Pacific Leaders Worried About 'Climate Gravy Train' – Criticise Aussie PM Tony Abbott's Apostacy

From Australia Network News: Pacific presidents speak out against Australia’s stand on climate change

Leaders of small Pacific nations have spoken out against Tony Abbott’s efforts to organise a global coalition against Obama’s climate push.

The comments from the presidents of Kiribati and Marshall Islands came as Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott met US President Barrack Obama for formal talks in Washington.

The leaders suggested Australia’s climate stance under Tony Abbott risked further isolating Australia from the Pacific.

Kiribati’s President Anote Tong says climate change is an issue of survival for Pacific Island states, not just economics.

“We’re not talking about the growth GDP, we’re not talking about what it means in terms of profit and losses of the large corporations, we’re talking about our survival,” he told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat

President Anote Tong has received strong criticism in recent years for the rise of authoritarianism under his rule, such as the recent forced closure of an independent newspaper critical of his government.

Politicians who crush dissent, free speech and criticism of government mistakes are rarely associated with a healthy domestic economy, so President Tong may be counting on future climate wealth transfers from Western countries to help prop up his regime.

Just redirect the ore boats to the islands and offload less valuable rock and sand. But then that will not satisfy them because they really want the money for larger airports, resorts, and personal wealth.

cargo cult noun (Concise Encyclopedia)
Any religious movement based on the observation by local residents of the delivery of supplies by ship and aircraft to colonial officials. Cargo cults were observed chiefly in Melanesia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were characterized by the expectation of a new age of blessing and prosperity to be initiated by the arrival of a special “cargo” of goods from supernatural sources. Such beliefs may have expressed traditional millennial ideas, often revived by the teaching of Christian missions.
A lot of these Islanders have grandparents that were caught up in this after WWII. Maybe they should have learned if didn’t work for them and caused many to laugh at their primitive thinking.

“President” Tong – the guy represents about 100,000 people – that’s a lot less than most county commissioners in the US – on top of which, he can’t even run that little entity with any competence – hardly someone anyone should be paying any attention to.

The Gilbert and Marshall Islands are coral atolls. The highest elevations on these are seldom over twenty feet above sea level. Storms can completely erase an island imperiling all the inhabitants. Few places on earth are more subject to the threat of catastrophic change. And change they do, the topography of coral atolls is constantly changing. They are not stable places. If over 50% of North American’s believe “climate change is real and something should be done about it.” Why should we be surprised that isolated and and very poor islanders believe the horror stories offered up to them about what will happen to their islands? Historical perspective and recollection among these peoples is rooted in oral tradition, more mythic than factual. I mean they call themselves Marshallese and Gilbertese (Kiribati is how the Islanders pronounce Gilbert). So there is no historically accurate record of the topography of these atolls. But the short history dating from the mid to late nineteenth century is enough to give a clear picture how much change occurs. So if the wise ones come to you with the keys to the secret knowledge that will make your Island home more safe and secure, what sort of idiot would publicly speak out against it? What is the upside for a Marshallese being outspokenly skeptical? What if he is wrong? Big downside. What if his skepticism is right? No upside. Its one thing to persuade a man he isn’t causing global warming, quite another to convince the islanders they aren’t suffering from its effects. Adanac might emigrate to the Marshalls. No wait, the Chinese are there too.

It’s ‘apostasy’.
I wondered why John Oliver was at such pains to present Abbott as a bit dim. Or is Abbott a bit dim?

Global warming is a funny old thing.

Abstract

Now what have the Maldives been doing to tackle climate change? They are building 5 more ‘underwater’ airports and 30 additional new luxury class hotel complexes. Thereby encouraging more flights, more co2 resulting in a decline in sea levels. It’s worse than we thought!

Just a quick reminder about something most here are aware of.

Abstract
The dynamic response of reef islands to sea-level rise: Evidence from multi-decadal analysis of island change in the Central Pacific
Low-lying atoll islands are widely perceived to erode in response to measured and future sea-level rise. Using historical aerial photography and satellite images this study presents the first quantitative analysis of physical changes in 27 atoll islands in the central Pacific over a 19 to 61 yr period. This period of analysis corresponds with instrumental records that show a rate of sea-level rise of 2.0 mm yr− 1 in the Pacific. Results show that 86% of islands remained stable (43%) or increased in area (43%) over the timeframe of analysis…….

Adanac who clearly signals his wont to have Canada regress to a backward country as his sig implies!! ,and has somehow been thwarted by a move away from the left in Canadian politics, now wants to immigrate.
This is very similar to the strident cry of the Anti Abbot haters that want to protect their entitlements from any encroachment or contribution to the recovery of the Australian economy, that suffered under the excesses of the Green/Labor period of the Rudd and Gillard Governments, that managed to squander a surplus into by our standards a huge debt in record time. That huge debt if not addressed now, will linger or grow exponentially in the future.
I see that some here still listen to the Greens leader Christine Milne and her band of watermelon cobbled together followers, who are trying desperately to stop the dismantling of their green quango – read “pot of salted away gold” to protect green idealism and onward waste on failed renewable energy schemes, their business as usual economy trainwreck.
Now back to adanac, I would encourage you to convince Greenpeace and all those other Green moneyed groups to buy into some third world country where you and your migrating companions can create your own green utopia, then you and all of the Abbot haters can get out of their respective countries and live under Bill McKibben (Weepy Bill) or some other Green dictator, and also open up and provide an attractive new country for resettlement of all those climate and war weary migrating citizens who are available for instant resettlement under the auspices of the United Nations.
In one fell swoop you will have solved your own problems and you and yours can live happily ever after and most of us in Australia would be happy if you took all of our whingers too, but you do need to make an effort and not expect the rest of the world to contribute to your paradise.
So get cracking and stump up the money enough to convince someone somewhere, that your presence will make their life better, simpler, greener, and more abundant. Easy Peasy!
