Al Gore apparently has no command of the most basic details of anything related to Earth and climate. His last idiotic gaff in the media was that the temperature of the Earth 2 kilometers or so down was millions of degrees! Apparently, Slate editors who look equally like dufuses for printing this dreck didn’t notice his latest one either. Maybe all those trips around the world in the private jet have damaged his ability to tell the time and date? Too many trip across the International Dateline perhaps?
Here’s an interview question put to him from Slate:
Q: How damaging to your argument was the disclosure of e-mails from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University?
A: To paraphrase Shakespeare, it’s sound and fury signifying nothing. I haven’t read all the e-mails, but the most recent one is more than 10 years old. These private exchanges between these scientists do not in any way cause any question about the scientific consensus. But the noise machine built by the climate deniers often seizes on what they can blow out of proportion, so they’ve thought this is a bigger deal than it is.
But wait there’s more…
Q: There is a sense in these e-mails, though, that data was hidden and hoarded, which is the opposite of the case you make [in your book] about having an open and fair debate.
A: I think it’s been taken wildly out of context. The discussion you’re referring to was about two papers that two of these scientists felt shouldn’t be accepted as part of the IPCC report. Both of them, in fact, were included, referenced, and discussed. So an e-mail exchange more than 10 years ago including somebody’s opinion that a particular study isn’t any good is one thing, but the fact that the study ended up being included and discussed anyway is a more powerful comment on what the result of the scientific process really is.
These people are examining what they can or should do to deal with the P.R. dimensions of this, but where the scientific consensus is concerned, it’s completely unchanged. What we’re seeing is a set of changes worldwide that just make this discussion over 10-year-old e-mails kind of silly.

Oh wait, I’ve just done a little math. He says the last email is 10 years old, but it is from Nov. 12. That is about 25 and a bit days ago. So he is out by a factor of:
(365 * 10) / 25 = 146
Later he says the northern ice cap has been the same size for 3 million years. Well it happens many of us were under a couple of miles of northern ice cap ice about 20,000 years ago. So there he is out by a factor of
3,000,000 / 20,000 = 150
So it seems that Al Gore isn’t lying or even wrong, he’s just quite slow. In fact his internal clock must be running about 150 times slower than normal.
Hmm, that may explain why his many predictions are so far off as well.

Just tonight on CBS we heard Katie Couric stating that this last decade was the warmest on record. It doesn’t matter that the record is false if 51% of the voters believe it.
Until we can get the public to recognize Gore for what he is, he’ll continue to get his picture on the cover of Time Magazine, instead of Mad Magazine, where it belongs.

Down in Oz, Australian of the year, Tim Flannery, Climate Alarmist No.1 did this calculation in an article in a leading Alarmist newspaper (The Melbourne Age). Flannery claims to be a scientist. Of what, I don’t know.

An economist, Terry McCrannt pointed out that its actually (based on Flannery’s figures) a 33% increase. He went on to say that if Flannery can’t undertake that basic calculation why should we believe anything he says.

Now for the interesting bit. McCrannt received dozens of emails pointing out another dishonest part of Flannery’s calculation. Why didn’t he use the Kelvin scale? (I know this because I wrote to McCrannt and he replied to me)
In that case the numbers are (roughly) 288K in 1900 and 293K now. That leads to 5/288 = 1.7%
I noticed two things (apart from Flannery’s rubbery figures)
1. His supporters immediately rallied to his defence and went on to rail against these evil, extermist deniers. How could they question the Australian of the year regardless of the fact that he can’t do a basic calculation.
2. Nobody cared about the fundemental issue about the Kelvin scale.
But…. here is the kicker in my mind (as well as a whole lot of other people)
According to the Warmers, variability in Solar output is only 0.1%
Temperature increase over the past 100 years is around 0.5K (shoot me if I’m wrong… It’s a rough estimate)
-> 0.5K/288K = 0.18%
Clearly orders of magnitude greater than the Solar variation!… Oh…hang on!?!
I understand that this is a super rough model but perhaps this could be explored by somebody who has a better understanding of thermodynamics than I do. (Maybe it already has been).
P.S. if I’ve messed up a calculation I will never claim to be Australian of the year and I would welcome anybody setting me straight.

1. The Mayan Armageddon of 2012 is not going to happen. We’re good on that one. Won’t we all breathe a sigh of relief!

Unfortunately, while the Mayans forecast didn’t come true, apparently the center of the earth in 2019 has attained several million degrees… so it’s getting a bit toasty around those geothermal generation plants. 3. Al is running his house on that free energy that the oil companies bought the patents to, and hid. Which means that in the next ten years we can generate electricity in our basements, apparently out of wishful thinking and maybe cat poop. The poem reads like it has been written by a computer – a series of words chosen randomly then parsed for rhyme and rythm. I assume the critic knew who the poet was before making his comments.
There was once a case where someone trained a monkey to paint. The result was a kind of abstract art in the extreme, which elicited exuberant praise from the art critics. Using their highly trained artiistic knowledge they were able to tell the audience how skillfully the artist used light, colour and form to bring a deeper understanding to the subject matter in hand.

The Real issue here is not what Al Gore remembers or what those emails contain ( i think they have been quoted way out of context). we have to analyze whether climate change is real and even more than that whether renewable energy and efficient use of energy is the way forward. i personally think that it is the way forward. i also think that if oil was still continuing its upward climb like last year most people would have been taking renewable energy far more seriously. And in today’s newspaper there is an article titled “UN Data Back Record Warmth.” The final paragraph of the article reads: “The past few decades are the warmest period in at least 400 years and probably 1,000 years, based on evidence from tree rings, retreating glaciers and other scientific methods to track climate before record-keeping, according to a 2006 report by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.”
The AGW crowd is fighting tooth and nail to drive back the forces of truth. And they must be fervently hoping and praying that no one is paying attention to the details.

The Real issue here is not what Al Gore remembers or what those emails contain ( i think they have been quoted way out of context). we have to analyze whether climate change is real and even more than that whether renewable energy and efficient use of energy is the way forward. i personally think that it is the way forward. i also think that if oil was still continuing its upward climb like last year most people would have been taking renewable energy far more seriously.
Climate change is as real as the sunrise. Climate change started as soon as the earth had a climate. Sorry, that’s not the right question — it’s a dumb question.
The future requires more energy. Renewable energy will be part of that mix. The time to implement renewable energy is when it become economically viable and not before. As those technologies mature they will naturally be put to wider use.
There is no need to mandate the use of more renewables and certainly no need to force out existing, practical energy sources in favor of expensive and still experimental energy sources just because you believe they are better.
Somebody truly needs to get on the stick and manufacture Al Gore Warming Shovels and Global Warming Blowers. This is a business opportunity that should not be missed. I think some Al Gore Warming hats and gloves would be good for Oregon too since we are having windchill factors in the minus 30 range. Minus 30 folks! That’s frostbite in 15 minutes or less!

Climate change science is in a period of ‘negative discovery’ – the more we learn about this exceptionally complex and rapidly evolving field the more we realize how little we know. Truly, the science is NOT settled.
Therefore, there is no sound reason to impose expensive and restrictive public policy decisions on the peoples of the Earth without first providing convincing evidence that human activities are causing dangerous climate change beyond that resulting from natural causes. Before any precipitate action is taken, we must have solid observational data demonstrating that recent changes in climate differ substantially from changes observed in the past and are well in excess of normal variations caused by solar cycles, ocean currents, changes in the Earth’s orbital parameters and other natural phenomena.
We the undersigned, being qualified in climate-related scientific disciplines, challenge the UNFCCC and supporters of the United Nations Climate Change Conference to produce convincing OBSERVATIONAL EVIDENCE for their claims of dangerous human-caused global warming and other changes in climate. Projections of possible future scenarios from unproven computer models of climate are not acceptable substitutes for real world data obtained through unbiased and rigorous scientific investigation.
Specifically, we challenge supporters of the hypothesis of dangerous human-caused climate change to demonstrate that:
1.Variations in global climate in the last hundred years are significantly outside the natural range experienced in previous centuries;
2.Humanity’s emissions of carbon dioxide and other ‘greenhouse gases’ (GHG) are having a dangerous impact on global climate;
3.Computer-based models can meaningfully replicate the impact of all of the natural factors that may significantly influence climate;

8.Polar bears and other Arctic and Antarctic wildlife are unable to adapt to anticipated local climate change effects, independent of the causes of those changes;
9.Hurricanes, other tropical cyclones and associated extreme weather events are increasing in severity and frequency;
10.Data recorded by ground-based stations are a reliable indicator of surface temperature trends.
It is not the responsibility of ‘climate realist’ scientists to prove that dangerous human-caused climate change is not happening. Rather, it is those who propose that it is, and promote the allocation of massive investments to solve the supposed ‘problem’, who have the obligation to convincingly demonstrate that recent climate change is not of mostly natural origin and, if we do nothing, catastrophic change will ensue. To date, this they have utterly failed to do so.

This was a fair comment. One problem with the way forward that you speak of is extremely high prices of fossil fuels. This is because the so called “renewables” are very expensive, and this necessitates artificially high prices on existing fuels to make these new fuels competitive. Fossil fuels are a finite resource. Yet, we have already located 1000 Gigatons of coal around the world, most of it in the USA. We have estimates of oil shale as high as 5 Trillion equivalent gallons of oil. Vast reserves of Natural Gas have been discovered in Alaska. Instead of chasing an expensive fantasy, we could simply continue to locate reserves, and while using them, plan for a future of nuclear energy, Biofuels, etc. There is no rationale for cutting our own throats to evade use of natural resources. The earth is not a religious shrine, the polar bears are ok (had one for lunch) and C02 (at a concentration of 4 molecules in every 10 THOUSAND) is a vital beneficial component of our atmosphere.
Look out Senator Boxer, your heir apparent has been identified.

One of the best parts of the interview comes at the end. When it is suggested that one is being hypocritical if one is against war in the Middle East but still drives an SUV, Gore includes in his reply:
I drive a hybrid and we’ve changed our light bulbs and windows and installed solar panels and geothermal ground source heat pumps and most everything else.
The interviewer, naturally, completely fails to call him out on the extreme irony of this statement. I’m sure Gore owns a hybrid (after all, is son was caught driving one at aver 100 MPH), but his documented energy use is many, many multiples that of the average American, and thousands of times that which he is advocating we be forced to live with.
I’m sure Gore drives his Hybrid to all his book signings, and when he travels between his different homes, and going to Copenhagen he probably hopped a ride aboard a cargo freighter headed to Europe so as to avoid air travel. And gosh, his 10,000 square feet of mansion for two is sure efficient.

I overlapped Al as a student at Harvard College during 1967-1969 (but never met him). During the 2000 Presidential campaign, I remember being underwhelmed by his academic record. His SAT aptitude scores were mediocre by Harvard standards, his achievement test scores in the sciences were abysmal, and his grades at Harvard were terrible. He did not take a single serious science or mathematics course as an undergraduate.
The last reliable email is ten years old. Since that time the emails contain a non-temperature correlated response and can therefore simply be ignored!

Since the EPA declared greenhouse gases to be poisonous… the last few days anytime someone is close to me I have been saying “WOH stop exhaling on me, that is poisonous you know?”.. I guess what kills me is that by using the data at the NCDC it shows what skeptics have been saying all along. Go to the link below and put in 1895 (the farthest dates that temp history is available) to 2009 and you will see a 0.12 degrees C rise in temperatures for the U.S. Plug in 1980-2009 and you will see a rise of 0.44 degrees C. But plug in 1997-2009 and you will see a 0.29 degree C drop. There is a warning at the top of the page indicating that this data hasn’t been “quality controlled”. I guess that means they haven’t applied any of Mike Mann’s “tricks” to “hide the decline”?

I have a Ph.D in geophysics. I studied at the University of Utah with David Chapman. Chapman in turn studied under Henry Pollack, another thermal geophysicist, at the University of Michigan. Ironically, Pollack is now one of Gore’s advisors.
I have published dozens of papers in the peer-reviewed scientific literature on thermal geophysics.
As pointed out here, Gore’s statement is ridiculously, hopelessly, wrong. The temperature of rocks in geothermal fields is typically in the hundreds of deg C. The near-surface melting temperature of rock is in the neighborhood of 1000 C.
Gore is wrong by at least a factor of a thousand, or one-hundred-thousand percent.
This man, a politician and lawyer, is now advising the world on the science of climate and the technical field of energy?

I’m a Celsius kinda guy, but I think 0 Degrees F is the freezing point of ethyl-alcohol (ethanol) which is what was used in the original thermometers ???. 100F is body temperature. (I promise I didn’t look that up).
But I am thinking of changing my thermometer to the Rod/Stone/Fortnight model as poposed by George Smith. So now I suppose we’ve got (33 – 19)/33 = 42% cooler… Problem solved. Thankyou George.

First of all, anyone who believes that there is NO credible scientists who disagree on man made global warming is ignorant on the subject, How about Prof. Mojib Latif of Germany’s Leibniz Institute?
Latif is one of the leading climate modellers in the world. He is the recipient of several international climate-study prizes and a lead author for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He has contributed significantly to the IPCC’s last two five-year reports that have stated unequivocally that man-made greenhouse emissions are causing the planet to warm dangerously.
Yet recently in Geneva, at the UN’s World Climate Conference–an annual gathering of the so-called “scientific consensus” on man-made climate change –Latif conceded the Earth has not warmed for nearly a decade and that we are likely entering “one or even two decades during which temperatures cool.” and nobody predicts a reduction in Carbon in the next few decades and we darn well know that there was none in the last decade.

2nd, all those sopposedly sophisticated computer models that predicted continued and never ending temp increases (which included the last 8 years) were wrong, temps have not gone up over the last 8 years and you want us all to belive these non credible computer models produced by scientists who have been proven to enter whatever data it takes to get the results out of them that they want? I think not.

In addition to “Can’t tell time”, the Reverend Al Gore can’t read a thermometer. Recently he claimed on TV that the earth is a miilion degrees at its core. (lol, spoken like a true science flunky, if that were true the earth would be a sun! The generally accepted earth core temperature is thought to be no more than 7,000 deg K) From this, one can surmise that he is feeling rather warm under the soles of his shoes, and will be beating a hasty retreat from his AGW position and begin promoting ….. drumroll ….. Geothermal Energy.
I’m not so sure Al Gore isn’t THE AUTHORITY on the temperature of the Earth’s core. The WUWT post “Gore cancels on Copenhagen lecture – leaves ticketholders in a lurch”, 3 December 2009 has a picture of Mr. Gore that with a little imagination clearly indicates Al knows whereof his forked tounge speaks. Wherever you plan to spend eternity, it’s a good idea to know what the temperature will be like.
