Dear UCS Supporter,
We’re looking for a few good artists.
Today, the Union of Concerned Scientists is launching the 2012 UCS Science and Democracy Editorial Cartoon Contest. We’re seeking cartoons that explore the complex relationship between science and democracy in America.
Twelve cartoons will be selected as finalists to be featured in the 2013 UCS Science and Democracy Calendar. Then, we’ll ask the public to choose the best cartoon, which will go on the calendar’s cover. Each artist who submits an entry that is chosen as a finalist will receive a cash prize.

I wonder what sort of cartoon Josh will come up with?
I asked Kenji what his plans were, and he suggested some sort of performance art photo using the UCS mousepad that arrived months late. Here’s a photo of when he got it in March, only 6 months after he joined and was accepted as a member.
I like this cartoon about peer review in last years contest, I don’t think UCS realized the joke was on them:
Send them Kenji’s footprint. Done in carbon, of course…
Why is it that after over 6 months that Kenji has been a member of the UCC the UCC have not yet realized Kenji is a dog?
The cartoon above should have had “lavish funding” just above “scientific research”.
I was thinking more along the lines that Kenji could poop on that mat and send that in … it would take them ages to ‘work out’ that one too ROTFLMAO … couldn’t help it, sorry.
Obviously nobody at UCC reads WUWT. I’m not surprised…
I mean I’m not surprised because UCC seems to have an ideological objection to WUWT and won’t associated with anybody whose views they disagree with. WUWT is different: disagreement is allowed here, providing it is expressed in a civil way.

Which would be appropriate as many Greens would rather spend (other people’s) money saving some random critter “living in Nature” rather than a human. Especially a currently-alive person mired in endless third-world poverty, as they’re too poor to donate to their “charitable” organizations. “How dare you people consider using fossil fuels for heating your hovels? Don’t you know you’re offsetting those ignorant Westerners who still aren’t driving electrics?”
Question: If Kenji does win a cash prize, how will Anthony cash the check? Maybe Kenji should add a note to the submission to make it out to “his father”. Although if just a small amount, he could just have it put towards next year’s dues.

That is the best cartoon I’ve seen for years – we have a cartoonist over here called Dave Walker who does similar things for the Church Times. Since the CofE buys into the green agenda (at the higher levels anyway), your cartoon could easily fit with it!

The cartoon that shows the relationship between science (according to UCS) and democracy would be a Trojan horse carrying socialism, world government, eugenics and the like, rolling into the public square with fanfare while crushing protestors who dare to disagree.
I suspect the key here is “democracy”: I’m sure there will be many drawings that indicate that a minority of schleptics [sic] are ruling over the democratic majority of those that truly understand how we are killing ourselves.
Ironic, really (even though we don’t live in a Democracy in the USA). For those who talk of living in a democracy, if the majority speak and ‘deny’ global warming (ahem: Global Warming) shouldn’t we accept that as the democratic will of the majority?
Honestly, with the cartoon talking of Science and Democracy (with respect to the narrow scientific aspect in hand) how can it not be partisan?
Democracy doesn’t have a significant place in science, or indeed anywhere. While it is a very useful tool in a variety of decision making processes (electing our representatives, for example) we simply cannot democratically decide what science to believe or accept as the truth.
I like cartoons, though. I’m also interested in political processes (hence the fixation on the choice of the word democracy). Cartoons do often sum up the partisan ideologies: ‘how we see you and how you see us’.
Got possibilities. There is this rule that needs to be hacked, though:
So, you don’t even have to be a UCS member, that takes some of the fun out of it. Any age – pass. Parent/Guardian – I declare you qualify as guardian. It would be awkward if Kenji were employed as a guard dog though. “Must agree to be bound” – I’m sure the UCS can find someone to do that.
Note this doesn’t say anything about the Contestant actually having to have drawn the cartoon. So, if Josh draws it, signs it “Kenji,” then he’ll be motivated by threat of being bound to disclaim all involvement.

Yes, I wonder how many were double entendres on purpose. What is interesting is the glimpse into the thinking of U.C.S. They seem to see themselves as the “Davids” fighting the “Goliath” of big business and big government, when we see it (backed up by the facts) as just the opposite.

Oh, I do not think that is a real problem given WUWT has a lot of US residents from all over the USA.
The rules state:
So someone can ask a resident to be his “Guardian” heck it can be legal with a LIMITED POWER OF ATTORNEY. I do this for a friend in New York who has business interest here in North Carolina.

I have found it is more “Published Rubbish” exiting that censor-matic box and being applied to New Scientist, Science Daily and Nuture’s pages. (just to name a few)
How do the WUWT unique readership numbers compare with the UCS membership or readership? UCS may be the “David” in that comparison…
When you send in Kenji’s contribution, note his age on the form and sign it as guardian. Asterisk it, and in very small print at the bottom translate into dog years.
