Climate Craziness of the Week – 'blazing the trail'

Some people are just beyond help.

At Canadian embassy, global warming protester nears starvation

By IAN DUNCAN — Tribune Washington Bureau

On a patch of pavement outside the Canadian Embassy, Jay McGinley is trying to starve himself to death.

After drinking nothing but water for more than 30 days, he appears close to achieving his goal. When he stands up, his dark blue sweater hangs from a wasted frame.

On the 21st day of his hunger strike, May 15, McGinley was hospitalized briefly when his kidneys almost failed. He returned to his post the next day. Wednesday would be his 36th day without food.

He demands that the United States stop using fossil fuels, particularly those harvested from tar sands deposits in Canada. He is confident that if 1,000 people were to die for his cause, the government would act.

“I need to get us from 1,000 to 999 as fast as possible,” he said. “I need to blaze that trail.”

Apparently he’s tried this before: May 6th, 2007 from NPR:

Hunger Striker Wants to Make Difference in Darfur

Which goes back to 2005.

He apparently has changed his name to “start loving”. Like “Vermin Supreme” he seems to be a professional protestor. Here’s a blog about him. Me thinks he’ll pull out of this latest hunger strike at the last minute, after all, the man is a professional.

I leave you with this (those with weak stomachs may wish to logoff now):

After announcing her candidacy for President of the United States and Prime Minister of Israel, Roseanne Barr decides to talk to people on the street. Here is the interview that follows with peace activist “Start Loving.”

I have two questions: (1) is Jim McGinley (A.K.A. “Start Loving”) an organ donar? and (2) if he is and dies of starvation, are his organs still any good?
I’d like to think that perhaps some good might come out of such idiocy.

Can we just give him his Darwin award now?

Gail Combs

I would nominate him for the Darwin Awards but they stipulate

The Darwin Awards salute the improvement of the human genome by honoring those who accidentally remove themselves from it…

So I guess he does not qualify.

He left a place where he *could* make a difference, his family, his community. He walked away from them for something that was important to *him*. Something he knows he’s not going to make a difference on, an impersonal, giant distant problem. And now he’s trying to “check out” of that battle as well.
He is correctly seen by most observers as mentally ill, not as someone accomplishing anything. He could have done something, other people have, that would gather people to him and produce results, instead he pushes people away and accomplishes nothing. And he thinks 999 other people should do this too?
I’m horrified at the values this person holds, pure destruction, negativity, fear, and cowardice.
I strongly disagree with the value and actions of people like Mann, Hansen, et al, but they accomplished something (however temporary) for their cause.
I’ve never heard of Jay McGinley before and, odds are, never will again.

The frightening thing is, it was the Computer Industry that did that to him… I better get out soon!

I say step over them until the guys with the black zipper bags come to take them away. I won’t be blackmailed by suicide threats. If they want to die they should do so pronto, if they want to honestly debate about the real science, I’ll be glad to talk to them.

In a moment of insanity I actually watched this video.
The tragedy is that the guy is intelligent and articulate, but clearly in need of some psychiatric help. As for Roseanne……………………..

I left out – over a good lunch. Talk to them honestly about the real science over a good lunch.

“…where four billions of our brothers and sisters exist on 4 dollars per day or less…”
Ah well, didn’t we hear “1 Dollar per day or less” in such utterances? Now it’s 4 Dollars? After QE3 it’s probably 10 Dollars… looks to me like a healthy development. (maybe not for the US but for the rest of the world)

It gets harder and harder to “raise public awareness”.
The result is that some very worthy causes are drowned out by all the noise.

Apologies to Jerry Garcia (RIP) and the Dead
The starving guy made me think of this:
Truckin’ got my chips cashed in. Keep truckin’, like the do-dah man
Together, more or less in line, just keep truckin’ on.
Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street.
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it’s all on the same street.
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings.
Dallas, got a soft machine; Houston, too close to New Orleans;
New York’s got the ways and means; but just won’t let you be.
Most of the cats that you meet on the streets speak of true love,
Most of the time they’re sittin’ and cryin’ at home.
One of these days they know they gotta get goin’
Out of the door and down on the streets all alone.
Truckin’, like the do-dah man. Once told me “You got to play your hand”
Sometimes your cards ain’t worth a damn, if you don’t lay’em down,
Sometimes the light’s all shinin’ on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me What a long, strange trip it’s been.
What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn’t the same
Livin’ on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine,
All a friend can say is “Ain’t it a shame?”
Truckin’, up to Buffalo. Been thinkin’, you got to mellow slow
Takes time, you pick a place to go, and just keep truckin’ on.
Sittin’ and starin’ out of the hotel window.
Got a tip they’re gonna kick the door in again
I’d like to get some sleep before I travel,
But if you got a warrant, I guess you’re gonna come in.
Busted, down on Bourbon Street, Set up, like a bowling pin.
Knocked down, it get’s to wearin’ thin. They just won’t let you be.
You’re sick of hanging around and you’d like to travel;
Get tired of traveling and you want to settle down.
I guess they can’t revoke your soul for tryin’,
Get out of the door and light out and look all around.
Sometimes the light’s all shinin’ on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me, What a long strange trip it’s been.
Truckin’, I’m a goin’ home, Whoa whoa baby, back where I belong,
Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin’ home.

Maybe he could try living in a country that didn’t have these life saving services freely available. See how long you can live without food, water, shelter not through choice but because of issues outside your control.

Bill Engvall, a comedian, had the appropriate response: “Here’s your Sign!” He proposed that all stupid people should carry a sign that simply states “I’m Stupid.” Then, when we approached them to ask “What the heck do you think you’re doing?”, we might spot their sign and compassionately excuse ourselves with a simple “My apologies. I didn’t see your sign!”
It is profoundly stupid, for a carbon based life form to deliberately starve oneself to death on a planet so richly appointed with carbon based food and energy, in a quixotic attempt to convince a few billion other carbon based humans to ‘stop using carbon’. ‘Here’s your Sign’, indeed….

“After drinking nothing but water”
Did he dig a well, or is he wasting energy transporting water?

Ah.. greenies, want to reduce the population..
At least he’s starting in the right place.
Oh, how long would it take Al Gore to starve to near death ?
Methinks his mental strength would not let him 😉

Scottish Sceptic says:
May 30, 2012 at 4:45 pm
This protester is a heartless selfish zealot who cares nothing for the poor and elderly who have to pay for his ego through not only their heating bills, but in many cases through their early deaths.
========================================================================
I kind of agree with you. He does seem to just want to call attention to himself by starving himself for whatever cause he thinks will draw attention to himself, but, in the least common denominator, I think he’s just nuts!

I find the gallows humour here funny but can’t help but feel sorry for these sots. My god how low will the CAGW cult go? They use people up and spit them out. On to the next sucker who they can brainwash into getting their 15 minutes of fame and dispose of them. I was horiffied by the couple that not only killed themselves in despair but their children as well. This pales in comparison to that but I still can’t help but feel sorry for the guy because he has serious mental health issues and is just being used byt the CAGW cult. Like all cult members they are disposed of.
Yet it will be blamed on the skeptics because we wouldn’t just go along with the CAGW story that caused people to take extreme measures.
