Merry/Happy Christmas!
(Anyone know how “Merry” became the common greeting in the US and “Happy” elsewhere?)

No. I wish someone would do the research I don’t want to bother to do — good question!
Apparently, at least in New York State where Clement Clarke Moore resided, “Happy” was still in common use as of 1823 when he published “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (anonymously …. hm…. maybe ….that’s it! Moore was trying to promote Britishisms and was afraid of retribution from the “Merry” crowd! … well, that leaves us with a big: I — don’t — know. (shrug and smile)).
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight —
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Merry Christmas, dear Gunga Din, my stalwart paraklete.

Then, there’s this (just came upon it in my annual reading of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol this evening)…
“A merry Christmas, uncle! God save you!” cried a cheerful voice. It was the voice of Scrooge’s nephew, *** “Christmas a humbug, uncle? … You don’t mean that… ” … “I do,’ said Scrooge. “Merry Christmas! What right have you to be merry? … You’re poor enough.”
(from Stave One — Marley’s Ghost)
A Christmas Carol was published around 1843. While Dickens spent several months in the United States in 1842, even in the slight possibility that this could have influenced him to put Americanisms in English mouths, Dickens was not in America at Christmastime that year.
It appears that A Christmas Carol was not, like A Tale of Two Cities, intended to be set in the past to any significant degree. Thus, given Dickens’ great familiarity with the spoken English of his day, it is pretty clear that “Merry Christmas” was still being said in England c. 1843.

To All Our Democrat and Republicrat Friends and WUWT Trolls:
Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, our best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. We also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2015, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishes.
To All Our Libertarian Friends:
Over the coming weeks and new year we wish you a barrier-free time enjoying whatever you want, whenever you want, with whomever you want. Although we wish you happiness and fulfillment in whatever you’re pursuing; don’t call us for bail money, to help bury a body, or for a blood transfusion, you’re on your own.
To All of Our Conservative Friends:
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Christmas should be a time of laughter and good cheer (hard as it may sometimes be), so:
This guy goes into a restaurant for a Christmas breakfast while in his hometown for the holidays. After looking over the menu he says, “I’ll just have the eggs Benedict.” His order comes a while later and it’s served on a big, shiny hubcap. He asks the waiter, “What’s with the hubcap?” The waiter says, “Well, there’s no plate like chrome for the hollandaise.”

To all at WUWT. Merry Christmas from NE England (temp 4.5 celsius at 16:45) on an overcast Christmas Day afternoon.
Many thanks to Anthony, Josh and all the contributors to this website’ it is a pity that the world’s politicians are not as well informed.
PS For those living in UK there is an e-petition to force a parliamentary debate on suspending the 2008 Climate Change Act with a view to it being eventually erased from the statute books. I am only the fourth signatory of it, which is disappointing to say the least!

Woke up this morning and turned on the phone, had a voice mail from my brother. Our first cousin was killed yesterday afternoon, Christmas Eve. He lost his wife to ALS in 2012. They have a daughter in her early twenties, she and his parents are raising her two younger siblings.

Dear Edward Martin,
I’ll be praying for your cousin’s family — all of you.
Life is so fragile. We can all honor your cousin by not wasting even one day of the time each of us has left.
Depending on your beliefs, this may or may not comfort you as it has me:
Love is eternal,
life immortal.
Death is only a horizon
and a horizon is only the limit of our vision.

With sympathy as you mourn a great loss,
Janice

Would be nice if there was a news link or something with the post. I am clueless as to the cartoon’s significance.
