A note to longtime readers of this blog – the demise of an old friend

Many of you who have been with me from the start will recall fondly the day I was annointed to “holy” status by our local alternate weekly, The Chico Beat.

Hey, I’m a reverend!

This came about because they had a ghost writer named “green man” who made a hilarious editorial about me and the http://www.surfacestations.org project in which he wrote the famous line: “The Reverend Anthony WTF Watts and his screeching mercury monkeys…” in response to surveying the weather stations nationwide.

This is why Evan Jones (and others) refer to me as “The Rev”. It wasn’t the first time the Chico Beat published articles telling my town how wrong and misguided I am for doing this work. See also Beat Up

At the time, Surfacestations.org volunteer Gary Boden took the Chico Beat Green Man’s editorial concept and turned it into an emblem patch.

Note that Green Man’s “screeching mercury monkeys” concept isnt far off the Chico Beat’s original angry monkey logo, seen below. Personally, I thought it scared away advertisers. They once printed a newspaper in their first year, then changed to online only in the last 8 months.

Today however, I’m sorry to report that the website of www.chicobeat.com is showing this:

What is really tragic (or funny, depending on how you look at it) is the fact that this one story on my blog today will now probably give their website more hits than they’ve ever had. Be sure to click the link above to say “goodbye”.

I guess it just goes to show that a positive attitude and regular updates keep the readers happy. Gloom and doom with angry commentary has limited shelf life.

  1. Anthony,

The SAC Bee’s climate change Hot House died, and soon the latest SAC Bee blog Sierra Summit will die from the lack of visitors. I tried to help them, but not response. The clue to blogging success is posting often with information that people find interesting. You meet and exceed your readers expectation. I try to keep up, but you get there first with the most compelling stories. Congratulations!

  2. A bit OT but….

The demise of the “warming island” website promoting a new island discovered in Greenland as a result of global warming was complete with $5000 cruises for the most avid greenies.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper used it for his ‘Planet in Peril’ series. Of course it wasn’t researched for accuracy, but it made for good propaganda.

Unfortunately for Dennis Schmitt, the myth was exposed for the farce that it is and now, sadly in a way, the website is history. It is still prominently displayed on CNN’s website without retraction.

    only archived through January 2008

Good news! Dennis Schmitt is still offering cruises for the modest price of $5748…..sold out for 2008!

Now the kayakers have canceled their expedition, but consider it a success (only with AGW can being wrong be spun as being right).

I was watching British television last night wasn’t sure if it was itv or bbc but it had a bit about lewis pugh and his kayakers going up to the pole. Him standing on an ice flow saying such things as the ice is only 1 metre thick and not 3 metres as in same time 2007? Are there two sets of kayakers? Thinking about it it might of been news night highlighting the weeks news but it was still transmitted in that case without updating.

  4. I hope your blog will stay popular after the demise of the Holy AGW. Great job Rev. and mods, always a pleasure to see Watts up around here.

  5. Sir, if you’d sell a patch of the Rev’.s Screeching Mercury Monkey I’d cheerfully buy it and proudly put it on my favorite blazer. Or baseball cap. Or whatever. Respectfully, tomba
