MANNx TEDx and all that

The Mann at TEDx PSU (Penn State) video is now available. There’s no political content warning unfortunately, as Mann spends more time standing if front of giant faces of politicians and political pundits he hates than graphs and data. This TEDx is light on science, heavy on political trash talk. He even manages to work a photo of a child with a polar bear in at the end. The best part of the video is that it is only 16 minutes long. Video below. From the YouTube description:

TEDxPSU – Michael Mann – A Look Into Our Climate: Past To Present To Future

Michael Mann is a professor in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, a climatologist, and the director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University. Michael is best known for his extensive background and research in the field of paleoclimatology. This work led to Michael’s graph of temperature trends over the last thousand years, popularly coined as the “hockey stick graph” because of its resemblance to the sporting equipment. The graph has received acclaim and criticism since its publishing. He has received many awards and honors including, but not limited to, the Outstanding Scientific Paper Award by NOAA in 2002 and also was named one of the 50 Leading Visionaries in Science and Technology by Scientific American. Michael is also one of the founders of RealClimate.org, a highly acclaimed climate science website that was chosen in 2005 as one of the top 25 “Science and Technology” websites by Scientific American and as one of the top 15 “green” websites by Time Magazine in 2008. Michael’s educational background includes an M.S. degree in Physics from Yale, and a Ph.D. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Look at Mann from the perspective of someone who knows NO details of the debate.
He looks like the poor little victim of us nasty realists.
Among other offenses, we actually had the balls to ask for his public record emails.
This is pure, carefully scripted, propaganda at its best.
Thanks

I wanted to see what he says about the kid and the Polar Bear; would he mention that the population of them is increasing, or that the population of kids is increasing? No:
“…ethics, children, grandchildren, choices, still time to make the right choices…”
So his PR guy has given him a pretty bland generic chicken little speech. Hm, lets try another moment in the video.
10:33, no science, Climategate, Inhofe, usual suspects.
Hm, another try.
3:56 projections, uncertain, but if Hansen is right we’d be leaving our children and grandchildren a different planet, generic catastrophe slideshow with ragged looking Polar Bear on a small ice flow (4:16).
But Hansen’s projections have already been falsified, why doesn’t he mention that? He’s a liar, lying here in this video, and his recent “science communications” course was teaching him how to lie better. Mann, you need more dramatic music when you show the generic catastrophe photos. Fire your PR guy; get some opera choirs…

…and he skipped that the 24,000 Palin e-mail’s scrutinized by an army of Marx stream media revealed a relentlessly hard working advocate doing the right thing and doing it smartly. MSM propagandists could barely even find a way to take any out of context. Some could not even avoid some neutered praise for the lady.
Perhaps the Team will argue that 5,000 e-mails is not not a large enough statistical sample, and that it doesn’t compare to the Palin release which may have been in the 90% (+) range.
Perhaps FOIA can help solve that problem. Would 200,000 more be enough to provide context and vindicate them as relentlessly hard working advocates doing the right things and doing them smartly?

“The Mann at TEDx PSU (Penn State) video is now available.”
It’s not surprising to see that the climate “scientists” are now making fools of themselves all on their own…

When will TEDx allow someone to provide a skeptic presentation? I vote Chris Horner

That was almost, Almost as good as Nixon’s 18 minutes of Silence.

No, no, no. 18 minutes of silence is much preferred over this clap-trap. I’m surprised it didn’t end with Mann nailed to a cross and being raised into heaven.

It’s no good doing a point/counter point analysis because the biggest outrage is what he doesn’t say!

A comment on YouTube:
ARe you serious? That may be the dumbest, most uninformed, and uneducated post ever written. Heat has ALWAYS been associated with increased disease and famine. You people are so imbecilic that you believe your own horseshit. Again, GO BACK TO WATTS UP!

Criminal abuse of a good name; I think they should be sued for tainting the hallowed name of Ted!
Heavy propaganda pressure by the Mannster on many fronts; I’m sorry (NOT!), I didn’t watch the vid, I’m still trying to get over reading Mann’s spoiled whiny and completely self serving opinion piece in the WSJ. If anyone gets the paper WSJ edition, I do recommend using his letter in bird cages, cat boxes, pig pens and wherever it will do the any good. Don’t put it face up though, or your critters will get sick too.
There must be a lot more PR effort and emails going on in the CAGW bunkers for them to put out so much of this trash. While the team is trying to use all of the free public forums they can, they’re must be paying a substantial chunk of change to plan this assault on common sense.

Notice that, however subtle, his voice starts shaking at the beginning of his take on Climategate. Could be due to suppressing anger, but it could also be due to a mixture of anger and anxiety from addressing a guilt laden topic.

Please forgive the x-posting, but as I wrote yesterday (which just happened to be the 2nd anniversary of my own blog-launch!) when I viewed this via BH:
I’m trying to put this demonstration of “Mann in mellow motion mode” into perspective (so that the 16.06 minutes taken out of my life to watch this doesn’t completely ruin my day) – bearing in mind our host’s imprecation that we “try to avoid ranting”.
So, here goes …
1. Mann doesn’t seem to do very well when he’s in mellow motion mode … far too many uhm’s and uh’s peppering (padding?!) his pleas.
2. This was a TEDxPSU* production, which should not be confused with (or allowed to taint) the real TED.
* “TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.”
3. This soft-pedal exercise in unabashed propaganda presentation was evidently uploaded to the Tube on Dec.5. Mann did make reference to Climategate; mind you, I was too distracted by his uhm’s and uh’s to notice whether he dared to actually name it, I did catch his ‘almost two years to the day’.
4. It appears that this TEDx event actually occurred on Nov. 13/11
[which led me to a … ]
5. I wonder if The Saint got wind of Mann at TEDx, and if this was what triggered her/his decision to release CG2?! It is certainly not doing much to assist Mann in reinventing himself, is it?! [viz his more recent, true to form – and far from “mellow” – WSJ rant]
6. For an antidote, I heartily recommend the real TED’s presentation by Dr. Hans Rosling:

How did they find an audience that wouldn’t heckle? I couldn’t help but proclaim to the monitor “LIAR” several times as he went over the Hansen projections. “Hide the decline” was on my mind the entire time.

Yes, I watched it, and I was impressed, but not in a good way. This is not science, this is public relations. This is manipulative propaganda, and Mann is very good at it. I suspect he has had a lifetime of practice. He could be a successful politician, but sadly, he is representing himself as a scientist.
I am left in a very uncomfortable position. After seeing this performance, I feel like I should take a shower and use a rather harsh detergent to wash with. Unfortunately, my lunch hour is up and I need to go back to work.

An incredible Professor Mann quote; start at about 15:30:
“… Climate Change isn’t simply a problem of politics or economics, it’s a problem of ethics.”
I believe Steve McIntyre once speculated the evolution of the Hockey Stick could be a text book case for how not to perform statistics. Same goes for ethics.
