A new Columbia Business School study is out with the latest bizarre claim about man-made global warming — it could alter people’s personalities.
“As climate change continues across the world, we may also observe concomitant changes in human personality,” reads the study, published in the journal Nature on Tuesday.
It’s only the latest in a slew of studies on the potential psychological effects of future warming, and it’s not even the most bizarre. For example, recent studies have claimed worry about global warming is making people depressed.
Those worried about man-made warming reported “feelings of loneliness and lethargy,” Reuters reported of a University of Arizona study.
For some environmentalists, lack of hope for the future seems to be real. The New York Times recently reported that some people are deciding to forgo having children because of global warming.
Even more bizarre, a 2015 Harvard School of Public Health study claims, “Carbon dioxide (CO2) has a direct and negative impact on human cognition and decision-making.” Basically, suggesting global warming will make humans dumber.
Columbia researchers claim temperature is a key factor in determining personality traits. People who grew up in more temperate areas, around 72 degrees Fahrenheit, scored better on five broad personality traits than those who grew up where it’s too hot or too cold.
“Clement temperatures encourage individuals to explore the outside environment, where social interactions and new experiences abound,” Jackson Lu, a Columbia doctoral candidate, said in a statement.
Lu contends that future global warming could mean personality changes across the world over time.
“Venturing outdoors and interacting with lots of people make people more agreeable, conscientious, emotionally stable, extraverted, and open to new experiences,” said Lu. “But when the temperature is too hot or too cold, individuals are less likely to go outside to meet up with friends or to try new activities.”
How accurate or reliable is this study? That’s up for you to decide.

The study In Nature (open access): Regional ambient temperature is associated with human personality
“Those worried about man-made warming reported “feelings of loneliness and lethargy,” Reuters reported of a University of Arizona study.” Yea. I worry that so many belive it! Makes me down right depressed.
Climate fear mongering can cause mental illness in those inclined to listen to their negative thoughts and irrational fears. It is most prominent in a human subgroup that self-identify as Progressives, a deliberate misnomer for Socialist. The mental instability known as Climate Clinical Regression Afflicting Progressives (CCRAP) is perniciously irrational, expressing itself in the afflicted as a fear of their own exhaled breath adding to ‘CO2 pollution’. Additionally, they fear the increase of molecular CO2 in our atmosphere from 3 molecules in 10,000 all the way up to an extreme of 4 molecules in 10,000. Do you see the irrationality in those baseless fears?
Fortunately, a rational mind easily discerns CCRAP, as expressed by the progressively afflicted.
The 1st step to recovery for the poor dears, is admitting they need help with their irrational CCRAP……
Exactly: “suggesting global warming will make humans dumber”. I see it in California.
Hmmm. I wonder if pumping kids full of drugs to make them pliable and docile has any effect?
..or insurance-funded opioids when they get older
“pliable and docile”? Me?
Excuse me while I go have another severe coughing attack to avoid taking those nasty insurance-funded opioids. It’s just so much more natural than actually stopping the violent coughing……
“Venturing outdoors and interacting with lots of people make people more agreeable, conscientious, emotionally stable, extraverted, and open to new experiences,”
Last time I was out at a night club, damn near everyone in the building was bent over their phones. No eye-contact anywhere.
So much for interaction.
Last time I was out at a nightclub mobile phones hadn’t been invented. Damn near everyone had their eyes closed because drugs. No eye-contact anywhere.
Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose…
BELIEF IN MANN MADE CLIMATE CHANGE EXPLODES MORE BRAINS
Took his out long ago, didn’t it?

It’s true. I moved to the tropics. Floating in my 30C pool at night, looking at the stars shining and the silloutes of my palm trees, I get so depressed….
Turn up your pool temperature. You’re supposed to be mad!
The search for a link between CO2 and Global Climate certainly does affect and in the long term, destroy people’s brains. The weather and climate are not so effective.
I was so depressed at the stock market today that I went to the local Panera’s and had a nice sandwich and iced tea sitting outside in my t-shirt and shorts. Great pick me up.
Now if they can just get this officially listed as a ‘disorder’ or whatever – and they seem to be able to do that for just about anything these days – Big Pharma will be very happy. I’m sure they can come up will some pill for this, preferably (for them) addictive.
Let’s see. “Climate Related Abnormal Personality” could work, in many ways.
Oops. Should have read the other comments first. Pardon my redundant thoughts.
We already have SAD (seasonal affective disorder). It doesn’t necessarily require drugs, though. Just full spectrum lighting. Guess that wouldn’t qualify?
Again, urban couch potatoes substitute personal opinion assumptions for direct observations.
It certainly isn’t hard to spot exactly who refuses to venture outside when temperatures are too hot or too cold. They likely also avoid foggy, rainy and snowy days too.
It is the kind of assumption that someone makes who’s idea of outside weather is because they dress for riding in heated/cooled vehicles, rather than walking to their destination. How terrible it must be for them to briefly experience hot or cold weather while heading to their rides.
Why on Earth would I want to be extraverted?
Caring for Your Introvert
There are too many scientists and far too much money competing in a world that has already discovered so much that the law of diminishing returns………with respect to the amount of scientific study needed to produce new revelations that kicked in decades ago….is making it extraordinarily difficult for today’s scientists to make new discoveries that make an authentic contribution to science.
But we still have massive amounts of money and scientists working to find less and less.
As the amount of authentic science discovered per scientist/dollar has plunged in the last couple of decades, it has become common practice to dress up shit science and use verbiage to describe it that spins it into “unprecedented” or “unique” in order to justify its existence.
In the field of climate science, the only limitation to what can be discovered is the creativity of those doing the studies.
I really find it hard to believe that people actually get funding to perform such studies…
Frankly, I prefer it a bit on the cool side as far as outside temperature goes. Sure, cold kills. So does heat. I can dress for the cold, and spend the whole day outside in -20 F temps relatively comfortably. But, you can only take off so much clothing, in public, in the heat, before local law enforcement will want to have a chat with you.
If a person is not well adjusted enough to begin with, then I guess the weather COULD push them over the edge into a full blown mental condition. (Most of which are completely imaginary anyways…) Perhaps those ill adjusted folks could do themselves and all the rest of us a favor and remain in their homes and businesses sheltered from the evil that lurks outside in the form of sunshine, or snow.
There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.
I agree. I like winter much more than summer. Correct dressing helps. I increased my closet contents considerably when I geared up for snowshowing, ice fishing and so forth.
I can kind of understand what they’re talking about. When sitting in a hot tub in below freezing temps, it is rather annoying when your hair freezes to the outside of the tub. I’ll have to wait till spring.
Those people at Columbia don’t have to worry though. They don’t even need to be concerned. ;-} Even if the Zombie apocalypse does happen. They’ll be safe.
The illustration at top of the article reminds me of one that I did a few years back:
Great minds … (^_^)
Can I get the one on the right (consensus science) in a black light poster. It’s like just so psychedelic.
Is there a lava lamp option?
One thing I have noticed: there is never any “research” made into the effects of global cooling to provide any sort of balance. It’s always “further warming will/could.might/ cause THIS.” and is never coupled with “on the other hand, cooling would/could/might/ cause ….”
Would cooling change personalities too?
For better?
Or Worse?
Or not at all?
Nor do they ever ask “Why are this planet’s tropics so prolific? ”
(Shhh! Maybe because they’re warm … ?)
My 4 year old plays out all day in Thailand where it is 35 degrees Celsius (95 F) all year. He speaks both fluent Thai and English and since he just started school is learning Chinese and is singing songs in that language… he is happy little soul… I am in the UK at the moment and everyone is miserable because of the cold… most Brits struggle to speak their own language… guess where I want to be right now!! Perhaps if the universities in the “West” raised their entry standards back to where they were 30 years ago we would see some mindful research instead of the blubbing of second rate academia.
Well a mean temperature of 72 is what percentage of the globe? Hello to all of you maladjusted denizens of the everywhere but San Diego.
Let’s see. We spend 24/7 trying to scare the crap out of you, but it’s global warming’s fault.
You have to admire the Chutzpah.
This massive intelligence test is doing my head. Just tell me what I scored and I’ll go on the B ark quietly if I failed.
Ah, yes – I’m much happier now with everything covered in snow and ice than with plants blooming and birds singing around me. As if! (I think I’ll self medicate with a nice single malt in the weekend, personality not at it’s best in cold surroundings) 😉
Global warming could alter people’s personalities. Yup. He used to be sane
It looks like the Columbia Business School study is trying to validate President Trump’s “s&%#hole” country statement- people from those warmer, tropical countries presumably suffer from personality defects.,
It seems obvious that Global Warming could alter people’s personalities – I can’t believe that Mann has ALWAYS been full of hate and bile against climate sceptics
“Feelings of loneliness and lethargy” could be the result of, oh, I don’t know . . . 1,500 different causes? ABSOLUTE CLAPTRAP masquerading as not claptrap.
It’s not the personality that’s being affected directly, but it’s the ability to think clearly. It’s not climate change that causes this, as climate change has even been implicated in making mankind smarter as we have continuously adapted to a variable climate. It’s the obsessive, compulsive fear about climate change that’s causing the brains of the alarmists to rot. If these rotting brains only believed in the scientific method, the harm they are doing to themselves could be stopped.
