Excerpts: I’m terrified by what’s being done to our planet. …

I’ve dreaded this depth of Earth breakdown for almost two decades, and, like many of my colleagues, I’ve been trying to warn youAs hard as I could. Now it’s here. …

I only feel fury at those in power, and bottomless grief for all that I love. We are losing Earth on our watch. …

Fossil fuels are causing this damage. Therefore, the only way out of this heat nightmare is to end them. No amount of tree planting, recycling, carbon offsetting, or wishful carbon-capture thinking will ever change this. The longer we allow the fossil fuel industry to exist, the more irreversible damage to Earth the people who profit from it will continue to knowingly cause.  …

I have no doubt that fossil fuel executives and lobbyists – and those who chose to stand with them – will, in the future, be considered criminals. …

Each minute the fossil fuel industry exists, each drilling permit, airplane flight, gallon of gas, fossil fuel adlobbyist’s email, takes us further into irreversible heat catastrophe, socially and physically.  …

Using executive orders and federal agency rules, and without needing to involve this failure of a Congress, Biden could end new drilling leases on federal lands and waters, block new pipelines and effectively ban fracking. He could unleash a historic education program to counter fossil fuel industry disinformation, using the bully pulpit to build awareness and support. He could prohibit government financing of overseas fossil fuel infrastructure, end energy department fossil-fuel financing programs, ban new fossil-fuel vehicle sales by 2030, prosecute violations by fossil fuel polluters, commit to veto laws granting immunity to such criminals, and more. …

Declaring a climate emergency would unleash additional powers such as banning oil exports and further accelerating renewable energy buildout on a scale not seen since the mobilization for the second world war. It would send an unmistakable signal to investors still living in the past, to universities that have been shamefully slow to divest, to media outlets that have failed to connect the dots, to all the dangerously lagging institutions of our society. And it would be a desperately needed win for climate activists. …

Biden had the last opportunity of any president to keep the world under 1.5C of heating. Tragically, this opportunity has now almost certainly been squandered. …

The planet is desperate for policy that creates an equitable transition away from fossil fuels, and into climate emergency mode as a society.

%of global emissions
2022——–2020
B 01.26% 1%
R 04.66% 5%
I 06.71% 7%
C 32.48% 28%
S 01.21% 1%
T 46.32%

…are responsible for almost 50% of global emissions and will be doing nothing to decrease emissions in the next 10 years. China, in fact, has promised to INCREASE their emissions for the next 20 years.

With the rate of Chinese GHG growth, the USA could drop to absolute ZERO emissions tomorrow. Their manufacturing industries AND associated CO2 production would be outsourced to China the day after and any global effects would neither be eliminated nor forestalled. US citizens would simply be out of work and unable to afford to afford to live.

Absolutely correct. If the United States cut its production of oil and gas to zero tomorrow, it wouldn’t make a damn bit of difference. The climate-sane people of the world would just continue to up their CO2 output.

Your plan has no hope of succeding, Peter Kalmus. Give it up and head to your bunker.

According to the recent Energy Institute ‘Statistical Review of World Energy 2023’

The Asia Pacific region continued to increase its share of total global CO2 emissions – accounting for almost 50%.

Whilst China was responsible for 72% of primary energy consumption growth during 2022

I wonder if it would be better for Kalmus to head to Canada.

Recent modifications to the “assisted euthanasia” legislation apparently makes it much easier for the seriously deranged to receive a kindly injection to ease their torment.

Much easier, apparently, than getting ‘normal’ treatment for mental illness.

I tend to think that he is totally sincere in his beliefs, He is a prime example of the modern (since the dept education took control) American education system which no longer teaches our children HOW to think–just what to think. They are taught to believe any official narrative feed to them without question. Despite ample evidence and hard data to the contrary, he has been taught to ignore anything that goes against the gospel he now believes in.
Yes he does need help —but our education system needs help even more.

I agree, he is mentally ill.
And I think he may indeed be one of the ones who is a True Believer, but his position in the Warmista High Priesthood means he is one of the people who lies about everything, all the time. They are not just wrong. They alter data. They make stuff up. They present unevidenced hypotheses as facts. They go out of their way to be irrational cranks who preach an over-the-top version of doomsday catastrophism.
And he is the poor tortured soul who has been given the onerous burden of “knowing the truth”, even as no one listens to him as the world bakes itself into a crackly crunch.

Gimme a break! In medical terminology, this jackass is nuttier than a fruitcake.

The truth is, he is a miseducated ninny. He spews alarmist drivel, unconnected to reality. He insists that in order to save ourselves, we have to take an action that will necessarily lead to the deaths of most of the human beings alive on Earth today.
It is impossible to feed, cloth, house, warm, cook, or provides jobs and an income for nearly the entire population without the energy sources that allow us to do each of these things.

And he says we have to do it RIGHT NOW!
Full Stop!

“Our Carbon Budget is used up”?
Says who? Him?
That is an assertion disconnected from all factual information.
It is simply something that alarmists made up one day out of nowhere.
It is not supported by any objective scientific study or information of any kind.
Same goes for the idea that 1.5 degrees above preindustrial GAST is some sort of hard limit to what a human being can survive. That is not only made up out of nowhere and nothing, it is a modification of the number that was preached as recently as a few years ago, when it had always been 2.0°. They changed it because it was looking increasingly probable that that 2° was not going to happen anytime soon, if ever.

We are in an Ice Age, for Pete’s sake!
Most of the surface of our planet is cold enough to quickly kill an unprotected human being, or most anything else alive for that matter.
A large part of Earth is a permanently frozen wasteland.
An even huger portion of the planet is cold enough to kill a person on a seasonal basis, including the most inhabited regions of the planet.

Not a soul has become a climate refugee due to crop failures, or rising sea level, or any other reason.
The recent alarmist blizzard of doomsday nonsense is a transparent and pre-announced campaign of political propaganda, nothing more.
It began promptly just after the New York Times published an op-ed calling for a politicization of climate news.
Just in time for the middle of Summer, when, big surprise, it gets pretty dang hot in a lot of places.

But nothing and no one is dropping dead. No crops are failing.
Life goes on exactly as always, and in fact very little in the way of anything dangerous is going on anywhere in the world. In the US, burn acreage is at a record low for the year. Hot days are at the lowest levels on record. Reservoirs are refilling, and the worst of the recent droughts have abated. Wyoming is green and blooming, very rare for this time of year. A huge lake has formed where it has been very dry for a long time.

Apparently the only qualification for getting a PhD in “climate science”, is to be completely ignorant of every scrap of information in every science library on Earth.

It may well be the case that this person will be a case study in a most unusual brand of psychosis: Driven to insanity and utter delusion by one’s own lies!

Kalmus is difficult to listen to, the insanity hurts my brain. He says things like they’re obviously true, like the Sun in the sky, but they are certainly not. He’s supposedly a scientist but it seems he’s only been reading the hype and political propaganda and not the actual data.

It looks like he has mental issues and is a danger to himself and his family – and indeed anyone around him. His psychosis could lead him to attack someone getting into their car or turning on the air conditioning, or anything else the person has a perfect right to do.

Kalmus is a perfect example of the kind of useful idiot, fully activated and brainwashed, that communists/socialists seek to create in order to seize power. Kalmus could be the beginning of a new army of brownshirts to terrify the general populace into submission.

While a student at MIT, my son did an internship at JPL where he worked on the Mars Rover. Due to limited bandwidth, they had to prioritize what information would be transmitted back to Earth. He developed a program to distinguish between already known information and new information that needed to be investigated. This was back in 2003 and his work had to be completed and locked down years before it was deployed. I can’t believe that JPL now employs someone who is obviously such an unstable nutjob as this Kalmus. Why does JPL even have a “climate scientist” when they’re the Jet Propulsion Lab?

In this so-called “information age” people are dumber than they’ve ever been. Probably cause we’ve become so lazy from having information so readily available at our fingertips rather than how in the past we had to go to the library, research the card catalogue, and then go find the books on the shelf. Then read them ourselves and outline the relevant information. Now we just google a question and accept the choices that google presents to us.

From the above article:

” . . . and without needing to involve this failure of a Congress, Biden could end new drilling leases on federal lands and waters, block new pipelines and effectively ban fracking.”
— Peter Kalmus

Well, setting aside the question of whether or not Kalmus merits the classification “scientist”, he certainly appears to be unqualified to comment on the powers of the President being able to override the power (and will) of Congress.

Hey, Peter, read up on the Separation of Powers as defined in the US Constitution!

Also, Peter, you must been spending so much time worrying and crying that you missed this news of two years ago:
“A federal judge in Louisiana has blocked the Biden administration’s suspension of new oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters . . .
Judge Terry A. Doughty of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana granted a preliminary injunction Tuesday against the administration, saying that the power to pause offshore oil and gas leases “lies solely with Congress” because it was the legislative branch that originally made federal lands and waters available for leasing.
Judge Doughty also ruled that 13 states that are suing the administration over its temporary halt to new leases “have made a showing that there is a substantial likelihood that President Biden exceeded his powers.”

In all seriousness, his reaction appears to me to be similar to a dysfunctional brain following some form of breakdown. I am no expert but I do know what a damaged brain can mean, especially cognitively and behaviourally. His inability to take a step back and examine what he says and when, is scarily reminiscent to me of frontal lobe dysfunction and depression; in that case medication might do him a deal of harm which as a human being I do not wish upon him. My impression is Kalmus wants Biden to declare a Climate Emergency that would suspend the U.S. Constitution.

I guess he wants Biden to declare Martial Law, which is what it would take for Biden to be able to do what Kalmus wants him to do.

And of course, stopping all oil and gas today in the U.S. would make no difference in reducing CO2 going into the atmosphere, as other nations increase their output. So it’s a really stupid idea on many levels.

Of the three, idiot, moron, and imbecile…imbecile may sound the dumbest, but in fact idiot denotes the lowest IQ level of the three:

These were once scientific terms denoting specific levels of mental retardation or deficiency. Or effective age of mental development, to put it a different way:

Idiots. —Those so defective that the mental development never exceeds that or a normal child of about two years.

Imbeciles. —Those whose development is higher than that of an idiot, but whose intelligence does not exceed that of a normal child of about seven years.

Morons. —Those whose mental development is above that of an imbecile, but does not exceed that of a normal child of about twelve years.

— Edmund Burke Huey, Backward and Feeble-Minded Children, 1912

Alternatively:
“Morons – Those with IQs between 51 and 70 (adequate learning skills to complete menial tasks and to communicate) Imbeciles – Those with IQs between 26 and 50 (unable to progress past a mental age of approximately six) Idiots – those with IQs between 0 and 25 (poor motor skills, extremely limited communication, and little response to stimulus).”

Who could forget the Three Stooges response when some guy called them idiots:

“We’re not idiots, we’re morons!” Moe exclaimed proudly.

Here is what will happen if Biden does what this “scientist” asks for:
Transportation will come to a screeching halt. People won’t be able to drive to work or to the grocery store. There won’t be groceries there anyway because the trucks that deliver them will be grounded too. The economy will also stop. Starvation will soon set it.

Over 50% of homes in the U.S. are heated by fossil fuels. So the people who live in them will freeze in the winter time. Older people and babies will be hard hit.

60% of electricity produced in the US comes from fossil fuels. So that will mean a 60% reduction in electricity too. Where will you get electricity for all those EVs? Where will you get electricity for all the electric appliances?

Survival will be extremely difficult. People will die. That is far worse than temperature rising 1.5 C per century and sea level rising 1 foot per century.

Someone like this fellow who makes a fuss, drops the F bomb about the end of the world, etc., isn’t likely to be a direct physical danger to people close to him. However, his “fraught with calamity’ outlook could easily be given more power by the calculating ideologues at his place of employment, in the media, etc. So it’s my view that his enablers should be ashamed of themselves, and you never know where that could lead, I guess.

1) There is nothing in the IPCC that supports a belief that we are facing the end of life as we know it, even with totally unlimited fossil fuel usage.
2) Does this neurotic nut job realize that 1.5C won’t even get the planet back to the levels the world enjoyed during the Medieval Warm Period.
3) Even if we do get back to the levels of the MWP, we will still be cooler than the planet has been for 90% of the last 10 to 12 thousand years.
4) Even if the US does completely stop emitting CO2, the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere will continue going up, in fact the decrease in the rate of increase will be barely measurable, if it is measurable at all.

Who equipped humanity with knowledge, intelligence, and the ability to treat many of its illnesses both physical and mental?
Who gave us the holocene?
Who gave us the little ice age?
Who gave us the ability to record weather and improve our agricultural skills?
Who gave us Peter Kalmus and his type?

Mother Nature knows and has no bounds and has never promised to make it easy for anything to live, to understand truth from fiction, hysteria from real fear, lies from truths, the backlash generated by constant hyperbole, the dangers of getting prognostications wrong and of jumping to conclusions, to be tolerant with those who panic and scream at us, and point us in the wrong direction for safety and carefully move them towards more secure footing.

Had the MSM not been lying to us about stuff for what seems to many of us a lifetime, and had MSM faithfully stuck to the facts then perhaps we would have solved our problems with an array of clean nuclear fission projects leaving the more fragile of our species to focus on things worthy of their energy rather than getting in a lather about normal stuff.

Only a fool thinks that USA/Biden has any power to stop the global population burning fossil fuels. Both China and India are accelerating use of fossil fuels. China already burns close to twice what USA burns.

The planned transition will require more fossil fuel than it eliminates. Everything will need to be made in China and that involves a lot of fuel in shipping to get raw materials to China and then finished product to export markets.

Those two features of our modern world are why we have 8 billion people living for the most part comfortable lives with health and prospects better than any era that has gone before.
The benefits to the planet of stable none destructive (no need to fell forest) energy access and sufficient spare time to enjoy life means we have a utopian existence for most people.
The tragedy listening to people like Kallmus, Monbiot and too many others, is their prime policy ideas will result in billions of people perishing through malnutrition and cold due to lack of energy availability..

In my experience as a hiring manager dating back to the 1980’s there is plenty of evidence to indicate that a vast number of PhD’s are woefully overeducated beyond their ability to comprehend. I can readily think of 2 PhD’s that I’ve worked with – one in economics and one in education – that are some of the most clueless people I’ve ever met. On the other hand, I can name two high school dropouts that I hired for technical positions in engineering that were some of the sharpest people I’ve worked with. Possession of advanced college degrees is no indication of intelligence, and in fact, once again as a hiring manager, if a candidate had a PhD their resume would go immediately into the round file as it was an indication that they possessed little common sense and were unable to work as a team player. As we used to say in college, “BS, MS, PhD… BullS–t, More S–t, Pile it Higher and Deeper.”
