LIVE at 1 pm ET, 10 am Pacific: Climate Alarmist Education – The Climate Realism Show #131

Heartland Icon

The Heartland Institute

America’s educational system used to cover the “three Rs” — reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic – but that has long been abandoned from elementary school through college and even medical school and replaced with ideological indoctrination. Now the University of California, San Diego is requiring students to take a class in “climate change” to earn a degree. Classes such as “The Astronomy of Climate Change”, “Gender and Climate Justice”, “Indigenous Approaches to Climate Change,” and “Environmentalism in Arts and Media” are on offer. What is driving the push for shoving climate alarmism into every academic subject under the sun?

On Episide #131 of The Climate Realism Show, we invite Steve Goreham on to discuss. Steve is the executive director of the Climate Science Coalition of America and author of four books, including “Green Breakdown: The Coming Renewable Energy Failure.”

Heartland’s Anthony Watts, H. Sterling Burnett, Linnea Lueken, and Jim Lakely will also cover some of the Crazy Climate News of the week. Join us LIVE at 1 p.m. ET so you can leave your questions and comments for the show in the chat.

This show will be archived and available at WUWT Climate TV, a collection of over six hundred videos, featuring new interviews and analysis, and covering dozens of media sources discussing, debating and analyzing the latest in climate science, climate politics, and energy policy, including topics concerning temperature, sea level, polar bears, ocean acidification, extreme weather, censorship, wild fires, and more.

I’ve been getting the same message for a month or more on my PC.
The YouTube app on my TVs? No problem.
(Though I’ve never tried to get to YouTube via the TVs’ “web browser”.)

They SHOULD be requiring a course on CRITICAL THINKING, LOGIC AND REASONING.

Badly needed in today’s “propaganda machine bombardment” atmosphere.

They SHOULD be requiring a course on” nothing.
If I’m paying, let me pick the courses. How about:
They SHOULD be …” recommending ” … a course on” whatever.

Universities, of course. Public K-12 schools, one rarely gets to pick anymore. A few electives, such as band and art and chorus, but not many. Some IT and media also. But core courses? Nyet!

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

STORY TIP

The irony of this story totally makes my Friday. According to this YouTube video, fire stations in Australia and Germany caught fire themselves because of …..drumroll please…lithium-ion batteries.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YkfWyj2TiA

The fire station in Hesse state, Germany was reportedly brand new. Neither station had fire alarms to warn the firefighters. This could not be scripted any better for a movie.

Let’s stop pretending this has anything to do with the climate. Or science. Just read the course names.

Now, the Astronomy of Climate Change sounds like science, doesn’t it? I spent a few minutes on the UCSD website looking for a syllabus, or even a description but came up empty. I remain skeptical that this course will cover astronomical influences on the climate.

America’s educational system used to cover the “three Rs” — reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic – but that has long been abandoned from elementary school

ah yes the good old days when we all used to walk to school 5 miles through 10 feet of snow
up hill both ways.

University of California, San Diego Now the University of California, San Diego is requiring students to take a class in “climate change” to earn a degree.

fact check. does this mean all degrees all students.

lets check a few.

https://ucsd.edu/academics/undergraduate-degrees.html

Ill check my majors.

Linguistics

  • Completion of 12 upper division courses with C- or better (exception: up to four units of LIGN 199 taken for pass/no pass may count towards the major. In order to satisfy the upper-division course requirements, students who enroll in LIGN 199 for just two units are advised to enroll for another two units in a subsequent quarter.)

https://linguistics.ucsd.edu/undergrad/courses/all_courses.html

Literature
here are four majors within the Department of Literature, and requirements vary from major to major. Below you will find the major checklists, faculty advisors, and additional resources and opportunities for students to explore. Your faculty advisor will be available to assist you with such issues as academic progress, research opportunities and career paths within your field.
All our majors require:

  • Twelve upper division courses (48 total units)
  • Secondary Language & Literature requirement (see below for details)
  • All courses taken for a letter grade
  • All courses receive C- or higher grade
  • Advanced Placement (AP) scores that provide P/NP credit for Literature courses may apply to the major requirements. Contact advising (via the VAC) if you have any questions.

Philosophy
https://philosophy.ucsd.edu/undergraduate/philosophy-major.html

now, im strugglin to find any requirement for climate studies.

Understand this. attendance at a UC system school is totally voluntary.

dont like a liberal education where you ar forced to read stuff you disagre with?
and foce to cite your sources, and support your claims?

well then I suggest this

Not challenging your research.

There is always the possibility that these requirements come into play next academic calendar, which means they would not yet be listed.

Analysis of alternatives.
Your point about listing sources is valid.

Well, from the second link:

We are thrilled to announce that the Jane Teranes Climate Change Education Requirement (JTCCER) was approved at the Academic Senate’s Oct. 10, 2023 Representative Assembly meeting. The establishment of this new graduation requirement for incoming first-year students, beginning fall 2024, is designed to empower our students with the knowledge and skills needed to confront the urgent global challenge of climate change. UC San Diego has long been a leader in climate change research.

Seems pretty clear. I imagine the result will be a lot of kids using AI to help them write alarmed essays about the climate crisis. The usual result of such efforts at indoctrination is either ridicule or internal exile.

The British Labour Party seems like its going down this same path, like the Guardian with its famous Clark County letter writing campaign. The Labour Party, now in government, is sending a thousand or so activists to try and persuade Americans to elect Harris rather than Trump.

One imagines being told by a Brit how to vote will lead to a strong reaction, find out how they are asking me to vote, then do the opposite. Just as it did in Clark County, and probably swung it for Bush. They never learn. The Soviet Union never learned.

UCSD won’t learn either.

If AI writes all the essays, and uses online essays to learn, it will disappear up its own orifice. I heard recently that they did that very test on AI and it did. Might have been written by AI though.
This is a certified non-AI comment.

That could be read a number of ways in addition to the obvious one.
First pass I thought you meant students could either show up to classes or not show up to classes- which is always true but probably a poor strategy for success.

“used to cover the “three Rs” — reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic”

Seems you missed out on at least two of those. !!

A knowledge of climate change is required of all candidates for a Bachelor’s degree who are admitted to UC San Diego as a first-time, first-year student in Fall 2024 or thereafter.

Should of course read, an indoctrination in climate propaganda is required….etc….

Of course (npi), it may be an unwritten rule – if climate change isn’t in the extras your academic progress is over.

Jane Teranes Climate Change Education Requirement (JTCCER)

A knowledge of climate change is required of all candidates for a Bachelor’s degree who are admitted to UC San Diego as a first-time, first-year student in Fall 2024 or thereafter.

Starting with the first-year student cohort entering in fall 2024, candidates for the Bachelor’s degree will be required to complete a one-quarter course approved by the Academic Senate to fulfill the JTCCER.

The three Rs? I have long argued that basic education is four Rs: Reading, Riting, Rithmetic and Reasoning. Like the ring in Lord of the Rings that bound them all, the fourth R binds the Rs.

Back in the days of the one room school house, reasoning was not required, it was already present.
