People email me stuff. Sometimes its just too bizarre to ignore. We have another person on an “expedition” with a camera and artistic license to foist upon the world:

From Francesca Galeazzi of the disko.bay expedition, whatever the hell that is:
This morning I walked across the fresh snow with a gas cylinder in my arms, containing 6kg of CO2. I took it across the unspoiled snow field of the Jakobshavn Fjord until I found what, to my eyes, was a wonderful place.
From a little hill I could see massive icebergs impassably floating by, some of them breaking up from time to time with a loud bang. The sea below was deep grey, which made the icebergs stand up in all their beauty and fragility. The sky was a merge of pale grey and cerulean with a yellow glow just behind the skyline. Lichen and small berry plants could be felt under the powdery snow as I walked by. I thought this is perfect!
I walked to the top of the small hill, I put the cylinder down, got on my knees and opened the valve. The CO2 came out violently, freezing the air around the nozzle and producing an unpleasant whistle. When I lowered the cylinder towards the ground, the snow blow off all around me under the pressure of the air jet, almost to signify the melting of the Arctic ice shelf because of the Carbon emissions generated somewhere else.

Reading this you might think I am an evil horrible woman. I would like to reassure you, I am not! I haven’t done anything bad. because I have offset the carbon emissions generated by the CO2 cylinder, through an online Gold Standard Carbon Offsetting scheme! Cool no? This is great stuff. one can go about consciously polluting the world, wasting energy, producing tonnes of waste and abusing natural resources without feeling guilty at all!! One can simply pay somebody to compensate for his/her ‘bad’ actions somewhere else, and become Carbon Neutral!
Don’t you think this is great?

No, and I think you are beyond art, you’ve launched yourself into the great realm of anti-art with a megadose of idiocy.
What next? posing propane cyclinders with polar bears? Yes the propane and propane accessories signifies the struggle against heat the polar bears must face every day.
Hey it’s art. I have a license.

…the disko bay expedition, whatever the hell that is
It was formed to seek out Disko and prove it’s *not* dead.
Next on the list: resurrecting the leisure suit…
The words is pushed into a phase of intellectual degeneration and this is a perfect example of it. It’s going main stream now only because “degenerates” are provided with a media platform entering the “Great Age of Irrational Propaganda that serves the New Green Religion”.
The moron that has brought the “North Pole” to Copenhagen is another example.
“Craziness of the Week” covers it all right.
Thanks for publishing this fallacy.
Alan Garuba places what’s currently going on in a broader perspective.
Please read his excellent article titled “The Information Deficit”.

Whoa! That’s a great one! I like the concept.
Add one of those “atom” pictures on one side and the “don’t” traffic symbol over a windmill on the other…for those who are too dense to get it.
hunter (11:51:01) : Exactly! How much “fragility” did the berg that sank that whopping great Anglo-Irish lump of iron in 1912 possess? Other than melting when it got too warm!
Robert M. Marshall (12:15:02) : Is this not the very same vessel that got stuck at the other end of the world last year on a “see it before it’s gone” econut trip??? The name seems the same certainly.
Poor girl, it’s so sad when afflicted people cannot get the appropriate care in the community they clearly need. Perhaps she hadn’t taken her medication that day! Absolute drivel!
How did humans cause this?

DennisA (15:46:18) :
“”The UN are making themselves Carbon Neutral, (I think that means “no more soot”).
“UN leads by example, purchasing carbon credit offsets for September convention.” http://tiny.cc/Z9Hhr
They can’t even spell “solution””
It could very be that the UN is buying it’s credits from the carbon fund which owned by the chief of the IPCC.
That would be a case of conflict of interest, in other words “plain fraud”.
It’s also nice to see how the UN has it’s priorities right with all those starving poeple and no money for food supplies.
When are we going to cancel our membership to this horrible organization?
Slightly OT but definitely climate craziness from BBC Scotland and two academics who should know much better – first Dr Dave Reay from Edinburgh University, taliking about the future impact of climate change on Scotland:
“Are we prepared for more skin cancer if people go out in the sun more, are kids prepared to carry on learning in higher summer temperatures or will schools have to shut down?
The highest summer temperatres in Scotland get to are about 28C – even with their nightmare 6C increase it would be still be below typical summer daytime temperatures in most of southern Europe (and California, Arizona, Texas, Florida etc). How will our poor little children ever cope?
But worse from the Met Office’s Professor Julia Slingo who ends the article with the astonishingly arrogant statement:
“The fact that we have a few people who don’t accept the science but aren’t able to provide us with evidence of why we’re wrong, I think we should just not listen to them.”
See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/8364319.stm for full article.
As a BBC license fee payer, and taxpayer who funds the UK Met Office, I am truly disgusted by this appalling example of so called journalism and so called science. And Edinburgh University should seriously consider sacking Reay if he continues with this alarmist boll*cks in the run up to Copenhagen.
“The fact that we have a few people who don’t accept the science but aren’t able to provide us with evidence of why we’re wrong, I think we should just not listen to them.”
Hmmmmmm — methinks denial of the evidence would make her a “denier”…
James Sexton (14:07:11) :
Under the CDM, offset projects do indeed go to actually reducing emissions, as opposed to just increasing sinks.

Ron de Haan (01:42:12) :
They can’t even spell “solution””
Sorry Ron, they meant to spell it “Soultion”, as it’s nothing more than a salve for the conscience…
Yes Bill, if she had a public email address I would send her the list of the 450 skeptical peer-reviewed papers to ponder –
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/11/15/reference-450-skeptical-peer-reviewed-papers/
This is how she describes her role in her new position as the Met Office Chief Scientist:
“I am responsible for providing scientific and technical strategy; ensuring the organisation adheres to good scientific and technical standards and directing and managing research and development with the Met Office. I also represent the office, on science and technology, across government. ” – http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/board/executive_info.html
I wonder how she squares the “adherance to good scientific and technical standards” with her statement in the BBC Scotland report?
Well, this is science at work. Release a compressed gas rapidly (From a compressed cylinder. Oh I wonder how that was made?), it makes a “noise” (LMAO) as you open the valve (I wonder how that was made?) too quickly. And then the expelled gas “freezes” the air (Arround the nozzle) at the nozzle exit.
Art has no rules. (Shame they are trying to describe a scientific PoV). FAIL!
My arty friend in the UK just does not see it, and seh still used gas welding in her “art”. Go figure!
Probably this has been mentioned in the long column of responses but the CO2 in the cylinder has been taken out of the air somewhere else and re-released – there is no carbon footprint at all – she paid twice – but it does show what ignorant Luddites are getting press for.
What a waste. That was probably 50 dollars worth of CO2. That could have kept a dozen kegs of beer nicely carbonated.
Central and eastern South Africa is currently experiencing abnormal cold and miserable temperatures and rain, some places have recorded temperatures 10 degrees (C) below average.
O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg for example recorded 13 degrees maximum, when the average for this time is around 24. Snow is falling in the mountains which is unheard of in November.
Obviously the media hints towards “global warming” as the cause.
The public isn’t buying it. The freezing weather should generate some more skepticism.
It is strange, as SA should be experiencing heat and dry weather now due to El Nino. Apparently temperatures should climb next week.
Andrew P:
“And Edinburgh University should seriously consider sacking Reay if he continues with this alarmist boll*cks in the run up to Copenhagen.”
Sack him? He’ll probably get a promotion.
She’s one of the dumber ones, apparently. No affiliate link to her Gorebot scheme for offsets or anything. The good news? She’s not economically neutral here either, so she’ll fall by the wayside eventually.
You go girl. We like you.
Push out the CO2. We need plant food and wheat production is optimised at 700ppm CO2. We have a ways to go.
D’ya suppose she got a grant to do this?
