Wrong, New York Times, Nepal’s Tragedy Wasn’t Caused by Climate Change

The New York Times (NYT), in its article “Climate Change Raises Risk of Disasters Like Nepal Floods,” claims that climate change increased the risk of the catastrophic glacier collapse and flooding in Nepal by thawing permafrost and destabilizing the mountainside. This is false. The best evidence suggests the disaster was primarily the result of a complex cascade of geological failures and human infrastructure vulnerabilities, not proof of a climate crisis.

The scenes from Nepal are heartbreaking. Entire communities were devastated as millions of tons of rock, ice, mud, and water thundered down the Langtang Lirung valley. Hundreds are dead or missing, roads and bridges have been swept away, and the landscape has been permanently altered.

When disasters of this magnitude occur, journalists should resist the temptation to immediately assign blame before the evidence is fully understood.

The NYT did exactly the opposite.

Even within its own reporting, the paper admits scientists are “still determining the exact cause” of the catastrophe and that research could take months. Despite this acknowledgement, the NYT nevertheless frames the disaster as another consequence of climate change from the headline onward. That is not reporting. It is climate crisis narrative promotion.

“Climate change is heating up the Himalayas and supercharging the risk of disasters like the deadly flash flooding in Nepal and Tibet,” says the NYT, which quotes one researcher saying, “‘There’s a very straight link between climate change and these types of disasters.’”

Yet just a few paragraphs later the article quotes Newcastle University geomorphologist Stuart Dunning, “I don’t think we can simply say this is a result of climate change.”

That caution should have been the headline. Instead, it was buried.

Dr. Roger Pielke Jr.’s analysis of the event, “What Actually Caused the Nepal Disaster,” reaches a much more measured conclusion. The immediate trigger appears to have been an enormous bedrock collapse beneath the glacier, which destabilized the overlying ice and produced a massive rock-ice avalanche. The resulting debris flow raced downstream at extraordinary speed. That is fundamentally a geological process, not an atmospheric or climate-related one. More importantly, much of the destruction was amplified by human decisions completely unrelated to climate.

Roads, bridges, hydropower facilities, and communities had been constructed directly within vulnerable river valleys and debris-flow pathways, areas where floods have hit in the past. Infrastructure occupied locations long known to be exposed to landslides and flash floods in one of the most geologically active mountain ranges on Earth. Those choices dramatically increased the disaster’s consequences.

In other words, the event was catastrophicly worse than it might otherwise have been had people and governments not placed expensive infrastructure and growing populations directly in the path of natural mountain hazards. That is a very different conclusion than “climate change caused it.”

Ironically, the NYT itself provides historical context that weakens its central narrative. The article acknowledges that glacier failures have occurred dozens of times in the China-Nepal border region since 1900.

That matters far more than their click-bait headline.

Since these events occurred repeatedly for well over a century, long before human greenhouse gas emissions rose, this event cannot automatically be linked to modern greenhouse gas emissions and human induced climate change. Mountain glaciers fail for many reasons, including gravity, unstable rock formations, earthquakes, heavy snowfall, freeze-thaw cycles, and natural slope failure.

The Himalayas are among the youngest and most tectonically active mountain systems on Earth, caused by when the Indian Plate slammed into the Eurasian landmass. Landslides are not unusual there. Neither are rock, snow, and ice avalanches. The NYT also acknowledges that scientists initially suspected a glacial lake outburst flood before satellite observations showed no overflowing lake was involved.

That illustrates an important lesson: early assumptions after disasters are often wrong.

Unfortunately, that lesson was not applied to the climate narrative. Instead of waiting for investigators to complete their work, many media outlets including NPR, the New York Times, the Associated Press immediately declared the disaster another example of climate change. Once again, the conclusion came before the evidence.

There is another glaring omission. The article briefly notes that Nepal’s warning systems were not designed to detect this type of rapidly developing debris flow. That is a practical issue policymakers can actually address and should.

Improved geological monitoring, better hazard mapping, stronger infrastructure design, and avoiding construction in known debris-flow channels will save lives regardless of future climate conditions. Those are the real solutions. Ending fossil fuel use will not mitigate or prevent future avalanches, but it would hamper recovery efforts and infrastructure improvements.

The tragedy in Nepal deserves careful scientific investigation, not instant political messaging. Good journalism follows the evidence wherever it leads. In this case, the evidence points first to geology and human exposure to natural hazards, not to climate change. The New York Times should have let science finish its work before declaring the verdict. Sadly, the “publish first, ask questions later” method seems to be the norm these days when it comes to climate change related news.

It could have, the real climate change that is. Over millennia, freezing, thawing, precipitation etc. could have been a factor in causing the rocks to collapse. See that lovely graph? 2,718 randomly selected papers. 19 explicit endorsement with quantification, 409 explicit endorsement without quantification, 417 implicit endorsement (they didn’t actually say so), 1,869 no position 4 rejections in total. Then the used the number of rejections to get to 99%. The ones that took no position ended up being proxies for endorsement.

There is no empirical evidence that CO2 has a significant effect on climate. However, the title of the paper tells all that is needed to file it in the round file. The initiating rock/ice slide occurred high in the Himalaya mountains where it rarely if ever gets above freezing. If by “climate change” you mean increasing atmospheric temperature occurring during recent decades, climate change could not have altered the risk of this event.

USGS initially reported a 4.4 earthquake, then upgraded to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake at that time at that spot. USGS says later analysis of nearby measured long period seismic waves showed it was caused by the enormous rock collapse on the mountain under the glacier, rather than causing the rock collapse. Now confirmed by satellite imagery. That is a LOT of rock falling over a thousand meters into the valley below. Nothing to do with global warming; rock, not permafrost.

Now, correct me if I am wrong (sarc), but generally ice melts into water when temperatues rise above 0C.
And the process of freeze/thaw causes further fragmentation.

ERA5 is a fiction. The closest actual measurement station I can find to Langtang Lirung in GHCN is Kathmandu, and that one hasn’t gotten measurably warmer since 1989 in summer Tmax, and about 1998 in winter Tmax.

Switzerland and Norway have similar risks because of their geography. They deploy geologists to identify unstable glaciers or slopes then monitor them. If deformation is rapid, they install instruments for real-time monitoring so they can evacuate people well ahead of a catastrophic landslide or glacier collapse. Geologists have been warning about the risk in the Himalayas for decades. Maybe those countries will take it more seriously now.

Nepal Floods Caused By Bedrock Failure | NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

This is a totally natural bedrock collapse in a highly unstable geological region.

Has happen probably millions of times before, and will happen again, probably millions of times more..

It may not have collapsed now if there were not so much glacier on top of it, but it would have collapsed at some time. !

Evidently “the” False Prophet might be referring to body of outspoken false presenters or organisations (according to at least one source). I wonder if Dr. Mann knows that there are about 530,000 rock slides in mountain chains each year. It’s the way valleys get filled in. I expect there are not many in the east’s Appalachians any more as the valleys are pretty full and the mountains are not as high as when they were first formed about a half a billion years ago.

Actually even rockslides of this size are pretty common – but they usually don’t hit a lake or don’t drop vertically and therefore go unnoticed when there is no bodycount.

I finally got around to watching a couple of Shawn Willsey’s videos on the topic, It looks like bedrock failure leading to the collapse of a cliff that had a glacier atop. there was more ice in the valley, and possibly not much changed over a few years. The release of potential energy to kinetic melted all the ice, the downward flow picked up water already in the valley.

Not sure which slope this happened on, but one slope rises 5500 meters in in 60,000 meters horizonal. That is classified as a steep slope (west slope). Southern slope is too steep to have people climb it.

Yep, the Himalaya range are mountains with an infinite number of accidents waiting to happen. I spent a lot of time there in the mid to late 1990s. Vast swathes of steep, loose rock, rubble, hanging glaciers, and of course thousands of relatively recently formed glacier lakes all help constitute a precarious land! Add to this seismic activity, and really it’s all a recipe for disaster, especially in a developing nation in which there are few, if any controls on building and development. Roads in particular, are a nightmare – especially when travelling by over-crowded buses🫣. Sometimes it’s plain to see where huge chunks of road have collapsed into the ravine several thousand feet below…..no roadside barriers either!
In 2006, a huge serac (chunk of ice) carved of the hanging glacier on Ama Dablam (probably the most photographed mountain in the range, apart from the Big One), completely wiping out climbers below. That collapse was apparently caused just by gravity. Those mountains are constantly on the move, so extraordinarily massive rock, ice, mud and snow avalanches are common – always have been!

1 gramme of ice falling 1000 meter gains 9.8 Joules in energy. To melt that one gramme of ice requires 80 calories, 350 Joules to melt at 0 plus some to warm the ice to 0. A bit short we are, I believe.

More likely a sub-glacial lake has been building up for years, held back by an ice dam formed by the lower part of the glacier tongue. That dam gave way, perhaps do to tremors, and the lake emptied itself taking the ice dam and assorted rock debris with it. Lake Missouli comes to mind.

Ed, most of the rock fall was, umm, rock. So all the friction in the rockslide produced a valley debris flow that did not appear to have chunks of ice.

One of Willsey’s videos, “Nepal Disaster Update: Where Did All the Water Come From + A Second Landslide?” addresses these issues. Please take the time to watch it. There is no evidence of a glacial lake – for the initial event. There is concern that a new lake may form and overflow at the site of the second landslide. On my first visit to Yellowstone, part of a 2,700 mile bicycle tour, I spent some time at Quake Lake, formed the landslide triggered by the 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake. It still looked rather fresh when I was there in 1974.

Paul: My favorite exercise in my high school physics book helped connect physics to everyday life (with a dose of spherical cow or other approximating).

It was something like “Water flowing over Niagara Falls drops 55 meters. Neglecting evaporation or other energy conversions, how much will the water warm?”

It was a good exercise in dimensional analysis and helped further show how physics explains the real world, something that had already attracted me to the field.

A similar event occurred in an Alaskan fjord last summer when a mountainside at the end collapsed along with some glacial ice creating the second highest waver, near 1,600 feet, ever recorded in human history. The wave proceeded down the widening fjord stripping trees from both sides as it went on steadily decreasing in height. No one lived in the stripped areas and no one was killed or injured. The fjord is a popular tourist sight normally visited by cruise ships and private boats during summer but the wave occurred before 6AM when there were no such boats present.

What is striking is the advocacy of phlogiston and efforts to refute is are remarkably similar to the advocacy of human caused climate change and efforts to refute.

It took over 150 years for science to advance from that special case of alchemy to a more modern science of chemistry.

Since 1998, Nepal has received well over US$100 million of international aid to develop flood monitoring/early-warning systems in the areas prone to such hazards. The UN, in cooperation with governmental and quasi-governmental bodies, consultants and wannabe NGOs successfully spent donors’ funds for modeling workshops, capacity-building, vulnerability assessments, building resilience, community empowerment, social inclusion, gender studies etc. However no properly functioning monitoring/early-warning system has been ever created. From what I hear, in the aftermath of the recent event, some donors have already committed another US$50 million to cope with the challenge. Well-well…”

Watching the videos of the Nepal hybrid flood/debris flow event I think there is way too much water involved to be simply glacier ice (some minor permafrost ice?) falling into a river valley. The most probable scenario is landslide damming of the river, build-up of a temporary lake, then either simply toping the debris dam, or more probable, another landslide splashing sufficient water against the debris dam to cause catastrophic failure and tremendous, and rapid, water flow. That scenario has been directly observed in similar settings, and the proof is whether there was significant river flow decrease before the flood arrived.

The timing from seismic signal to the wave that took out the border crossing does not allow for the time for a lake to build up behind a landslide.

One thing to keep in mind is that as the flash flood roars down the valley at over 100 mph or whatever, the leading wave will be scooping up all the water it overtakes.

Maybe an earlier landslide built a dam, then the later landslide, that registered as an earthquake participated in the dam destruction and water release. In all of the videos I never saw a 100 mph water flow, that velocity was calculated from a scenario. I still say it was an extremely large amount of water, suggesting a temporary dam.

Landslides are not unusual there. Neither are rock, snow, and ice avalanches.

Consider what would happen if the climate were to start cooling. The glaciers would start growing and could temporarily dam the river, eventually failing and producing something like the Channeled Scablands of Eastern Washington state. If there are hanging valleys, a typical characteristic of glaciated terrain like Yosemite, those re-animated glaciers could grow to fill the tributary hanging valleys — until they reach the precipice and break off and fall to the floor of the main river. The river valley would actually be at increased risk of such events until such time as the main river is filled with glacial ice.

As Anthony points out, the people are building in high-risk areas that are prone to all kinds of geological catastrophes irrespective of whether it warms, stays the same, or cools. Lacking integrity, the ‘news’ media blames the process that best supports their agenda, without regard for the facts.

There are other possibilities as to the cause, and I thank Gaia for them.
Were it not for glaciers leaving the mountains, we would have miles high ice and snow at altitudes where we cannot breath and no potable water.

Fatigue limit. Stress fatigue. Stress fracture.
An arm of the Antarctica ice mass broke off and “climate change” was screamed.
That arm forms and breaks off on a cycle of 100-200 years.
What happens? Snow and ice accumulate. The mass increases. The ice is unsupported and overhangs water. As the mass increases, the ice approaches its fatigue limit and breaks. Splash.

Glaciers are also ice. The slowly flow downhill. But there are also overhangs where the ice extends beyond the ground beneath. It does not take a temperature change to cause a stress fracture. Just more snow and ice.

There are reports that an unstable surface beneath the ice contributed. That is not the point of this post. There is no control knob. This is not the first, nor the last time something like this will happen, regardless of the change in temperature from 1850.

If I had time, I could speculate on other causes and/or contributing factors.
I do not have time. I am SME involved in failure review. The glacier would be fascinating, but so is my job.

You can’t go far in the mountains without seeing the aftermath of major mass wasting events. Some are “young” but most are older than a few hundred years, judging from how fresh and lichen covered the resulting talus is. It is simply what mountains do. Especially young high actively growing mountains. The fact is that all cliffs are surrounded by vast talus fields. most of which are the result of catastrophic rock failure. The volumes of many I’ve seen are on the scale of the recent Himalayan event. Once again, activists are trying to convert a constant earth process – geological weathering – into the villain for today’s headline.

In 1974 I witness an impressive mass wasting event. Up near Mt Whitney, extending east from the “Needles”, is a ridge of pinnacles called (sorry) Pinnacle Ridge. Our party of three was on its way up the Mountaineer’s Route to make camp at Iceberg Lake, and then to start up the East Face Route later in the afternoon to have a planned bivouac on the ledges at the start of the Fresh Air Traverse. We were just entering the canyon which has the Pinnacle Ridge as the south wall when we heard some loud booms. About a mile up canyon one of the pinnacles started heeling out into space, then fell free for about 500 feet to smash onto the talus apron. In a few seconds a tremendous roar swept on us. A wall of dust filled the canyon, and we were immersed within minutes. It took us about 30 minutes to get to the impact area. I could only guess where the just deposited talus was, it all looked the same! The rock that fell was about 50X30X15 meters, call it about 50,000 tons. Anyway, as a fledgling 19 year old mountaineer I was impressed.

The NY Times is hardly alone in quickly attributing this disaster to climate change since Canada’s ever-alarmist CBC was almost as quick to join the blame game and assure its audience that the planet could expect more of the same as a warming world unlocks enormous volumes of water currently held back by ice walls and the like. Except Canadians have learned to dismiss such claims with a yawn and go on with life depending largely on fossil fuels as does the rest of humanity

Pottsdam broke down how a massive section of high-altitude bedrock and hanging glacier sheared off, generating the energy equivalent of a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, obliterating the Gyirong border crossing, and unleashing that devastating debris flow down the Trishuli River valley.

One point on a graph is not a trend…. seems like lots are trying hard to make it one.

Mountain glaciers do not fail, the glaciers are always growing from new snowfall on top, glaciers are always thawing, they deliver the water to the many streams and rivers, glaciers are always breaking off at the tails of the glaciers, this is true of advancing and retreating glaciers, the breaking off is not any kind of failure, this is the natural way glaciers work. Glaciers push rock and carve pathways, that is how they work. All this is dynamic and always changing, mostly natural, if humans build a dam or whatever, this may influence the natural flow of the ice and water, a dam can prevent flooding, above or below the dam, a dam can make flooding worse, above or below the dam, natural large events can take out dams or even create new natural dams. Humans do have influence, but humans do not control nature, humans must adapt, we should study and learn and become better at adapting. The glaciers are going to flow and break off, they do that when they are advancing and when they are retreating, some events when ice breaks off will be large enough to cause disasters. That glacier, involved in this disaster, has likely advanced and retreated, over that same terrain many times and likely caused a massive ice break off each time, and will likely do that forever in the future. The changes each time may influence the future events, making a next event less or more significant. If CO2 has any influence, it possibly could change the timing of some of these events, but the events have always happened and will always happen.

Back to Climate Change, Climate has always been naturally changing, Climate will always be naturally changing, Climate is naturally changing now. Someone or some many, suddenly decided that all natural climate change had stopped, that climate had suddenly achieved a static equilibrium, all factors that have always caused natural climate change had stopped, now any change to the “newly defined natural static climate” was a man-made change from the new static normal and any change was bad and must be corrected. That is like driving a vehicle down a rough road, suddenly freezing the state of all the internal parts of the car and declaring all the dynamic motion after the freeze point is a deviation from normal, even though the rough road is somewhat different, the vehicle response must be made to match the static freeze point.

Most natural disasters in modern times are not as bad for humans as historic natural disasters that were similar. We now have energy and machines and knowledge that have reduced the deaths and injuries from natural disasters by huge amounts, even when the numbers of humans who live in disaster prone regions has increased by orders of magnitude. Systems for early warning and rapid evacuations to higher ground can and does save lives and injuries, building on higher ground, out of the path of past disasters can and does save lives, green energy scams have used up trillions, done more harm than good, and wasted funds that could have been used for common sense, life saving, projects.
