I’m pleased to announce that after a quality control review of all stations surveyed so far we are now at the 80.4% mark. 982 stations out of 1221 of the USHCN network have been surveyed. 239 stations remain to be surveyed.

A Google Earth KML file has also been created to help volunteers assist us in surveying these remaining stations to the best of our ability. I don’t expect to get all of them, but we should be able to easily exceed the 1000 station mark and perhaps reach 90% before the end of summer.
You can download the Google Earth KML file which was used to make the map above, get it -click here. [Note, if using Internet Explorer, right mouse click and choose “Save Target As..” ~ charles the moderator] It is very helpful in locating stations. Google Earth is a free download here.
For those who don’t have Google Earth capability, get it – click here, is the list of stations remaining that you can view in your browser. Both files are useful in different ways, so I suggest getting both.
Our goal is to find the few remaining “best” CRN1 and CRN2 stations. So far there have been very few of these “best” stations, 92 so far, making up only 10% of the network. The majority of those also happen to be ASOS stations at airports, and as we have seen from the MIC in Hawaii’s WSFO, ASOS stations have not been deemed suitable for climate monitoring, since they are placed for aviation purposes.
Here are the percentage breakdowns so far, plus a nice bar chart by Gary Boden showing the states that have been completed and those that need the most attention:

| Number | Percent | |
| CRN=1 | 16 | 2% |
| CRN=2 | 76 | 8% |
| CRN=3 | 205 | 21% |
| CRN=4 | 598 | 61% |
| CRN=5 | 78 | 8% |
We have identified 45 closed stations, some of which have been able to be rated because the observer remained and could show us where the thermometer was placed, or we were able to find aerial photos or maps from NWS b44 forms that showed the location.
Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia are the states with the least coverage. If you live in one of these, please consider trying to survey a station or two. Details on how to survey stations can be found at surfacestations.org
Quality control checks performed:
Volunteers and I have been busy in the past couple of weeks adding some stations from recent surveys as well as doing a comprehensive QC on the applications of ratings and the veracity of the station surveys.
Some stations that were surveyed were misidentified by volunteers, and thus have been removed and put back on the “available” list in the KML file above.
Some stations surveyed by aerial views only were misidentified, and this was made clear when when we went through QC reviews. We fixed those also, some were then correctly identified and rated, others went back on the “available” list.
I’m pretty happy about where we are now and what has been achieved. Finding the remaining best stations is the next goal. I’ll have more on that soon with some good candidates.
There will be another important post tomorrow or the next day on a related subject that needs addressing, stay tuned.

I’ve been contemplating those sites myself as the terminus of a whole string of unsurveyed stations from Kanab, Utah, northward.
We have Kanab, courtesy of David Anderson.
Be sure to check the gallery when planning, just in case.
We are headed to Glacier National Park the second week of July. Looks like the Haugan and Fortine Montana stations are on our way to or near. Will plan on making the side trips to pick them up unless someone else gets there first.
No stations in Alaska?
REPLY: There are, but we didn’t figure it was practical due tot he short summer season and great distances involved. Can you help?
Anthony
If the stations are nearish to a road that finds its way to the Anchorage area, then I might be able to.
REPLY: After posting the story about what may become the coolest summer on record in Anchorage, AK, I got to wondering where they might measure the temperature in Anchorage.
The station that appears to have the longest record is the Anchorage airport, Hansen uses it in GISTEMP. There also appears to be one at the NWS office there. How about those? Let me know and I’ll locate them for you.

According to Anthony, Mora, MN and Grand Meadow, MN do indeed require a ground survey, so I’ll do those in the next few weeks unless someone beats me to them. Hallock, MN (which is a bit too far for me up by Canada/North Dakota borders) is not on the google map either, but the survey page doesn’t show it as completed.
I did a complete virtual survey on Hallock. If you do the ground survey, go to where I indicate on the map, not to the curator’s residence. I spoke with him and he gave me the location.
I also did the survey on Grand Meadow (also a curator interview). It’s to the east of an unheated garage, as indicated.
We have nothing on Mora, and we could really use a survey of that one.
I did a quick drive through at the College Park,Md site coop id 181995 and it wasn’t at the coordinates. Also I looked it up at on the NCDC MMS and it closed 1996-04-01.
Rockwell City: 42.3969, -94.6291
RESIDENCE WITHIN AND 0.4 MI NE OF PO AT ROCKWELL CITY, IA
Storm Lake: 42.6347, -95.1694
RESIDENCE OUTSIDE AND 2 MILES E OF PO AT STORM LAKE IA
Le Mars: 42.7816 -96.1458
RESIDENCE WITHIN AND 1 MILES SSE OF PO AT LE MARS IA
I’ll stop by within the next couple of weeks; I have a meeting in Sioux City and at least Le Mars is on the road to it.
A whole bunch of the Maryland stations are now closed.
evanmjones– I would have done Mora for you months ago if I realized it was needed. The survey list page lists it as surveyed, and that’s what I was using to determine if anything around me was open (Anthony explained the oops that didn’t get corrected). Hallock does not show as surveyed on the master list. Apparently you guys have moved more to using the galleries as the master list rather than the master list. . .
Any rate, I’ll get Mora and Grand Meadow.
What I think happened was that there was once a survey for Mora but it turned out to be the wrong station so it was taken down. (Best as I can recall, anyway.)
Grand Meadow, like Hallock, has a virtual survey. Ground photos are best, though, so don’t let that stop you. Go to the gallery and you can get the precise location (also, the survey form should have exact coordinates).
For some of these sites, you can also use Google street view to get another pic or two.
Yes. Anthony, Gary, and I went through all the unsurveyed stations with a fine-toothed comb looking for those. We got quite a number of them and were able to do surveys on them.
But you have to be careful, sometimes a blurry bird feeder looks a lot like an MMTS!
GE is in a continual state of update, though, so I go through them every now and then looking for clearer images and street-level views.
GA: You will find La Mars, IA, station at 989 14th Ave SE, Le Mars, IA 51031
If you want to visit a station I often (but not always) have the means to determine an exact address. So post what you want to survey and I will see what I can do.
I can’t help with Storm lake, unfortunately.
evanmjones — I can’t help with Storm lake, unfortunately.
OK, got that one recorded and will hit LeMars on the way as promised. Re the station at Storm Lake I’ll poke about and see what I can do. Any instructions or addresses for Rockwell City?
Thx…
Has anyone expressed any interest in that cluster of five sites (six if you count a ground survey of Hallock) in the Canada/North Dakota/Minnesota borders? If Mora and Grand Meadow go well (my first tries), I would consider an overnighter to get those if it seems likely no one else is going to step up for them this summer. I’ve never vistied that part of Minnesota, so it would be an adventure as well. Telling the wife that Don Quixote is strapping on the armor again will be the amusing part. “You’re going away for the weekend to do. . .what?”
do you need any more in eastern idaho? i don’t see too many there…
Sorry, nothing on Rockwell city other than it’s a private residence and the given coordinates are 42.3969, -94.6291.
FWIW, the coordinates are on Lake St., but they could be off.
Hmm, there is a group of five or so (maybe) in my reach in Ohio. Cinci/Dayton area is where I am. I can’t use Google Earth on my machine. It is old, and I want to baby it a little further before I have to do the Old Yeller thing to it. :'( So, I would need addresses, but if you can cough those up, I’ll see what I can do for you.
Well, let’s see . . . do you got a GPS or will you be renting a car with one?

Got it. I count 12 more open stations up to the Idaho border. Any way to contact David Anderson (or anyone else who might be working on it) to coordinate our efforts?
Juan
If you will let me know where to find the forms and any other info that would be helpful for you I will try to find the station at Rocky Mount, VA; not the world’s best photographer, but I have a GPS and I reckon I can manage a tape measure. If that works out, there are other VA stations within driving distance I can get to.
No, no GPS. Do you have addresses? If not, I will see what I can do about a GPS, well I will anyway.
@mikeinappalachia and Anthony
My hubby and I will be in the Millersburg, Ohio area in August and would enjoy grabbing photos and measurements from that site.
USHCN number 335297 Millersburg, Ohio
Hmm. That’s a WWTP. Coordinates are very crude.
ERROR! ERROR! ERROR!
IGNORE THIS SEE evanmjones (11:41:44) FOR CORRECT DIRECTIONS
The sewage treatment plant is to the south of town, on the southern side of Route 83. That may or may not be where the station is located.Coordinates are 40.5095, -81.9141
HQ is in the middle of town on S. Clay St. (south of Jackson St.).
There’s also a suspicious-looking spot just west of town on Rt. 39 (noth side), just across the river, that has what looks like a big square green pool. That’s another possibility.
No, no GPS. Do you have addresses? If not, I will see what I can do about a GPS, well I will anyway.
DELAWARE, OH: No B-91 forms since 2001.
CADIZ, OH
HILLSBORO, OH
MCCONNELLSVILLE LOCK 7, OH
These are at residences, but I can’t get the addresses.
GREENVILLE WATER PLANT, OH
MILLERSBURG, OH
PORTSMOUTH-SCIOTOVILLE, OH
WAVERLY, OH
These are all WWTPs. I think I posted all the locations, except for Waverly.
Corrdinates for Waverly (39.11139, -82.97972) are accurate for that one. It’s on the very south end of town on Route 220, on the eastern side of the highway.
