30 Prominent Climate Topics, will be arriving in schools across the United States this week, giving more than 8,000 middle- and high-school science teachers the latest data and research on the climate.The 80-page book covers 30 climate topics often discussed in science classes, as well as among the general public and media, and provides the data to show the earth is not experiencing a climate crisis.
The book is designed to be easily utilized by teachers to integrate into their lesson plans with its breakdown into five sections: (1) The Atmosphere and Land, (2) The Sea and Ice, (3) Temperatures and Extreme Weather, (4) Humans and Animals, and (5) Scientific and Policy Controversies.
The data in the book – with footnotes in each chapter citing the sources – was compiled by authors Anthony Watts, senior fellow for environmental policy at The Heartland Institute who has worked as an on-air meteorologist since 1978; and James Taylor, president of The Heartland Institute who has been studying and communicating about climate and energy policy for Heartland for more than 20 years. The book was edited by H. Sterling Burnett, director of The Heartland Institute’s Arthur B. Robinson Center for Climate and Environmental Policy and managing editor of Environment & Climate News.

Among the facts in this book that counter common and false alarmist narratives about the climate:
Crop Production, p. 6: As the climate modestly warms, global crop yields have set new records almost every year. That is due, in part, to longer growing seasons and greater concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Floods, p. 10: The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports it has “low confidence” in climate change is impacting flooding. The annual cost of flood damage in the United States (per GDP) has declined significantly over the last nearly 120 years.
Snowpack, p. 12: Average North American snowpack extent is virtually the same as it was in the late 1960s, when U.S. satellite measurements began. There has been only a modest decline in Eurasian snowpack in recent years.
Coral Reefs, p. 24: Corals thrive in warm water, not cold water, and recent warming has allowed corals to expand their range. The primary causes of coral bleaching are not “global warming,” but sediment and agricultural chemical run offs.
Ocean Acidification, p. 32: Ocean water is not overly acidic with the pH of surface ocean waters falling by merely 0.1 pH units since 1850 and is still well above the neutral pH number of 7.
Sea-Level Rise, p. 36: Global sea levels have risen more than 400 feet since the beginning of the current interglacial period, as it does between ice ages. NASA satellite instruments, with readings dating back to 1993, show global sea levels rising at a pace of just 1.2 inches per decade with no sign that pace is accelerating.
Hurricanes, p. 41: The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has found no increase in the frequency or severity of hurricanes despite modest warming.
U.S. Heat Waves, p. 49: The all-time high temperature records set in most states occurred in the first half of the 20th century. The heat waves of recent decades have been far less severe and frequent than they were in the 1930s.
U.S. Wildfires, p. 54: Even in the recent worst wildfire seasons, those fires typically burned one-fifth to half as much land as the standard wildfire seasons in the early 20th century.
Climate Refugees, p. 58: Despite much fear-mongering, a majority of the islands from which climate activists predicted would produce “climate refugees” due to sea-level rise have actually seen their landmass increase in recent decades. The United Nations confirms casualties linked to climate-related natural disasters have declined this century.
Polar Bears, p. 69: Polar bear populations have increased dramatically in recent decades despite claims to the contrary made in the media and among climate activists. Polar bears have thrived in much warmer climates than we are experiencing today.

Not being familiar with the Heartland Institute, I saw the headline on my mail, and thought: “There we go, the Bolsheviks are using my taxes to buy propaganda from their useless nephews and smearing it off on our children. When will somebody spend the money to distribute an honest book by someone like that Watts guy, or Rotter, or anyone with brains…”.
I am happy to report that I am pleasantly surprised.

FYI, it is the Heartland Institute that provides the bare bones WordPress structure for my GelbspanFiles blog. The CAGW war by Al Gore & crew is waged on two fronts, “settled science” and “crooked skeptics” – Heartland (along with CFACT, WUWT, ClimateDepot) covers much on how faulty the CAGW ‘science” is, and I cover how the accusation that skeptic scientists are “liars for hire on the payroll of Big Oil” is totally without merit, promulgated by a core clique of enviro-activists who may have committed one of the biggest acts of libel/slander in history.
I have no problem if this book is intended for Climate Realists, sometimes called skeptics. I have read and recommended just about every article by H. Sterling Burnett and Anthony Watts in the past.
But if the intention of this book is to change minds among almost entirely leftist teachers, it will be a failure. The authors may understand the science of climate but give little evidence of understanding the politics of climate. Their attempt to change beliefs using facts, data and logic can not change climate beliefs NOT based on facts, data and logic. That strategy will fail, just as it has failed since the 1970s.
The belief in a coming climate crisis is not based on observations. It is barely based on actual experience with global warming from 1975 to 2015. The belief, aka CAGW, is just a prediction of global warming 2x to 4x faster than in the cherry picked 1975 to 2015 period. A prediction that has been wrong for 43 years since the 1979 Charney Report
And never mind that there was no global warming from 2015 to 2013 — that inconvenient trend will be “adjusted” away later because a flat temperature trend does not support the CO2 is evil narrative. Just like the 1940 to 1975 global cooling trend with CO2 rising was “adjusted” away. Also inconvenient for the popular CO2 is evil narrative.
WHERE THIS BOOK WENT SERIOUSLY WRONG
(I’m assuming the goal is to change leftist Climate Howler minds — the book is very good for Climate Realists — I’m pretty sure I read a prior edition last Spring, after glancing at this new version today)
This book appears to be sent to people who did not ask for it. The teachers are mainly leftists, so they are a hostile audience. They have been brainwashed, and have brainwashed their students, about the imaginary coming climate crisis since the 1980s. They are government employees whose climate beliefs are strongly affected by the appeal to government authority logical fallacy, and confirmation bias.
Teachers will rarely listen to outsiders like Watts, Burnett and Taylor. Most teachers will toss the book on a shelf, or throw it away, in my opinion. It would be nice if they would read their copy, or at least offer their copy to any student who was interested, but they probably will not. Because this book does not match the official climate change scaremongering curriculum.
The authors are too sensible to think like leftists. But I’m trying to do that this year to better understand how to reach leftists … if there is ever an opportunity in the future when leftist want to hear an alternative Climate Realist view. Maybe after a few cold years, or after a Nut Zero blackout or two?
The book should start with a detailed attempt to convince people it is worth reading, rather than jumping into a specific topic. To make people think the book is worth reading. the appeal to authority logical fallacy must be attacked and weakened. And that should be easy. We have had wrong climate and other environmental predictions of doom for at least a century. The more failed predictions are listed in a book, with the name and position of the predictor, the better the chance of convincing readers the authorities can’t predict the climate. How about listing 50 wrong predictions? Or even 100? At the beginning of the book. And then explain that CAGW is nothing more than a prediction, that has been wrong for 43 years in a row because people can not predict the climate, even big shot scientists — CAGW is not reality.
The most important failed climate prediction is the wrong prediction of CAGW in the 1979 Charney Report.
The most important climate change subject is that every teacher and child has lived with climate change for his or her entire life. Most people didn’t even notice the climate changing, because no one was harmed.
The second and third most important climate change subjects are covered in the book: Facts and figures showing the benefits of CO2 for plants, and the milder weather in the Northern Hemisphere as the temperature differential between the Arctic and the topics declined from 1975 to 2015.
I’m interested in any other comments on how to reach leftist emotions on climate change. Facts and figures are not enough. We need a better strategy. I like the Saul Alinsky strategy of ridiculing the government authorities who make wrong climate predictions to scare people.

My point was the facts. data and logic message that appeals to Climate Realists will not change minds of Climate Howlers, and has not changed those minds since the 1970s.
We need a new strategy instead of hoping for different results using the same strategy. And I will keep saying this because reciting climate facts, data and logic has not worked since the 1970s. The leftist appeal to authority logical fallacy is too strong for that to work.
I’m sure there are some students in schools who would be interested in this book. I doubt if many teachers are.
I can take constructive criticism every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
But, this book has been out for months, highlighted/posted as stories at least twice, and on the sidebar for months. The title has always been about teachers and students.
Yet, on the day that we send out 8000 copies after months of the book being around, you decide it is time for your “constructive criticism” when it is too late to do anything about it at all. Sheesh, “missed the boat” doesn’t even cover it.
That’s called “Monday Morning Quarterbacking” and I don’t see it as complimentary or helpful at all.
With respect, Mr. Watts, I know of a few guys squatting around this site, repeatedly calling for the Realists to get wise to the sloganeering methodology, as well as the ridiculing-the-idjit angle 😉
But I think the book still valuable as a sort of crib sheet for when we deal with idjits. A beer-fuelled discussion can easily degrade into an argument, and for the non-specialist, it is difficult to remember the salient facts in the heat of battle. A range of ready-made counter-attacks by professionals is a filled quiver. I shall load up…

I talked to a retired leftist Detroit teacher friend on climate science on other leftist brainwashing in school. He said no materials that did not support the official curriculum would ever be distributed to students or read by teachers.
Of course some teachers (a few) and some student might be interested in the unofficial climate science book. Why not seek them out first, rather than sending books to random, likely to be hostile to new information, teachers?

This year I am finding that Climate Realists can be stubborn and hostile to fellow Climate Realists who do not support them 100%.

You can’t change minds that are closed to change, regardless of your tactics.
This book will certainly fall on deaf ears (to mix metaphors), but there is a possibility that some few of those receiving it will read it, or at least glance it over. Even then, it won’t change their minds, but it might open their minds just a little.
Your comments have suggested that “just a little” isn’t good enough – but the tactic of attacking people who express doubts about their indoctrination simply because they haven’t had a Damascus moment and fully embraced skepticism is far more likely to fail than Anthony’s approach.

In my experience, no amount of empirical data or scientific evidence can sway true believers from their delusions. I applaud your efforts but think most copies will be tossed in the trash without consideration. The brainwashed have no interest in being educated. If 1% are read and accepted as factual it would be a win in my book.

But the mistake they will make in their book-burning efforts will be to showcase to any fence-sitters out there how tyrannical this mob can be, while also reinforcing the way the Streisand Effect always works against the book-burners. Yep, it may end up being a literal waste of paper, but imagine the potentially rising numbers of people who fish those books out of the trash who’ll say, “golly, this proves what I always suspected about the global warming hoax.”

Maybe, but I think most won’t toss it on a shelf or throw away at least not in the short term. I suspect most will at least glance at it- and I think some will be influenced by it. I suspect many teachers and burreacrats (who I simply call burros) are already climate skeptics but are afraid of saying so since they prefer to stay on the gravy train. So, to give them something to chew on may be helpful. I’m no more a fan of lefty, overpaid teachers and burros than you are- but I think the battle against climate lunacy will be complex, many faceted, and take many years. This item will be very helpful- especially if those who hang out here pass it along to everyone they know. It could help trigger a mass movement against the climate lunatics like Ale “the oceans are boiling” Gore.
While it is unclear how much effect it will have, it is probably worth a shot. After all, there certainly are some teachers who don’t believe the catastrophic climate change narrative and this could be quite useful to them. (My oldest sister’s high school teacher who tended to skip through the climate change related sections of her assigned curriculum to focus on other topics was likely one of these herself.)

They immediately reject unofficial sources.
They will believe any fake claim that attacks CO2 if you state it seriously following “Scientists say”. I have done this for 20 years. I make up factoids and leftists friends believe them. My last factoid was: “Scientists say life on Earth will never be the same in 49.25 years unless we reduce CO2 emissions rapidly.”
Conservative friends who know nothing about climate science would be interested in the book. Not leftist friends. Maybe one leftist friend would be interested, but I doubt it. They are brainwashed on climate change. Their grown children are much worse.

That would provide needed context and tend to fire more interest in continuing to read. I’d have lobbied for a “myth” vs “reality” heading for each chapter, too, or “what you may have heard” vs “what scientists know,” or something similar.
The climate myths from government leaders can usually be refuted by official government data, and the book covers that.
But the biggest myth is that humans can predict the future climate. We have a century of 100% wrong predictions of environmental doom as our ammunition. The failed predictions are our best weapons.
I disagree. As you point out, climate propaganda is a religion. Those who believe it will often prefer to ignore any and all contrary evidence. But for those who are prepared to open their minds just a little the book is a valuable resource. It points them in the right direction to explore more of the real evidence for themselves, and to question the received teaching they encounter.
It will gain an audience by being a text of the counter revolution. Perhaps read illicitly by the very children who are being indoctrinated. Even among some of the teaching staff who understand that they are being required to teach propaganda. And the politicians who are being asked to spout nonsense.
In the UK at present it is wonderful to observe the contortions of politicians in Scotland trying to pretend that male rapists who declare themselves to be transgender should be housed in women’s prisons. Eventually, reality catches up. So it will with climate.

I remember getting a free John Bircher comic book in my 4th grade class. That ages both me and this tactic…..
A logical marketing approach would be to get mailing lists and send e-mails to teachers (or students) asking them if they are interested in a free book on climate change. Explain why the book is different than the official textbooks. Teachers (or students) who respond have indicated an interest. The e-mails are cheap — the books are relatively expensive. Send books only to people who respond to an e-mail, expressing an interest in learning real climate science. Start with one school to see if this plan works. If it works, maybe launch a Go Fund Me account to make more books available to more schools.

Kids get poked from all sides. From the Bircher comic book I got, to a museum showing cave men riding dinosaurs. They will have to sort it all out when their skulls full of mush congeal.
But since I’m here, the header channels all of those records and CD’s that used to be “Shipped Platinum”. My school teacher daughter just bought a turntable and loves to go to the vintage vinyl store. Lots available, many with the original plastic wrap….

when you first presented that booklet, I criticized the Ocean Acidity chapter, because IMHO the discussion should not be about the naming of a “trend going towards acidity in alkaline oceans” being called accidification, but the fact that the anthropogenic part is rather small, influenced by other factors and at the surface only.
I like the current version better a lot!
However, I still see this as an example where well meaning skeptics are sidestepped and fiercely discussing some naming, while they should focus on the science!
“Climate change” would be another one .. That is not what the debate should be about, but the anthropogenic contribution to global warming and all kind of mistakes and falsehoods spinning around that topic.
Once this is solved (and when CMIP6 models find an about 25% different effect than CMIP5 models I do not think they science has gotten very far yet), then maybe we can focus on climate change, but of course need to consider McKitirck´s finding that attribution from climate models has been and still is done wrong, so that discussion basically lacks any scientific base…

I try and spread the realist word but arguing against the “evil” of carbon dioxide is more akin to a religious argument than a scientific one as the climate fear has been so ingrained in schools for a generation or more. I bought some UK school exam revision books the other day and see the worst of the UN IPCC predictions made out to be likely – e.g. 2.5 metre sea level rise by the end of the century.
Can someone point me to the data or articles showing no warming since 2015 as I mentioned this in a UK newspaper and it was removed as fake.

Give the reader an explanation, rather than leaving them to continue to believe, mistakenly, that it is due to carbon dioxide.
Very nice. Love it. It’s about time. The word “Facts” in the title is unfortunate for us who have grown tired of spewed disinformation misrepresented as facts. ” Latest information” “or up o date information” would have been better.
This is good news, we are heading in the right direction. The schools are a good place to start, it is true many educators are indoctrinated climate agitators but certainly not all. I am confident that even the most radical climate agitator would struggle mightily to disprove the information in this book. That is the point, to shine the light of truth into the darkest recesses and make the bad guys squirm. To challenge the status quo within the system is difficult and takes a brave soul. With this resource in the school all good people have to do is ask questions. It will work.

How could parents be encouraged to participate in parent teacher meetings, armed with this book to strongly request an end to indoctrination. Using hard evidence from their kid’s current textual material they could expose the need for editing. Video taping such an event and putting it out into circulation somehow would inspire more and more parents to take similar action.
You are right Sommer, many years ago my brother in law was the Republican candidate for County Attorney. I was on his campaign team. Our city and county are liberal cesspools. My thinking was we had nothing to lose by going all out. I begged the campaign committee to go to the Union hall to campaign, everybody figured I was a crackpot. i read the report of sending to schools across the country and think it is a great idea, but also that you have given us this discussion. I have downloaded the digital book and will send it to multiple School Board members I know in multiple states, telling them also of your efforts to provide FREE books to their schools/faculty. They are always dealing the cost of “Everything”. Maybe other readers can consider if sending the book to school board members they know can help Spread The Word.

Your point is taken, of course, but the old adage applies: they go low, we go high. Calling Lindsay, Liz, and Mitt charlatans vents steam, but nobody is then informed exactly what they are ‘charlatanning’ about. We should expose those three in succinct terms and set an example of how that’s done, because if there is one thing which really irritates our opponents, it’s when we don’t sink down to their level of fighting in the pigsty, but instead is when we shine a spotlight on them and ask them to defend indefensible positions.

To me the litmus test for global warming is serious and increasing sea level rise (or the lack thereof) that the alarmists promote and you have a good chapter on that issue.
I note that you use the great Battery tide gauge with its 2.88mm/year rise. I wonder if future editons might also point out that the Battery is actually sinking at 2.15mm/year so the true sea level rise is only 0.7mm/year. Not many teachers realise that we can now make these GPS corrections and that should make the world much less scary for them and their students! It also shows how a little bit of investigation can disprove much of what they are few by the media.
“Don’t throw pearls before swine” is a sound tactic. It assumes there are people who aren’t swine who would benefit more.
But in this case we are not sure that the teachers are swine. Some may think every school is a pigsty but there’s no reason for that prejudice.
Also, we have runout of people who care enough about the environment to actually research it. After 30 years evryone has either; agreed we are doomed, realised we are not or decided they have more pressing issues to worry about and just go with the flow.
It is the last gropup who may be interested.
Put your case reasonably and it may be listened to.
Treat people as beneath contempt, unreasonable and a waste of your precious truths and… don’t be surprised when they disgaree with you.

Honest Climate Science and Energy
The readers of my blog are far fewer than readers of this website, — maybe 300 to 400 readers a day — and they are all conservatives, in my opinion. Leftists last less than 10 minutes, from those I have had feedback from.
It seems to me that about half the nation is conservative, or at least not leftists.
Very few of those conservatives know anything about climate science.
That includes conservatives with great influence, such as Donald Trump
Conservatives may not trust leftists on the CO2 is evil propaganda, but they are not armed with even the most basic climate knowledge.
Here in Michigan we conservatives come in contact with a lot of leftists, unfortunately.
Can you imagine a day when half the people in a nation are able to speak intelligently about climate science for even one minute? They would influence the other half of the nation?
Hear in Michigan we love global warming. This is a relatively cold state. Does anyone here think of that if the subject of climate change comes up? Rarely. They think of the global average temperature, not their local climate.
How about personal experience with global warming from 1975 to 2015?
Do people think about how harmless that global warming was to the world in those years? Rarely. Assuming they even realized there had been warming for 40 years.
Do people realize wrong predictions of a coming climate crisis started with the 1979 Charney Report? No.
Do people realize every climate prediction in history has been wrong? Sometimes conservative friends do, but not the leftists.

The first target of basic climate science and energy knowledge should be roughly half the nation’s people. those who are conservative but know little or nothing about honest climate science.
They would be willing to learn from this book.
Leftists, however, almost always have closed minds.
It would also be a great idea to send this excellent ‘Climate at a Glance’ book, to all Leaders of nations & their Energy ministers, such as in the UK: Rishi Sunak, Greg Hands & COP26 minister Alok Sharma?
