“Justice has been done” – UPDATE: Osama Bin Laden compound found on Google Earth

That quote from president Obama tonight. The story here

“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet” – Afghan proverb

UPDATE #3: Zeroing in on the compound. Threes a charm. Like anything in the fog of war, early reports can be erroneous. The first two seemed plausible, especially the second one with the high walls. Now the official Google Earth Blog weighs in:

[UPDATE: The location has essentially been confirmed by the BBC
(via Ogle Earth).
] You can fly there with this KML file or view the image below:

UPDATE: I have the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan mapped on Google Earth below:

Lat/Lon  34.146371°  73.216925°  Google Maps  It sure looks like a fortress. I’m betting they special forces landed the copters in the field to the east, near the blue roofed building, which is the Government Post Graduate College No.1 Another view here

UPDATE2: The Atlantic’s story was wrong, here is the (likely) correct location:

Lat/lon 34.187663° 73.242617° See it on Google Maps

Here it is with the PMA Kakul Military academy mentioned in news reports h/t to Ryan Maue:

Wikipedia has already made an update about the PMA Kakul Military academy:

In May 2011, the US military conducted a raid and killed Osama bin Laden in a compound less than 1 km from Burn Hall Army Academy in Abbottabad. Burn Hall is a junior academy that feeds the Pakistan Military Academy. Bin Laden’s extended refuge near the academy is cited as evidence of the Pakistani government’s collusion with al Qaeda.

That places the compound back near the city center where we originally placed it from reports by The Atlantic. The compound originally identified din’t quite match the news reports.(see image below).

The imagery of the compound above described as “very high walled” matches the image of the white building and the tall white walls around it. I also just saw some helmet cam video of the scene in flames, and the white walls were visible.

The Google added red pointer location for OBL’s compound Abottabad in their database in the images above was originally near the city center, See below for the original placment Google had. But the pointer lat/lon has been updated within the last hour to the new location near PMA Kakul shown above. I think the locations above are correct, as they match news accounts much better.

Outstanding. The fact that we was living in a mansion near Pakistan’s capital is disturbing, but not surprising. I remember back after September 11th thinking they would get him some day. I’m glad they didn’t give up. I think everyone one in America wished they were with that group that killed him. Imagine that.

So now the dollar is rallying and silver and gold are heading down. The stock market should be giddy. I see opportunities in the air to get set up for the next tank, that we all should know by now follows the solar minimums. I hope this will turn the tide in Iraq and gets their terrorists and neighbors to give it up because many people there want peace and prosperity and the entire world would benefit from that oil supply.

Well, maybe, but I think I’ll go with Totten’s opinion:

  24. Robert M says:

I would not usually post my political opinion out where everyone can see it, but on this occasion I think it is time to let er rip…

    1. It is good that Osama has payed the ultimate price at the hands of Americans.
    2. I wish it had happened years ago.
    3. I can’t believe Obama had the stones and was willing to give the order, I guess, for a moment he actually did his duty. (Or, and more likely, this all went down before our illustrious leader could put a stop to it…)
    4. A real president would be wondering aloud why Pakistan (And muslims in general) was harboring this guy, not, I say again, NOT, worrying about the sensibilities of said country. (Or said religion.) At some point politics has to take a back seat, and you have to choose sides, then you fight till one side says “Uncle”. If you quit before the other guy has had the #$^% kicked out of him and his mother wishes he had never been born you will be fighting him again at a time and place of his choosing.

  25. The Monster says:

I’m not so sure about the landing. They might very well have done fast rope insertion into the compound, then headed for flat ground or roof nearby as LZ to use for extraction.

I doubt that such operational details will ever be revealed, though. Wouldn’t want the next guy to have info like that.

  27. Ryan Maue says:

Are we sure this is the compound, Anthony. It’s the default marker for the city when typed into googleEarth. Hey Keith.

I would say that Osama has been brought to justice for his crimes. I get the feeling that you have a problem with that opinion. Do you feel he was innocent? Why did you name The UN, and Pakistan or even Interpol as organizations to try him? I don’t remember him plotting to kill, and then killing thousands of Pakistani’s or Brit’s.

You posted up twice, why don’t you tell us why…

  30. Anthony Watts says:

    Ryan –

My source was The Atlantic Magazine, see link at bottom of story. They didn’t plot sat imagery though. I noted that marker too. Thinking it was odd, but this whole episode was apparently about hiding in plain sight. What better place to hide than next to the old police station? And just look at the building, I looked all around the city, nothing quite like that. OTOH it is possible the Atlantic has it wrong and so do I. We’ll know more soon I’m sure. – Anthony

  31. John F. Hultquist says:

Bin Laden had the money, the means, the followers, and the will to declare war on the West, especially the people of the United States of America. The government of the US is charged with providing for the security of its people and it so doing has followed the constitution. This is not revenge as Keith in Perth tries to spin it. Revenge would have been to have sent a stealth bomber and dropped several large devices in and around that compound.

Ryan – follow up. The marker in Google Earth was apparently added by Google itself. You can do a search for “Osama bin Laden compound Abbottabad” and find it in their database. Maybe the copter crashed after takeoff, maybe the landed at the academy and went by vehicle…who knows at this point?

  34. crosspatch says:

That may not be the compound. I have heard that the compound was a little outside of town on a dirt road. Also, I have seen video that is purported to be the compound and it is not consistent with that location that has been floating around the web (and that you posted above).

I would take that location with a grain of salt for now.

  35. Ryan Maue says:

So what? At least the SOB is finally dead — and we don’t have to put up with the UN playing pattycake with him.

  43. Keith in Perth says:

I’ll explain myself a little more Robert M.
Like most people, I also assume he was guilty of the crimes attributed to him and many more. But me assuming it doesn’t make it fact. Justice is about proof, and the perception of due dilligence. By waltzing into another country and blowing up people, the US will only make it’s own people happy.
The reason I mentioned interpol, the UN or Pakistan is that they at least have some claim to authority in the situation. The US has none.
I am not saying it is wrong that he is dead, but there is no way it should be labelled as “justice” If so we should bring back lynch mobs because they certainly felt they were dealing out justice.

It would have been justice if the UN, Interpol or Pakistan had captured him, and then tried him and executed him.

The US going into another country and blowing people up is revenge

You are under the mistaken impression this was a law enforcement matter, and Interpol or the United Nations had jurisdiction.

He issued a formal written declaration of war against the U.S. and all our allies in 1998, then backed it up with several unprovoked attacks, that in the case of the U.S. killed 3,000 , not to mention their attack on the U.S.S. Cole DDG-67 a capital ship of the U.S Navy, while in harbor killing 17 crew members and injuring 39.

If any nation in the world had done either of those things it would be universally recognized as an act of war, and it is perfectly legitimate for the attacked party to respond in kind any where any time they can find the “head of state” of the attacking nation.

    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/terrorism/international/fatwa_1998.html

” On that basis, and in compliance with God’s order, we issue the following fatwa to all Muslims:

The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies — civilians and military — is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it, in order to liberate the al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy mosque [Mecca] from their grip, and in order for their armies to move out of all the lands of Islam, defeated and unable to threaten any Muslim. This is in accordance with the words of Almighty God, “and fight the pagans all together as they fight you all together,” and “fight them until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God.”

He was the leader of a group at war with the U.S. and we have every right to take what ever measures are necessary any where in the world to take him down. This has been established by precedent for literally 1000’s of years. There is not a single major nation in the world that has not taken similar lethal action against a foreign belligerent be they nation or criminal organization while engaged in recognized open warfare.

The same legitimacy would have attached if the group that took action was from the UK or Spain or any other nation that had suffered a direct attack on their soil or their overseas interests.

He started it, and paid the price for his actions.

Ignoring the link I give, it is not Osama, who in his last pictures/videos ten years ago looked gray and emaciated like an el greco figure.

Why the hurry to bury the body at sea? so that no DNA can be done ?

Personally I believe that he has been dead for a long time, Benazir Butto also had said so, and just kept as a bogey figure by the US for its own political ends. Some years ago they were showing pictures of bearded men that in no way even resembled Osama. I guess to the US eyes any dark man with a bear is an Osama look alike.

I thought he’d been declared dead years ago, entombed in some cave in Tora Bora?
Since there’s quite a few of his relatives around (His father sired 52 children, before he died! – of exhaustion?), then getting a DNA sample shouldn’t be too hard.
Seems his location in Pakistan was known about since last Augyst, hopefully a goodly chunk of intelligence has been obtained and has/is/will be put to good use!

  81. Lakawak says:

kuhnkat…the funny thing is, the picture IS a fake…but you are laughably wrong since that picture is VERIFIEDto be him. The fakery was that someone took a picture of him from video he made, and photoshopped the wounds on him. But it makes your “bone structure” comment pretty damn funny.

  82. the_Butcher says:

The image showing dead Osama Bin Laden is clearly fake, what’s up with that?

  83. Larry in Texas says:

Bin Laden always said the difference between him and us was that he loved death, while we loved life. He should enjoy death now. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. /sarc

I would have preferred to take his body under guard to Death Valley, California, to rot out in the open sun for Al Jazeera and all the Arab nations to see, just the way the terrorists in Iraq took some of the bodies of our military and our security contractors there and displayed them hanging. It would be a fitting thing to do, in all justice.

For Keith in Perth: Bin Laden would not have surrendered peacefully; he always announced his intention to die fighting, and it appears from the Daily Mail news piece that he did exactly that instead of surrender (although I will await further confirmation, because first media reports can be wrong). So I am not surprised, and it IS justice, because that is how war works with someone who declared war on us.

  84. Larry in Texas says:

One more thing: Wow! Great that you found the compound on Google Earth. I only wish it had been as easy for us to find Bin Laden as it was for you, Anthony, to locate his compound on Google Earth after media reports confirmed everything. But a good end, nonetheless.

  85. Holbrook says:

Osama was a dangerous man, albeit one who worked for the American backed Mujhadeen against the Russian’s in Afganistan but he clearly played some part in 9/11 and the smart money is he bankrolled it rather than planned it.
However the extent of the 9/11 attacks were so great that there had to be some internal help and a huge political and media cover up.
If there is a catastrophic breakdown of the US Air Defense system then people should have been held responsible…. they were not.
What is more the official version of how the towers collapsed and the damage at the Pentgon not corresponding with a hit from a 757 is as mystifying as the climate nonsense we ridicule on a daily basis.
I wonder what happens now?….do we all come home….PLEASE…..or is it a question of stirring up the hornets nest for an escallation of even more violence.

This is a case in which revenge is justice. Although I think that many of the actions by the US and its Allies in the “War on Terror” have been misguided I do not understand how anyone can regret the killing of Osama bin Laden, other than members of his family and his close friends.

Admittedly if I think about Osama bin Laden as a boy I feel a degree of sadness. He had many opportunities open to him as he came from a wealthy family. By the time he was an adult he was well educated and subsequent events show that he was talented and had considerable leadership skills. He could have used those qualities to serve his own people and mankind in general. Instead he chose a very evil path.

What is sad about Osama bin Laden is not his death but the fact that although he had the ability to do a lot of good he chose instead to cause misery to tens of thousands of people around the globe.

A second edition will probably tell the tale of how old bin Laden died years ago when he, in his old age (a terrorist year being, what, 10 to a peaceful human year) when he became an overly smarty pant after getting out from the american smart guns, his pride then, filled to bursting, he happily self detonated, much to the surprise of his number two, the terrorist turd, whom, incidentally, couldn’t tell anyone since nobody liked the crappy smell from him anyhow, and always made nasty fun of him (which gave him a psycho idea.)

Hidden in the attic, in the darkest corner under the most mysterious of nook and twisted crannies, there be old bin Laden, hold together in a silvery shine of somebody having gone apeshit with the duct tape, seated upon a poorly makeshift . . . swing, swinging for his crazed minion, smelly number two, as the first, and only, Zombie. Terrorist. Mother of all Kings.

During dark and rainy nights, (what, like two during the last ten years), if one had but an ear to the chimney, one could have heard the hissing prayer deep within, in that dark corner under that mysterious nook and twisted crannies: Yesss mother, my preciousss.

@hotrod: Great news he’s dead, the (civilized) world will be celebrating, but on your point about war, if you’re right why aren’t the prisoners treated according to the Geneva Convention.

The Geneva Conventions applies to combatants fighting under the flag of a sovereign nation that is a signatory to the convention. Obviously al-Qaida is neither a sovereign nor a signatory to the convention.

Moreover even if the above conditions are met individual combatants must meet some tests in order to be treated as protected prisoners of war. Among these tests are carrying arms openly and to be somehow distinguishable at a distance from non-combatants. In the usual sense this means they are uniformed combatants where the uniform serves to distinguish them from non-combatants at a distance.

Actually the Gulf War of 1991 had never ended. No treaty ending the war was ever signed. A cease-fire agreement ended the hostilities. The terms of the agreement were clearly violated with the United Nations issuing warning after warning and sanction after sancton for violations of the agreement. Thus the U.S. was not only still legally at war with Iraq in 2003 but also able to legally engage in hostile actions according to international law. I defy you to identify any other sovereign nation in the world which goes to such trouble and expense as the United States to limit civilian casualties in war through both limiting targets to those where there high confidence of military relevance and precision guided tactical weapons. Moreover I defy you to name another sovereign nation which goes to such expense in helping a defeated nation to rebuild and rejoin the international community.

I’m glad they didn’t give up. I think everyone one in America wished they were with that group that killed him. Imagine that.’

This statement says a lot about the American character.

One wonders what Americans would feel about Iraqis whose families were butchered to death vowing vengeance on America, or the Japanese vowing to build a nuclear bomb to wipe out two American Cities, had those nations showed the same vengeful outbursts in times gone by.

It’s a question civilised America must find an answer to and find one soon.

Because the millions of barbaric Americans have totally turned off the rest of the world with the way they see THEIR dead as outrageous but the deaths of any other nation as acceptable collateral damage.

You lost your moral leadership of the world after 9/11 and you show no signs of getting it back with statements like this.

I’m sure you Americans don’t care, but more and more people no longer care if Americans get killed as a result.

    but Keith consider :

Guilty – by his own admission – enough for a trial in absentia. Guilty of mass murder.

also – he was a self admitted terrorist AND he had ‘declared war’ on the west. (the fact a private citizen can not declare war; a prerogative reserved to States is a mote point). So he is also guilty of war crimes; and crimes against humanity.

So – if a state of war existed between AQ & the US/UK/Spain/ etc then he becomes a military target. I think a damned good case of ‘Hot Pursuit’ could be made – which means this action HAS the approval of the UN (Hot Pursuit being explicitly allowed by the UN where the nation state can not or will not take action). After all the man was still actively behaving as a military commander. So what crime would you have Interpol arraign him for ?

So the UN is (according to its articles) in agreement with the US action; the Pakistanis have demonstrated they are unable to deal with AQ; and no civil crimes have been committed. No UN involvement needed; no Interpol interest; and Pakistan could not deal with ‘unauthorised military action from their sovereign territory.

Terrorists should be treated like pirates; executed on sight – and if you publicly claim to be a terrorist then that admittance should be taken on face value and you should then suffer the consequences when you are located.

AQ and OBL refused to acknowledge the rule of (Western) civilized law; why do people constantly try to pretend we should deal with such people on other than their own terms ? He has been treated in EXACTLY the same way he would treat you or me. Unless you are Islamic you, as well as me, were his declared enemies; what is so hard to understand about their nihilistic philosophy; they have stated time after time – and acted to prove they mean what they say – that they believe in death BY ANY MEANS to their enemies. And their enemies are any one who is NOT Islamic; and quite a few who are Islamic.

I refuse to accept that someone who declares frequently that civilized laws do not apply to his actions has any right to be treated under the terms of the legal system/government/philosophy that they refuse to acknowledge. If OBL wanted a fair trail under Western style jurisprudence all he had to do was renounce his interpretation of Islamic Shari-ah Law. But I suspect there will be people who will say he has a ‘human right’ to hold his beliefs – which is more sacrosanct than the human right of everyone else to not be murdered by petty tyrants and ideologues.

Yes it may well be revenge; something OBL’s own philosophy APPROVES of and heartily endorses as correct action.

So the correct response to the screams of outrage that will shortly be orchestrated by the useful idiots and western hating fellow travellers ; is merely to point out that ‘he was done to as he demanded he had the right to do to others’

I am pleasantly surprised that Pres. Obama actually approved this action ! Well done the Yanks !

Well, this seems to have given plenty of posters an opportunity to air their political views this morning which only goes to show that climate skeptics are not a monolithic bunch of right-wing nutjobs! We have all kinds of people posting here and it makes for a fun read if nothing else.

I love a conspiracy theory as much as the next person, but as a skeptic I need to be consistent and subject all evidence to a realistic analysis.

Firstly, is he dead. Well, I am quite sure President Obama wanted to know that as well and a President as cautious as Mr Obama will have wanted a lot of assurances before going public. The body was removed from the scene to a US warship where I am sure plenty of tests were done, but DNA testing is unlikely to have been available in the time-frame even if such equipment is available on a US warship (a rush job would be about 12 hours these days considering the time for sample prep, PCR amplification and fragment analysis – anyone able to shed light on faster options would be appreciated).

Secondly – burial at sea. Well, I think this was actually quite smart. The US can say they respected his religion (making this a war on terror not religion) and it prevents any particular site being used a shrine. This is the biggest worry now – that extremist groups will use his “martyrdom” to incite more violence. This is a very legitimate concern, but I don’t think it would have been any better to have captured him alive (personal opinion) as there would be just as many extremists willing to commit terrorist acts to try and get him released and an execution would still have created a martyr.

Thirdly – involvement of Pakistan. Living next to a military college looks damming, however consider how he lived – completely secluded in a house with two cover families. Yes, of course there would have been questions over who lived in such a compound, but given his need to remain completely off the radar, it is unlikely that his real identity would have been given to anyone. I would hazard a guess that there are lots of compounds like this in Pakistan (never been there, but I have spent time in India and Bangladesh and this doesn’t sound unusual). I am sure (personal opinion) people in the Pakistan security services knew he was in Pakistan, but exactly where would not have been known because there was too much chance of a leak.

Pretty much all of the other statements (still alive, been dead for years etc.) are short of any kind of supporting evidence and can be attributed to people with a particular axe to grind and little downside to being proved wrong. Not trusting the government has become a default position these days (sadly, it is often the correct one), but in cases like this I doubt there being any way a cover up can work. Wikileaks or no, cover-ups get found out sooner or later and I think western governments have realized this.

Let’s all take a powder, take great pleasure (in the words of Mark Twain) that at least one person who inspired acts of indiscriminate killing is no more and move on.

It’s disturbing to see how many people believe the Osama legend. What gives?

The truth about Osama bin Laden is:
    • he was backed by the CIA since the 1980’s war against Afghanistan
    • CIA backing continued uninterrupted right up to the morning of September 11th
    • CIA kept a database of all the trainees @ Osama’s Afghanistan terrorist base – the database was called “The Base” or “Al Qaeda” for use as future provacateurs and patsies
    • Osama was in America under the name Tim Osman well before 9/11 aided by US intelligence assets
    • As US forces closed in on Osama’s cave network at the outset of the Afghanistan war special forces were held back by superiors while Osama escaped into Pakistan – those special forces soldiers were systematically “suicided” after returning home to the US
    • it’s very likely that Osama bin Laden died early 2002
    • every single video and audio message supposedly showing Osama or his voice have been proven forgeries
    • Osama did release an authentic message – in which he denied involvement in the attacks of Sept. 11th

More details @ infowars w/ links to sources:

{ “In February, 2004, Iranian state radio claimed Osama bin Laden had been captured in Pakistan’s border region with Afghanistan “a long time ago.” Pentagon and Pakistani officials denied the report. “Osama bin Laden has been arrested a long time ago, but Bush is intending to use it for propaganda maneuvering in the presidential election,” the radio report said.

Osama bin Laden died of kidney failure soon after the September 11, 2001, attacks. In 2002, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said bin Laden had kidney disease, and that he had required a dialysis machine when he lived in Afghanistan. That same year, the FBI’s top counterterrorism official, Dale Watson, said, “I personally think he is probably not with us anymore.”

A Taliban leader told the Pakistan Observer on December 21, 2002, that Bin Laden was suffering from a serious lung complication and died in mid-December, in the vicinity of the Tora Bora mountains. The source claimed that bin Laden was laid to rest honorably in his last abode and his grave was made as per his Wahabi belief, according to Fox News.

Alex Jones was told live on the radio in 2002 by high-level Council on Foreign Relations members that Osama Bin Laden had died of kidney failure in early 2002.
“I have it from high level [sources] from inside the Bush administration…that bin Laden died of natural causes and that his family has given the body to the CIA, that they’re gonna roll him out right before the election, that he’s on ice right now. They will claim they killed him right before the election,” Alex said at the time.
“Jones gave a caution that the intelligence could be disinformation but claimed that his base in Austin was extremely close to the Bush administration and similar information received in the past had been credible,” Paul Joseph Watson wrote in August of 2002.

During the 2004 election, CNN reported that Democratic insiders had been told that George W. Bush was going to use the Bin Laden body as an ace-in-the-hole if he thought he was in danger of losing the 2004 election. This confirmed the evidence that Jones had been given by the CFR and others.

    In 2003, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told Fox News Channel analyst Morton Kondracke she suspected Bush knew the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden and was waiting for the most politically expedient moment to announce his capture.” }

    RE: Fake photo

The photo referenced by crosspatch appears to me to be a skewed picture. The format shown looks to be 16:9 and if made into a 4:3, then the face is thinner and looks more like that of bin Laden.

As to whether this is a fake or not, I have no clue. However, I will reiterate that this photo has been stretched in the horizontal which happens on new flat screen TVs. Many places and people will not correct the horizontally stretched format as they think the screen must be completely filled in 16:9 and not shown in 4:3.

One interesting thing that was brought up by WSJ reporter Tom Wright:

Arch-terrorist and longtime Bin Laden crony Umar Patek was also captured in Abbottabad three months ago. Pakistan intelligence are saying they were led to the location of OBL after this arrest. We are saying we knew about it 8 months ago.

    http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/home/how-umar-pateks-road-came-to-an-end-in-pakistan/435584

  187. Cassandra King says:

I am sorry if this is repeating another posters concerns but the time line of events is a little worrying.

DNA tests take 5 to 7 days with a good source of physical material taken by a qualified person in clean conditions yet we have been informed that DNA tests confirm that the body supposedly taken yesterday proves with 99.9% certainty that it is the body of Bin Laden. The Seals would have had to go in, kill the mark, take the corpse back to Bagram hospital, get samples and perform a full autopsy and take pictures after cleaning up the corpse and then put it on a C130 for transit to a suitable area at sea in the space of a few hours.

Now it could be that the claim of DNA matches are just MSM inventions and it could be that facial recognition technologies may have been used but this raises an awkward question of the type of injury causing death as the MSM is reporting a wound(s) to the head, if this was the case then a fatal wound to the head would have caused facial distortion therefore making such ID methods unreliable, any pathologist or murder squad detective will confirm this.

A full autopsy takes many hours simply because the corpse has to be allowed to settle, it has to be cleaned and dissected and samples taken and logged with pictures taken and derivative notes collated. From the kill shot to the journey back to Bagram to the autopsy to the DNA sampling to the breaking of the news, it all must have happened within a few hours but from the very report it was made clear that a DNA analysis was undertaken and results confirmed.

We know the MSM gets excited and in the vacuum of real information tends to make it up but I am seeing a lot of so called news being touted as fact. Where are the pictures of the kind that were released after the death of Saddams boys?

Well, it easy to take blood and hair samples for DNA for later, but does one trust that idea?

I do think that burial as sea is rather fishy (pun intended). No question the argument is that returning Bin Laden to family etc does make for a possible shrine and terrorist magnet, but then again the return of body could have been used as a negotiating chip and dragged out for years to our advantage.

Really, burial at sea throws out any objective ability to verify this story. If Bin Laden where to surface up in a month, the Administration would simply state this was a ruse to flush him out.

I am most thrilled to assume this is Bin laden, but my skeptic meter is quite high on them tossing overboard the one major piece of evidence that would close this case once and for all.

A traditional and respectful burial at sea for this guy? Golly, not good, not good at all and this is one sour note in what should be a really great story. I am happy, but accident having the body fall off the ship on the way home, not good…

It would have been justice if the UN, Interpol or Pakistan had captured him, and then tried him and executed him.

The US going into another country and blowing people up is revenge “””””

You want to run that by us again ? Lemme see, they guy is living in the lap of luxury in Pakistan; and your recommendation is that Pakistan capture him; how would they know where to find him; most of the Pak military folks there are in a retirement home; they can’ be expected to run down the street and try to arrest somebody.

So now tell us about how the UN would go about executing him, after they try him. Try him for what ? Who was the last criminal to be executed by the United Nations. Oh I forgot, this guy declared war on the USA, so he wasn’t a criminal; just an enemy combatant.

They captured the Achile Lauro Terrorist, and the italians tried him and let him go. What about the Lockerbie bombers; they were “arrested” and tried, and let go.

We (the US), have soldiers dying trying to “arrest” these enemy combatant “criminals” after the lawyers have said it is ok to try and arrest them, and the they are let go; maybe the soldiers (our soldiers) are tried for not being nice when they tried to arrest these vermin.

No it is not revenge; revenge is getting even. You can’t get even with somebody who perpetrated the act of war against the USA on 9/11/2001.

I have been saying for ages, (not here at WUWT) that if they found this jerk, they should just kill him, and dump the body in the sea somewhere.

And if Osama, was not a prominent leader and representative spokesperson for the Moslem community; then why would anybody give a tinkers damn about treating his remains, as moslem culture demands. It seems like Obama is speaking out of both sides of his mouth (one for each teleprompter) when he says we are not at war with radical moslems. Well isn’t that the problem; they ARE at war with us; but we are treating them like Jaywalkers, to be ticketed and let back on the battlefield.

Give me a convincing reason for dumping the body overboard. “””””

Not possible; even remotely so, to bury him anywhere on land Smokey; that would become a holier place than Mecca. I have long thought that dumping him at sea was the only thing to do.

I’m sure some would have separated his body into multiple pieces; or burned it; maybe dragged it around Baghdad; like they did to our soldiers. But I’m not much into ghoulish behavior; and just dumping the corpse, in some unheralded spot in a deep ocean, suits me. I don’t care forensically if they have a body or not; it is enough for me that he is dead; whether that was years ago under GWB’s reign, or whether Obama achieved it; it matters not to me, one way or the other.

I’m, certainly not up to feeding these vermin for years, and then letting them go on some legal technicality.

A burial at sea flies in the face of the claim that everything was done to satisfy islamic law, unless a submersible placed the corpse in the required position facing Mecca, a simple dumping over the side could not have achieved the proper positioning. The body could have landed on the sea bed facing down in the wrong direction.

The claim that a tactical unit heavily engaged in a fire fight(Pakistani witnesses) and on the ground for forty minutes did not attract the attention of alert highly trained and heavily armed security police at one of the most heavily guarded military bases in Pakistan a mere few hundred yards away seems strange does it not? The terrorist threat to Pakistani bases means that security in and around those bases is highly alert and highly mobile, would they hear explosions and gunfire nearby and just shrug it off? The Pakistani military are not backward and have aggressive hunt and kill units ready and waiting for taliban attacks, the idea that a highly trained security force keyed up and waiting for taliban attacks would simply ignore a fire fight just stretches credibility too far.

Did the assault launch from Afghanistan and travel on to the sea and the waiting carrier? Did they refuel on route? Was a CAP involved or were there gunship escorts?

I am sorry if this is repeating another posters concerns but the time line of events is a little worrying.

DNA tests take 5 to 7 days with a good source of physical material taken by a qualified person in clean conditions yet we have been informed that DNA tests confirm that the body supposedly taken yesterday proves with 99.9% certainty that it is the body of Bin Laden.

It certainly doesn’t take that long, I’ve routinely done them using the FBI procedure in two days without any hurry. I would expect an expedited test would be done in less than 12 hours.

It is quite common (and sensible) to try to destroy totally a place or a person in order to ensure their death doesn’t permit then to carry on living as martyrs. Wherever Bin laden was buried would become a place of pilgrimage, so you remove that possibility by ensuring there is no burial place.

There was a similar situation with Hitlers final defeat in Berlin. The Chancellery was completely bulldozed in order to ensure it couldn’t be used as a place of pilgrimage and the body removed and its final destination was a mystery for many years.

    Smokey et al.
Going by news reports, in Islam it is highly important that the body be buried quickly, “the highest honor.” The US caught flak for embalming Saddam Hussein’s two sons. So preserving the body was obviously ruled out.

There is also the concept of seeking out someone, presumably a family member, to accept the body for burial. As stated, it was concluded that it would be difficult to locate a country willing to accept the remains, thus the quick sea burial was selected. Personally I think it is blatantly obvious that someone somewhere would have been willing to receive the remains if a public request had been made.

So as it was done, they can claim they stuck with the most important aspect, quick burial, while still denying OBL a future shrine.

BTW, for those questioning the DNA based on time for testing, note that the compound had been known about for at least days before the attack, likely under observation for weeks to months. News reports are saying the DNA match was positive. Personally I have yet to see official word as to when the DNA sample from OBL was taken, which easily could have been obtained from clothes he had worn, a table napkin, etc. Considering that this attack would be regarded as such a strong insult against Pakistani sovereignty, I’m certain the US must have been really certain OBL was living there before they proceeded.

Thus, to directly state it, as far as we know, or at least AFAIK, the DNA match could have been done prior to the attack, with the sample obtained by means the US government would prefer to not discuss.

I’m certain I’ll be corrected if this is not the case. ;-)

My mind is open on this news story. So can someone answer a few questions for me? Thanks:

Osama has been seen on video and heard on audio recordings sinece 2002. But every last one of those recordings has proved to be fradulent. bin Landen would have ignited a fire under his millions of adoring followere throughout the world, simply by appearing in person and exhorting them onward to jihad against the Great Satan. Yet he never appeared in any video or audio recordings; he ‘appeared’ in fuzzy videos and voice recordings that were later shown to be not Osama bin Laden – every one of them. Why did bin Laden never once appear incontrovertibly in public after 2002, in a setting that proved he was still alive?

With the criticism of Obama escalating by the day to intolerable levels over rising gas prices, stubborn unemployment, etc., the obvious question in this situation is: who benefits? The chattering classes have now been distracted. Cui bono?

The U.S. military has helicopters and ships with walk-in freezers. Why was the body buried at sea, instead of being transported to a U.S. Navy ship? After a forensic autopsy the body could have been buried at Guantanamo, or cremated. Why the rush to dipose of the body of “Osama”?

Where is the chain of custody for the purported DNA? How did the U.S. get bin Laden’s DNA in the first place? And how would we know it was bin Laden’s own DNA? Or did they just compare a close relative’s DNA, and make an assumption for public consumption?

A long firefight occurred within walking distance of a Pakistani military installation, but aroused no suspicion, and brought no response. Why is that?

Skeptics are supposed to ask questions like these, and not just credulously swallow the official story line. Now there is no body, they promptly got rid of it before uncomfortable questions were asked. Now there is only the Administration’s claims made for public consumption, breathlessly repeated by Obama’s pet media. We know that lies routinely flow from of Obama’s mouth like water from a fire hose, and that this event takes a tremendous amount of political pressure off of him. The whole story stinks to high heaven.

First, OBL is a very high profile figure. If this report were false and he is alive, a quick video equals a huge amount of egg on US face. If he was already dead, then you are saying that elite teams and their military support would have to agree to lie for the POTUS so he can fix his poll numbers and work towards reelction. Given the special ops team, and on ship forensics team on the USS Carl Vinson had access to essentially unlimited quantities of blood and tissue samples, and it is well known that they have pre-gathered DNA information for identification from the Bin Laden relatives. It is entirely reasonable that with the combined value of facial recognition, finger printing, ear shape verification, and all the other biometric information such as height weight and augmenting that with a quick screen of a large DNA sample they could provide very high confidence that it was in fact Osama.

Not to mention the verbal statement by his wife regarding his identity.

And as for “a beacon for human rights” spells better as “a bacon for human rights” as in they the western world, where the US sadly took the lead in par with limey town, fried the human rights to blisters.

Thanks for the info Phil, I am trying to work out a time line from the bullets in the head to the shipping back to Bagram hospital, the only place in the region secure enough and with the facilities to process to the DNA sample being taken to it being tested and shown to be positive to the corpse being loaded onto a suitable navy aircraft to be shipped out to the aircraft carrier. Of course that is if it happened in that sequence, it could have gone down a different way with the seals setting out from Bagram and then going straight for the sea post op.

From the bullet in the head it would be, lets say for the sake of argument 8hrs from the kill shot to the corpse being presented on a slab for the tests and two hours on the slab then 12hrs for the DNA analysis, although I have never heard of such speed with a DNA test, then an 8hr transit to disposal location and the religious rites. Thats at least 20 + hrs post kill, but when did the MSM get fed the line that the DNA tests were 99.9% positive? As far as I can see, the time line between kill shot and statement and certification of death in front of the MSM by the POTUS do not seem to match.

All I would like is a look at the pictures of the action and the corpse and the time lines and the routes in and out of the area. BTW FWIW IMHO just who were those outside the whitehouse with Obama posters chanting four more years?

Could the DNA tests have been done on a ship? Carriers apparently have quite sophisticated hospital facilities and would be secure. That would cut a lot of transport time from the time line.

And I really would like to know just what information of any value would come from an autopsy. I think a photo of a really big hole in the head is about all the evidence needed.

    Troll –

While I know exactly where you are trying to come from, you still miss the mark. Yes, we are subject to the whims of misguided bureaucrats since we are a nation of humans, and therefore flawed. Are we always right? Not hardly. I would, however, like to see a list of the places that face the same melting pot-problems that we face and do so well, ie, without any real atrocities. You speak in very general terms of things we have done without revealing what has happened as a result of those things. We root out the wrongdoers where ever we can – ask Ollie North how gallivanting in Central America went for him. If you are going to put list together to compare and contrast how we respond to right’s violations, I invite your efforts in that debate. We invade but rebuild, spend a fortune on smart weapons to minimalize civilian casualties, put nuclear carriers worth a fortune in harms way by helping victims of natural disasters (and a carrier close to shore back-feeding power to a port makes it very vulnerable), all the while showing women, immigrants and even Muslims working together in our integrated Armed Forces (and all volunteer, btw)… Where else in the world do you see that? Like it or not, we are still a beacon for the rest of the world that yearns for individual freedoms, despite efforts like yours to besmirch us. Sure, I will freely admit we don’t always get it right, but we try harder than most other countries.

Make sure you point out where we execute thousands or enslave them, or even where we maim or disfigure those we don’t agree with. Be sure to include all the oil we stole from Iraq since that war was just for oil (like Libya is not /sarc). I am sure you will jump to civilian casualties and other side effects of war, mostly because that’s all you have. The fact remains immigration is still going strong here because at least here you can get a fair shake if you keep your nose clean.

Overall, I’ll take all of our problems over the rest of the worlds “perfections” any day.

Egad! I am astonished to encounter gullible conspiracy-mongers on WUWT—even Smokey? AFAIK the various video and audio tapes that OBL released over the past decade all passed CIA muster for authenticity, so there is little question he was still alive.

The idea that this raid was staged for Obambi’s poll numbers is fanciful at best.

What I find interesting is how OBL managed to get dialysis without being discovered. He would have had to have a unit and doctor and/or technician on staff in the compound. It does seem likely that the Islamist elements in the ISI were aware of his presence, and turned a blind eye. But I think that’s as far as we need to go toward conspiracies.

The rational folk among us will want to pay attention to what DSW, Dave Springer, and Hotrod have to say, and ignore the craziness from the likes of ‘ecliptic’.

    /Mr Lynn

  254. Rob Potter says:

    Thanks Larry (Hotrod- 1.26pm),

I figured there might be other technology on the cards to shorten a simple DNA match. It was stated that the match was to DNA from a sister who had died previously so they would have been able to identify a set of genetic markers to use. A sibling would have 1/4 of the alleles in common, so they probably looked at a panel of 50 or so. Since DARPA seems to have been developing rapid ID for just such a purpose, I can see that they could have the result before dumping the body. Micro-fluidics (“PCR machines on a chip) were being discussed a good 10 years ago so a working model for a specific target is an option.

    Cassandra,

There would have been no need for any kind of autopsy – simple identification is enough and a blood sample is plenty for a DNA analysis. Skepticism is good – I am glad we are asking questions, but in this case I think we can put a bit of trust in the official pronouncements – Obama is not going to come out in a special press conference if they didn’t had very very solid evidence.

Does that answer your question?

PS And as a bonus I’d throw in [trimmed Robt]

  256. @DSW:

Mad speculation is making conclusions without presenting a sufficient evidence.

Governments routinely get away with much taller orders than lying about a single covert CIA operation. Would the today’s OBL story stand in the court of law? Of course not. You need more evidence to prove a theft of a lighter from a gas station stand than we were given so far. Hopefully they will come up with more.

Hundreds of millions of people in totalitarian countries believed (and still believe in some places) in totally falsified versions of the whole human history, leave alone individual incidents. Billions of people passionately believe in ancient fairy tales that have nothing in common with the objective reality. Hundreds of billions of dollars are being taken from taxpayers under the pretext of theories based on manipulated data and unfounded conclusions. And you are telling me that Obama would blush lying about Osama?

I repeat, it is very possible that they got Osama today. Maybe. But there are other possibilities, and there is a lot of unanswered questions. Calling people “mad speculators” just because they don’t yelp “How high?” every time the so called “authority” tells you to jump is… ungentlemanly, to put it very mildly.

First of all Alex, we are not in a court of law. Those exist for citizens, not foreign enemies, so whether or not it would stand up in court in moot at best. The government has no obligation to tell us anything about this operation, so be glad we know any of it. Speaking of knowing, that is the one thing to which only a handful of people actually are privy, so any speculation on the part of anyone (ie, you and me) that isn’t in that exclusive club pretty much qualifies as “mad speculation”; and yes, as much as I do not like the man, Obama would be a world-caliber fool for lying about this. Your bit about my “ungentlemanlyness”, while amusing, needs more of a point. It assumes the given that I (or you for that matter) jump when told to by authority. Since you don’t know me, I can see where you hoped this ad hominem would strike home; however, I stand by the “mad speculation” observation since proof in this discussion will always be MIA and Obama is making a statement that can be easily disproven. Perhaps you don’t know people in the Intel community, but if the POTUS were straight up lying about it, it would get out. Your assertion also assumes that Navy SEALs are willing to besmirch their honor by lying about getting the number one most wanted man in the world. Now, speaking possibilities, there is a chance that is true – by the probability is tiny. Occum’s Razor aside, I will have to assume that you are not a poker player – but if a general sweep of the phrase “mad speculation” cuts you so deeply, I would suggest holding your cards closer to your vest and don’t let people know you can be so easily offended.

Absolutely, the apparatus necessary is approximately the size of a microwave oven. Since they knew that this would be needed they would set up for the PCR and a sequencer on the Vincennes with a lab tech., the PCR would take a couple of hours only. Typically the FBI test uses 13 alleles.

Smokey, it appears that you are not aware of the burial customs of moslems; which apparently require “burial” within 24 hours of death, and apparnetly all in one piece; which evidently is the reason for one of the favorite behaviors that moslems have of beheading their enemies after killing them; or preferrably in the course of killing them. You might have noticed that the people of Baghdad quickly beheaded even the statues of Saddam Hussein following his capture; as an expression of their sentiments towards him.
Apparently one cannot enjoy the fruits of one’s martydom, if the body is dismembered so it can’t be buried in one piece. I suspect cremation is a no-no.

i’m somewhat civilized to I would resist the temptation to hack him into little pieces (as they treated Daniel Pearl), and then distribute th pieces widely around in remote desert areas for the jackals, and Griffon vultures to feast on. But like I said, I am somewhat too civiized to actually do that.

Dumping the carcass in the ocean was certainly too good for him; but the sanest thing to do.

Bringing him to “trial” is for people who simply don’t deserve to survive their own stupidity. In the USA (specially California) we have do-gooder judges and Governors commuting the sentences of murderers, who were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. No such assurance can be given to the victims of those people. Poor police work should never be a cause for improperly convicting someone who is actually innocent of the crime charged.

This was almost certainly done with Pakistani permission. Pakistan is a nuclear power with air defense systems commensurate with that status. An unauthorized US helicopter near a major city over 500 miles inland would have lit up their air defense systems on the way in and on the way out. Not even the United States could pull that off. To do something like that requires stealth fighters going in first and taking out ground defense radars.

The $64,000 question is what Obama had to secretly give to Pakistan to get their permission. He wouldn’t dare risk a helicopter full of Navy Seals getting shot down over Pakistan and there’s just no possible way to pull it off without significant risk of that unless Pakistan knew about it ahead of time and stood down while it happened.

The plain fact is there has never been any real evidence connecting OBL to the 9/11 attacks, that is the simply truth. OBL should have been captured and brought to trial not extra-judicially murdered on some country’s president’s say-so. Everyone should re-read OBL’s perceptive and humane response to the attacks. Usually terrorists claim responsibility for their attacks so that the reasons are clear, no-one ever claimed responsibility (except those Gitmo torturees, but torture admissions are not believable).

That is the end of “rule of law”, and the start of “rule of men”. It is the start of the Dark Ages and everyone “celebrating” the “justice” have fallen into the muck and mire of base human emotion. You can never have too much information and a full detailed autopsy provides a world of data of the subjects long term health, recent medical/dental treatment. Hair analysis can determine long term residence in what area, drugs ingested. A wealth of data to be harvested.

I want to believe, I am ready to believe, nothing would please me more to believe that Binbag is dead. I jumped up and down with glee and sheer happiness remembering 9/11 and my copious tears and helpless rage. HOWEVER!

I want to know certain facts for my own peace of mind:

The op start time and location, the transit time to destination, the arrival time, the kill shot time, the extraction time, the first destination of the corpse and the time it arrived for examination, what tests were carried out and the time of burial. From take off of the kill team to the dumping of OBL into the water, how long? How/when/where? I want to see pictures of the fire fight and pictures of the corpses, I want to know how many guards were killed and how many escaped/released/detained alive.

The MSM are reporting that 100 special forces took part in the raid carried by just four helicopters and one of those shot down/suffered technical failure, so three came out with 100 on board plus crew? So where are we right now in terms of concrete evidence? If a post kill search was done and with a whole 40mins on the ground it suggests there was then why was there a passport left on the floor of the bedroom below what looked like a syringe and a shelf full of meds left behind? I want to know all the facts so I can pop that champagne and toast success and mission accomplished and just because I want that evidence, clear and concise and detailed evidence it doesnt mean I am some whacko tin foil hat wearing loony conspiracy theorist.

There is far too much MSM invention and poor investigative skills, too many copy and paste hacks printing too much trash, I just want cold hard facts please and plenty of them. I keep hearing that the body was dumped quickly in accordance with islamic law but why him and not others then? I hear that pictures are not released because it might upset his followers or others but millions of islamists see muslim corpses on the TV every day, death is a constant on the muslim media. There are some who would be upset but so what? Does anyone out there give a hoot that some islamists might be upset at seeing OBLs dead body? Is the most powerful nation on earth frightened that if they keep OBLs corpse for a little longer than islamic law dictates there will be riots and the storming of embassies around the world? Hundreds of millions around the world want OBLs corpse strung up by the ankle and left to rot. The people who matter do not give two hoots about how OBLs body is handled. Those who are upset at his death are going to be upset anyway so why pander to them by going through some hand wringing cringing routine about islamic burial custom?

I want to believe and I want to trust that he is dead, I am eagerly waiting a full account of the action so I can have some kind of closure to erase the constantly playing loop of the events of 9/11 in my mind, we need closure, all of us need all the facts so we can move on.

Interesting links. Thanks. But as for your obvious irritation with the sheeple (when it comes to this subject): C’mon, have a heart! As a non-American it is abundantly clear to me why healthy sceptics on AGW turn to mush when it comes to terrorism. It is the Patriotism Factor. Just think of all the innocent civilians and young boys who died. This is in the back of minds when the subject changes, and to them it feels almost like sacrilege to question the heroic actions of the seals (would they lie? Oh no!)(oh come on people, get real! They will do what they are told..) and the government. While the story may be true, the questions are legion. I, for one, being unburdened by American Patriotism, will keep an open mind. In that, ecliptic, I am with you. Well done.

    Second week of bombing begins;
Media visits village hit by missile

    By Andrew Buncombe in Washington

    Monday, 15 October 2001

After a week of debilitating strikes at targets across Afghanistan, the Taliban repeated an offer to hand over Osama bin Laden, only to be rejected by President Bush.

The offer yesterday from Haji Abdul Kabir, the Taliban’s deputy prime minister, to surrender Mr bin Laden if America would halt its bombing and provide evidence against the Saudi-born dissident was not new but it suggested the Taliban are increasingly weary of the air strikes, which have crippled much of their military and communications assets.

The move came as the Taliban granted foreign journalists unprecedented access to the interior for the first time. Reporters were escorted to the village of Karam in southern Afghanistan, where the Taliban said up to 200 civilians were killed in an American bombardment last Wednesday.

The reporters saw clear evidence that many civilians had been killed in the attack, though they could not confirm the number of deaths. “I ask America not to kill us,” pleaded Hussain Khan, who said he had lost four children in the raid. In the rubble of one house, the remains of an arm stuck out from beneath a pile of bricks. A leg had been uncovered near by.

Another old man said: “We are poor people, don’t hit us. We have nothing to do with Osama bin Laden. We are innocent people.” Washington has not commented on the bombardment………………………………..

Well done brave and well trained men, for many years men such as these have extracted kidnapped women and children from behind the iron curtain that surrounds Islamic countries. I hope this team from this point on is reinforced and does similar work on the list that had Osama as #1. Two or three of these occurrences in different countries per year would see a profound change in attitude to the people sprouting holy war. On a lighter note, my take on the 72 virgins awaiting this person, using the experience of a long life and logic, would tend to make me believe that it is a hell worse than fire. If they are perpetual virgins he is frustrated forever, if they are deflowered it will take 72 nights. Then he has the rest of eternity dealing with 72 non virgins all demanding something, that has got to be a worse torture than dealing with the devil.

He died not only a mass murderer but a simpering coward, hiding behind and endangering the life of a woman – his own wife, in fact. His death was too easy, and his burial at sea far too dignified for the human scum that he was.

Never going to happen! That level of detail would divulge methods and simply serve as a training manual for the the terrorists and compromise future missions. Even without that info, the locals will be able to reconstruct far too much of the mission profile based on snippets of information like when the helicopters passed over someones house. We do not need to make the espionage efforts of the terrorists any easier by giving them the complete mission profile on a platter.

Not sure where you heard the MSM reporting 100 participants, the numbers I heard reported were a total of 40 seals only 24 of which made the insertion into the compound, leaving 16 on the hovering helicopters providing backup teams and flight crew. The air assets were supposedly 2 CH-47 chinooks and 2 UH-60 black hawks (one of which was lost on the ground after the hard landing). Since a single chinook can carry 33-44 fully equipped troops, and a blackhawk can carry 11 fully equipped troops, that makes the total extraction capacity of the remaining helicopters, far exceeds the needs of the 24 person insertion team, and lots of room for them to carry out intelligence materials harvested from the compound.

The media and official reports I have seen, also state that the entry team that took down Bin Laden did it near the end of the 40 minute time on the ground, which would give them only minutes to gather up his body and get out of the compound with all the intelligence materials they gathered. Since it takes some time to methodically work your way through an unknown compound and clear rooms and make entry into various levels of a 3 story structure I see absolutely no conflict between the times stated and reasonable assumptions about how long it would take for the insertion teams to work their way up to the occupied upper floors and take down not only Obama but the two couriers who presumably were trying to defend the compound and Bin Laden.

Actually joking aside you make a very good point, he does not deserve to be treated according to a religion he did not follow, hundreds of thousands of murdered muslims can testify to that. He is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths most of them muslim women and children, old and young. He really truly does not deserve any respect whatsoever, he allowed his victims none whatsoever. The time for hand wringing appeasement is over, the time for wishy washy fear filled moral relativism is over.

Make it fully known to all followers of the death cult using islam as cover that their corpse will if found will be treated with the contempt they showed their victims, no 72 virgins, no meeting Allah in the muslim heaven, this is the price they pay, the ultimate price. Making a concrete promise that all islamofascist mass murderers that their corpse will be so treated that entry to hell will be the only destination.

A death cult like islamofascism can only be combated in this way, they dream of entry to heaven, deny them this goal and many would begin to realise that the price for their killing spree is simply not worth it. If just half can be convinced that their remains will be treated in a way that guarantees their soul is sent to hell it would save many lives.

They say that you should never wrestle with pigs in the sty, you both get dirty but the pig loves it. Time to really get serious and push their buttons, time for real rough eye for an eye justice, time to let the killers know there will be no heaven at the end. We know that many failed suicide bombers actually believed they would enter heaven, take that belief away and fewer would take the risk.

We have hundreds of books detailing special forces methods, books on the SAS/SEALs/Delta etc so I dont think a detailed time line would give our enemies any intel they could not gather from elsewhere. BTW IMHO there is too much reliance on belief and hard evidence based fact is getting harder and harder to come by, everywhere you look in the MSM you can feel it like a rising tide of black sludge. Rather than a given, Trust has become a rarity. In the place of Trust we have a chronic suspiciousness, verging on becoming a national paranoia.

Probably true, if viewed in isolation, but the one element you are missing is that if the exact details are officially confirmed, you remove uncertainty about methods. That uncertainty is essential to ensure that there always remains doubt about the validity of their information about what “probably” happened.

There is a reason they often use the phrase “I can neither confirm or deny”. If you do either one, you are in fact giving out information. If you deny an event happened you are still giving valuable information.

Like Thomas Edison and his experiments regarding light bulb filaments. He learned lots of things that “did not work”, those experiments were not failures they just confirmed a negative outcome.

That is why the military will never explicitly confirm the presence of nuclear weapons or specifically deny their presence. Part of information security is preserving uncertainty about details the other side believes are correct. Each uncertain detail is one more possible error that must be accounted for in their planning. The more certain the information, the fewer situations the bad guys must plan and prepare for.

I take it you never took a structural engineering course in your life? I studied Architecture in college extensively. First of all the fire just has to get hot enough to weaken the steel’s load bearing ability not “melt” it,

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that people don’t know that steel gets softer as it gets hotter. But you’d think most people have seen a blacksmith at least in a movie heating up steel so it’s malleable on an anvil using a BFH (big effing hammer). I use a torch to bend steel rebar on occasion. It gets pretty easy to bend before it starts to glow. I basically control the radius of the bend by how hot I let it get. By the time it’s glowing it’ll just fold over on itself with zero radius like a wet noodle.
