China did 12 billion tons of CO2 emissions in 2023. The author of the linked piece makes no forecast of what these will be in 2030 though he opines vaguely about some percentages. But its tonnage that matters, that is the interesting number. What does he, and what do you, forecast China will be emitting annually in 2030?
My own forecast is that it will be somewhere north of 15 billion tons. What is yours?
I would also forecast that by 2040 the number will be close to 20 billion. The Chinese have not bought into global warming and have no intention of reducing their emissions. They will grow their economy, and whatever that leads to in terms of emissions is fine with them.
By the way, I also think that whatever the West does, global emissions will be well north of 45 billion tons in 2040. What do you think they will be, and why?
India, Russia, Brazil, etc., all will do the same as China.
China uses more 50% of the world’s coal consumption, for all purposes, including electricity generation
The economies of the 30 BRICS countries, members and applicants, will grow much faster than the West.
In 2023, 82.5% of world energy for all purposes was from fossil fuel, the rest mostly hydro and nuclear, and a few percent of wind and solar, after 30 years of huge subsidies.
Don’t misunderstand my point please. If someone makes a reasoned case that disagrees with my views, I would defend their right to a dissenting opinion and engage them in discussion.
Lusername doesn’t do anything but re-post propaganda. Is it even a real person? How does it almost invariably post the first message on an open thread?
Yes, you are right – on both counts. There do seem to be either bots or multiple accounts by the same person, and their objective does seem to be purely trolling – posting provocative posts often ill founded to the point of absurdity with the sole aim of provoking indignation and polluting the discussion threads.
And probably the best way to deal with them is simply ignoring them. I responded in this thread but probably should not have.
CO2 is THE GAS OF LIFE, and a tripling of the current level would be optimal for plant growth. The increase in recent decades has resulted in a substantial greening of the planet. This is a positive thing for the food supply and should be encouraged. CO2 (in the atmosphere and the ocean) is probably the most valuable molecule on the planet. More is better. Life would not be possible without it. As to the climate, history shows warm is better than cold…
CO2 plus water, plus sunlight, produces glucose, the food/energy source of all sorts of flora, which produces products that all sorts of fauna can consume.
CO2 ppm at about 1200 ppm is optimal for almost all flora, which is well- known to greenhouse owners all over the world
Net Zero is a suicide pact recommended by an inordinate number of idiots.
Increased atmospheric CO2 and access to cheap fossil fuels have taken the world from poverty to prosperity in less than a 100 years. This is unprecedented in history and has made possible improvements in technology, health care, education, longevity, etc. We even have less wars than we used to. We were lucky to get out of the dreadful Little Ice Age that caused people to die of starvation or freeze to death on the streets of Europe!
Net Zero is only possible as long as the subsidies keep running, out the earnings from industries still running on cheap energy.
Energy is the bloodline of any economy. The cost of energy accumulates down the supply chain, and the aggregate costs of the NutZero experiment ends in the hands of the consumers and the taxpayers. EVERYTHING get more expensive. You don’t need to be an economist to understand that this is doomed to fail. It needs to be stopped before it’s too late!
The Polar Science Center has updated its estimates of Arctic Sea Ice Volume for August. Here is an updated image showing August values and smoothed plots (Lowess, f=0.3) for all 12 months from 1979 to the present, with August in bold black.
These values of ice volume began leveling out over 10 years ago.
P.S. Yes, the absorption and emission of infrared energy by non-condensing “greenhouse gases” is a real thing, but Incremental concentrations in the atmosphere are not capable of forcing heat energy to accumulate down here – certainly not to harmful extent.
David, you posted a dynamic graph a while back showing what I think were energy flows within the atmosphere. Would you mind posting it again as I can’t seem to find it in past posts. The takeaway was that the contribution of additional CO2 to dynamic energy flows was minuscule. Would you mind posting it again? Thks
Thank you for asking, Nelson. This is what you are referring to, I believe. It is about energy conversion as computed in the ERA5 reanalysis. This parameter is not an energy “flow” per se, but the concept arises because of the circulation of compressible fluid (i.e. the atmosphere) involving huge flows and storage of mass and energy. Please read the full text description at this Youtube video. I will also post it here in a reply.
Here is the full description for that video. “Are CO2 emissions a risk to the climate? No. The static “warming” effect of incremental CO2 (~4 W/m^2 for 2XCO2) disappears as kinetic energy (wind) is converted to/from internal energy (including temperature) + potential energy (altitude).
This time lapse video shows the daily minimum, median, and maximum values of the computed “vertical integral of energy conversion” hourly parameter from the ERA5 reanalysis for 2022. Values for each 1/4 degree longitude gridpoint at 45N latitude are given. The vertical scale is from -10,000 to +10,000 W/m^2. The minor incremental radiative absorbing power of non-condensing GHGs such as CO2, CH4, and N2O vanishes on the vertical scale as the rapidly changing energy conversion in both directions is tens to thousands of times greater.
So what? The assumed GHG “forcings” cannot be isolated for reliable attribution of reported surface warming. And with all the circulation and energy conversion throughout the depth of the troposphere, heat energy need not be expected to accumulate on land and in the oceans to harmful effect from incremental non-condensing GHGs. The GHGs add no energy to the land + ocean + atmosphere system. Therefore the radiative properties of CO2, CH4, and N2O, and other molecules of similar nature, should not be assumed to produce a perturbing climate “forcing.” The concept of energy conversion helps us understand the self-regulating delivery of energy to high altitude for just enough longwave radiation to be emitted to space.
“2. Energy, available potential energy, and gross static stability Of the various forms of energy present in the atmosphere, kinetic energy has often received the most attention. Often the total kinetic energy of a weather system is regarded as a measure of its intensity. The only other forms of atmospheric energy which appear to play a major role in the kinetic energy budget of the troposphere and lower stratosphere are potential energy, internal energy, and the latent energy of water vapor. Potential and internal energy may be transformed directly into kinetic energy, while latent energy may be transformed directly into internal energy, which is then transformed into kinetic energy. It is easily shown by means of the hydrostatic approximation that the changes of the potential energy P and the internal energy l of the whole atmosphere are approximately proportional, so that it is convenient to regard potential and internal energy as constituting a single form of energy. This form has been called total potential energy by Margules (1903). … In the long run, there must be a net depletion of kinetic energy by dissipative processes. It follows that there must be an equal net generation of kinetic energy by reversible adiabatic processes; this generation must occur at the expense of total potential energy. It follows in turn that there must be an equal net generation of total potential energy by heating of all kinds. These three steps comprise the basic energy cycle of the atmosphere. The rate at which these steps proceed is a fundamental characteristic of the general circulation.””
David, the above seems somewhat at odds with what I understand what internal energy, kinetic energy, and potential energy are in relation to the atmosphere.
Internal Energy (U) is all the energy in a system.
Kinetic energy would exist only if the system translated. Otherwise it is internal.
Potential energy would exist only if the system changed elevation. Otherwise it too is counted as internal.
If the entire atmosphere is the system and boundaries are TOA and earth surface then there is only internal energy.
Any ideas on what the system/surroundings are to be considered?
“Any ideas on what the system/surroundings are to be considered?”
Numerical weather prediction is based on finite element iterative computation of mass and energy flows for each grid cell on the planet, to characterize localized conditions over time. The ERA5 reanalysis model uses, I believe, a 31 km grid horizontally with 137 layers vertically. Each cell can be characterized at each time step. The hourly “vertical integral” parameters, such as for energy conversion, kinetic energy, internal+potential energy, internal+potential+latent energy, etc. compute values for the entire atmosphere column over each grid location. More here if you are interested. https://confluence.ecmwf.int/display/CKB/ERA5%3A+data+documentation
Internal energy is specific heat at constant volume times temperature, potential energy per unit mass is gz, which seems like it says the whole system must go up or down to change PE. However, since a unit mass is the density times volume, the integration of gz over dm to evaluate potential energy becomes principally an integration over dP (P=pressure), which of course changes laterally as well as vertically. Thus, atmospheric physicists combine potential and internal energy into a form they call “total potential energy”.
Fluid physics becomes sort of messy at the scale of the Earth.
DD, “The assumed GHG “forcings” cannot be isolated for reliable attribution of reported surface warming.’ This has bothered me for years. So pleased you brought it up in the important context of movement. Nice work. Geoff S
The fact that analysis of balloon data shows an absolutely linear energy to molecular density relationship. show the gas laws are in control of energy transfer in the atmosphere.
CO2 is a gas, hence cannot make any difference….. period.
Only substance that is not always a gas in the atmosphere .. is H2O
“…the gas laws are in control of energy transfer in the atmosphere.”
It may take a few more years for it to become clear to more folks, but the attribution of reported warming to incremental CO2 has been unsound all along for this reason and its implications.
Since the link you posted brings up a video on geothermal energy, with nothing about
“energy flows within the atmosphere”
perhaps you could provide something like the exact title which might be useable in a search for the correct video (if it still exists)?
I have no idea why you are getting a different video. The same link still works to bring up my video I posted. But in any case, here is a link to my Youtube channel. The video I linked earlier is “Energy Conversion in the Atmosphere.” My Youtube name is @DavidDibbell
Thank you for your interest.
Edit: Be aware that an advertisement clip (added by Youtube, not by me!) may play first when the video is played.

Promises, promises….
“”The energy sector is one of Labour’s priorities going into the general election. Having pledged to decarbonise UK power by 2030, the party wants to achieve several bold goals simultaneously: delivering energy security, saving money for UK households and creating thousands of jobs, while also positioning the UK as a world leader in clean energy. “” https://www.newstatesman.com/spotlight/sustainability/energy/2024/03/labour-green-energy-net-zero-renewables-hitachi
Pledged? It’s a SOS! Read on…
“”This letter provides a formal commission to the ESO, in advance of becoming the National Energy System Operator (NESO), to provide practical advice on achieving clean power by 2030 for Great Britain….””
Plus as reported in the Telegraph Millivolt is removing approval for the last Nuclear project added in Mar of this year removing future base load generation, dropping the Wind Turbine generation Targets on the expectation the current plan he wants to accelerate is too ambitious (can’t get my head round that one) and banning licences for il and gas.
His target for offshore wind in 2030 is unreachable because there is a worldwide shortage of the three kinds of specialised vessels needed to build offshore wind farms. These vessels are not cheap , £250m plus each, and UK,obviously, is not the only country wanting to use them. Construction of offshore wind turbines also requires ports capable of doing the job.
On the land front there are also considerable supply problems as demand increases. Turbine manufacturers in Europe have been losing money for years and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) expects bottlenecks in the supply chain from mid decade “for multiple key components”
It took 40 years to reach1TW of wind power. Countries are now attempting to install a further 2TW by 2030.
I know they are unreachable, he must know or he would not be considering dropping the current target. But he is at the same time still going to achieve Net Zero by 2030.
That makes no sense at all, was that stupid letter he wrote recently written asking for a Net Zero by 2030 plan written with the expectation of the answer being No.
I struggle to make sense of it other than saving for another 30kwh of batteries that I will need,
I think that him and his comrades (special advisors) have realised that they are nowhere near where they dreamt they would be and the letter to National Grid is their attempt to make it someone else’s fault.
DeludEd is a major liability, he needs reining in!
I agree he probably wants to shift the blame but the letter really shows that neither he nor Chris Stark have a clue as to how to achieve the 2030 target that they have been touting for several years.
Like most politicos they seem to think they lust have to announce something for it to happen. They obviously made no attempt to actually find out if it was possible.
State betting big on wind energy despite summer failures
Boston Herald (TNS)
BOSTON — Gov. Maura Healey is going all-in on wind energy.
Amid the fallout of the Vineyard Wind turbine blade failure off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts has secured the largest offshore wind energy procurement in state history.
The selected 2,678 megawatts from three projects, announced Friday, is also the largest purchase in New England to date and is part of a coordinated effort with Rhode Island, which will receive 200 megawatts.
More than 1.4 million Massachusetts homes will be powered through offshore wind generated from the procurement, according to officials. They say the allotment will “reduce the state’s carbon emissions by the equivalent of taking one million gas-powered cars off the road.”
“Today we are proud to announce that, along with our partners in Rhode Island, we are taking an important step towards energy independence, cleaner air and transforming our economy,” Gov. Maura Healey said in a statement. “Simply put, we are going big. … The world will look to New England for the future of clean energy.”
The procurement comes amid a tumultuous time in the offshore wind industry, which has been especially felt across the Cape and Islands.
No mention of what happens to those 1.4 million homes with the wind isn’t blowing. And of course that many homes won’t be powered with this wind “farm” in the best of times when the wind is blowing at the perfect speed. And no mention of what the real cost will be.
Can one of you REAL energy experts tell me about how many homes can be powered with 2,678 MW of wind energy? That is, under ideal conditions- knowing of course it’s seldom ideal conditions and often there is no wind. I sent the above to my “fans” here in Wokeachusetts- meaning many state officials, enviros, greens, forestry folks, friends, etc.- most of whom NEVER respond though I know they all read my “rants” because some have said so.
Of course, how ever many homes can be powered now, under ideal conditions- as of now, it’s still a small % of homes have EVs. If everyone had an EV, that would drive up home needs by about how much? I’d think it must be significant.
The accepted figures for a UK household are 900W
The accepted capacity factor for wind is 23% (or 40%m if you are a renewable shill using ‘model projections’, or the government)
I don’t understand the units very well- but if the capacity factor was 100, then the claim is not far off- at least in order of magnitude- but the capacity factor is 23% and that’s only when the wind is blowing? At least around here in central New England, the wind hardly blows during a summer heatwave- just when I’m cranking up all 3 ACs. Only now in September are we seeing breezes.
As we all know- NY state has a vast amount of shale with oil and gas. It’s right next to us- but both states shun developing those fields. It’s insane. We could have some of the cheapest power in the world instead of some of the most expensive.
Trump is one of the best debaters among politicians. Prepared? You bet. He will roast his opponent about the mess she made in her time in California. Because she was invisible as VP.
Rambling old geezers who’s only move is to insult their opponent are not very successful in debates.
Especially not with swing voters who have any sense of decency. Trump already has a problem with them because of the adultery and fraud.
And it will be even worse attacking a woman. It’s not chivalrous.
All Harris has to do is not be senile and Trump’s toast.
MCourtney… Hmm… I think you underrate Trump in this situation, and overrate the American public’s moral compass. If they have not worked out yet this man has the morals of a turd, they are not going to now.
And…He is a formidable opponent one on one. Not because he is smart, clearly he isn’t. Not because he is well read, he is not. But because he has a presence that is hard to combat. He is like the school yard bully with a big mouth and fist and all the other kids laugh with him, because they are scared that if they don’t, they will be next for his whipping.
And we need to be honest, there are very large question marks about how Harris will go here. We have not recently seen her having to debate. Yes she was/is a dynamic and successful prosecutor. She took down some very big criminals. But can she go toe to toe with the Donald? I’m not so sure. And, I see Bill O’Rielly has said if Trump loses this debate he is gone…. That might be a bit extreme, but then again… And what if she loses? Is she gone? So many questions.
Moral compass? Every modern Western country has its moral compass spinning like a top. How is that relevant?
We make our political decisions based on policy, not personality. We don’t oppose Dementia Joe or Cacklin’ Commie-la because we don’t think they’re nice people. (Even though they aren’t).
We oppose their policies that destroy our livelihoods and personal liberty and safety through open borders and the Green New Scam, Covid shenanigans, and endless pointless wars.
Trump is flawed in many ways, like most people. I would prefer someone who speaks in full sentences with verbs and stuff. But what matters to me is what policies his administration pursues, not which skirt he pursues. (At least the skirts aren’t on a dude).
“Moral compass? Every modern Western country has its moral compass spinning like a top. How is that relevant?”
Oh I dunno. I would have thought screwing porn stars (two of them)while your wife is giving birth and sexually violating women and ripping off the taxpayer, and robbing innocent students (Trump university) would cross the moral boundary of most people on the planet… but not Mericans apparently. They seem to love this sorry excuse for a human being. ” through open borders “
Don’t waste your breath. Trump shut down any hope of a bipartisan solution to closing the borders. No cred there I’m afraid. He no more wants the borders shut than he does his next victims legs.
Sigh
Simon, your TDS has blinded you to all sense of proportion.
You swallow whole every allegation against Trump, no matter how far-fetched. But somehow it seems normal and entirely reasonable that a crack- and hooker-addicted guy who doesn’t know anything about natural gas or Ukraine would be on the board of directors of a Ukrainian natural gas company. That the wife of a Russian oligarch would send him millions. That Chinese CCP-connected “businessmen” would pay further millions.
Aren’t you a socialist and an atheist? You seem incredibly blasé about financial corruption (except if Trump is alleged to be involved), and curiously judgmental about consensual sexual activity (not to concede your allegations). Don’t sex workers have a right to make a living according to your political allies?
The laughable bipartisan border bill was an amnesty bill that barely reduced the flow of bogus asylum seekers. The intent of which is to bring more undocumented Democrats into the country.
“You swallow whole every allegation against Trump, no matter how far-fetched. “
On the contrary…All the ones I quoted have been through the courts. I didn’t go near the gossip options.
“But somehow it seems normal and entirely reasonable that a crack- and hooker-addicted guy who doesn’t know anything about natural gas or Ukraine would be on the board of directors of a Ukrainian natural gas company.”
Nope Hunter Biden is a crack head it’s obvious. And yes he used his name to get a position he didn’t deserve. But he is not running for president so what’s your point? and if you want to delve into families that use their name to get places they don’t deserve…. then I’d start with the Trump family. Google the name jared Kushner and Saudi Arabia.
“Aren’t you a socialist and an atheist? You seem incredibly blasé about financial corruption (except if Trump is alleged to be involved), and curiously judgmental about consensual sexual activity (not to concede your allegations). Don’t sex workers have a right to make a living according to your political allies? ”
Now you are just being silly. Are you saying only Christians have morals? Crazy…. and I don’t care who Trump screws… it’s when he parades as some sort of fake Christian to appeal to the evangelicals and then hides his sordid past from voters that I object.
The point is that it should be obvious that Hunter was nothing but the bagman for his father who has always been involved in influence peddling. This is not a scam by Hunter to trick some naive rubes from the CCP and the Ukrainian oligarchs. They paid because Hunter delivered.
But blinkered socialists like you seem to be able to ignore the obvious because of your pathological hatred of Trump.
“The point is that it should be obvious that Hunter was nothing but the bagman for his father …” But it wasn’t which is why the investigation by the Republicans turned up zero, zilch nada. A complete waste of taxpayers money.
There’s a big difference between seeing an obvious coverup and being able to prove it in a court of law, Simon.
(Especially when the people responsible for enforcing the law are complicit in the coverup, including slow-walking investigations so that the statute of limitations expires).
You may be deluded enough to convince yourself that the Ukrainians, Chinese, Russians, Romanians, and others all showered Hunter with millions without being assured of a quid pro quo, but most people are not blinded by their socialist ideology like you are.
“You swallow whole every allegation against Trump, no matter how far-fetched.”
I think there are a lot of people like Simon. They are easily influenced by leftwing propagada. The disturbing part is even intelligent people are subject to being fooled into believing things that are not true.
Repeating lies over and over and over again works even with supposedly intelligent people.
When you believe something that is not true, that means you are delusional. Unfortunately, delusional people don’t realize they are delusional. Therein lies the problem.
Separating truth from fiction can be difficult sometimes. Deliberate liars like the lying Leftwing Media don’t help matters.
The first thing one needs to do is automatically disbelive any claim coming out of the leftwing media.
If they have evidence to prove their claim, then that’s different. But they never provide evidence, they provide spin.
They repeat lies that have been formally debunked like the one where they claim Trump said at Charlottsville that White Supremacists were good people.
Joe Biden says Trump complimenting White Supremacists at Charlottesville was the reason Biden decided to run against Trump.
But it is all a BIG LIE. Trump actually says on video that day that he specifically does not mean White Supremacists or any other radical groups are “good people”.
But that doesn’t matter to Democrats. They have the lie they want to tell and that’s what they do.
They still tell this lie to this very day. I’m betting Kamala will tell this lie tonight at the debate.
It’s been thoroughly refuted. But not everyone in the world knows this and the Democrats count on people not being too well-informed. So they lie and lie and lie in hopes it will benefit them politically.
The trick to discering the truth is to reject anything the leftwing media says and assume it is all lies aimed at political manipulation, because that’s what about 99 percent of what they put out really is: Political propaganda.
“The first thing one needs to do is automatically disbelive any claim coming out of the leftwing media.”
Interesting. I am aware that they may have got this particular one wrong (the good people)…. but then I could name numerous ones the right have got wrong.
“The trick to discering the truth is to reject anything the leftwing media says and assume it is all lies aimed at political manipulation, because that’s what about 99 percent of what they put out really is: Political propaganda.”
If you really think only one side lies Tom… then a lot of what you say makes complete sense now. I take a much more pragmatic view. If a statement is disputed, I dig deeper to see whether I can find evidence for it. If I can’t, it was probably nonsense. An example….
Trump said these words a couple of weeks ago…. “Remember when Biden sent Kamala to Europe to stop the war in Ukraine. She met with Putin, and then three days later, he attacked. How did she do? Do you think she did a good job? She met with Putin to tell him, ‘Don’t do it.’ And three days later, he attacked; that’s when the attack started. Did you know that, General?”
The truth…. Harris has never met Putin. Never…. Trump lied. I can give you hundreds of times Trump has lied. From saying he had the greatest economy to the largest crowds. To the time he drew on a weather map with a sharpie. he just can’t help himself. I guarantee he will lie dozens of times tonight. Let’s see.
Anyway, I think we need to be suspicious of all politicians and check everything they say….. don’t you?
Trump seems to bring out the worst in the deep state. I haven’t forgot
the Steele dossier and the FBI paying Igor Danchenko . Just the body
language of Harris will be worth watching if you know what to look for.
And it was reported today that Russia is funding news outlets in the US to support Trump. Russia again, since it worked so well before. Russia, Russia, Russia.
I’m not all that confident. It will be three-on-one. If the moderators aren’t egregiously partisan and unfair, I will be truly shocked.
The moderators will be Democrat operatives. They know that they need to sell Commie-la as the opposite of who she is in reality. They’re going to ask questions that help her spin everything in the best possible light, and at the same time can be counted on to distract us with irrelevant topics that goad Trump off message.
They played it straight in the debate against Dementia Joe, because the plan all along was to pivot to Commie-la. They will have their fangs out. It will be red in tooth and claw.
Trump better be ready to ignore all the provocations and tie every answer to the economy, the border, crime, and freedom of speech.
Leo, I think he knows that. And a hyena (the critter that sounds like a cackling Californian) has spots, not stripes. But the hyena has been going around mimicking the tiger, hiding her spots, pretending to have stripes.
So many clever comments. But I think they sail over a lot of heads.
As my public service, I explain the jokes. E-9 is a military pay grade, the highest enlisted grade, that includes the National Guard rank of Command Sergeant Major. VP candidate “Weird” Tampon Tim Walz, had that rank until he quit to avoid going to Iraq. The different ranks’ insignia have different “stripes”. Thus the reference to changing stripes enough to reach E-9.
He provisionally had that rank for a short time, while he was stationed in Italy
When he saw the questions on the security form he had to TRUTHFULLY UNDER OATH answer, there was no way he could get a top secret clearance, because of his 30 trips to China, and other dubious China activities
Without that clearance he could not ENTER the Command Sergeant Academy to get a permanent appointment to E-9.
He informed his superior officer of his predicament and told him he would have to resign.
He then decided to run for a US House seat, and his embellishments, embroiderings, and lies continued.
BTW, Many decades ago I had a secret clearance, not top secret
Harris, a cackling, incoherent cipher, was a mousy, totally ineffective, lack of presence, “border tsar”.
The Sovereign State of Texas will complete its 1000 miles of wall started during Trump’s first term.
As ordered, Harris provided the deciding votes on $TRILLION dollar, deficit-increasing acts, such as IRA, with offshore wasteful European wind turbine trash, which will not be implemented under Trump
He will drill, baby, drill to lower fossil fuel prices, from day one, which will reduce all pricing in the US, increase real spending power of consumers, because fossil fuels are used for making just about everything.
During the debate, Trump will use his two-minute slots to smother Harris with facts, totally “undress” and distress her, as she tries to vacuously respond.
Watch the assembled commentators after the debate – they will smooth over any ruffles and tell you what the VP really meant to say, and explain that the former President”a statements were all based on lies. But rememberl that the VP”s values haven’t changed.
Remember, the VP’s radical leftwing values haven’t changed.
Kamala is running away from her radical leftwing values now because she knows they are not acceptable to the majority of the American people. So she lies and pretends to be a moderate.
Of course objective reality will be that Trump wins the debate, but in the Democrat Media Complex, it’s already a foregone conclusion that she was brilliant.
I expect that right-leaning media will say Trump won and left-leaning media will say Harris won. Pretty much the same as any debate except the last one.
“communism”….too simple of a conclusion…left…right…fascist…communist…even fundamentalist religious groups, and ecoloonies, whatever spin you put on it is just a tool to achieve the end result….there are people who simply want control over everyone….the oldest aphrodisiac. And they believe it can be done with extensive central planning…so it kind of looks like communism to believers in minimum government.
I think that DMac’s point is not to attack your religion or mine, mk, but to say that scumbags have always highjacked popular belief to position themselves at the top of the power pyramid, whether that required hypocritically pushing a religion that they don’t sincerely believe, or an anti-religious movement that was supposed to be about equality, where shockingly they as leaders don’t actually share the hardships of the population equally, or pushing Green Nihilism but still flying their private jets across the globe.
No it will not. The last Super Bowl attracted 210 million viewers. The last debate pulled about 51 million. It almost certainly won’t even reach a third of the Super Bowl ratings.

There were two power failures last night in LA while I was watching the USC/Utah St. football game. Both delayed the game for 15 or so minutes as the field lights were out. Power failures where blamed on grid overload due to high temperatures. Temperatures at the time were in the 80’s F but it was very hot during the late afternoon. Could the problem really be loss of renewable input to the grid when the sun goes down and power demand remains high?
California imports a lot of electricity from nearby states during higher demand times, especially when wind and solar are minimal, plus California has a lousy, often over-loaded grid infrastructure.
An open thread at last, all this talk of climate change is driving me crazy. Sea levels for example, what do they think is going to happen with all those rivers running into the sea, every day, filling it up. We need to build more Dams, China has built a few, granted, they’re saving the planet.
Temperatures is another, there was the el Chichón volcano in the 1980’s, it was a real corker, all these half a degree rises in temperature are just residual heat, and don’t forget the A-Team, how many episodes was it, about 80, and almost every last one had a shoot-out next to some barrels of gasoline, I ask you, what do you expect? Come on man.
And then there’s ‘disappearing Islands’, well China a building loads of them, on top of coral reefs, so who is saving the planet now, eh?
More people will learn to swim and use life preservers, in case of higher water levels.
Usually, rich people live on eroding seashores. Let them eat sand!
China Ramping Renewables & Slamming Brakes On Coal Could Mean Massive CO2 Reductions By 2030
https://cleantechnica.com/2024/09/05/china-ramping-renewables-slamming-brakes-on-coal-could-mean-massive-co2-reductions-by-2030/
The record is stuck…
I don’t think I posted that already.
“”I don’t think””
Indeed, you copy and paste your selected snippets of the narrative. And it’s always the same: China. China ramping up renewables etc etc etc
China is obviously your go to beacon of hope. Have you considered Shenzhen’s [car free] Net City? They say it’s nice…
You would know Lusername, as long as your programmer didn’t delete your logs.
The record is stuck
But you are not a ‘Climate Futurist’, which the author of the cited junk article proclaims himself to be (sarc.)
climate prophet (or should it be climate profiteer?)
And Africa hasn’t even got started.
“They will grow their economy AND MILITARY POWER”.

And of course, the more countries around the world want wind and solar..
… the more COAL China will have to burn to make it. 🙂
Wind and solar are TOTALLY UNSUSTAINABLE as a form of electricity supply.
Technically and economically UNSUSTAINABLE
Technically, economically and environmentally UNSUSTAINABLE!
Right!
Don’t let the troll-bot control the discussion with its nonsense!
Change the subject. Mock it and move on.
“If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking.” – George S. Patton
Wishful thinking by cleantechnica.
Hell Bubba, if China is cleaning up their act why do we bother? Our emissions are nothing compared to theirs. Global problem solved.
Let’s party.
China gaslighting the mentally lacking.
The planet will be fine. Tell the children.

P.S. Yes, the absorption and emission of infrared energy by non-condensing “greenhouse gases” is a real thing, but Incremental concentrations in the atmosphere are not capable of forcing heat energy to accumulate down here – certainly not to harmful extent.
There is NO CLIMATE EMERGENCY!
I will also post it here in a reply.
https://youtu.be/hDurP-4gVrY

The ERA5 reanalysis model is a product of ECMWF, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The computed parameters “vertical integral of potential + internal energy” and “vertical integral of energy conversion” are described at these links.

Further comment:
This is for just one latitude band at 45N. Similar results were observed for 45S, 10N/S, 23.5N/S, and 66N/S.
More Background:
From Edward N. Lorenz (1960) “Energy and Numerical Weather Prediction”
https://doi.org/10.3402/tellusa.v12i4.9420
“2. Energy, available potential energy, and
gross static stability
Of the various forms of energy present in
the atmosphere, kinetic energy has often
received the most attention. Often the total
kinetic energy of a weather system is regarded
as a measure of its intensity. The only other
forms of atmospheric energy which appear
to play a major role in the kinetic energy
budget of the troposphere and lower stratosphere
are potential energy, internal energy, and the
latent energy of water vapor. Potential and
internal energy may be transformed directly
into kinetic energy, while latent energy may
be transformed directly into internal energy,
which is then transformed into kinetic energy.
It is easily shown by means of the hydrostatic
approximation that the changes of the
potential energy P and the internal energy l of
the whole atmosphere are approximately proportional,
so that it is convenient to regard
potential and internal energy as constituting
a single form of energy. This form has been
called total potential energy by Margules (1903).
…
In the long run, there must be a net depletion
of kinetic energy by dissipative processes. It
follows that there must be an equal net
generation of kinetic energy by reversible
adiabatic processes; this generation must occur
at the expense of total potential energy. It
follows in turn that there must be an equal net
generation of total potential energy by heating
of all kinds. These three steps comprise the
basic energy cycle of the atmosphere. The
rate at which these steps proceed is a fundamental
characteristic of the general circulation.””

Thanks.
DD,
“The assumed GHG “forcings” cannot be isolated for reliable attribution of reported surface warming.’
This has bothered me for years.
So pleased you brought it up in the important context of movement.
Nice work.
Geoff S
Thank you Geoff, I hope more folks with technical backgrounds such as yours can come to appreciate this point as time goes on.

Lying comes easy to these people.
Cave dwelling here we come.
You really cannot make this stuff up. Miliband is very much the son of his father. A Marxist elitist.
the latest result of having the moronic ideologue involved in energy:
https://open.substack.com/pub/davidturver/p/what-the-ar6-auction-results-mean-for-consumers?r=3wbxq3&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email
Sadly, this was all agreed previously under Sunak. After the last auction disaster – no takers – they had to up the subsidies.
Miliband…. taking credit for something he hasn’t done? Shurely shome mishtake…
This video goes through the math you want – it is excellent.
They say the allotment will “reduce the state’s carbon emissions by the equivalent of taking one million gas-powered cars off the road.”
A total irrelevance- there are ca.eight billion vehicle miles driven in the USA every day.
Wokeachusetts is so small- you can hardly find it on a globe- but our governor is going to bankrupt the state to save the planet.
Do nor’easters ever hit your state?
Sure, every winter. I presume they’ll shut down all the wind machines.
What are these guys thinking? They should check out the Wikipedia file on “nor’easters” which starts in 1888.
I have seen clips on the TV of windstorms destroying the blades of the turbine.
The wind farms have to be built first. This is an agreement to start negotiations. I am betting it will all get too expensive like it did in New York.
A better solution for Massachusetts is to start negations with both Russia and Chine for their barge mounted nuclear generators.
As we all know- NY state has a vast amount of shale with oil and gas. It’s right next to us- but both states shun developing those fields. It’s insane. We could have some of the cheapest power in the world instead of some of the most expensive.
“It’s insane”
Yes, it is.
Democrats are insane and formulate insane plans.
This coming Tuesday night, a debate is scheduled between Trump and Kommie-la.
What do you think will be the outcome?
Will there be any legitimate questions asked?
Will the moderators rescue the cackler each time she flounders?
Will the Green New Scam come up?
Will Trump be prepared?
The intent of which is to bring more undocumented Democrats into the country.
no matter how far-fetched.
And no matter what evidence he’s presented to disprove it.
He knows how to attack the messenger, has this bit of sophistry down pat.
“The point is that it should be obvious that Hunter was nothing but the bagman for his father …”
But it wasn’t which is why the investigation by the Republicans turned up zero, zilch nada.
Simon the simpleton certainly has no morals.
Willie Brown….. that is Kamala’s morality that the simpleton worships. !!
So tell me Tom. What is your strategy for filtering information to ensure your best chance of getting to the truth? I’d love to know.
“ best chance of getting to the truth?”
Not listening to anything Simon the simpleton sprouts, would be a good start.
And inveterate LIAR and ultra-biased left sprouting continued far-left propaganda and deceit… Because that is all he is capable of.
Let’s see.
Anyway, I think we need to be suspicious of all politicians and check everything they say….. don’t you?
The simpleton has zero clue what “morality” is..
It lacks any moral compass whatsoever.
And absolutely ZERO credibility on anything.
Oh and “bipartisan”, to the left, means agreeing with exactly what they want.. in this case.. totally open borders.
Why should Trump compromise with that idiocy.
Trump seems to bring out the worst in the deep state. I haven’t forgot
the Steele dossier and the FBI paying Igor Danchenko . Just the body
language of Harris will be worth watching if you know what to look for.
She may start crying
Perhaps she will be permitted to bring a stuffed animal to the debate. THAT would look great on the world stage.
And it was reported today that Russia is funding news outlets in the US to support Trump. Russia again, since it worked so well before. Russia, Russia, Russia.
Sadly it worked better than we want to admit. The accusation always gets more credence than the vindication.
Can a tiger change its spots?
Clever. The question answers itself?
But can the hyena change its stripes?
Well if you are going down that rabbit hole, can the bandersnatch lose its frumiousity?
Can the Jabber change its Wock?
Tigers don’t have spots…
Leo, I think he knows that. And a hyena (the critter that sounds like a cackling Californian) has spots, not stripes. But the hyena has been going around mimicking the tiger, hiding her spots, pretending to have stripes.
Enough to be promoted to an E-9?
So many clever comments. But I think they sail over a lot of heads.
As my public service, I explain the jokes. E-9 is a military pay grade, the highest enlisted grade, that includes the National Guard rank of Command Sergeant Major. VP candidate “Weird” Tampon Tim Walz, had that rank until he quit to avoid going to Iraq. The different ranks’ insignia have different “stripes”. Thus the reference to changing stripes enough to reach E-9.
No, no, no.
Better yet, they will GIVE her handlers the questions for both sides.
If Harris could not put up a decent performance with such an edge, she is truly a nutsy zero.
From your mouth to God’s ear!
And therefore by cutoff and suppressed by the moderators. “You can’t handle the truth,” is what they believe about the viewing audience.
Not watching it. No new questions will be asked and no new answers will be given.
Watching talking heads on TV regurgitate nonsense is a waste of time.
It’s not how you play the game, it’s whether your win or lose.
The outcome is already known, has been written up, and is waiting only for the end of the debate for publication:
Kamala won.
Sorry to have to agree
Trump would lose a debate for the first time against a lowly cipher?
Of course objective reality will be that Trump wins the debate, but in the Democrat Media Complex, it’s already a foregone conclusion that she was brilliant.
Yeah, that’s what Trump said, too. He said if he demolished Kamala in the debate, the leftwing media would still say Trump lost and Kamala won.
I expect that right-leaning media will say Trump won and left-leaning media will say Harris won. Pretty much the same as any debate except the last one.
He was mean, hateful, racist and misogynist. That is pre-ordained.
They don’t want unlimited clean energy, they want communism.
It was a “fundamentalist” religious group that got laws passed to free slaves. Seems at odds with your premise of wanting “control over everyone”.
“fundamentalist” is a misused word like”communist”….thanks for helping make my point.
Then maybe he should that.
Republicans. There, fixed it for you.
I wonder if the number of Harris v Trump debate viewers will exceed the number of superbowl viewers? Any bets?

Speed bumps in the sea level rise-
‘Oh my God, what is that?’: how the maelstrom under Greenland’s glaciers could slow future sea level rise | Glaciers | The Guardian
Eschew impure thoughts and just keep telling yourselves the science is settled chaps. Nothing more to see here move along.
