I got this late, but this must be the most clueless thing I’ve ever seen, especially coming on the heels of the biggest ethics scandal ever in the history of Penn State. Maybe clueless doesn’t even describe it. I’m at a loss for representative adjectives.
An Ethical Critique of the Climate Science Disinformation Campaign
Dear Attendees of COP-17:
On Tuesday, November 29th, in a seminar organized by Penn State University and the University of Washington on the ethical dimensions of climate change join us to look at two issues.
One, an ethical analysis of the climate change disinformation campaign. We will examine whether this is a new kind of crime against humanity?
Second, we will look at the piratical significance for negotiations in Durban if climate change is understood to create human rights violations.

Reader may recall Brown is pretty much the whole department of the Penn State Rock Ethics Institute that previously tried to ethically link tornadoes to climate change.

Next up on the Penn State lecture series:
“A Hands-on Approach to Male Adolescent Development”. A lecture by Joe Paterno.
“Basic Practices for Integrity in Statistics”. A tutorial in curve bending by Michael Mann.
“The Virtue of Monogamy”. Guess speakers to include Dominique Strauss-Kahn and William J. Clinton.
These people have no shame.

“Uh, exactly where in the link can I find Al Gore?”
If you find it difficult linking Al Gore to climate related mitigation schemes you may have a few large gaps between synapses. Just kidding! But I do suggest you read this:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/22/world/africa/in-scramble-for-land-oxfam-says-ugandans-were-pushed-out.html?_r=1
Selected paragraphs from above article:
“But in this case, the government and the company said the settlers were illegal and evicted for a good cause: to protect the environment and help fight global warming.
“The case twists around an emerging multibillion-dollar market trading carbon-credits under the Kyoto Protocol, which contains mechanisms for outsourcing environmental protection to developing nations.”
The “piratical significance” of the climate change negotiations is not a typo. It refers to the well-known correlation between global temperatures and number of pirates. Durban negotiations must succeed to keep the number of pirates below the tipping point.
Mike Smith;
Brilliant! Still laughing, and read it three times.
First, if this Donald Brown program doesn’t present a gold plated boondoggle travel opportunity that is publicly paid for, I can’t imagine anything better. And he thinks he gets to save the world and show how to punish the pirates to boot.
Second, please note the co-oincident in timing of this “conference” and the Waxman show. This is clearly a new, well coordinated international and national political campaign for the saintliness of the team and the dishonest disregard for all life on this planet by the skeptics. The Waxman event was noted earlier today by:

Third, please also note that the US has pulled out of the UNFCCC negotiations to impose a new international tax on rich countries to pay to poor countries. Perhaps this Administration has finally recognized that there are no more rich countries, thanks in part to this Administration’s policy to already have spent all that we didn’t yet have, and can’t afford to agree to do it again.
Finally, factor in that Canada will withdraw from Kyoto very soon. That doesn’t leave many countries standing to pick up the bill. Good luck Australia. Good luck UK. Good luck Germany.
I would like to add:
This new new order global enviro socialism is dressed up as being based on science and facts.
But it’s obvious for many that this is not the case.
Actually the basis for today’s enviro socialism is more a political or ideological idea.
Ahhh, so this explains this crazy opinion piece/blog at the Guardian( no site of sanity itself I’ll admit!)

“Only Faith can solve the Energy Crisis”
Well, Nick Leeson, who gambled away £827 million and caused the collapse of the UK’s oldest investment bank, is now “active on the keynote / after-dinner speaking circuit where he advises companies about risk and corporate responsibility”, according to Wikipedia.

Guest Lecturer, President Obama’s Safe Schools Czar, Kevin Jennings, is to present a speech on Wholesome Relationships In a Safe University Setting.
Pensioners here in the UK are going to die this winter because they cannot afford the escalating food and energy price rises.
If they complain, they are committing a crime against humanity ???
Dear Anthony
I knew this could not be true so I doubly checked. Unfortunately you didn’t quite take down the correct title so I thought I would re-produce below 🙂

Sounds like an interesting gig. I wonder if they’ll discuss the very recent World Climate Report “adaptation” of the main figure in Schmittner(2011), which hides data in their “adaptation”, as also presented by Pat Michaels in his Forbes article without any mention of “adaptation” or a link to the original paper?

It’s easy to mock this sort of thing – but that is the wrong response. The Penn State Center for Climate Ethics is well funded and there are many who will welcome its message:

Secondly there is indeed an important ethical element to the climate change debate. If you accept that anthropogenic emissions of CO2 are a future problem then you should identify the real ‘culprits’.
http://www.climatedata.info/Forcing/Emissions/Emissions/CO2.html
The ten countries with the largest increase in CO2 emissions (in absolute not percentage terms) from 2000 to 2008 are: China, India, Iran, Russia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia. And where is the USA in that list? At the bottom: over that period the USA had the largest fall in emissions.
http://unstats.un.org/unsd/mdg/Metadata.aspx?IndicatorId=28
If you don’t believe that CO2 emission are a problem then this also raises ethical isues. Is it right in a world where people die of starvation to divert food to fuel for rich countries? Is it right to drive pensioners into fuel poverty to pay for inefficient wind turbines?
Don’t stand on the sidelines and sneer – joint in the debate.
Now I know who he reminds me of.

Going to stop buying their products immediately.
It sounds like they’re condemning themselves with their own criteria. Eg. disinformation campaign.
Thats OK. Politicians also whitewash themselves when they’ve been found committing misdemeanours by setting up their own “star chambers”
One time it rained when I didn’t want it to rain, so my human rights were violated and it was a crime against humanity.
“Please bring your children to the lecture. We have someone to look after them.”
instead of ranting here can someone(s) please write to Penn State????
Good one Ron!
And God willing, it will be an actual headline in the near future. Copyright noted!
“(blah) an ethical analysis of the climate change disinformation campaign. We will examine whether this is a new kind of crime against humanity?(blah)”
A question that interests me is the extent that the climate change religion has caused actual suffering – production of biofuels causing third-world hunger, perhaps. Is there any analysis available?
“climate change religion = crime against humanity” might be a meme that would propagate.
good for you Joe Bastardi…I hope your letter gets to Mr. Brown.. we have three Penn State graduates in our little enclave in Bethany Beach, Delaware and they are without a doubt the nicest, most honorable people we know and they are truly sickened by those very few who have caused so much pain for them and all of us who are their friends.
“new kind of crime against humanity?”
Gotta love the decorous question mark there, leaving the matter in doubt. Just an inquiry, donchaknow. I’m reminded of George Will’s observation many years ago that you can be sure that an essay or seminar titled “Whither incest?” will not reenforce the existing prohibition against incest.
I think you’re mistaken about that. If I recall the graph correctly, the relationship is inversely proportional. That is, more pirates = less global warming. Therefore, in order to combat climate change one needs more pirates, not less. This cause/effect relationship is clearly demonstrated by the increase in Somalia pirates and flattening, or even dipping, of global average temperature.
