This is in addition to the forensics report that I had done by the JGAAP folks here: Forensic analysis of the fake Heartland ‘Climate Strategy Memo’ concludes Peter Gleick is the likely forger

by Joe Bast (via Fakegate.org)
The Heartland Institute today released more evidence that Pacific Institute President Peter Gleick was the likely author of a fake “climate strategy memo” that Gleick originally claimed came from a “Heartland insider,” and later said he received “in the mail” from an anonymous source.
Heartland released a computer forensics report, conducted by Protek International, which states: “We conclude that the Memo did not originate on the Heartland System. It was not created on the Heartland System and was never present there prior to its February 14 posting online.”
The new report contradicts disgraced climate scientist Gleick’s claim to have received the memo from someone affiliated with The Heartland Institute and adds to a growing body of evidence pointing to Gleick’s guilt.
A month ago, Juola & Associates, the premier provider of expert analysis and testimony in the field of text and authorship, said “it is more likely than not that Gleick is in fact the author/compiler of the document entitled ‘Confidential Memo: 2012 Heartland Climate Strategy,’ and further that the document does not represent a genuine strategy memo from the Heartland Institute.”
Heartland Institute President Joseph Bast said: “The Protek International forensic report is one more piece of evidence that Peter Gleick created the fake document with the intent of defaming us and the scientists we work with. He and his co-conspirators are so desperate to discredit anyone who disagrees with their alarmist views on man-made global warming that they are willing to lie, steal, and even defraud their own friends and allies in the media.”
Bast added: “We once again call on Gleick to make a full confession, and on the Pacific Institute and its allies to stop defending Gleick and his unethical and illegal conduct.”
Background:
On February 20, Gleick, a prominent climate scientist, confessed to being the anonymous party who obtained confidential corporate documents from The Heartland Institute and circulated them along with a document titled “Confidential Memo: 2012 Heartland Climate Strategy.” While confessing to using fraud to obtain the stolen documents, he claimed to have received the “climate strategy” memo anonymously in the mail.
Since “Fakegate” occurred, ThinkProgress, Greenpeace, 350.org, and other radical environmental groups have been using the stolen and fake documents to attack Heartland’s corporate donors and the scientists who work with it.
The Protek investigation was conducted by Protek co-founder Daniel Bellich, a 27-year veteran of the FBI and former supervisor of the Chicago Division’s Special Operations Group, and Keith G. Chval, former chief of the High Tech Crimes Bureau of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and president of the Chicago Chapter of The American Society of Digital Forensics and Electronic Discovery. Both men signed the report on April 20, certifying they would swear to its findings in a court of law.

A couple more analysts and we can declare: “The scientific consensus is that Gleick is the forger. Anyone who says otherwise is a denier.”
So, we now have the proof we’re dealing with criminals. What’s new.
Charge this bozo with fraud, or stop carping.
Gleick you are a fraudster and a liar. Go ahead sue me!

Very good 🙂 We should all hold on to that thought…
This week’s High Country News has an item dated April 16: “When Peter Gleick fell, California’s water world lost big”. The full article is subscription-only.

News – From the April 16, 2012 issue by Matt Jenkins
“updated 4/17/2012 On Feb. 14, an anonymous source released internal documents from the Heartland Institute, a conservative Chicago-based nonprofit that casts doubt on global warming science, to more than a dozen climate bloggers. The documents revealed Heartland’s major funders, including the Charles Koch Foundation and many large corporations, detailed a nearly $1.6 million program to pay scientists to challenge the International Panel on Climate Change’s findings, and ostensibly exposed plans for a high school curriculum skeptical of manmade climate change. “If these documents are real, they revealed the desperate efforts of a fringe denial group to deceive children and ruin their future,” wrote Joe Romm at Climate Progress. Most of them are real; the authenticity of parts of one remains uncertain. But the leak was overshadowed six days later by another scandal: Peter Gleick, president of the Oakland, Calif.-based Pacific Institute, an environmental and global security think tank, admitted on Huffington. . .”
The worst crime a scientist can commit is to lie. Unfortunately “climate scientists” have more than their fair share of liars, all lying through their teeth and fabricating evidence to keep their gravy train running.
Peter Gleick is worse than despicable. He deserves criminal prosecution.
“Once again, more bald guys who are AGW alarmists.”
It’s the money. I’d bet someone’s ranch (never use your own money) that Gleick, Mann, et al., the ones most vocal and nasty, are reacting so because they themselves or their orgs are taking money from “Big Oil” and finance and their crony NGOs. How likely is it that Mann or his institutions NEVER received moolah or “sponsorship” or “honoraria” from BP or Royal Dutch Shell? Do those businesses only subvert European scientists?
The shrinks call it “psychological projection.”
When are criminal charges going to be laid?
don’t snivel, little heartland – the big bad boy left the playground ages ago.
There sure will be some very interesting bar conversations about Gleickian screwups in the evenings at Heartland’s ICCC-7 in Chicage from Sunday night May 20th thru Wednesday morning May 23!!!!
I look forward to them.
John
Next step, sue Gleick. Or shut up about this.
Hope to see you there, John. If WUWT readers haven’t yet registered to attend Heartland’s Seventh International Conference on Climate Change, you can register at the link below:

As a lurker on this site and looking at many of the posts above seem to agree with me, but unless something is going to be done about it, stop whining move on and talk about the science. The constant vilification of Gleick is impotent if no action if forthcoming, and to continue, as one user above wrote, to carp on about it has a certain air of desperation about it. Heartland should sue or STFU about it, because frankly the whining is getting tedious. Gleick has dubious scruples, if all this is going to amount to is incessant name calling then you just fall into the trap of distracting from the core issues at hand. Sorry to be so negative, I respect this site and a number of its contributors but this is just pointless unless there is going to be a bite with it.
Oh my god, Admad, that video made me cry laughing. I hope that gets shared widely.
OMG Admad – that video/song made me cry laughing. I hope it gets shared around lots!
I have a lot of sympathy for Heartland as victims of this fraud, but frankly I’m losing patience – they need to stop protesting and actually sue the guy, otherwise it’s pretty much an empty gesture, and largely a waste of time & energy.
On a side note, sometime ago, I posted a comment on Heartland’s blog (on their story about them asking Oxford not to encourage Gleick to speak at the Amnesty event) – and this comment has never appeared.
My comment pointed out that
1. Gleick was due to speak at a water security conference at Oxford the week before the Amnesty event.
2. The water conference appeared to be an official Oxford University function (unlike the Amnesty event which I don’t think was)
3. That in the conference agenda materials, it stated that Gleick was President of the Pacific Institute, and seemed to suggest he was appearing in that capacity (suggesting his suspension/leave-of-absence is either over, or never took effect in the first place)
Here is the agenda for the conference:

Note: Monday April 16th – 15:00-17:00 session:
“Dr Peter H. Gleick, President and Co-founder, Pacific Institute, USA Peak water and peak energy: implications for security”
Here are the slides from Gleick’s speech at Oxford – note, hosted on an Oxford University URL:

Here’s Gleick’s tweet about speaking at the Oxford water security conference

I’d also like to add, this forensic examination by Protek was first mentioned and briefly quoted almost a month ago (although the release of the entire report is new), see: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/04/03/update-on-fakegate-what-we-know-so-far/ “A thorough forensic analysis of Heartland’s computers (and those owned by Heartland’s president and his spouse) by Protek International concludes “the Memo was not created on Heartland’s computer systems and never existed there, or within Heartland’s email systems, prior to its posting online on February 14, 2012.””
“Peter Gleick@PeterGleick
At #water security conference in Oxford. Half of Britain officially in drought. But it’s raining. Gave talk on #peakwater, energy, security.”
Hahaha! First there was the Gore Effect, now we may be seeing the emergence of “The Gleick Effect”.
Update: My comment seems to have now appeared at fakegate.org – thanks HI. (I did check a day or so ago, and it hadn’t then).
Gleik lies. [snip – generalization not supported]

Jim Lakely,
Yes, we should get together!
John
Sounds like Heartland is doing all their homework in preparation for the legal business to come. Good luck!
On earlier thread on Gleick, some legal expert said that Heartland is getting the best legal advice available, by specialists in this sort of thing, and that they know what they’re doing in the tactics they’ve followed (by not suing yet and not seeking a criminal indictment).
Agree with Cuthbert. If this document is going to be ammunition for a court case, shouldn’t it be “kept dry” until the actual engagement? If it’s not going to be used, it’s pointless.
The establishment has no conscience and still holds all the power. Moral appeals have zero effect; a court case that requires them to spend lots of money will have some effect. Their behavior will only change when the cost/benefit ratio inverses.
