Climate Craziness of the Week: Anthropogenic Girthic Warming

I would not have believed the claim if I hadn’t read it here:

So the idea is that everybody should lose ten kilos the result of which would be a drop in greenhouse emissions that would be the equivalent of 0.2% of the CO(2) emitted globally in 2007 (49.560Mt).

Good luck pulling that off. I have a proposal that may also have an impact.

Any researcher who takes public money to study global warming and produce results that dictate how the rest of us should live should give up their car and walk or bicycle everywhere.

That should have an effect.

If you lose weight you converting fat ( a carbon rich compound) into mostly CO2 and water. This will increase the green house gases. We should look at obesity as CO2 sequestation!

A quick review of the syllabus of Robert Gordon University reveals it to what we used to call a technical college in America.
These are sometimes called universities here too, but are really the equivalent of a community college that offers limited graduate degrees at the Master’s level.
First came grade inflation and social promotion for students. Now we are seeing the same phenomenon for institutions.

ENOUGH WITH “STUPID” SCIENCE ALREADY!!! Has the world of academia gone completely insane? Are there absolutely no checks and balances left in the cloistered halls of learning? Do the graduates of these “schools” actually expect to be able to get real-world jobs after being associated with professors such as these?
I think that reports of this type are absolutely ludicrous and completely insensitive. Any “university” conducting this type of “research” should be immediately disbanded. Its administration and “research” staff should be black-listed from holding any other positions of authority for life. They should also be forcibly compelled to comply with their own inane recommendations.

Robert Gordon University is in Aberdeen and is a good University.
I’ve always thought the cheapest and easiest way to solve the AGW problem…ahem…is to offer tax breaks to people who hold their breath for two or three minutes a day.
You could argue that it is everyone’s civic duty to hold their breath for one minute in the morning and one minute in the afternoon. Enthusiastic breath holders could hold for additional minutes and achieve tax breaks. The governments could set up breath holding centres to ensure quality.
The good thing about this solution is that it is low cost requires no new technology and can be easily replicated. No need for large world summits, so saving on CO2 already.

It’s another Technical College with pretentions. Seems to be successful though.
Robert Gordon University is located in Aberdeen, Scotland. Building on over 250 years involvement in education, it was granted university status in 1992. Robert Gordon University currently has approximately 15,579 students at its two campuses at Garthdee and the City Centre, studying on over 145 full-time and part-time undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Much of the university campus dates from 17th and 18th centuries.
The Sunday Times named Robert Gordon University their Scottish University of the Year 2011 and first in Scotland for graduate-level jobs. It said: “With a graduate unemployment rate that is lower than the most famous universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, plus a flourishing reputation for research, high student satisfaction rates and ambitious plans for its picturesque campus, Robert Gordon University is The Sunday Times Scottish University of the Year”. There is indeed a very strong relationship between obesity and global warming. It is simply this:
THEY ARE BOTH SCAMS!
“Obesity is a scam?” I here you say. Indeed yes. You see obesity is a trans-fat condition just like type 2 diabetes. It is caused by the poisoning of 1) Brown Adipose Tissue. 2) Cell walls adjacent to Insulin receptors. 3) Mitochondrial walls. And all by trans-fatty acids. You can check out the truth of this by reading the peer reviewed literature abstracts at tfx.org.uk. Diabetes is caused by the poisoning of the substrate underlying a chemical reaction called the “Modified Electron Transport Chain” by trans-fatty acids.
So if any fatties out there who a serious about losing weight and would like to do so it is very simple. You see (2) and (3) slow down the passage of glucose to the ATP production centres in the mitochondria. As a result ATP production and consequently metabolism are slowed down over a continuous spectrum down to more than 80% in the biggest fatties. Obesity is easy to cure for the simple reason that most body cells die off every two years and you build new ones to replace them. All you have to do is replace any trans-fats in your diet with natural cis-isomer based fats and the weight simply peels off. The best sources of such natural fats are linseed and hemp oils. Most of the junk oils in the supermarkets such as rapeseed (canola), sunflower and corn oil etc and are laden with poisonous trans-fats. So only use cold pressed AND unrefined oils. Use animal fat or olive oil for frying and roasting and for two years at least ensure that your fat/oils intake includes at least 1 tablespoonful of hemp oil (or linseed oil) per day.
After two years you will learn the sad truth about global warming and obesity. You see what will actually happen is you will become skinny as a result of regaining a normal metabolism and in consequence your personal output of CO2 will dramatically increase. You see the truth is that it is the skinnies who are the most dangerous people from the AGW perspective. The fatties are simply acting as carbon repositories and are the greenest people on the planet. In both senses of the word.
The truth is out there, the MSM is almost completely controlled on this issue in a way that makes AGWs media control seem amateurish in the extreme.

Huth, Robert Gordon University was around before you were, so it seems fair to assume you haven’t been considering reading for a degree in Scotland in your time here. Before 1992 it was known as Robert Gordon’s Technical College.
As far as the report is concerned, the domestic diet is a contributing factor to the exceptionally high incidence of heart disease in Scotland, so any excuse to persuade people to eat a more healthy diet and perhaps exercise more will be sought. Linking it to global warming is just the latest tactic. It might take a bit more than that as our globally warmed summers of recent years have changed the preferred attire from shorts and t-shirts to waterproofs and snow shovel sales have soared in winter.

The only connection between Global Warming and Obesity is that they are both scams. Today most obesity is caused by trans fatty acids which poison body functioning and lead to a reduction in metabolism. There are three basic mechanisms:
1) The poisoning of the substrate underlying a chemical reaction called the modified electron transport chain. This reaction is used in Brown Adipose Tissue (Brown Fat) to generate ADP which is used to produce heat. It is also used in pancreatic beta cells hence diabetes is also caused by trans-fatty acids.
2) The corrupting of cell walls adjacent to insulin receptors so that pores are unable to open a glucose transport into the cell is reduced.
3) The poisoning of mitochondrial walls reducing glucose uptake.
As a result of (2) and (3) ATP production and consequently metabolism are slowed down over a continuous spectrum down to more than 80% in the biggest fatties. Obesity is easy to cure for the simple reason that most body cells die off every two years and you build new ones to replace them. Arghhhh!
Asteroids (from Greek į¼€ĻƒĻ„Ī®Ļ ‘star’ and Īµį¼¶Ī“ĪæĻ‚ ‘like, in form’) are a class of small Solar System bodies in orbit around the Sun. They have also been called planetoids, especially the larger ones. These terms have historically been applied to any astronomical object orbiting the Sun that did not show the disk of a planet and was not observed to have the characteristics of an active comet, but as small objects in the outer Solar System were discovered, their volatile-based surfaces were found to more closely resemble comets, and so were often distinguished from traditional asteroids.[1] Thus the term asteroid has come increasingly to refer specifically to the small rockyā€“icy and metallic bodies of the inner Solar System out to the orbit of Jupiter. They are grouped with the outer bodiesā€”centaurs, Neptune trojans, and trans-Neptunian objectsā€”as minor planets, which is the term preferred in astronomical circles.[2] This article will restrict the use of the term ‘asteroid’ to the minor planets of the inner Solar System.
There are millions of asteroids, and like most other small Solar System bodies, asteroids are thought to be the often shattered remnants of planetesimals, bodies within the young Sunā€™s solar nebula that never grew large enough to become planets.[3] A large majority of known asteroids orbit in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter or co-orbital with Jupiter (the Jupiter Trojans). However, other orbital families exist with significant populations, including the near-Earth asteroids. Individual asteroids are classified by their characteristic spectra, with the majority falling into three main groups: C-type, S-type, and M-type. These were named after and are generally identified with carbon-rich, stony, and metallic compositions, respectively.

OK I am going bananas. My original comment has finally appeared “up-top” despite several previous searches trying to find it. There is some inconsistency in the operation of the comments system here. Many of my silly comments have not appeared but many have.
I get utterly fuming about the pseudo-scientific scams used to cause obesity and diabetes. Most of the comments on this post have been made by people who have bought into the lies propagated by the MSM. They believe that fat people are fat because they eat too much and don’t take enough excercise, they believe they output more CO2 because they are fat. [reply] Iā€™ll check the spam bin. Every comment on WUWT is checked by a real live half-awake overworked human. Thanks for your patience. TB-mod
Thanks for that. It is not necessary now I feel. There seems to be something very odd going on today and I have no idea why. The subject of the post gets me seriously wound-up and especially because so many of the WUWT readership are in a belief state with their brains switched off. It happens to us all because we can’t possibly think about everything under the sun even if we are thinking about something all of the time. Much of the time we have to take on trust what we are being told and believe it is all based on “settled science” with those behind the messages acting in our best interests. Oh were that true! Everything you see and hear in the MSM (with very few exceptions) on the subject of the post (obesity) is a BFL. The media is controlled down to the scripting and production level in many instances and deception, lies by implication and downright full blown lies are daily forced down our throats by the people who pretend expertise in these matters. The authors of this deceitful piece of profiteering propaganda are at best idiots. If you know anything at all about modern obesity it is that the obese put out less CO2 than the slim in >90% of cases. This propaganda piece has nothing to do with AGW at all, that is just a screen for the BFL. While the readers are rightly taking the mickey out of the silly suggestion they make they are still buying into the lie. That is what they want, to sell the lie of obesity. The connection to AGW is a smokescreen.

Hang on… Human fat is a long-chain hydrocarbon, right? As in, by weight, it’s mostly carbon atoms. So, by carrying “extra pounds”, we’re actually sequestering carbon. If anything, they should be encouraging us all to carry an extra ten pounds, because if everyone on the planet did that it would be around 3.5 billion tons of carbon sequestered!

Less obese people are also more active, which could mean more CO2 produced. I bet they didn’t even want to contemplate that area. A complex world needs more complexe studies than this news graber.

That’s terrible, I’d never heard of the Robert Gordon University and now I can see why if this is what passes for reseaerch there.
Even the most basic search would have shown that all CO2 emited from humans regardless of weight are carbon neutral. The CO2 has already been taken out of the atmosphere and is derived from the food they eat. The only exception to this is the increase in fossil fuels that are burned to transport obese people about or prepare the increased food that they eat.

With global warming our bodies would heat up, we’d eat less, and lose weight. The average increase in weight is a sign that the earth is cooling- we need all those extra pounds to keep warm.

I think Eco Geek is off his Lithium compounds.
I assume the “lose weight and save the planet” calculation is based on reduced consumption and fuel efficency increases for transporting lighter people. The consumption arguement might be moot due to higher metabolic rates used to reduce weight in the first place but the other factors which include transportation, smaller clothes, furniture that lasts longer, less need for medical services, etc probably offset that.
Can I get carbon credits for losing weight? I already have a certificate for one billion carbon offsets from freecarbonoffsets.com so I probably don’t need any more.

Another thing that is messing up our diet is high fructose corn syrup. The body does not recognize it as sugar, although it tastes sweet. As I recall, the liver turns it to fat swiftly.
It pays to eat as our great-grandparents ate, as much as possible. The problem is, it takes longer to prepare food the old fashioned way, and we’re all in a hurry.

Bruce Cobb

The obesity issue is an important, rather serious health issue. Linking it to “global warming” is, of course absurd, and just makes a mockery of it. People who are obese and/or even slightly overweight most likely already feel enough anguish and guilt about their condition (self-inflicted or not), and certainly don’t need more piled on.
As far as trans-fats, I don’t believe they are healthy, and we try to avoid them, but I think it has to do more with the fact that they cause inflamation which wreaks havoc with the circulatory system and other nasty things, being of the Omega 6 variety. The rule of thumb seems to be to limit saturated fats, eschew trans fats, and go to town with polyunsaturated and monosaturated fats.
Of course, it goes without saying that people should exercise more, which not only burns calories, but raises your basal metabolism rate, thus burning more even when inactive.
I believe the jury is still out about HFC syrup – I have seen both sides argued, and am not convinced either way.

Ditto – the first step in sucrose metabolism is to split sucrose into glucose and fructose, and those two join a common metabolism chain quickly. It occurred to me that maybe fructose metabolism is faster than the sucrose cleaving, so eating sucrose would lead to low concentrations of fructose, eating HFC would create a fructose spike, and I’ve read som bad things about fructose and heart disease. I don’t have time to read this now, but I just found http://www.medbio.info/Horn/Time%201-2/carbohydrate_metabolism.htm which has far more knowledge than I have, I’ll spend more time with it later.

10 kg is exactly what I lost during the last 18 months – through the only sensible way: exercise. But I’m pretty sure I emit more co2 now – all that exercise makes me consume more calories, not less!

Reed Coray
August 16, 2011 10:05 am

A quote from the article:
The team were inspired to investigate the link between obesity and global warming after reading a paper written by academics Ian Roberts and Robin Stott in November 2010 which put out a call for collective action from health professionals against the causes of climate change.
‘Dr Rolland continues: “The current climate change has been most likely caused by the increased greenhouse gas emissions, and one of the direct producers of these gases is human beings. As such, Professor Broom felt that we were in an ideal position to present our data in a way that responded to this call by Roberts and Stott.

Two points. First, I don’t know how others interpret the above passage, but I interpret it as follows: “You can get money to investigate anything provided you connect your research to the evil effects of man-made global warming.”
Second, I’ve broken the code. I now know the real goal of global warming alarmism: “Worry causes hand wringing which uses energy which induces weight loss which contributes to saving the Earth.” Now if I can figure out why the GW alarmists didn’t tell me this when they started the scare.

G. E. Pease
August 16, 2011 10:07 am

Perhaps Mrs. Obama will pick up on this for her anti-obesity campaign and link it to President Obama’s avowed war against CO2 emissions.
Never mind that skinny people who exercise a lot emit much more CO2 than obese people who exercise very little, and that there has been no global warming in the last 12 years despite a continuing increase in atmospheric CO2.

August 16, 2011 10:11 am

Hold on! Losing weight means burning mass means releasing CO2. How is this going to lower emissions, not that lowering emissions is desirable in the first place as CO2 is PLANT FOOD?
And Espen is right. When people are in better shape, they can burn through more calories by being fit and more active than being sedentary.

You have bought into the lie. Trans fats are by definition unsaturated fats. In the UK trans fats are labelled as unsaturated fats. Indeed its getting so cynical that omega Xs are more usually trans fats these days. Saturated fats are harmless. But going to town on polunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats is a recipe for obesity, diabetes,CV disease, Alzheimers, breast cancer, impotence, cellulite and much much more. Mostly unsaturates=trans-fats is the rule,
