Call for guest authors – I'm stepping away from WUWT for awhile

Now that BEST has given themselves enough rope with their PR shenanigans, I have a new paper to finish. I also have papers to review. One of the upsides/downsides of publishing is that you get asked to review papers that have been submitted.  On the upside I appreciate the opportunity, on the downside I’ve got a smorgasbord full plate.

WUWT is going to have to be secondary over the next few weeks, thus I’m going to significantly limit my posting and especially my interaction here. I may do one post in the morning, maybe one in the evening if it doesn’t take much time, but the primary goal is to finish this new paper. I don’t need distractions from commenter arguments while I get this done as we all know they can be a huge time-sink.

Thus I ask my moderators, and my many friends worldwide to help carry the load to keep WUWT fresh and informative while I work on this new paper.

Existing guest authors, you know who you are. Moderators, I need help in the form of learning how to take those guest posts and publish them. It isn’t hard, if you can run MS-Word you can publish to a blog. I have a nice publishing tool to help you that you can install on your PC to help with

Email me (those who have my email address) or use the contact form in the menu bar About>Contact.

Thanks for your consideration.

To my readers, thank you for your patience. Please understand that I must put my efforts where they will do the most good. You can help too with comments in Tips & Notes and the “Submit Story” section.

I should add that there’s two kinds of guest author positions.

1- for doing original pieces

2- for handling press release postings and excerpts from relevant news stories.

Thanks for all your efforts. Time indeed to step back from the tar pit of the web and get some academic stuff done. You deserve the “vacation”.

You’ve earned some time off, but it sounds like you’re going to be just as busy doing all that other stuff.
I’m sure your appointed Mods will keep everything under control, so don’t worry. Just keep up the good work as you can.

In Britain it is called a busman’s holiday, if I am not mistaken. Do not work to hard (like saying that is going to make a difference)! I am at your service.
Even if you do not ski, there is plenty for the family to do in Banff in winter. It is spectacular. Consider this an invitation.

You mean “for a while”?

October 26, 2011 11:08 am

Anthony,
We have your six.
Go do what you have to do and don’t worry. The WUWTers will ensure that order is maintained.
Don’t work too hard and take some time to be with family. It is a most efficacious remedy!

Good luck, Anthony. Just want to say I appreciate everything you’re doing which has made this such a magnificent blog. I’m a recent convert to climate skepticism – up to a few months ago I just toed the ‘scientific consensus’ line. Since I retired from work, I’ve had time to investigate the science behind all the hype…and to my amazement, it was either missing or far from conclusive. WUWT has been an education in itself. I used to think the skeptics were just far-right free-market extremists, the equivalent of creationists who put dogma ahead of evidence and logic. Now I know better, and in no small part that’s down to your excellent blog. Keep up the good work and don’t ever assume that you’re just preaching to the choir – in my case you certainly weren’t.

Mmmmmmmmm, smorgasbord !!!
Good luck and enjoy your “break” !!

I would like to guest post. Does WUWT require an ill-considered rant? I can write 2,000 words by midnight.
Thanks.

Whooo whoooo…a new paper 🙂
Would BETTER be a good name for it?

All my best wishes and hope manage to work to plan. I suspect WUWT is your “favorite baby” thou – staying away will be a bit like ignoring your dog ——.

Where I used to work they called them “sabbaticals” where you are supposed to add some R&R and (additional) community service to you existing workload. Try to maximize the R&R if you can, and it you take the work to Banff I highly recommend the effort.

Please do go and do the other things you need to take care of and try not to worry about the blog for a while. Your recent posts list on the sidebar has 15 items and doesn’t even go back 48 hours. The last time I checked at RC 15 posts took you back more than a month and a half. I’ve been having a hard time finding the time to keep up with the posts let alone the comment threads. With the rising tide of PR BS(Bad Science) you could probably keep three blogs afloat just by posting all the phony press releases entirely without comment.
Of course, if your past performance in announcing these mini-sabbaticals is any indication, we’ll probably see more posts rather than less. I haven’t checked the DSM to see if they’ve introduced blogging addiction to their growing list of things people would rather do than whatever they are supposed to be doing, which seems to be the new definition of addiction, but if you can’t stick to your guns on this one we may have to talk about organizing an intervention( for all the too literal minded denizens here, that last bit was an attempt at humor)
All kidding aside, go take care of your work, your family, and yourself. Try to find a day or two to just kick back, you certainly deserve it. By my estimate you are at minimum a top contender, if not an absolute shoo-in for the “Hardest Working Man in The Blogosphere”.

“Laurie Bowen (the troll?)” ???
I recall seeing comments from Laurie Bowen, without “the troll?”. Why have you added “the troll?” to your name?

Here’s hoping everything goes smoothly on your other endeavors.
Heck, here’s hoping everything goes smoothly here, too.

Ah-ha! Their cunning plot is revealed!
The Climate Science™ Establishment cannot directly defeat Anthony Watts, he has real physical observations and real science on his side.
So they will subvert him by making him part of the Establishment. They will drown him in papers, again take advantage of his charitable nature by filling his head with many instances of “perhaps that could be true” and “I could see where that makes sense.” Then one day soon he will no longer know for certain what the real truth is, but he will know what is Climate Truth. Then he will be theirs!
…or he’ll simply expire from exhaustion, which will be greeted as “cheering news.”
Take care, Anthony. And remember to trust them no further than you can throw them with only one hand. You’ll need the other hand to hold a club for when they try to slither right back at you and attack.

kadaka;
Beat me to it. I was going to observe that he was now on the slippery slope; as an acknowledged Reviewing Authority, the next step would be Eligible for Gravy Train Ridership (with a few minor tweaks in intros and conclusions to papers all that is required), and there he is: Co-Opted!
One of the career advantages of LukeWarmism, I guess!

I thought I was joking when I said in my previous comment that we might have to organize an intervention, but I see that since posting this Anthony has put up three new posts. Maybe I wasn’t kidding.

Anthony: good luck and may your work go well. For anyone who’s in a position to help, I have a request for comment and possibly some experimentation. Here it is. Where thermometers are scarce, people interpolate. I believe in Antarctica and Australia and other places, the blanks that need filling are many hundreds of kilometers wide; and the techniques used to fill them are open to question. My question: has anybody tried to test the quality of those interpolation methods against real data from a more-dense area? For example, what if we took the USA, randomly deleted half the stations for which we have “good” data, and then ran the interpolation method using the remainder? This would produce calculated values that we could then compare to the actual values at the deleted stations. We could score the interpolation method (and see if it had a bias upward or downward) by measuring the differences. Does that make sense? Has it been done? Would it be worth doing, or is it a sideshow? …Thanks.

Go for it Anthony.
Your paper is THE most important thing right now. Hope you get it published or at least a pre-peer review up before Durban.

Yes!
Thanks in advance, it will surely be a good paper.

I suggest specific topic threads. I know the posted articles start their own, but throw out a subject for no reason and see what happens.

Good luck & BEST wishes Anthony, your own work is more important at the end of the day. I look forward to your swift return, but feel sure with the calibre of bloggers here this site will remain at the top quality end it has achieved!
Very interesting “Frozen Planet” from Sir David Attenborough last night, of course despite the wonderful photography & the amazing new discoveries being cited (I though the science was settled :-)), it is just a tv programme to promote AGW as he sadly is firmly entrenched within that dubious camp!

Well damn! First time I commented on this site was a few days ago to say how much I enjoy reading this blog and keep it up, and instead, there you go. Can’t help but sympathize though since I am trying to finish up a paper myself that I am not supposed to do during my full time job hours…gets tricky! Look forward to seeing what the guest writers make of it and also very much to your return.
