Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Michael Mann seems to think only a strong green President with the will to override Congress with “bold” executive orders can save the world from catastrophe.

Yes—Donald Trump Is a Threat to the Planet

In just a matter of weeks, we will be confronted with a critical decision. It is not mere hyperbole to assert that we are facing a make-or-break election as far as climate change is concerned.

My co-author Tom Toles (the Pulitzer-winning editorial cartoonist for the Washington Post) and I put it this way in the concluding chapter of our new book, The Madhouse Effect: How Climate Change Denial Is Threatening Our Planet, Destroying Our Politics and Driving Us Crazy.

In the current presidential contest, we could not have a more stark choice before us, between a candidate who rejects the overwhelming evidence that climate change is happening and a candidate who embraces the role of a price on carbon and incentives for renewable energy.

If you care about the planet, the choice would seem clear.

In this next election, we need to decide whether we are going to build on the successes of the Obama administration — which has used a combination of bold executive actions and international diplomacy to achieve action on climate change even in the presence of intransigence, denial and outright hostility from congressional republicans—or whether we are going to retreat back into the energy-equivalent of the stone age, continuing to degrade our planet through the profligate burning of increasingly dangerous fossil carbon even as the rest of the world moves forward, embracing the renewable energy revolution destined to be the hallmark of the 21st century.

Leaving aside Mann’s overhyping of the importance of the US contribution to global greenhouse emissions, I find Mann’s apparent insistence that a strong president can pretty much ignore the will of Congress rather disturbing.

Is this really the true state of affairs in modern America?

Putting a green zealot in charge, with a mission to save the world, and the authority and will to “boldly” override the wishes of other branches of government – what could possibly go wrong?

Trump is not the risk.
The risk is the continuation of the evil experiment in authoritarian government.
For some amusement, readers might Google “Denier Pride”.

Down Under we keep reading about this Trump guy and the dire threat he poses to Western Civilisation and decent folks everywhere. Any news as to whether they’ve managed to track him down like Bin Laden yet?

I assume your comment is facetious. If you’ve only heard about Trump from the media, then you don’t have a good picture. Hillary Clinton is the most wanted unindicted conspirator in the U.S. She has a rap sheet of scandals going back at least 23 years and it always involves her gaining money or power. Hillary is scarier than Trump ever could be. His heart is in the right place – I really believe he is just tired of seeing all the BS in DC.

Having your heart in the right place is not enough. You also have to have your head in the right place as well.
Some of the worst disasters this world has seen have been caused by people who cared, but didn’t think.

“Hillary is scarier than Trump ever could be. His heart is in the right place – I really believe he is just tired of seeing all the BS in DC.”
I agree. Trump’s heart is in the right place. He makes mistakes in his presentation, but he is not a bigot, or a racist and he doesn’t look down on women, as he is being portrayed.

i see no evidence that hillary has a “heart” when it comes to caring one iota about any other citizen…….her handling of top secret information shows she cares ZERO about our nation or its security.

Trump’s first “hire” of Mike Pence as Vice President candidate was superb. I believe he will act as a real chief executive and hire people who know what they’re doing. And he actually knows how to do something besides screwing up emails, Embassy protection, etc. like Hillary. If Michael Mann doesn’t want Trump, that says a lot. I’m with Trump.

I guess it’s safe to say that Mann threatens modern civilization. Won’t he be surprised when he’s not allowed to live the elite life, but instead has to crouch in dimly lit, poorly heated or cooled hovels and document his ‘carbon footprint’ daily.

Well, that settles it. If Mann is against Trump, the sane course of action is to vote for Trump and Pence.

I wonder how much Mann has inve$ted in the Hillary campaign?
Mann’s co-author is a cartoonist. Does that mean the book will be a coloring book?

So Mann is a simple-minded, single-issue voter…on a global issue that our upcoming Prez would have minimal control over (even if we could slow warming/climate change substantially in the first place).

“So Mann is a simple-minded, single-issue voter”
Many on the left are simple-minded, single-issue voters, where the common thread seems to be emotional issues which are otherwise opposed by logic.

I completely disagree with Mann’s assumptions on global warming. But if, for arguments sake, there were any credence to anthropogenic warming, let’s still remember that Mann’s (and others’) call for massive decarbonization represents a concrete, quantifiable threat to civilization. Most notably, such an approach represents a death sentence for many in the developing world. So, when Mann frets about catastrophe, a bit of context is necessary…

Why is the Arch of Titus the headline image? Not that it matters much here, but the solid gold menorah shown here, was bought for the Temple by Queen Helena of Edessa. Just some useless information for you.

The fundamental problem is that, despite the Constitution, we have created in the Presidency a position with so much power over so many details that no human is qualified to hold the office. I hope, probably in vain, that we can some day get back to defining, distributing, and limiting the power of Government.
As one who has sworn to uphold the Constitution on ten occasions I sometimes despair.

“I put it this way in the concluding chapter of our new book, The Madhouse Effect: How Climate Change Denial Is Threatening Our Planet, Destroying Our Politics and Driving Us Crazy.”
It would be more accuratte to say: “Climate Change Denial is threatening our Leftist/Green fantasy world, and our hopes of world domination; is Destroying our Leftwing politics, and is Driving Us Leftists Crazy. We can’t handle the Truth!”

“It is not mere hyperbole to assert that we are facing a make-or-break election as far as climate change is concerned.”
Indeed. Hyperbole requires at least some faint connection to reality. However, to be fair, there is a slight (but not zero) possibility that Trump, as president, will take a long-overdue chainsaw to the climate regulatory vampire.

Not snark. I’m genuinely curious where you’re coming from with this.

During his nomination victory speech, Obama said, in part” . . .this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal . . “ Since that speech and nearing the end of his final term, the C02 levels have risen from 384 PPM to 402 PPM, yet the global temperatures have not increased, the sea levels have remained as always and I’m not sure there was a healing of anything – foreign, domestic or otherwise.
What Mann really means to say is Trump may (and hopefully) exclude him and his ilk from the typical billions in Government grants.

I’m not surprised Mann would say something like this. If Trump does happen to turn his attention to any of the Climate-shinanigans, Mann is the poster-boy for fraud. He’s even got a catch-phrase all ready: ‘State Pen, not Penn State for Michael Mann.’

The country to which Trump poses the biggest threat is the US. Sadly due to the position of the US as a world leader in economies, policies and militaries, we’ll all feel the effects eventually.

Here he is hyping the storm already, as usual sprinkling conspiracy pixie dust as he goes …

Newscast by fabian subversive perpetual motion courtesy normally associated crackpot. So, so rosy it’s pathetic. Upside down and inside out doesn’t cut it anymore George, passenger side mirrors carry labels these days. By order, something to do with compound reflexivity apparently.
Pseudo-academic self-flagellation does not absolution engender. For goodness sake just learn to STFU and retire in peace and tranquillity. Suck a Fisherman’s Friend every morning before breakfast in a quiet corner someplace. Original flavour only though – no more of those honey and lemon things.
Here’s another desciple who doubtless listened to too many buzzword filled Hungarian lectures, fails to understand the ultimate human dilemma yet claims to believe in evolution. The punch line is a cracker, compound ‘reflexivity’ on steroids for free. What manner of “deep story” ego derivation is on display here I wonder. Obviously drives an old car with unlabelled mirrors.

The CCD will live on, as long as there are public grants or subsidies etc. etc. Trump *might* be able to shut that “industry” down in the US, but he can’t push it through abroad.

Mann, the hockey stick fraudster, apparently thinks the President of the U.S. has the ability to control the planet’s bahavior. Mann is confusing himself with the planet : Trump may very well be a threat to Mann’s
financial health, but that is not equivalent to the health of the planet Earth.
