Global Warming Goofiness Around the Globe

Guest Post by Bob Tisdale

A study in Germany finds senior citizens are responsible for climate change. That’s right; they’re saying it’s all because of your (or you) grannies and gramps. From down under, a BBC editor in Australia believes her country warmed more than 90 deg C (160 deg F) since 1900. And back in Europe, in response to reports that climate change is the biggest global-health threat, there’s a new paper contradicting it. One paper says climate change is the worst thing for our future health and a rebuttal paper say nope, but they’re both science fiction. And then there’s the big goofiness taking place.

GERMANY

Pierre Gosselin of NoTrickZone reports on the news story that appeared in TAZ. (See the Google translation of the TAZ article Are seniors responsible for climate change?) Pierre writes in the opening of his post Germany’s Growing Green Dictatorship: Grandmothers Putting Climate Protection Targets “In Jeopardy”!:

Not only do the hysterical global warming bedwetters want us to do it with the lights off in unheated room with all our clothes on, now they are poised to request senior citizens to leave their cars in the garage and get around in the rain and snow by foot with their Rollators.

Read the rest here.

AUSTRALIA

In her post The Green Blob expands: BBC wants Australian ratings. Their editor Wendy Frew heats Aust by 90C., Jo Nova reports on a BBC News editor in Australia who managed to exaggerate the warming in Australia by a factor of 100. The BCC has corrected the story without noting the correction, so see the WaybackMachine archived version of the story Australia has hottest spring on record as temperatures soar (very slow to load.)

Jo Nova writes:

Their new Australian Editor, Wendy Frew, accidentally revealed that while she’s good at rearranging a press release and calling it news, she is not too good with numbers.

In a BBC article yesterday by Wendy Frew titled “Australia has hottest spring on record as temperatures soar” comes the extraordinary news that Australia has warmed by 90C since 1910.

“Australia has been warming up by about 0.9C [a year] since 1910,” Dr Braganza told the BBC.

That’ll hurt tourism down under. Read the rest here.

GREAT BRITAIN

Over at Bishop Hill, in his post Doctor, get a grip of yourself, Andrew Montford reminds us of the 2009 University College London (UCL) report Climate change: The biggest global-health threat of the 21st century, and then introduces a new paper contradicting the 2009 report, Is climate change the greatest threat to global health? with authors from… Well, I’ll let the Bishop tell it:

The health lobby’s contributions to the climate debate have been at best eccentric and typically irrational. Who can forget Andy Haines’ putting the cost of carbon at $1000 per tonne, for example? Or what about UCL’s Anthony Costello telling the world that climate change is the biggest threat to global health, sentiments echoed by Fiona Godlee at the BMJ here.

It’s amusing then to see a team of geographers from, erm, UCL, among them Mark Maslin, effectively telling the health lobby to get a grip…

Read the rest here.

So we have one report telling us that climate change is the biggest threat to our future health and another report contradicting it. That’s common place. Something else, though, is goofy about it.

Any and all prognostications of future climate are based on climate models. But the climate models used by the IPCC for their reports are not simulating climate on Earth. We know that because one of the lead authors of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th IPCC assessment reports confessed that back in 2007. See the post Seven Years Ago, An IPCC Lead Author Exposed Critical Weaknesses of the IPCC Foretelling Tools. Climate models are simulating climate on fantasy planets. Rephrased, they’re nothing more than computer-aided science fiction. They are definitely not simulating the planet we live on…the one we call home, Earth.

And we’re supposed to believe the foreseeings of future health that rely on science fiction?

I wonder what Star Trek’s Dr. McCoy would have to say about the hypothesis of human-induced global warming. Something along the lines of “…worse than dead…”

THE BIG GOOFINESS

The big goofiness is, of course, the UNFCCC Climate Change Conference taking place in Lima, Peru. Political delegates from countries around the globe have gathered in Lima to try to work out a new agreement to reduce emissions of greenhouse gas emissions…in an effort to limit global warming to a value established decades ago by politicians. Keep in mind, when the UNFCCC was created back in the early 1990s, the 1st IPCC Assessment Report was inconclusive about man’s role in global warming.

So what other global-warming goofiness from around the globe have you run across lately?

I have seen enough “goofiness” from the warmist brigade to last several millennia. I propose all Lima delegates leave by starship Enterprise to ‘boldly go’ to a planet of their elected choice.
We will have William “Bill’ Shatner (BS) to get Mk IX built real soon.
Ready to get going on a rescue mission in case you change your mind – which thankfully, you demonstrate ad nauseum is absolutely impossible. Cheerio!

Nothing much, just the usual End-Of-The-World blatherings.
Is anybody reporting from Lima? I mean non-believers.

The UKMO has just claimed that 2014 will be the hottest year on record by 1.6C. Seems too early for such a claim to me and a bit too much. Perhaps that Australian BBC editor has done this report as well.

Bob, The satellites have this as a very warm year, but by no means the hottest. See http://www.drroyspencer.com/2014/10/why-2014-wont-be-the-warmest-year-on-record/ All other things being equal, I’d be inclined to go with the satellite MSU data because of its global coverage. Am I missing something?

I have to admit that, now I am a gentleman of a certain age, I do have a regrettable tendency to contribute greenhouse gases to the atmosphere somewhat more frequently than I did when I was younger. I try to blame the cat.

Rubbish.
You have contributed the same amount at the same frequency all your life, you just notice it more now. Just be a man and own up to it – the poor cat doesn’t deserve the reputation you are giving it.
A pity the Mann won’t do the same thing.

Does anyone know where to find the menu(s) for meals at the CONvention in Lima? I’m very curious to see what endangered species are being dined upon this year, at taxpayer expense.

Under every rock you find a crazy warmist. I found the Hannover bit just by entering “hannover Klima” in a searche engine – as Pierre was reporting about a climate-skeptical homeowner’s association congress in Hannover. And what do I find, the most marvelous bit of irrational lunacy. Bless their tiny minds.

I don’t know what is being said, but for the constant repetition of barista I believe that he may be blaming Australia for Global warming, with the spread of coffee machines and baristas to all coffee shops in Australia. Gone are the days when they just put a spoonful of Nescafe into hot water – or a spoon full of Camp Coffee into a cup of very hot milk.
These coffee machines are warming the planet!

I find this progression of ‘fear fables’ to be absolutely bizarre. Taller tales and more menacing conclusions. Well, If the warm folk can come up with this stuff, so can I (an admitted non-scientist). A few years ago, during a particularly cold winter. Al Gore stated (paraphrased) “Don’t you people know that global warming causes global cooling?!” Glory! The climate is self-correcting! Its true! The science really is settled. Let’s all go down to the pub, get outside of a couple of pints and enjoy a game of darts! (Or whatever they play in pubs these days.Is shove ha’penny still around?)
Its becoming very apparent that the desperation is increasing. They don’t want to debate or defend their hypothesis. Like an aggressive used care salesman, they want to close the deal TODAY – before any more true believers can change their minds.

That would be a large part of the problem… sense isn’t all that common anymore and appears to be missing completely in both the media and political “classes.”

December 4, 2014 4:29 am

At the moment one of the most prominent bits of goofiness is the claim all over the media, blogosphere and twittersphere that 2014 is set to be the warmest year ever, beating 2010 by all of 0.01C. I have commented on this at

Ghost, did they specify a particular area of Antarctica or do they imply that the entire continent is melting? Although they seem to suggest that all of Antarctica is melting, I suspect they’re talking about the Thwaites Glacier in W. Antarctica. If that’s so, I miss the point of their alarm. Its been known for a while that this glacier is melting due to geothermal activity below the ice. If that’s true, they can ‘reduce emissions’ until the cows turn blue and it won’t make a bit of difference.

The titles say it all: “UN weather agency: 2014 on track for hottest year” (Environment) and “New study explains the role of oceans in global ‘warming hiatus'” (Earth Sciences). Evidently the phys.org Environment desk is not on the same page as their Earth Sciences desk.

Bob, you said “And then the alarmists wonder why no one takes them seriously. Anyone with common sense laughs at them.”
I’m not always able to find kids educated in the US with common sense. I would like to talk with some of Tony Phillips’ Earth To Sky Calculus group and find out what they’ve been taught on Carl Sagan (et al) and critical thought, and how they apply it to the information they are fed. Dr. Phillips has an obvious reason to parrot the warmist meme until NASA allows it’s scientists to get back to common sense research without penalties. My conscience would really bother me about programming these bright young scholars with unsound science that prepares them to accept and agree that destructive global policies be imposed on their generation

“A study in Germany finds senior citizens are responsible for climate change. That’s right; they’re saying it’s all because of your (or you) grannies and gramps.”

I live in Oklahoma and crazy weather is part of everyday life. I lived through the drought and heat waves of the 1950s without air conditioning as a child and road my sled down the street for a week at a time several months later; then, that spring, I got to hide in the hall with police sirens wailing and golf ball sized hail pounding on the roof, as F5 tornadoes leveled whole communities and neighborhoods to our west.
A few years ago after a brutally hot summer with numerous 100 deg. F. days, the following winter my old home town got 24 inches of snow in one day and set an all time record of – 28 deg.F. Not much has changed. I’m, needless to say, not impressed by the panicky climate stories in the media.
