Quote of the week – bonus edition

I said in my earlier QOTW that:

I’ve seen lots of quotes this week, many surrounding the Gleick Fakegate affair.

I was basically saying that there were so many to choose from in this target rich week, it was a tough choice.

Since today is Dr. Judith Curry’s birthday, (she’s 39, according to GISS adjusted data) it makes this bonus edition easier. Here’s her QOTW bonus on Gleick:

When ‘Heartlandgate’ first broke, I saw no parallels with Climategate. Now, with the involvement of Gleick, there most certainly are parallels. There is the common theme of climate scientists compromising personal and professional ethics, integrity, and responsibility, all in the interests of a ’cause’.

But her microsite rating is Class A-number-one!

Happy Birthday Dr. Curry! (I hope she stops by). You have it nailed- this is the ONLY point in which gleickgate is similar to Climategate.
So… what is the real number, before GISS Adjus- *slaps hands* You! Stay away from the keyboard!
(and, very odd: about every other week, I am unable to comment in here, unless I open a window to WUWT in mozilla Firefox. )

Well said Dr Curry. The common theme is the consistent malpractice on the “warmist” side of this exercise in politics…. It sure ain’t science, so it must be politics.

Fakegate, Heartlandgate, Gleickgate. We have to settledown with only one gate so that the message does not get lost. I vote to stay with Fakegate.
Thank you Heartland.

Happy birthday Judith!.
I wonder if she is aware, that according to the chronomeme of her contemporaries, while she may have been 39 for the last few time divisions, next week she’ll be 56, and the week after, 132, and three weeks from now, 357.
[chronomeme – new term: an ideological time period that is chosen to conflate scientific arguments made by climatologists supportive of the AGW pseudo-hypothesis]

I have to admire Dr. Curry. Even if she believes in CAGW she believes that scientists must maintain their ethical standards or they destroy the integrity of their field. Bravo Dr., Bravo!

The problem with true believers in the CAGW Faith is that they do not see any equivalence between their actions and those of deniers. The thought that opposing the true faith is in any way valid has not entered their minds. The Heartland institute is a den of heretics. Any amount of money donated to them, no matter how small, is a thought crime. Any donor must be pursued and made to Confess. Because they hold the only truth, we who doubt must be made to Convert, even under pain of death 😉 The fact that they exposed such a tiny budget $7m, does not compare to the billions they spend because they are right! I think more was spent on the 10:10 snuff film than the whole Heartland budget revealed by their Hero. Lets all take a moment today to give a donation to someone on our side.

I can’t really add much to this (I’m 36 years young)((I see what you did there Mr Watts))

I however can say that my Dad has been skeptical about his marriage decisions after reading her blog. 😉

I am reminded of the lady in Ann Landers who was really 71 years old and whenever she went to the drug store by herself, she always got her senior’s discount. But when her boyfriend was with her, she always paid the regular amount.

Laffaire Gleick reminds me of the old British comedy series, That Was The Week That Was aka TW3.
For another Quote of the Week, a commenter at Climate Audit posted the following from A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream,
“Bottom (wearing the head of an ass): Nay, I can gleek upon occasion.
Titania: Thou art as wise as thou art beautiful.”

Happy Birthday Dr. Curry!
If ever there were a counter to the accusations of total demonizing on the part of those of us who love real science, the outflow of birthday wishes to you should put a firm plug in that test tube. I appreciate you willingness to enter into, and then continue a – dare I say it – adult dialog with those of us here.
Thank you!

I am reminded of the lady of a certain age who was appearing inj court and stated her age as 39. And the judge inquired; “Weren’t you up before this bench only 15 months ago, and didn’t you then also state that your age was 39?”
The lady replied: “Yes, M’lud. I am not the type of woman who says one thing one day and a completely different thing another day…”
Happy birthday, Judith!

February 26, 2012 9:52 am

Happy Birthday, Dr. Curry! You’re an eminently fair climate scientist, in contrast to the Gleicks, Hansens, Manns, etc. Would that more reporters paid attention to what you’re saying.

February 26, 2012 10:04 am

Many years ago, long before any gates, I asked Dr. Curry a few questions, amongst others about the Arctic ice passing Greenland at the eastside at a strange moment (with relative high temperatures). I received a nice answer. My first thought was: that is someone who stands behind Science and has no Ivory Tower mentality. Over the years, she has shown that my first thought was true, despite all the pressure from the “consensus”… My respect for an integer scientist!
Have a nice birthday, Dr. Curry!

Dr. Curry, as you may have noticed, I do not mince words or say things just for effect.
So you can be assured that when I wish you the happiest of birthdays and a long and productive life, there are no hidden messages or caveats. I have nothing but respect for the difficult “middle ground” that you have carved out in a fractious debate. You have become (partly by default as one of the few brave AGW adherents) the go-to person for the media, and I cannot imagine a more apt person for the task.
All the best to you, many happy returns,
w.

Antony;
Re; Dr Curry – “(she’s 39, according to GISS adjusted data)”
Very witty but perhaps a touch ungentlemanly. One should know when not always to be sceptical.
Keep up the good work.

MHR Dr. Curry and I add my appreciation for the courageous manner in which you have stood for integrity in science. It is perhaps the saddest aspect of this whole controversy that the positions you’ve advanced, which in any even modestly rational world would not be in the least bit controversial, should have required any special courage to express, although from the venomous reactions you have generated, it is clear that the courage required cannot be overestimated.
BTW Anthony, although you’ve had two pops at QOTW, you’ve still managed to miss the one that I think is not only QOTW, but probably Quote of the Century so far. It’s from Megan McCardle at The Atlantic
“After you have convinced people that you fervently believe your cause to be more important than telling the truth, you’ve lost the power to convince them of anything else.”

Several of us, when asked our age, say we are “38 and holding.” So, friend Walt told that to a young grandson. The little guy replied: “Grandpa, how old will you be if you let go?”

Means even more when you use the Shakespearean definition of “gleek” – which means ‘to trick; to make a gibe or jest (at a person).’
