BREAKING: James Hansen to leave NASA to be full time activist

james hansen arrested

I checked first, thinking this was some April Fools joke, it appears legit. (h/t to Tom Nelson and Skiphil)

Climate Alarmist Jim Hansen leaving NASA on Wed. to devote himself to legal and political activism:

Hansen retiring from NASA to press legal and activist efforts

At the same time, retirement will allow Dr. Hansen to press his cause in court. He plans to take a more active role in lawsuits challenging the federal and state governments over their failure to limit emissions, for instance, as well as in fighting the development in Canada of a particularly dirty form of oil extracted from tar sands.

“As a government employee, you can’t testify against the government,” he said in an interview.

In the interview and in subsequent e-mails, Dr. Hansen made it clear that his new independence would allow him to take steps he could not have taken as a government employee. He plans to lobby European leaders — who are among the most concerned about climate change — to impose a tax on oil derived from tar sands. Its extraction results in greater greenhouse emissions than conventional oil.

Dr. Hansen says he senses the beginnings of a mass movement on climate change, led by young people. Once he finishes his final papers as a NASA employee, he intends to give it his full support.

“At my age,” he said, “I am not worried about having an arrest record.”

Dr. James Hansen in quotes

“What will happen is that the oceans will become so hot that the oceans will begin to boil and the oceans will end up in the atmosphere. And that’s what happened to Venus”

“I’ve come to conclude that if we burn all reserves of oil, gas, and coal, there is a substantial chance we will initiate the runaway greenhouse. If we also burn the tar sands and tar shale, I believe the Venus syndrome is a dead certainty,”
“We conclude that background global warming is continuing,”
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22000810
“And climate is nearing dangerous tipping points. Elements of a “perfect storm,” a global cataclysm, are assembled.”
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-james-hansen/twenty-years-later-tippin_b_108766.html
“The evidence indicates we’ve aimed too high — that the safe upper limit for atmospheric CO2is no more than 350 ppm,”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/27/AR2007122701942.html
“Paleoclimate evidence and ongoing global changes imply that today’s CO2, about 385 ppm, is already too high to maintain the climate to which humanity, wildlife, and the rest of the biosphere are adapted.”
http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/19/back-to-1988-on-co2-says-nasas-hansen/
“We have only four years left for Obama to set an example to the rest of the world.” [Jan 2009]
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/jan/18/jim-hansen-obama

So basically it’s too late to do anything (just look at co2 rise graph, going up and up) yet 16+ years global temperature standstill, a booming biosphere, no accelerations in rate of sea level rise, Greenland persists, Antarctica denies and the IPCC throws Hansen under the bus.

“Some thresholds that all would consider dangerous have no support in the literature as having a non-negligible chance of occurring. For instance, a “runaway greenhouse effect” —analogous to Venus–appears to have virtually no chance of being induced by anthropogenic activities…..”

Dr. James Hansen has Venus on the brain.

So, no change – move along, nothing new here.

This should have happened several years ago. I would be happy with this departure but does anyone not believe he will be replaced by another “Hansen” type. Until his replacement is named… how can anyone celebrate the departure of the devil we know. Hansen had one quality that skeptics could depend on. He was VERY predictable unlike the climate models he is so invested in. GK

If there’s one thing the alarmists like, is authoratative titles, such as he had at NASA. They’d never voluntarily relinquish any. Unless I miss my guess, he got dragged out of NASA kicking and screaming. All the so called reasons for leaving are just putting some topspin on getting the old heave ho.

Mr Hansen sez — “At my age,” he said, “I am not worried about having an arrest record.”
Here, I’ll fix it fer ya — “At my age,” he said, “I am not worried about having a brain.”

I wonder if anyone will go back on un-manipulate the temperature readings that Hansen has twisted and shaped over the years?

Hanson has always been a “full time activist”; ever since he failed as a NASA astronomer.

NOW, you have been given multiple sources for the quote.

One thing worth bearing in mind: Serious enviros are hugely unhappy with Obama. He said all the right words, but then permitted MORE oil drilling than Bush did. Some are calling Obama a ‘climate criminal’…..

I don’t know what’s going through Hansen’s “mind”, but this could be part of it.

To quote the article:
“He plans to lobby European leaders — who are among the most concerned about climate change — to impose a tax on oil derived from tar sands. Its extraction results in greater greenhouse emissions than conventional oil.
Dr. Hansen says he senses the beginnings of a mass movement on climate change, led by young people. Once he finishes his final papers as a NASA employee, he intends to give it his full support.”
Dear Mr. Hansen,
I am German. and I can assure you, that THE LEAST point on Europe’s current political agenda is putting a carbon tax on ANYTHING – even more so, as we are whitnessing the harshest, longest winter for DECADES in central Europe, actually. “Mass movement on climate change, led by young people” – my cold, freezing b*tt, Mr. Hansen.
By the way: Dou you realize that you are using a citation from Quotations from Chairman Mao – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotations_from_Chairman_Mao – , when you describe a mass movement, led by young people? In China this was called Cultural revolution – http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cultural_Revolution&oldid=542326369 – an was a DISASTER for the chinese people!
But I think that you quoted this line not by mistake, but deliberately. I think that your true colours are beginning to shine through, Mr. Hansen.
Anyway: In short time you will realize, that neither European leaders – By the way: Please, specify what you mean by “European leader”. “Leader” translates into “Führer” in German. And we sure have had enough of undemocratic Führers in Germany, Italy and Spain, I can assure you – neither will we accept a second coming of Chairman Mao to rule over Europe! – nor “the young” will in any way be inclined to follow your “leadership” in eco-activism, because it will only lead them into sorrow, grief and, finally, oblivion, like the Cultural Revolution did to the young masses in China, Mr. Chairman Hansen.
But please do, as you wish. Don’t let me stop you – because: “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake!” – Napoleon Bonaparte

Dr James Hansen deserves credit for at least one correct statement:
He said that beleiving in solar panels and windmills are like beleiving in fairy tales and easter bunnies.
Which shows he is more level-headed than 97.5% of green activists and the government officials who implement “green” nonsense policies.

There is the devil we know and then, his replacement…

He is leaving because the climate is refusing to cooperate with his prophetic work. He knows this at least at the subconscious level and is getting out while the getting is good.

He has targeted the European Union! Wise guy! You can not find worse idiots anywhere on this globe (maybe UN and its Koreans if they try their hardest). Herman van Rumpyu (google “Herman is de beste van…” where one Belgian vaudevilleartist De Clerc or something is totally disgracing the fool van R). Listen to UKIP`s Nigel Faraugue piss on van Rumpuy for 5 full minutes in the EU-parliament. “Who do you think you are? You have the charisma of a third rate lowly bank-clark and nobody has ever voted for you” …… all in a most wonderful top Cambridge Kings English. Farague is raging about the insertion of Mario Monti as the new viceroy of Italy a completly illegal act of real fascism by van R and the pride of Portugal Mr Barosso!

Hansen’s book is available on Google:
http://books.google.cl/books?id=mwva_7dPyAcC&pg=PR9&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false
Search for “Venus” to see the many references to the Venus Express & Venus Syndrome.
I know it’s hard to believe that any sane person, let alone a NASA scientist, could possibly really think what Hansen apparently does, yet it’s true. He’s either dumber than mud or a shameless liar.
But the mendacious coward has managed to get rich & famous spewing such blatant garbage.

To late James Hansen
To late the demon of History
Knows thy name
To late James Hansen
To long for you will you be known
To late James Hansen
To late at night the truth
Will come to you,
Hissing your name
To late James Hansen
You know your crimes,
You will never forget
The Demon of History
Red Eyes Glowing
Anger to you forever
You can not escape now

Question now Hansen is leaving to be a official full time activist, how will people be able to tell the difference given that his been doing that on the taxpayers dime for years ?
Question two , can he actual get any madder has a official activist then he was an a unofficial activist.

From the NYT article on Hansen leaving NASA’s GISS by By JUSTIN GILLIS
Published: April 1, 2013,

[ . . . ]
But those activities, going well beyond the usual role of government scientists, had raised eyebrows at NASA headquarters in Washington. “It was becoming clear that there were people in NASA who would be much happier if the ‘sideshow’ would exit,” Dr. Hansen said in an e-mail.
[ . . . ]
Dr. Hansen’s activism of recent years dismayed some of his scientific colleagues, who felt that it backfired by allowing climate skeptics to question his objectivity. But others expressed admiration for his willingness to risk his career for his convictions.
[ . . . ]
Dr. Hansen’s record has by no means been spotless. Even some of his allies consider him prone to rhetorical excess and to occasional scientific error.
[ . . . ]
His colleagues pointed out that this [ the “excessive carbon dioxide emissions might eventually lead to a runaway greenhouse effect that would boil the oceans and render earth uninhabitable, much like Venus”] had not happened even during exceedingly warm episodes in the earth’s ancient past. “I have huge respect for Jim, but in this particular case, he overstated the risk,” said Daniel P. Schrag, a geochemist and the head of Harvard’s Center for the Environment, who is nonetheless deeply worried about climate change.
[ . . . ]

– – – – – – –
The NYT article had some balance, in a minor way. Much more than we have seen over the years at Revkin’s NYT blog where the default setting is some kind of residual affection for those who failed to enforce a scientific consensus on the now unseated ‘settled climate science’. Is Revkin due for a change of venue independent of the gray lady?
QUESTION: I did not see a mention of who his replacement is. Did anyone else notice a mention of who his replacement will be?

So many accidents…hope it isn’t incompetence on the corporate order…at least the corporate is a persona that needs not a passport to swim in their riches in the Caiman Islands.
I would pour a litre of milk over your head and then a litre of crude crude and let you decide the fate of the cows.
I expect Hansen, his mark made, will enjoy a retirement full of the attention of select young activists 😉

Someone asks ‘I wonder from where Hansen will obtain his funding. Tides Foundation? …etc’
This is the point surely – there is a nice life as a paid funded and subsided activist and mouth piece (especially when you have no qualification on the subject) — travel hotel rooms meals
And the kudos … endless rounds of interviews with ignorant sycophantic journalists, green rooms galore. Not to mention trailing his coat as a martyr.
You can see why its turned his head. A few words in the right place and he can see a trip to Oslo beckoning.
