President Obama has announced a new initiative to tackle climate change, in the name of helping people with asthma.

According to AP;

Warning of the perils to the planet has gotten the president only so far; polls consistently show the public is skeptical that the steps Obama has taken to curb pollution are worth the cost to the economy. So Obama is aiming to put a spotlight on ways that climate change will have real impacts on the body, like more asthma attacks, allergic reactions, heat-related deaths and injuries from extreme weather.

Obama said spending on health — such as preventing asthma — can save more money than it costs, as well as alleviate pain and suffering.

As an asthma sufferer, I’m personally disgusted that the President is seeking to exploit sympathy for my condition, to further his political climate agenda. Car exhaust and pollution can trigger an asthma attack – but by far the worst trigger for asthma attacks which I encountered was extreme cold. Heat waves cause deaths – but cold is far worse. Death rates soar in winter. The suggestion that milder winters in the future might be a public health threat is absurd.

Would be a good idea for Obamascience to rule out food additives and other possible allergy triggers including pollens from plants that opportunistically flourish due to increased CO2 and our agricultural practices before chucking Occam’s razor and going with global warming.

Data off the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) web site show that incidents of exceeding the federal limits for particulate matter (PM) 2.5 micrometers and less are down significantly since 2000. Yet asthma cases continue to rise. There is no causal effect in that data!

>>Walt D. says: April 8, 2015 at 3:50 am Climate Change is causing erectile dysfunction in polar bears!
>>Sometimes when I give talks about climate, I refer to AGW as “Climate Dysfunction”, figuring it would be an amusing sequel to Holdren’s “Climate Disruption”. Alas, every joke contains a grain of seriousness. In 2006 this revelation on the love lives of polar bears emerged:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17007124?dopt=Abstract
“The study suggests that there is an impact from xenoendocrine pollutants on the size of East Greenland polar bear genitalia. This may pose a risk to this polar bear subpopulation in the future because of reduced sperm and egg quality/quantity and uterus and penis size/robustness.”
Or a more readable version:
http://mindaberbeco.scienceblog.com/2012/08/28/climate-change-and-sexual-dysfunction-or-how-the-polar-bear-lost-its-wiener/
Or, if you read “Grist”:
http://grist.org/list/polar-bear-dick-size-is-apocolypses-most-recent-casualty/
Now the culprit is “xenoendocrine pollutants” instead of CO2, but hey, they’re all pollutants, EPA tells us, so “what difference does it make”?
And it’s not just polar bears:
http://www.wnd.com/2010/05/147617/ (This one also mentions asthma, to get this back OT)
Now, I’m a data guy, and one must always consider the source of data used used in a study: how it was obtained, how accurate or representative it is, how it’s adjusted, and so on. In this case, three questions come to mind in this study of polar bear “penis size/robustness”:
Who gathered the data?
How did they gather it?
Why????

I was so worried about the dangers of climate change I read in the media it gave me diarrhea. I’m hoping to write a report on this and get some money from the government.

I think the confusion Presiident Obama is trying to sow is between Carbon Particulate and Carbon Dioxide. Carbon Particulate – Soot – harms lungs and causes asthma. Carbon Dioxide is the staff of life in the atmosphere and in the oceans.. Almost everything we are made of comes from Carbon Dioxide. Carbon dioxide haters always try to confound the two by showing photos of black smoke from smokestacks, refering to Carbon pollution, etc., etc.

From a warmest point of view, facts are a pain in the…..

One of the great truths to ideology, facts are never in short supply, facts are made up as one goes along. The POTUS has an agenda (CO2 commitments at the December 2015 Paris COP) based upon an ideology (redistribution of wealth in the name of equity) through the mechanism of CO2 mitigation. The latest iteration of Presidential facts state that climate change causes more asthma.
To not appear alone, POTUS enlists the American Lung Association (ALA), a large lobbing group which in the past has championed identification/treatment for tuberculosis; worked to eliminate cigarette smoking; and more recently identification/treatment for asthma.
ALA jumped onto the story that CO2 is an air pollutant. It is here where the wheels came off the CO2 is a pollutant bandwagon bus. These “facts” were manufactured to serve the President and his agenda.
There is nothing wrong with advocating for the identification/treatment for Asthma. Asthma is real, it kills, causes much suffering, is costly and is prevalent through out the world.
However, asthma is not caused by an imperceptibly changing climate. Asthma is not made worse by an imperceptibly warming world. Asthma and asthma attacks can be exacerbated by: both indoor and outdoor air pollution; by exercise; by allergens; etc.
Children can develop asthma which has been associated with fetal exposure to parental cigarette smoking. Hmmmm.
Now that the POTUS has a child with asthma, my guess is that there is some parental guilt for cigarette smoking along with the usual climate change agenda.

It’s not just asthma being claimed as a health hazard from climate change.
Premise 1 – environment can negatively impact your health
Premise 2 – climate is part of the environment
Conclusion : Climate change negatively impacts your health
Prognosis : White House efforts to sustain ignorance and stupidity will prove moderately successful, being especially effective with those already stupid and ignorant.

The FDA and EPA is doing what it can. In 2011 they banned inhalers with CFC propellants, making inhalers much more expensive, and at first unobtainable. The reason? Zero tolerance for CFC’s.
Back in time:
Ban inhalers to save the environment? FDA and EPA gone mad.
Sep 22 2011 FDA: Over-the-counter asthma inhalers containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) will no longer be made or sold after Dec. 31, 2011
Users of Primatene Mist will need a prescription product to treat their asthma. Asthma accounts for one-quarter of all emergency room visits in the U.S. each year, with 2 million emergency room visits. Each day 11 Americans die from asthma. There are more than 4,000 deaths due to asthma each year, many of which are avoidable with proper treatment like over-the-counter asthma inhalers.
The reason for their phase out is U.S. in complying to a U.N. mandate to phase out all CFC’s since they burn up the ozone layer over Antarctica, and to a lesser degree over the North Pole.
During the heydays of CFC production we produced about one megaton annually of all types of CFC combined. This led to an increase in CFC of about 25 parts per trillion in the atmosphere per year. After 1994 the CFC’s were phased out and replaced with HCFC’s. The total amount of CFC’s in the air is now decreasing by about 1 percent per year.
A quick calculation shows that over the counter inhalers release maybe 100 tons of CFC’s per year. This would increase the level in the atmosphere by 0.002 parts per trillion per year. Since CFC’s now are decreasing by 20 parte per trillion /year it would speed up the decrease by 1/10000.
So this banning of CFC inhalers will decrease the time to return to previous levels from 100 years to 99 years and 361 days. And for this we are banning $10 inhalers and forcing asthma sufferers to use prescription devices at more than 40 dollars, and increase the number of emergency room visits, and even asthma related deaths. For four days in a hundred years?
In the meantime the Ozone hole is closing again by itself, maybe due to actions already taken.

As of 4/8/2015 only 652 days left of Obama… if we, as a nation, can survive that long.

The climate change that we have been experiencing is typical of the Holocene for the past 10,000 years. It is caused by the sun and the oceans and man does not have the power to change it. There is no real evidence that CO2 has any effect on climate. So if climate is the cause, then Nature is to blame. My asthma is caused by allergies primary to pollens and other environmentasl. Cold air can trigger attacks so I do better in warmer climates. When I was a kid my parents moved to the desert but as an adult I do better near the beach where I live. What has helped me most over the years is the development of new medications. I have been in over 6 different asthma drug approval studies. As far as particulate matter goes the real problem comes down to Man’s out of control population. If Man does not control his own population then Nature will, catastrophically. Instead of spending money trying to control our climate which we cannot do it, would be better to spend the money to control our own population which we can do.
