I always get a kick out of climate protest marchers, because these rent-a-rants generally make complete fools of themselves, and the process is very entertaining to watch. For example, this person doesn’t seem to understand what the canister on a gas mask does.
That frame is from a video posted by the 350.org McKibbenites who hope to have a big “climate march” on Sept 21st. So where do they shoot their publicity stunt for maximum effect? Times Square, New York City, surrounded by giant energy consuming screens, marquees, and billboards all powered by…you guessed it…fossil fuels. Watch the video:

How much energy is used in Times Square?
So just how much electricity is required to keep Times Square running? Well, it is a difficult question to answer because Times Square, which stretches for about five blocks along Broadway, is actually part of a larger power grid which also encompass the entire Theater District that runs several blocks in every direction from Times Square.
At peak usage, the New York power company, Con Edison, estimates that power consumption in the Theater District is 161 megawatts of electricity being used at once, with Times Square accounting for a decent chunk of that power consumption.

Here is what these oblivious 350.org clowns say about their video:
On Wednesday July 30, we publicly announced the People’s Climate March – the largest march demanding action on climate change in the history of the planet.
The march will be on September 21st, 2014, when world leaders are coming to New York City for a UN summit on the climate crisis. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to dramatically reduce global warming pollution.
With our future on the line and the whole world watching, we’ll take a stand to bend the course of history. We’ll take to the streets to demand the world we know is within our reach: a world with an economy that works for people and the planet; a world safe from the ravages of climate change; a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities.
Join us on September 21st.

The photographers all kept their f-stop focus to blur out once beyond the immediate crowd. Looking past the near protesters one can easily ascertain that there are very few protesters there considering the population density of the big Apple. I wonder if they were promised Coney Island dogs (frankfurters usually good ones).
Don’t forget that quite a few are semi-pro protesters busing or hitchhiking from out of state.
350.goofballs should pack it in; without the massive billionaire leftist financial influx, 350.whatever would even have trouble getting support for a cupcake bake sale; if bake sales are not already illegal in NYC (such dangerous foods require imprisonment and fines, according to the left).
CO2 lethal exposure level is 110,000 ppm.
Submariners are commonly exposed to levels of 8,000 ppm for long periods (SSBN patrols of up to 70 days or so).
Optimal levels in greenhouses for plants: 1,000 ppm to 2,000 ppm.
This is what results from George Soros, Agenda 21, unionized teachers, Common Core Curricula, and feckless politicians.
What I see in the above photo is a bunch of youngsters having fun during fine weather. Not one looks old enough to have experienced any global warming at all, considering there has been NO global warming for the past ~18 years. They are just doing what youth does best… party. GK
“Peoples…” is a code word for Communist[s]. It is amusing how they don’t even attempt to hide it anymore. “Our ideas led to the murder of at least 100 million in the 20th Century, give us a chance with setting climate policy. What could go wrong???”

How about the power company turn off the juice for the duration so they can get to know what it would be like if they got their way.
No Lights
No Phones”
I immediately thought,
“No phone, no lights no motor cars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primative as can be.”
Yes, undoubtedly they are using sex to sell the Idiots’ Climate March. Oldest sale’s ploy in the book.
No doubt there will be other, more tangible perks as well, besides the overall “party” atmosphere.
They are rebels without a clue.
“We’ll take to the streets to demand the world we know is within our reach: a world with an economy that works for people and the planet; a world safe from the ravages of climate change; a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities.”
. . .A world with low paid, unproductive, hard and brutal jobs, air dirty with the soot from forests that are ravaged for firewood by a desperate humanity, a shortage of water as there is no longer power to process it, and communities bent under the burden of poverty, hunger and disease.
You can stick your world guys.

Thank you, John F. Hultquist, for the reply link. Really appreciate it, and the time to bother.

Translation: We really have no idea just how great we have it right now, but please GIVE me a good paying job, healthcare, and a good standard of living without me having to work for it, as it is obvious it is being kept from me by nefarious evil people. Oh the humanity!

How much does it cost to rent one of those billboards for a few hours? Wouldn’t it be a hoot to have global temps from RSS for the last 18 years in the background during their march? Oooh, I’d donate generously to make that happen. Perhaps some scrolling quotes from Climategate to go along with it?
I, too, would contribute to this. Anyone here know how to make it happen?

I did some very preliminary research. The high profile boards are usually booked by the month, sometimes by the year, and well in advance. Millions per month for the big ones. So as fun as it would be, we’d probably be looking at $100K + just for a few days, plus set up costs which I imagine would be substantial. I don’t think there’s enough time to get the set up and contract arrangements done in that time frame, let alone raise that much money.
Perhaps someone from the advertising business could jump in?
It’s amazing that they found enough parking for all of their unicorns in NY City!
Let’s petition Amtrak to put pedals in the passenger cars as a substitute for a locomotive so that these nitwits can personally supply the energy to power their “People’s Climate Train from SF to NYC @ur momisugly Amtrak California Zephyr and Lake Shore Limited” (And they can only eat arugula and tofu – no meat.)

I challenge them to make 100 tons of steel for just one mile of RR track with only solar and wind power. (& sorry nitwits no coal is allowed, you must make your coke from tree charcoal and haul it from the forest using solar, solar powered animals or wind power as well.)
here has been several mentions of “Environmental Racism”. Apparently they are decribing themselves, as green groups are “too white and too male”.

The alternative is to get someone to walk around the protest wearing a sandwich board putting the other point of view.. As it was your idea I nominate you…
I will sell the tickets….I am looking for someone to take over the popcorn franchise at the event.
Good luck!

The old moving signs burned more energy and produced much heat. Once they rezoned times sq as a special district, it is now required that you cover the building with lights. Granted most are now the high output LEDs which use less power than incendesent but the number of lights has increased 10 fold or more.
With all the building in NYC that much more Electricity and Gas is used. Indian Point Nuk plant is still running, which is 25 miles up the Hudson from NYC. Up the Hudson Valley you see signes on the lawns of Retarded people saying to shut down Indian Point. And use what? Candles?
NYC is up to and past 55,000,000 visitors a year. Everyone of them goes thru Times Sq. and comes on a plane and eats in a restaurant and sleeps in a hotel. All these things need power. Boing doesn’t make a commercial plane that runs on electric or unicorn farts yet.
Stupid is as stupid does.
I think they should all go and spend a month camping on Isle Royale!
Yes I think September surrounded by Lake Superior, would be a good commune with nature and shun some the “carbon polluting” niceties of modern society like cell phone, internet connections, daily showers and hot meals on demand.

LOL. Are you going to pay my expenses to travel across an entire continent too? (I’ll throw in the sandwich board for free).
The guy in the gas mask is dressed – and equipped – to kill, without leaving his DNA, prints, hair,

A lot of Kool-Aid drinkers in that crowd. And my favorite union is involved. SEIU. /sarc/
Carbon-based fuels are both renewable and degradable. And, in some ecosystems, they are a critical nutrient for simple organisms. However, they share the same problem with every other chemical known to man: in concentration, they are toxic to life. So, exploit them purposefully (i.e. application-specific) and rationally (i.e. mitigate their toxicity).
Chemicals, including water, and even hormones and vitamins and nutrients, can kill you in the wrong dosages.
The problem is that environmental activists have adopted the stance that all chemicals used by people, in any process whatever, are “guilty until proven innocent.” That amounts to over 10,000 chemicals which are on trial for causing tumors, inability to pay attention, etc etc etc.
The second assumption by environmental activists is that if enormous doses of any chemical can be demonstrated in lab animals to cause problems (particularly create tumors which rats usually get anyway), then this applies to humans as well, as a one to one relationship.
The third assumption is that if huge doses of any chemical used, in any process, to create any product or food, is found to cause any health effects in enormous doses, then it must be legislated to no-dose levels eventually, even though exposures in practice are only very tiny molecular amounts.
Not good science at work here, in the majority of cases. It is a paradigm developed by the Boomers and is deeply entrenched in their world view.
Maybe it’s as simple as all lefties are missing the gene that gives them critical thinking skills. At least it would explain much of what’s wrong with the world.
But the replacements the greens prefer are usually ineffective, and are sometimes genuinely toxic. For example, the low-water environmentally “chosen” laundry soap once burned my skin and ruined a good pair of shoes.
Another instance includes CFLs, which contain more than safe levels of mercury in every light bulb. State laws vary. It is also volatilized mercury, which is not like the little mercury thermometers. The bulbs, often made in China, are known to leak and spontaneously explode. All within homes and closed exposures.
