This picture is where I’m blogging from as I write this. The roof of a parking garage in downtown Indianapolis. My laptop in the foreground, the offices of the Indianapolis Star newspaper in the background.
Digital Camera + Laptop+ Free WiFi from a local Hilton Hotel enables me to post this within a couple of minutes of taking the photo. I’m here to do a TV weather system install on the 51st floor of the Chase bank building, where they have all the TV antennas. And at night, I’m going to test a theory by doing a driving UHI transect of the city along the route you see at street level.
I’m having loads of fun with this project so far. Stay tuned.
I stayed at the Hilton at the Circle many years ago. Is that where you are?
For a great filet, get yourself over to St. Elmo’s. The address is 127 S Illinois St.
It’s a short walk from the Hilton.
Welcome to the Hoosier state, Anthony. I’m about 120 miles north of you.
And Steve’s right about St. Elmo’s. One of the best steak houses I’ve ever been to.
Anthony,
As far as the transect driving goes, I recognize that it is being done during what time you have available after completing your other work. However to minimize the influence of the ambient temperature changing over time, you will reduce that influence by conducting your survey during the high or the low. of course that will probably be around 3 pm or 3 am!
Similar study to the one you are proposing from Singapore. It finds a large UHI effect, 4 degrees C, which is about 50% of the diurnal range. It also finds a 1 degree per decade warming trend at Changi Airport.

Stay tuned? You bet I will.
This is science in action. Like how I read about it when I was a kid! Contoversial, exciting, on the edge. What a story! yer the tops in my book, Rev–and if this-all keeps up, I just may write one!
Anthony,
Love the the technology. We travel in a trailer, but never stay at an RV park with out WiFi unless there are not other options. We will be switch to EVDO on the cell network, when WiFi is not available. Instant uploads.
Anthony:
If you run into any intractable RFI problems from being in the vicinity of the TV antennas and need some help, drop me a line, as I have been through that a few times. Those RF fields can be really nasty.
Sounds like you should invest in a mobile transect UHI testing kit!
BTW, don’t be stepping too near the edge. (And be careful doing through doorways, if you get my drift.)
I’ll be very interested to see your results. I was thinking a little while back about what city would be best to detect “pure” UHI effects. My conclusion was Indianapolis — reasonably large, flat, not near large bodies of water.
Clayton B,
Interesting idea. We are plannig a cross county trip from California to Texas and Georgia, then to Canada’s Maritime, via Delaware and Boston, returning via Canada to Wyoming and then back to California. However, we try to avoid city traffic when ever possible with the trailer in tow. Might pick some select cities and do some late night runs with just our tow vehicle.
For UHIs, Only
We have practiced what we preached,
A consensus has been reached,
Peer reviewed by all our pals: we have discussed it.
And if you have any reason to mistrust it,
We’ll adjust it!
TOBs and UHIs,
You can holler to the skies,
Our methodic’s far too precious to entrust it.
And you have any data to confust it,
We’ll adjust it!
Realclimate is our sacred space,
Where we put them in their place;
Mac and Watts are worthless bums and indiscrete, too.
And should we find ourselves unable to defeat you,
We’ll delete you!
