Global warming, the “universal boogeyman” of our times, is causing dog depression.

Literally ANYTHING can be blamed on global warming aka climate change. It’s like in ancient and medieval times, when bad weather was blamed on displeasure of the gods, and later, witches.

Get a load of this load of codswallop from Tom Bawden at the Independent:

Global warming might be causing dogs to become depressed, say pet behaviourists

Leading pet behaviourists say the number of depressed and unsettled dogs they have seen in recent months is unprecedented

A boredom epidemic is sweeping through Britain’s dog population – and global warming could be to blame.

Across the country, there are reports of down-in-the-mouth mutts, and under-the-weather canines.

Leading pet behaviourists told The Independentthat the number of depressed and unsettled dogs they have seen in recent months is unprecedented.

And they suggested that the spate of wet winters could be at the root of the problem, as owners cut down on the daily walks that are crucial to keeping dogs’ spirits up.

Sarah Fisher, an animal behaviour counsellor with around two decades experience, has also noticed a level of canine unrest that is unprecedented in her career. Ms Fisher works with horses as well as dogs and has noticed that the boredom is not confined to household pets.

“I’ve never seen our dogs or horses this bored before in 20 years. Horses that have lived happily outside before are saying ‘I actually can’t cope with this mud and wet anymore’,” she said.

“We’re turning them out of their stables and they’re saying ‘Get me back in straight away’.

“They can’t settle, they look bored, but actually it’s to do with physical stress and mental boredom, they can’t go off quietly and graze because they keep sliding around the field,” Ms Fisher added.

Who am I to judge, I am just a plain normal dog and sheep owner. My fist thought, reading this article: Dogs has a tendency to sense their owner’s mental state. If the dog owners would stop worrying about a bit extra CO₂ (plant food), enjoy the rain, snow and sunshine with their dogs, the owners would be happier and the dogs would be happier. However, not much sensation in that.

Exactly what I was thinking. What percentage of those dogs with issues ahve owners with similar issues?
Dogs certainly do reflect the behavior of their respective human families. It is in their nature to reflect their surrounding influences.
A dog that is constantly kicked by its owner learns to bite.
A dog that is constantly neglected by its owner has no social skills.
It only stands to reason, a dog that is constantly exposed to an environmant of climate fear expressed by their owners will display actions appropriate for that exposure

Sorry John In Oz if my English writing is so disturbing to you.

Apart from that, I am not sure I had the correct assumption in the first place. Why? Because of this:

A 2013 Canadian paper reported, “People who live or work in close proximity to IWTs have experienced symptoms that include decreased quality of life, annoyance, stress, sleep disturbance, headache, anxiety, depression and cognitive dysfunction.”
Taken from: https://wattsupwiththat.com/2019/05/22/costly-wind-power-menaces-man-and-nature/

The depressed dogs may have residence near IWTs. I find it very likely that dogs would often suffer from the infra-sound as some humans do.

In that case one could conclude that the depression syndrome is a result of the solving of the non existing climate problem.

No way, just doesn’t make sense for animals that originated on the steppes of Eurasia known for extremes.

We live in Florida. We have an Airedale Terrier. He is our third Airedale. All of them preferred very cold weather but had no problem with warm weather long as they got enough water. Not sure what would depress an Airedale but global warming ain’t one. I am certain that whatever comes our Airedale will not bat an eye and somehow turn it into a new game.

6 inches of snow overnight here in Boulder, Colorado and the dogs don’t look too sad as they bask in the heat of the wood stove. I won’t tell them that carbon dioxide is spewing out the chimney, that would certainly make them morose.

“If only dogs and horses could talk, let alone comprehend such abstract concepts like “global warming”.”

Or nonsense like dog depression. Humans make animals their scapegoats and excuses for everything. A dog is “sad” when you don’t feed it, happy immediately after you do. They are NOT complicated. They do not care about rain, or mud and they are never bored. They lack the capacity. They may have nothing to do and improvise by eating your sofa, but that’s NOT boredom (or chewing on your hand and jumping in your face as in the case of my tiny yorkie). It’s what dogs do. It’s “who they are”.

(Kenji looks great! Very cute critter!)

the amount of dogs being given ssri meds is huge and growing
left alone n bored they bark or ruin furniture etc
must be a behavioural issue here have some meds.
the pharmas are laughing all the way to the bank
and as humans have aggresion and suicidal issues with those meds imagine the poor dogs unable to say anything if they snap because of the meds theyre likely to be euthanased orr surrendered.
and that also means sudden withdrawal of meds cos rescues couldnt afford that, another big problem

Yeah,
The Jeremey Vine Climate Change Program [BBC Radio 2, 1200-1400 today, Tuesday] apparently had a half-hour on this. [I turned off at 1203].
Even the Wiki-thing that we all can edit noted that Fairbourne is a part of Wales that the local council will not defend – they’ll let the waves roll into, and over, it. Eventually.
BBC very gung-ho and in full Project Fear mode. I assume Vine blamed Climate Change, Brexit – and – wait for it – Trump.
That is all the BC blames these days for anything [and often two of the three!].

Horses.
The modern horse was brought to the shores of the Gulf of Mexico in the early 1500s.
Despite considerable climate changes since they thrived.
From an almost tropical climate and spreading northward survived in the semi-arid regions of the great plains to mountain valleys right up the cordillera.
Wild, and on their own.
Right up to central British Columbia where it can gets as cold as 50 below F.
They have learned to live in both hot and cold climate regions.

When wind** is over 25 mph and gusting to 40, our horses like a little less exposure than being in an open field. They head for a spot on the lee side of a grove of trees and thick brush. I have never noticed rain, snow, or cold causing them to want to get into a building (stable). They don’t talk much, but I sense they would not approve of me closing them in.

**wind – – – Many suspect that as prey-animals, horses do not like the noise and movement from all directions. Movement means limbs swaying, leaves, lawn chairs, or plastic things blowing around, or the neighbor’s loose metal roof sheets.
Predation is a significant concern to a horse.

If you wanna keep your dog happy, it’s real simple:

1) Give them your attention

2) Feed them well but not too much

3) Take them out for exercise .. they absolutely could not care less what the weather is like outside, they always wanna go out, it’s in their genes. They may get a little raggedy looking if it’s especially hot or rainy or blowing hard, but so what? I’ve certainly never had a dog that preferred the indoors.

Dogs are bored because human owners have gotten increasing lazy physically, while increasingly stimulated mentally — NOT a good combination.

Physically lazy, mentally overstimulated adults, thus, are talking the talk of proper animal care, but (literally) are not walking the walk. That’s my suspicion, anyway.

Mentally overstimulated humans are so focused on climate change/catastrophe/emergency/disruption or other entertainment that they might be ignoring their day-to-day obligations to their furry friends. Dogs are sick of the phrase, “climate change” — I propose this phrase as the new “attack” command for elite security dogs.

“Sit”, “lie down”, “shake”, “roll over”, … “climate change” — NOT a pretty picture.

Of course, the article is based on fake statistics or perhaps no statistics.

There is no unusual trend in UK rainfall which makes sense as global warming stopped in 1998.

There also is no trend in winter rainfall.

In fact the last 3 winters in the UK have been on the average better for dog walking than normal.

The Gods are famously capricious, but, as far as I can tell, the witches were maligned.

They were mainly responsible for good weather.

If you compare the dates, you will note that as the persecution of witches became more severe, the Little Ice Age became more severe. By the end of the 18th century, the witches had been nearly completely wiped out. However, in more recent times, their place has been taken by climate scientists, and as these increase in number and influence, so the weather gets warmer.
