Until recently he was always there when a new ‘record’ appeared, or a glacier retreated. He was a breathless and apparently wholly convinced warmer. Also he is a good scientist.”

One of New Zealand’s top climate scientists has just been fired from his job at the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric research (NIWA).
Dr Jim Salinger has been the public face of the organisation for three decades, but says it was his unauthorised talking to the media that’s got him sacked.
Salinger, whose work as a science communicator has earned him accolades and even contributed to a Nobel Peace Prize, says he is now planning to sue his former employer for unjustified dismissal because according to him, he cannot understand why he was sacked.
“It’s not as though I’m doing bad science, it’s not as though I’m not performing and so I’m really astounded”.
What got Salinger fired is something that in the past brought him high praise – talking to the media.
Salinger says he always believed that his media work actually brought NIWA into repute.

To the Honourable Mr Brill, even Franz Josef & Fox were retreating during those decades. Where messers Chin & Salinger fail the N.Z. public is not mentioning that glaciers in N.Z., and around the world, have been receeding since at least the 1880’s, some 70 years before the AGW proponents believe the influence of man took centre stage. Perhaps that sort of knowledge is a bit dangerous for Joe & Joesephine Public to have. It may lead to difficult questions that they freely admit they can’t answer, like what caused the glaciers to recede prior to AGW?
Our previous Prime Minister climbed Mt Kilamanjaro some time ago and shook her head at what “they” had done to cause the snows to disappear from that lofty mountain. This must be the same “they,” that Trev & Jim allude to in the news item. Perhaps Helen wasn’t informed by her experts that the snows of Kilamanjaro had been receeding since the 1880’s also, and not just since 1950.
“They, ” of course are “We!” We, the other people who continue to prosper from the efforts of our forebears in a way that those forebears would expect us to, as opposed to those who think that we should all feel guilty for the prosperity that we now enjoy. Those who think we should endure poverty, famine and deprivation in the name of saving the planet, all the while giving each other fatuous awards on our behalf. No thanks.
In the end Jim you failed as a scientist. You failed to show enough continuing scpticism ‘a good scientist’ would.
