News from the Northwest Passage:
The megayacht M/V LATITUDE completed a west bound passage. It left Nuuk, Greenland Aug 10 and passed the Arctic Circle in the Bering Strait on Sept 20. The route they took is not known, but probably Route 6, though it could have been Route 7.
The big news is that the first unescorted commercial cargo is going to make a passage over the next 3 weeks. The 2014-built M/V NUNAVIK, a Polar Class 4 bulk cargo carrier departed Deception Bay Sept 19 and plans a Route 6 Passage westbound with a destination of Bayuquan, China.
The NUNAVIK is a Polar Class 4, meaning it is designed for year-round operation in 1st year thick ice. It is 188.8 m length, 26.6 m beam, draft of 11.7 m. Deadweight 31,700 tons. No info on displacement, but from the dimensions it is between 50-57,000 tons. A NWP route is 40% shorter than a Panama. It will be interesting to see how late in the season it can operate.

Didn’t RSS show a sharp plunge in temp anomaly in August? Wasn’t 1998’s summer the huge el Nino’s peak? And yes, summer was typical of recent years, nowhere near the 1998 summer. August was almost 0.4C short of 1998’s record! 0.4C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know we keep saying “correlation isn’t causality” but this came out Friday and Obama’s Climatefest hits NYC on Monday. Anyone want to help me out here with some explanations?

This record can reasonably be considered false, even fraud. The only record is the divergence between UAH and RSS (which mirror each other well, compared to GISS with over .6 degrees divergence.
The door is closing on the Northwest Passage. Route is cut off at two places. One between Ballot Strait and Gjoa Haven, another east of Cambridge Bay. Nothing that should stop the CP4 M/V NUNAVIK. But it is no place to be without an ice rated ship.
