350.org climate clowns gather to demand end to fossil fuels, while oblivious to their surroundings

idiots_times_squareI always get a kick out of climate protest marchers, because these rent-a-rants generally make complete fools of themselves, and the process is very entertaining to watch. For example, this person doesn’t seem to understand what the canister on a gas mask does.

That frame is from a video posted by the 350.org McKibbenites who hope to have a big “climate march” on Sept 21st. So where do they shoot their publicity stunt for maximum effect? Times Square, New York City, surrounded by giant energy consuming screens, marquees, and billboards all powered by…you guessed it…fossil fuels.  Watch the video:

============================================================

How much energy is used in Times Square?

Times SquareSo just how much electricity is required to keep Times Square running? Well, it is a difficult question to answer because Times Square, which stretches for about five blocks along Broadway,  is actually part of a larger power grid which also encompass the entire Theater District that runs several blocks in every direction from Times Square.

At peak usage, the New York power company, Con Edison, estimates that power consumption in the Theater District is 161 megawatts of electricity being used at once, with Times Square accounting for a decent chunk of that power consumption.

========================================================

Here is what these oblivious 350.org clowns say about their video:

On Wednesday July 30, we publicly announced the People’s Climate March – the largest march demanding action on climate change in the history of the planet.

The march will be on September 21st, 2014, when world leaders are coming to New York City for a UN summit on the climate crisis. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to dramatically reduce global warming pollution.

With our future on the line and the whole world watching, we’ll take a stand to bend the course of history. We’ll take to the streets to demand the world we know is within our reach: a world with an economy that works for people and the planet; a world safe from the ravages of climate change; a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities.

Join us on September 21st.

…..BTW, what exactly is “environmental racism?”
The campaign to deny cheap energy to the Third World, which consists mainly of several billion yellow-and brown-skinned people, by a millennialist, misanthropic cabal fronted by naive, altruistic air-heads.

“How much does it cost to rent one of those billboards for a few hours? Wouldn’t it be a hoot to have global temps from RSS for the last 18 years in the background during their march? Oooh, I’d donate generously to make that happen. Perhaps some scrolling quotes from Climategate to go along with it?”

Great idea!!! I bet Chris Monckton has a few contacts. Oh please let it happen.

Rent-a-mob agitprop buffoons with no idea what they’re protesting at, time on their hands and nothing better to do. Every nation has their share of them. #useful_idiots.

I am sorry WUWT I feel very strongly about this march and will be joining them, I have formed a charity –
“I promise to stop using all fossil fuel products straight away upon signing this document”
I am charging 50 dollars for them to sign up to my charity and they will get a certificate to proudly display on their wall with their name and all the products they will not be using upon signing.
http://www-tc.pbs.org/independentlens/classroom/wwo/petroleum.pdf
so there WUWT , we will show you who holds all the power.

At any rate, preemie babies are incubated in 7% CO2 (175 times atm) to help their lungs develop.

Do you have a source for that?

I’ve seen this same “never trust anyone over 30” crowd thousands of times in my lifetime…always on a tether manipulated by marxist/leftists. Yawn. Most will grow up and, one day, hopefully return to the ranks of useful citizenry. Unfortunately, some will persist and replace today’s tether manipulators. What a bore.

It needs saying again. Surrender to these people, surrender to the E.P.A.. Give them exactly what they demand. Close the coal fired power stations now.
How long before they Demand That the lights come back on.

Sounds like there is some confusion –
One source says 7% is toxic and another says
CO2 is hazardous via direct toxicity at levels above 5%, . . .
and on down in this document, there is this: my bold
I also found research on 7% carbon dioxide on the retinas of baby mice–because this level is deliberately used on human beings–preemie babies to help their lungs develop faster.

You might like to look at the brochure and MSDS for Inergen, a fire suppressant gas. The composition is Nitrogen 52%, Argon 40% and Carbon dioxide 8%. When released into a confined space to put out a fire, the oxygen content of the resulting atmosphere should drop to about 12.5% and the carbon dioxide content increase to about 3%. As most materials will not burn with an oxygen content of less than 15% it puts out most fires. However, humans can live in atmospheres with only 12.5%. Carbon dioxide is added to the mixture because at a level of 3% the body reacts, breathing faster and taking deeper breaths, thus making better use of the available oxygen. The above is from the Inergen brochure.
The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for Inergen states, in relation to the CO2 content, that the STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit) is 30 000 ppm, ie 3%. There must be some safety margin in the figure quoted (there normally is such a safety margin) which of course means that for very short time the exposure can be over 3%. OSHA defines “the STEL is a 15-minute TWA exposure that should not be exceeded at any time during a workday.” See:

Not powered completely by fossil fuels. Well over a quarter of the power comes from Indian Point.
Not that this would matter to these nitwits. I wouldn’t be surprised if many of them, when they’re not spreading climate hysteria, are working to close Indian Point. It’s that “evil” nuclear power.

How come most people in the video are, to be kind, portly? Surely they grow their own food naturally and they all ride bicycles.

September 21st, eh? First day of fall. A day signifying the coming of cooler weather as the hours/minutes of sunlight decrease. How…appropriate.

Let us pretend they get their wish. Then what happens?
The supermarket is gone, because it will be impossible to transport food in a timely manner. That means all your food will have to be local and in season. And their will be much less food because the tractor will be gone. That means mass starvation and fights over the last remaining cans of food. Instead of sipping lattes and pining about how evil big business is, most will have to work hard. The positions of leader is already taken by those telling you to march and when they die it will only go to the ones they favor, not you. And without the fossil fuel powered vehicle of the postal service to deliver welfare checks in a timely manner or the fossil fuel powered electronic welfare card readers, you will have to work hard to make money to get everything. Oh, and don’t forget Facebook will be gone since the internet needs a lot of electricity from fossil fuel powered sources.
Really, these useful idiots are children of privilege who lack the ability to think things through to the logical conclusion.

Some of these estimates assume CO2 is formed in by using up O2, e.g. the 5% figure might be for 15% O2.
Others assume CO2 is added to the standard atmosphere, so at 7% CO2, O2 would be 93% of its usual 20%.
And I assume not all measures of toxic effects have the same response.

Break out your wood cook stoves, gather in your horses. We’re going back to the days of the wild wild West! This is gonna be great! I can’t wait to see all these fat lazy Americans go back to working 15 hours a day to keep from starving. It is truly what they deserve – and what they are begging for.

They are conflating mythical “carbon pollution” and actual pollution, both in words (asthma, and other health issues) and symbolically, such as with the fellow in the gas mask. It is a deliberate lie, and one that the mindless clueless climate bots swallow whole.
As for their big Sept. 21 climate march, many of them will be professional paid protesters, bussed in from accross the country. It is all for show, symbolism, and pure emotionalism. None of it is based on fact or actual science.
