The Heartland Institute will host its sixth International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC-6) on June 30 and July 1 in Washington, DC at the Marriott Wardman Park. Heartland will be joined in Washington by dozens of think tank cosponsors and hundreds of scientists in an effort to “restore the scientific method” to its rightful place in the debate over the causes, consequences, and implications of climate change.
The theme of the conference, Restoring the Scientific Method, acknowledges the fact that claims of scientific certainty and predictions of climate catastrophes are based on post-normal science, which substitutes claims of consensus for the scientific method. This choice has had terrible consequences for science and society. Abandoning the scientific method led to the Climategate scandal and the errors and abuses of peer review by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The scientists speaking at this conference, and the hundreds more who are expected to attend, are committed to restoring the scientific method. This means abandoning the failed hypothesis of man-made climate change, and using real science and sound economics to improve our understanding of the planet’s ever-changing climate.
Speakers include:
- Timothy Ball, Ph.D.
- Larry Bell, Ph.D.
- Alan Carlin, Ph.D.
- Robert “Bob” Carter, Hon. FRSNZ
- Christopher Horner, J.D.
- Robert O. Mendelsohn, Ph.D.
- Patrick Michaels, Ph.D.
- Roy W. Spencer, Ph.D.
- Harrison Schmitt, Ph.D.
- Willie Soon, Ph.D.
- S. Fred Singer, Ph.D.
- David G. Tuerck, Ph.D.
- Anthony Watts

Some commenters and moderators have suggested a WUWT get together of some sorts within the conference, perhaps in the evening. If interested, use the about>contact from the menu above to send me a note and I’ll advise if we have critical mass and offer email suggestions. – Anthony
Where are Evans and Nova?
I noticed one speaker is former astronaut Harrison Schmitt. I remember watching him walk on the moon. I’d love to hear what he has to say. Here’s a lovely and typical hit piece on him.
http://climateprogress.org/2011/01/11/new-mexico-climate-denier-harrison-schmitt-to-run-energy-department/
I found the link on google, and at the bottom, I got: “Block all climateprogress.org results”. Tempting.
Wiki was nicer than usual, saying, “Schmitt voiced objections to the notion of a present ‘scientific consensus’ on climate change as any policy guide.”
He’s a hero twice over.
And the organizers are committed to a snow-free climate change conference by scheduling it during the summer.
Can we indicate our interest in a WUWT sub-conference in this thread?
> Where are Evans and Nova?
Probably raising kids. At least that’s what she said last year.
> Schmitt … a hero twice over.
I met him last year at ICCC-5, he’s the only scientist who went to the moon. Very nice guy, and tolerates star-struck near-60-yr olds well. His talk was more on discovering he’s a Libertarian than focused on climate change, but that’s okay in my book.
This time high on the list is meeting Tim Ball and Alan Carlin just to thank them for all their time and the abuse received for standing by their principals.
…we should pass the hat and buy Anthony a Ph.D.!
REPLY: It wouldn’t matter, bought or earned, AGW proponents are equal opportunity critics. They diss you no matter what qualifications you have – Anthony
Thanks for the reminder, i had my hotel booked and forgot about early registration. I’m in!! I attended the 1 day event 2 yrs ago in DC and had the privilege of sitting next to Bob Carter during breakfast while he was preparing his notes for his talk. It was truly a great day for me. And then I came home to some apocalyptic TV right on on primetime, on ABC I think. What a wake up call to how the media is so “in” on this issue.

LOL!
Yeah, talk to this guy at the California Air Resources Board.

“acknowledges the fact that claims of scientific certainty and predictions of climate catastrophes are based on post-normal science, which substitutes claims of consensus for the scientific method.”
Post normal science has nothing to do with consensus arguments. In fact at the Lisbon conference the primary theorists of PNS explicitly rejected notions of consensus. The appeal to consensus was one of the problems the people who attended the conference identified as harmful to dialogue.
Perhaps one can adopt the scientific method WRT statements about PNS. There’s a hypothesis: PNS appeals to consensus. There are observations, what those of us who understand PNS say about consensus. Those observations, disconfirm the theory this conference has about PNS.
Misunderstanding the thing you want to criticize is not getting off to a good start.
Why did they schedule the conf on such an important US holiday? All the members of the Congress will be out of town.
Here is an interesting topic to be discussed at this meeting
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1390682/Plans-gigantic-lunar-ring-solar-panels-beam-energy-Earth-unveiled.html
The Japanese Scientists are planning to use the moon to reflect more solar energy to the Earth. But what will this do to the earth’s radiative balance? Do these Japanese Scientist not know that back radiation almost doubles the effect of incoming solar radiation such that their project will lead to catastrophic warming, or is it that the Japanese Scientists simply do not consider that back radiation can effective warm a hotter object (the ground) or even slow down th heat loss from the ground.
Joanne Nova and David Evans are busy raising money for the Lord Monckton Tour of Oz which kicks off next month.
> Some commenters and moderators have suggested a WUWT get together of some sorts within the conference,
By chance to practice Bluto’s coughing scene from “Animal House”; just in case it is needed?
sm;
Who would you nominate to adjudicate whether the PNS study was of adequate “quality”?
richard verney
reflecting IR doesnt slow the loss of heat??

ever wonder why a thermos inner shield is silver?
—No Lord Christopher Monckton on the List of Speakers??? Someone’s missed a trick — he’s a fantastic speaker!
Anthony,
I’ll be with you in spirit in DC.
By the way, Sir Paul Nurse (Nobel, Medicine – 2001) and Bob Ward of the
Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics have publicly
made a call in The Guardian:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/may/25/freedom-information-laws-harass-scientists
eliciting input from individuals, organizations, and institutions for the great British
Royal Society’s effort to study:
http://royalsociety.org/uploadedFiles/Royal_Society_Content/Downloads/Influencing_Policy_-_Themes_and_Projects/2011-05-12-Science-as-a-public-enterprise-Call-for-Evidence.doc
According to the Royal Society’s website:
The top name of the Royal Society’s “high level working group” ?
Phillip Campbell, Editor, Nature magazine.

Who’s Bob Ward ?

Perhaps the participants of the sixth International Conference on Climate
Change (ICCC-6) on June 30 and July 1 in Washington, DC., can find
folks who might want to answer Sir Pauls’ call to provide input and
“evidence” on “openness” and the scientific method to the
Royal Society.
I’m sure they’d appreciate it.
It occurs to me that the fight against Global Warming Inc. shifted away from Washington two years ago.
The fight is here, in Sacramento, now. So why or maybe where is it written in stone that the ICCC has to meet in DC – where your message will be ignored by friend and foe alike for the upteenth time?
Bring it here, where your friends are most put upon by the amoral global warming lobby, and your foes are least capable to effectively counteract the message.
We have medias being dismantled wholesale – begging for an angle – so they can climb off the socialist trainwreck and gain back some of their squandered credibility, with something approaching a graceful pull back. Here the media will not, can not afford to ignore you.
The Sacramento Convention Hall is waiting.
