This is quite some headline on E&E’s Climatewire this morning. I’d call it “unprecedented”.
Unfortunately, the story is behind a paywall, so we can’t read why they think this way.
But it underscores the desperation that is permeating the mainstream climate community…they have come to realize that climate has become a taboo political subject, one almost guaranteed to be political suicide this year.
Add the fact that the Goreacle has fallen off the radar…
And Romney got a standing ovation at the RNC for this line mocking Obama’s “healing the planet” speech…
“President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans,” pausing for the audience to laugh at the absurdity, “and to heal the planet. My promise … is to help you and your family.”
I think we can safely say that global warming as a campaign issue for the left is dead.
We’ll see tonight if Obama needs the money that bad:
Oh, and then there’s this:
Climate change so serious Democrats mention it once in over 80 speeches over two days
UPDATE: Tom Nelson has this worth sharing:
One of five Obama quotes that you may not hear in his speech tonight: “As we speak…cars in Boston and factories in Beijing are melting the ice caps in the Arctic, shrinking coastlines in the Atlantic and bringing drought to farms from Kansas to Kenya.”
[Obama] I often find myself trapped by the questions and thinking to myself, ‘You know, this is a stupid question, but let me … answer it.’ So when Brian Williams is asking me about what’s a personal thing that you’ve done [that’s green], and I say, you know, ‘Well, I planted a bunch of trees.’ And he says, ‘I’m talking about personal.’ What I’m thinking in my head is, ‘Well, the truth is, Brian, we can’t solve global warming because I f—ing changed light bulbs in my house. It’s because of something collective’.”
2. Rise Of The Oceans Sound Clip , Quote, MP3, and Ringtone – Hark
[Obama] “This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow, and our planet began to heal.”
3. Obama: My Plan Makes Electricity Rates Skyrocket – YouTube
Barack Obama: “Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.” (January 2008)
4. Obama Says He Will Control Your Thermostat, “We can’t drive our SUVs”… – YouTube
obama oregon May 17 2008 “We can’t drive our SUVs and, you know, eat as much as we want and keep our homes on, you know, 72 degrees at all times…and then just expect every other country is going to say OK…”
5. Joe Soucheray: For those who believe anything, it’s easy to believe in Obama
“As we speak,” Obama said in Berlin, “cars in Boston and factories in Beijing are melting the ice caps in the Arctic, shrinking coastlines in the Atlantic and bringing drought to farms from Kansas to Kenya.”

There are few things more sickening than the American presidential race

Oh Yeah, name one.

“But it underscores the desperation that is permeating the climate community”
Anthony, please, oh please, oh please don’t use this unfortunate terminology. You are part of the climate community as are many others who don’t believe catastrophic man-made global warming (and/or climate change) is a proven issue. Call them what they are (catastrophists, warmists, AGW believers, CAGW proponents, whatever) but don’t cede to them ownership of the climate as a whole. It’s not theirs to possess and they haven’t earned that title. They are proponents of a hypothesis, not the owners of a pre-existing aspect of nature.

I think anyone who posts an off topic comment in the first 12 hours or so of a post’s existence should be cut off for the next week or so.

Superb post.
The earth is 6 billion years old (or 60,000 if you are a creationist) and current climate studies only cover the last 30 years. How could we even think about claiming global warming certainty with so little data?
What’s Al Gore doing?
I would be willing to bet that he is quietly dumping all his “green” investments. He knows it is over. He is going to leave all the little suckers holding the bag after he and other insiders like himself have cashed out.
Oh! To have a look at his recent finanicial records!

OT: if I may, I applaud Anthony for booting Eli Rabett and Oliver Manuel. Bad blog behavior is a drain and blight on everyone, the host most of all but also on visitors/readers. I find Judy Curry’s Climate Etc. pretty well unreadable because of the tedious perverse tendencies of some regulars there, not limited to any one of a variety of viewpoints (I think she has a lot of good articles but I rarely look at the comments there anymore). Life is too short for such nonsense — thank you Anthony for all you do!
Glad to see it is about science and not flag waving for your preferred policy option.
If the Republicans only invented one thing to distract Democrats from the real fight, which is for an economy that works for the middle class, climate change would be the perfect candidate. It’s a red herring, and judging by how it was handled by the DNC, Democrats are well aware of it.
President Obama made one mention of it in his acceptance speech, and is now unlikely to mention it again, much less do anything about it for the next four years. It’s like Republicans in years past on abortion: lip service only, which is exactly what we have seen for climate change from the White House since 2008.
Barack Obama will be re-elected. The stink factor around Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan is too high, and you know it’s true. Too many Americans will find themselves unable to pull the lever for them. And that, boys and girls, is a good thing. We desperately need to flatten income and wealth inequality in the country (we just passed the Ivory Coast in this regard), and our economy cannot function with so much of the country’s wealth tied up in so few hands. We NEED a strong middle class. The areas of focus will be wealth transfer, yes, wealth transfer, through education, expanded health care, research, and infrastructure projects. All good things, just like the GI Bill in its day.
Climate change will get another few plane tickets to the nearest climate convention, where enough umbrella drinks to cool the planet will be consumed.
It is certainly no joke to increase energy costs artificially to levels that the lower paid cannot afford. Are you listening Obama?
“President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans.”
LOL [as they say]. Did Obama really say that? The 3rd derivative of sea level?
Trying to be even-handed and not wanting to take any particular side in the party politics, but it reminds me of Nixon’s “The rate of increase of inflation is now falling.”
If Democrats & NGOs are withholding contributions to the DNC/Obama, does that mean the money will be returned to the US Treasury?
Climate change is a non-starter as most people in the US do not care. The alarmists have not been able to show any crises approaching. But most people know someone who is out of work, and everyone knows that inflation is a lot higher than the government lets on.

President Barack Obama’s Democratic National Convention speech declared that American voters can “do something about” extreme weather by supporting his re-election.
Obama: “And yes, my plan will continue to reduce the carbon pollution that is heating our planet – because climate change is not a hoax. More droughts and floods and wildfires are not a joke.
They’re a threat to our children’s future. And in this election, you can do something about it.” (For full Obama speech text see: President Obama’s Speech: Full Text From the Democratic National Convention – September 6, 2012

Climate change may have been demoted as a voter motivator, something I am relieved to see at the end of this summer. But, it still lives as a regulator motivator, ranking above God in the party platform. The scientific basis for climate change isn’t nearly as robust as the political basis. In the political, you need only have the possiblity of something bad – not any reasonable basis or expectation. That’s why you have every major newspaper, every university and the president using the word “pollution” as a vague pejorative in connection with carbon. (Why not oxygen pollution then? It’s corrosive, you know.)
Anthony despairs:
I assume the above vent was born out of frustration (not serious). Science articles can be found anywhere. It is the consequential discussion that most readers, come here for… IMO. It would be a grave error to assume that people come here to read the latest science. If you let people know that sufficient bad behavior will change blog policy… you will be inundated with bad behavior from the enemies of truth and open discussion. Don’t mention it or even think it… just ban them when they become numerous and continuously disruptive. Better yet, why not just get a few more volunteer moderators, if you can’t endure anymore? GK
“The problem with democracy is that 50% of people are of less than average intelligence, and about 30% are just batshit crazy.” This is about the funniest (and saddest) summation of our current state. Bravo!
Ugh. The next time you post, pre-read what you’re about to submit. What a mash-moosh of duplicated copy-pastes and broken excerpts inserted at random!
I gave up trying to disentangle it 1/3 the way through.
