Two sources in California — longtime Democratic operative Chris Lehane and Corey Goodman, a member of the Pacific Institute board of directors — confirmed to POLITICO that Gleick authored the Huffington Post blog confessing to be the source of the leak.
Lehane, Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign press secretary, is helping Gleick pro bono with communications issues. Gleick is represented by John Keker, a prominent San Francisco-based white collar criminal defense attorney.

As many of us had surmised, Peter Gleick of the Pacific Institute is the Heartland document leaker. He has issued this statement:
Since the release in mid-February of a series of documents related to the internal strategy of the Heartland Institute to cast doubt on climate science, there has been extensive speculation about the origin of the documents and intense discussion about what they reveal. Given the need for reliance on facts in the public climate debate, I am issuing the following statement.
At the beginning of 2012, I received an anonymous document in the mail describing what appeared to be details of the Heartland Institute’s climate program strategy. It contained information about their funders and the Institute’s apparent efforts to muddy public understanding about climate science and policy. I do not know the source of that original document but assumed it was sent to me because of my past exchanges with Heartland and because I was named in it.
Given the potential impact however, I attempted to confirm the accuracy of the information in this document. In an effort to do so, and in a serious lapse of my own and professional judgment and ethics, I solicited and received additional materials directly from the Heartland Institute under someone else’s name. The materials the Heartland Institute sent to me confirmed many of the facts in the original document, including especially their 2012 fundraising strategy and budget. I forwarded, anonymously, the documents I had received to a set of journalists and experts working on climate issues. I can explicitly confirm, as can the Heartland Institute, that the documents they emailed to me are identical to the documents that have been made public. I made no changes or alterations of any kind to any of the Heartland Institute documents or to the original anonymous communication.
I will not comment on the substance or implications of the materials; others have and are doing so. I only note that the scientific understanding of the reality and risks of climate change is strong, compelling, and increasingly disturbing, and a rational public debate is desperately needed. My judgment was blinded by my frustration with the ongoing efforts — often anonymous, well-funded, and coordinated — to attack climate science and scientists and prevent this debate, and by the lack of transparency of the organizations involved. Nevertheless I deeply regret my own actions in this case. I offer my personal apologies to all those affected.

(Some of the released documents contain information about Heartland employees that has no bearing on the climate fight.) That is his personal tragedy and shame (and I’m sure devastating for his colleagues, friends and family).

Climatereality has a Youtube video dated 2/23/2012 bashing Heartland for teaching curriculum. It does make me wonder how coordinated this was with Gleick’s document release.

Great to see this attempted smear-campaign going down the drain. And the failure of climate debate “Gleickschaltung”.
More than anything else, the environmentalist’s response to the release of the Fakegate documents reveals just how rabid they are about their cause. It’s not possible to have a rational discussion with people in such an irrational state of mind.
Anyone find out about the disappearing EPA records of grants to the Pacific Institute? Surely any alteration of records (even temporary) must have been requested, authorised and implemented by someone, why?

One item that I think is unfinished business: Gleik has confessed to the fake email business. But has he confessed yet to personally manufacturing the fake strategy document? Last I heard he claimed that it came from an “anonymous source” by email. Well, I think this story is far beyond the limits of credulity. How does this source know to send him something with cut-and-pasted bits of actual Heartland documents prior to their release? What explains the lightning-striking-ten-times-in-the same-spot coincidence of receiving this at the same time as preparing to release his fraudulently obtained documents?
I think he needs to be pinned down on this. If he maintains the anonymous source story, then let him produce the anonymously-sent email.
The reason for this is not just to shame the guy further; it is that it strikes me that this is an additional indictable offence. Gleick is perhaps wise enough to know this, which is why his “confession” only deals with the fradulent method he used to get the actual documents. We should concentrate on both aspects equally, except that this one appears to have been under-pursued, and at this rate he may get away with it.
Chuck, I agree about how rabid the environmentalists’ are about their cause. But more than that, it reveals how much they are willing to blow things out of proportion in exactly the same manner as they did with CAGW. It matches the behaviour perfectly. What this implies is that science or not, they’ll take things to the extreme. We have even seen prominent figures support and defend Gleick’s actions. Some going as far as calling him a hero. So why would they stop there? No. This shows a pre-existing pattern. I believe Fakegate will have a much larger impact than did Climategate because this shows a pattern of behaviour that can be referenced.
Walter Starck’s analysis in Quadrant On Line has a chilling edge in its closing sentence:
“When the time comes for assessment of responsibility in the decline of Western civilisation, it would be a shame if the proponents of postmodern philosophy in the academy did not finally receive the recognition they so justly deserve.
American philosopher George Santayana identified ‘organic’ changes to a culture almost like the progression of a disease (my feeble reading of it). The decline of moral fabric starts in some area and something causes it to spread throughout the culture (or I suppose civilization eventually). The appearance of the term “rip-off” as a cool thing instead of a reprehensible act some 30-40 years ago, marks (for me) the onset of the erosion of moral fabric. The old cliches of “You never had to lock your door”, or “Your word is your bond”, or “A handshake is a contract” seem laughable now. When I was a kid, my brother found two $20 bills folded together on the street on his way home from elementary school. He gave them to my mother and she identified the sum as equal to the monthly old-age pension and it was the end of the month. She sent us up Berry St. in Winnipeg where the money was found with notices that a sum of money was found and giving our phone number to tack to the telephone poles. We received one call only from an elderly lady who mentioned the correct sum and where she thought she lost it (bus stop). Mother sent my brother to her house with the money and told him not to accept a reward. Since the “rip-off” was coined I don’t believe this is a common happening. The 60s with the youthful revolution brought many good things into the culture, I don’t deny that and, of course, I was there enjoying it all – my favorite day of it was going to work as a lab tech at Bedford College in London and listening to the new song “Yesterday”. The “do your own thing” philosophy was wonderfully liberating but it was a two-edged sword. Its more destructive edge led to “ripping-off” as a fun thing. Having thrown off the tyranny of the establishement, the church, etc., why not throw off the exacting guidelines of honesty, fair-play, charity,etc (remember how it was not whether you won or lost but rather how you played the game?). Well these went out the window and pharmaceutical cheating at the olympics and major league sports, wholesale cheating on exams, cooking up a phony resumes, accepting pay-offs, an explosion of white collar crime -Enron executives, whiz-kid insider traders, unbridled multibillion dollar illegal trading, junk bond rip-offs, some of whom became heros. Monica Lewinski, a young lady who got away with killing her children, and others got book deals and fame. Science held out maybe the longest but, the diseseae spread and scientific dishonesty, stealing other’s ideas, cooking data – all this became sort of okay, as long as long as you didn’t get caught and finally even getting caught could make you into a hero, too, with major newspapers and prominent personalities rationalizing and even applauding your dishonest, underhanded behaviour. This is when the ends began to justify the means. Now we have a respectable name for it – Post-Normal Science. If outdated morals catch up with you and an investigation is launched we have big whitewashes to deal with it – and hey you can then sue. Post Normal – means after the normal ceases to be. Logically it means abnormal has become the new normal.
Chuck and MrX, I agree Fakegate has shown a pattern of behaviour, any sensible scientist will be glad to see the back of someone polarising the debate in such a manner , but hopefully it will also spotlight some of the rediculous bias reporting from some science editors including the BBC and the Guardian.
All this was a consequence of the scientific societies (UK and USA) not dealing with and covering up the scientific malpractice highlighted by climategate (how they can say the emails were taken ‘out of context’ is unbelievable). Even some scientists agreeing with AGW are embarrassed that the scientific method and peer review process (in climate change science) has been brought into disrepute and then not dealt with, faecal matter sticks and spreads when you tread in it.
Unfortunately allowing ‘the debate is over’ and ‘the science is settled’ to continue will only lead to further Fakegates until the present scientific hierarchy either leave or are made to account for their inaction and cover up.

I notice that Shawn Otto has published a new post in the last few minutes in which he says he has done another textual analysis. This time he used only those words that Joe Bast acknowledges to be his own and still gets the result that it was written by Bast.

I would have liked to have commented on his blog, but I can’t see where to register. My own take is that the hypothesis that Peter Gleick wrote the strategy memo himself is the only one that provides a simple and psychologically plausible explanation for the errors and style of the memo. To me the fact that Joe Bast actually facilitated people analysing his own prose suggests that he is confident of his own innocence. Nonetheless, Shawn Otto’s analysis is out there, and I would be interested to the reactions from both sides. I thought the JGAAP analysis was a fascinating idea though I couldn’t get the programme to save and eventually gave up on it.
