Friday Funny #2

Oh this is rare, two Friday Funnies. This one is still rooted in the same humor sources as the new cartoon by Josh posted here.

Now you see it…94,910 people on board (last night ~11:30PM PST)

Now you don’t…73,010 people on board (today ~9AM PST)

And those two guys look so happy about “Liftshare week”, but I digress.

It seems that there was a quality control problem, which is what I’ve always said is the biggest issue in climate science.  [UPDATE: They definitely had to purge some 20K+ in people numbers. This is confirmed independently here by Richard North of the EU Referendum blog in the UK, who noticed well before I did.]

When I can be signed up, along with Lord Monckton and James Delingpole (see the top image) along with Osama Bin Laden, Elvis Presley, the late Michael Crichton, and Nessie the Loch Ness Monster, you know you’ve got a QC problem.

Actually, there is another gaff. The “Learn” logo is stupid. (A) Everyone knows you learn nothing from watching television, and (B)…. Rabbit Ears???? Really???? It’s 2010 people!!!! How many even know what those are?????

  2. Richard Tol says:

Lukewarmers, skeptics and deniers are known for their total lack of humour. They would never sign up to 10:10 just to poke fun at them.

REPLY: For the record, I did not. – Anthony

  3. Richard111 says:

Someone should tell those nutters that cutting too much CO2 means oxygen, the stuff you breath to stay alive, will get cut in the long run.
This 10:10 stuff seems to be a mutual suicide plan. I certainly ain’t joining.

  4. rc says:

I think the 73k number is for the UK only when you pull up a UK news story (http://www.1010global.org/uk/2010/10/jadore-1010-paris), the main global page is showing over 103k (http://www.1010global.org/).

REPLY: Both images are for UK->People URL http://www.1010global.org/uk/people

As I highlighted with screencaps last night on this thread:

    http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/10/07/frannys-guilty-pleasure/

They definitely had to purge some 20K+ in people numbers. An this is confirmed independently here:

Actually its the Warmist Fanatics who are known for their total lack of humor. Who can afford to laugh when “OMIGOD THE WORLD IS GOING TO END!!!!!!”

  6. H.R. says:

    4. “Get help…?”

Yup. The 10:10ers could use some professional help, if ya’ know what I mean.

  7. FedUp says:

Lukewarmers, skeptics and deniers are known for their total lack of humour

And Warmists are known for making brazen, unfounded statements.

The 10:10 logo seems to be ‘The Age of Stupid’.

My bet is that phrase will come back to haunt them.

  8. ZT says:

Perhaps ~20k people were detonated for unsuitable thoughts.

…and a shot at the first “hide the decline!” comment…

  9. rc says:

Oh and did anyone read their ten tenets?

    http://www.1010global.org/global/about/ten-tenets

“4. Successes are celebrated, rather than failures highlighted, so as not to discourage people/organisations from signing-up for fear they will be criticised for failing to achieve 10%”

I think they broke at least three of their ten tenets with No Pressure.

  10. Janice says:

“Lukewarmers, skeptics and deniers are known for their total lack of humour. They would never sign up to 10:10 just to poke fun at them.”

I know what you mean, Richard. After all, we didn’t find “No Pressure” funny at all. That proves we have no sense of humor.

Elvis has now left the blog . . .
    hehe

  11. Stu says:

“Lukewarmers, skeptics and deniers are known for their total lack of humour”

  17. meemoe_uk says:

So what are they doing to get that curious collection of sign ups?
Have they just got a program which polls google for famous\popular names that have spoken on climate science and dumps them in the ‘on board’ list?

I hope some of AGW gang who are in it just for the goverment hand outs are busy in their spare time writing ” Confessions of a AGW propaganda agent – a down and dirty guide to 20 years of every underhand trick we were told to try “

  18. Just The Facts says:

The gentleman in the first screen capture in the article above, who is wearing the orange cap, looks quite serious. All of the other pics that 10:10 uses as their “Join Us” images are of smiling individuals. I wonder what type of demographic the gentlemen in the orange cap is intended to attract…

    Dear Mr Wood

Thank you for your email to the O2 press office.

Along with 100,000 members of the public, leading businesses, schools and universities, local authorities and NHS Trusts, O2 supports the aims of the 10:10 campaign. We acknowledge our responsibility to the environment and are committed to reducing our carbon emissions both as an organisation and in society as a whole. 10:10 is an independent organisation and we don’t ask for editorial control over the content of its campaigns.

    Kind regards

    Sarah

    @Richard Tol

‘Lukewarmers, skeptics and deniers are known for their total lack of humour. They would never sign up to 10:10 just to poke fun at them.’

don’t be a t’ol. And disregarding the obvious fact of trying to poke fun at “Lukewarmers, skeptics and deniers” for not being fun, but what fun is it to sign up to something you have a right to sign up to but would be deleted for doing just so because some hobnob t’ol has decided by presumption you wouldn’t sign up to something like it?

Pointing out that whomever can sign up who ever, now that’s poking fun at someone’s lack of keeping their own system in order. :p

We are soooo blessed. These poeple have provided us with 2 , yes 2 friday funnies. Wonderful. he he he

  26. Tenuc says:

With all this angst being generated by the Warmists 10/10 campaigne, I think us sceptics should start an 11/11/11 event to promote the love of Real Science.

Perhaps 11 November could be a day for sensible discourse about the problems inherent in predicting weather/climate in pubs around the world, with an 11 minute ‘Hug A Warmistathon’ starting at 11.00 :-)

Seeing Al Gore being hugged by Anthony Watts would make my day… :-)

  27. DrDavid says:

Is the 10/10 presented as European or American date format? Ie. Is it October 10 or 10 October?

  28. Stephen Brown says:

As at 20:17 BST Elvis Presley is still a member of 10:10.
Best they leave the blue suede shoes alone, he doesn’t like anyone messing with them.

Don’t know where you’re from so am making no assumptions and not trying to be snarky and I know you were being humorous, but where I’m from (Britain) the 11th of the 11th has a meaning that takes priority. Can we get another date though? A day of Real Science would be quite something.

Professor Tol could not be described as a sceptic, but I’m absolutely sure he was being ironic.

He’s just about the only academic here in Ireland with the courage to speak out against the insane climate abatement nonsense and we’re very lucky to have stolen him from the Netherlands.

  32. Dr Chaos says:

I think, at least I hope, Richard Tol was being sarcastic in his comment. I have high hopes we will convert him over to the dark side soon! Next winter should do the trick.

  35. PhilJourdan says:

I admit I am a contrarian. If someone tells me no, I have to ask why? It is apparent that the AGW clique will tolerate no questions, just blind obedience.

Even if I believed their data, I would not be a warmist. Blind obedience is the singular cause of most of the holocausts of the 20th (and now 21st) centuries.

  36. Stephen Brown says:

I have posted a link below, I know absolutely nothing about the person/organisation on whose web-site it appears but a reading of the article left me with a distinct chill.
[snip - it is on par with the 9/11 truthers and the chemtrail people, I don't want any discussion of it here - Anthony]

  37. Stephen Brown says:

The link to which I referred to above was given in a comment on Delingpole’s blog.

  38. Mike Edwards says:

    start an 11/11/11 event

Sorry to spoil the party, but we in the UK (and folks elsewhere) already have one of those, and it is nothing funny.

This is Remembrance Day. It is a commemoration of those who have died in times of war.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Traditionally marked by a 2 minutes silence at 11:00am and by the wearing of poppies.

The time and date derive from the ending of the First World War.

  39. Djozar says:

    Mike Edwards,

I remember the commemeration when I was in Upper Heyford (near Coventry) for a year. God Bless the British and their soldiers and sailors.

  40. M.A.DeLuca II says:

Ah-HA! Thank you, Mike Edwards at 1:14pm, for clearing up a niggling question I had about a David Tennant episode of Doctor Who.

  41. PaulH says:

On the lighter side, I’m all for John Graham-Cumming’s idea of making 10/10/10 the ultimate answer day, since 101010 binary is 42 in decimal. And as any fan of the late Douglas Adams and his Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy would know, 42 is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything. :-)

  42. Stephen Brown says:

    Anthony,
Reference my post at October 8, 2010 at 12:47 pm; as I said, I picked up on the link at Delingpole’s site. I had no idea about who’d posted it nor of the persons involved.
I apologise, I should have checked further.
I have but a vague idea of what constitutes ‘truthers’ and ‘chemtrailists’ but it is enough for me to want to have nothing to do with them.
Apologies once again; I must learn more of what goes on in the US and more about those involved.

  43. Ric Werme says:

Dang, the count doesn’t show up on a couple Firefox browsers, not sure why. I see it in the source code for the frame. At least I know why I couldn’t find it.

I could automate a daily fetch like I did for the Science Museum poll, but I’m not sure if there’s any point in it now. Is anyone going to pay them any attention at all after Oct 10?

  44. DCA engineer says:

I’ve been debating with a RC and CP regualar the AGW thoery on my hometown blog usually it always ends him making this challange.

Anyone want to take a wack at it?

“You are cordially invited to refute the AGW theory, and refute the other theories that show GHG’s connected to Earth’s climate in the geological past.
And also provide a alternative theory (alien spacecraft?) that explains the data/observations that match the AGW theory.”

And also provide a alternative theory (alien spacecraft?) that explains the data/observations that match the AGW theory.”

Well to a challenge another one :

“You are cordially invited to make a single verifable and quantitative prediction of the so called AGW theory. Preferably in the timeframe of our lives. You are also cordially invited to make up your mind if the AGW theory predicts more huricanes or less hurricanes . Actually the prediction of the number of hurricanes may be a good test. As long as no precise, verifiable prediction is made, this is no science, it is just tongue flapping.”

  47. Louis Hissink says:

    QC?

Nope, it’s pure arrogance on 10:10’s part – implying that some sceptics are not as sceptical as they make out – or just another skirmish in the escalating battle for the mob’s minds by the 10:10 elites.

And it’s the younger generation who are being targetted – the generation who would only find the facts of World War II by going to a library (if they were taught how to read) or asking their uncool elders.

What’s that immortal phrase in Orwell’s 1984? He who controls the present controls the past, and hence the future?

  48. Graeme says:

How about signing in as “HAL 9000″ after all the computer models need to be represented too.

  49. David A. Evans says:

Well, as I just can’t really bring myself to look at the sponsors page & I recieved no reply to my last email to O2, I sent this…

    Mr. Massey.

Have you noticed how the numbers joined to 10:10 are declining?

I don’t know if it could have anything to do with with the fact that there were ‘some’ joke entries, such as Anthony Watts, (wattsupwiththat), Lord Christopher Monckton, (suppose you MAY have heard of him), James Delingpole, (sceptic journalist on the Telegraph), Nessie of Loch Ness needs no introduction and I doubt Elvis Presley does either!

    Is it getting through yet?

    They’re a joke & you’re rapidly becoming a part of the joke.

Actually you became part of the joke the second you signed up!

As I haven’t heard from you, I have to assume you don’t care about the state of your business Worldwide. I know a lot of people knock Fox & Glenn Beck but he’s got hold of this & has been running with it the last 2 days.

Wonder if he’s heard about the telefonica connection on his tips email. becktips@fox.com

All the best in your new job.

    David A. Evans.

    I CC’d to eureferendum & notoo2.

  51. David A. Evans says:

    Oh While I’m at it.
Can I ask for sponsors to allow me to turn my heating on on Sunday instead of having to wear this bloody sweater?

    DaveE.

  52. Alvin says:

Did they resign or did they just push red buttons?

  53. barbarausa says:

Just went to 10:10, and I see no names or numbers in the “Join us…” (why do I keep hearing creepy voices droning that phrase? What movie is that from?) sidebar.

Have too many people signed up fakes at their expense?

Golly, I thought only clever young creatives wre supposed to be netroot-mobile-snarky!

  54. Rattus Norvegicus says:

I have to say that seeing this gives me a certain frisson:

    http://content.usatoday.com/communities/sciencefair/post/2010/10/wegman-plagiarism-investigation-/1

My, didn’t the Virginia AG cite Wegman six times in his Appendix B? Hmm…

Now, this in no way denigrates his finding that the error (not fraud) that Mann made in his initial analysis technique was wrong (and it was, as even Mann admitted in the Climategate emails http://www.eastangliaemails.com/emails.php?eid=591&filename=1132094873.txt). The important point is, as shown in Wahl and Ammann (2007), that it didn’t make any difference to the conclusions. It does however speak to the level of overall scholarship in the report.

Put it on the front page, Anthony…

  55. Just The Facts says:

At the moment 10:10’s UK site has 73,083 People on board, just 73 more than they had when Anthony provided an update this morning. And the top of the Recent Signups list is currently “Boycott O2″…
    http://www.1010global.org/uk/people

  56. Latimer Alder says:

Another seven signed up overnight (73,090 at 06:10 BST)…

At a rate of say one per hour…it’ll only take until December 2012 to get back to the 93,00o mark. But 10:10 day is tomorrow! Another triumph for our dedicated team of planners.

PS – To put this number in perspective for comparison, 41,000 turned out for the top soccer match last weekend (Chelsea vs Arsenal). To pay the $100 + for tickets and to spend a whole Saturday afternoon is a bit more of a commitment than just signing one’s name to a website. And the diehard fans do this week in week out…not just once a year (or maybe not at all – we’ll see tomorrow). Up the Shots!

  57. So how many people really are signed up?

Were those just names of people who had recent done hits to the web site but were called sign ups instead? I hope that would not be the case.

  58. kuhnkat says:

Hey, I want to share a ride with the Loch Ness Monster!!!

  59. Just The Facts says:

Now it’s 73,104 and Marc Morano is number two on the Recent Signups list.:

  60. Phil Clarke says:

Dunno why but Anthony just emailed me to ask if the Phil Clarke who signed up last night was me.

    Yes, Mr Watts. It was.

  61. Just The Facts says:

    Now it’s 73,190, 10:10’s UK membership isn’t exactly growing like wildfire…

I think you may be thinking of the eerie chant, “One of us. One of us.” This is from Tod Browning’s memorable movie Freaks.

  64. Andy says:

I signed up a few names such as ‘Gullible Idiot’ and ‘Warmist Watermelon’ on the uk site. They were very quickly removed, and then ten minutes later I saw the list of new members had been completely removed from the homepage. Seems Franny and 10:10 don’t have as much of a ‘crazy’ sense of humour as they thought they did!

BTW I don’t know yet if they’ve put the list up again.

And beside maybe he’s just the only nut fucker who hasn’t understood Irelands economical predicament, which pretty much spells EU subsidies if played right?

  66. Just The Facts says:

You accused him of being sarcastic, he wasn’t. That has to do with his previously stated opinions, not his qualifications.

Where you got the idea that I was appealing to authority is beyond me.

If Ireland wasn’t spending €10billion on wind turbines and however many billions the transmission lines will cost we’d be in a much better predicament. Especially since the nearby Scottish windmills are running at half the capacity the industry claimed. Incidentally, we’ve spent more bailing out our incompetent banks in the last 3 years than we ever got in 30+ years of European subsidies.

    On 10/10/10 day

Somehow it has jumped back up from 73,000 to OVER 96,000 again..

As I had a screen capture of Exploding Mr Creosote being signed up, how many of those people are REAL..

Deathly silence in the UK about this ‘event’ anything happening around the world?

  73. Richard Tol says:

    @Barry
The jump in numbers, first 20,000 down, now 20,000 up, is most likely due to duplication of names.

I signed up twice (first to check whether I can sign off — I cannot — and then to see whether they check for duplication — they did not at first, and then they did, and now they don’t again). Search for Richard Tol and you’ll find two.

The 20,000 duplicates reappeared after James Delingpole made fun of the drop in numbers.

The latest recruit is Feyd Rautha, nephew of Baron Harkonnen.

  74. Just The Facts says:

  75. DirkH says:

Demonstrations in Germany today. For an increase in welfare. Warming? 10:10? 350.org? Nuttin. Dead silence. No explosions, though.

  76. Richard Tol says:

    Hi Richard,

The site checks for duplicate email addresses, not duplicate names. That’s because people can have the same name. There are other Richard Tols in the world.

Your name appears twice presumably because you signed up with two different email addresses. Either that, or because another Richard Tol signed up at a similar time. It’s difficult to tell the difference between these cases, but it seems reasonable to assume users wouldn’t sign up twice in quick succession using different email addresses.

  77. Richard Tol says:

    @Other Richard Tol
There are about five Richard Tols in the world, but only one who is interested in climate.

In this case, I signed up with two different email addresses. There were two Richard Tols in the system. Then the number dropped by 20,000 and there was only one Richard Tol in the system. Later the number rose again by 20,000 and there are again two Richard Tols in the system.

Last night, between 9:46 and 11:01 pm, 4 new people signed up and the numbers of signees increased by 105 people.

“Last night, between 9:46 and 11:01 pm, 4 new people signed up and the numbers of signees increased by 105 people.”

Where did you get 4 from? Not your screenshots…

  80. Michael H Anderson says:

Maybe they convinced 20K of their membership to volunteer for the Ethical Suicide Booths.

  81. Darren Hollis says:

UPDATE: They definitely had to purge some 20K+ in people numbers. This is confirmed independently here by Richard North of the EU Referendum blog in the UK, who noticed well before I did.

Richard North’s observation does not confirm your hypothesis. He makes the same observation as you. There are a number of possible reasons for this observation. Your hypothesis gives one. The observation doesn’t conflict with your hypothesis, but it certainly doesn’t confirm it.

You’re a scientist aren’t you? Is your scientific rigour really this poor?

REPLY:Be as upset as you wish. I stand by the numbers, the screencaps don’t lie. – Anthony
