Climate Activist Scientists Get all Verklempt Their Echo Chamber No Longer Exists on Twitter, Throw Tantrums and Leave

From France 24

Everything is hate and bots with these weak kneed crybullies.

Researchers have documented an explosion of hate and misinformation on Twitter since the Tesla billionaire took over in October 2022 — and now experts say communicating about climate science on the social network on which many of them rely is getting harder.

Policies aimed at curbing the deadly effects of climate change are accelerating, prompting a rise in what experts identify as organised resistance by opponents of climate reform.

Peter Gleick, a climate and water specialist with nearly 99,000 followers, announced on May 21 he would no longer post on the platform because it was amplifying racism and sexism.

https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230524-climate-scientists-flee-twitter-as-hostility-surges
For Background on Peter Gleick see these posts
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/02/20/breaking-gleick-confesses/
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/02/28/the-gleick-tragedy/

These comments in reaction to Gleick’s dramatic, pearl-clutching, announcement of his departure sums up reality rather well.

Now that Twitter content moderators and healthy conversation enforcers are not amplifying climate activists nor suppressing dissenting voices it’s disheartening for those that believed everyone agrees with them.

Robert Rohde, a physicist and lead scientist at the non-profit environmental data analysis group Berkeley Earth, analysed activity on hundreds of accounts of widely followed specialists posting about climate science before and after the takeover.

He found climate scientists’ tweets were losing impact. The average number of likes they received was down 38 percent and average retweets fell 40 percent.

https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230524-climate-scientists-flee-twitter-as-hostility-surges
Deer in the headlights – Dessler is taking his ball and going home.

Andrew Dessler, professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University, said he was moving most of his climate communication to Substack, a newsletter platform.

“Climate communications on Twitter are less useful (now) given that I can see that my tweets are getting less engagement,” he said.

“In response to almost any tweet concerning climate change, I find my notifications inundated with replies from verified accounts making misleading or misguided claims.”

https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230524-climate-scientists-flee-twitter-as-hostility-surges

The time record holder for cry-bullying, Katherine Hayhoe, is discussed in the article as well. Last time we interacted she called me a white supremacist or something.

Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe said replies from apparent trolls or bots had shot up

And of course Mann’s always complaining about organized conspiracies.

Michael Mann, a prominent climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania and a regular target for abuse by deniers of climate change, said he believed the rise in misinformation was “organised and orchestrated” by opponents of climate reforms.

Awareness of the climate con grows thanks to Elon Musk. A more noble cause than building high speed golf buggies.

Meanwhile the western Pacific north of PNG has hit more than 30C and convection is getting into overdrive as it always has done and will continue to do while there is an atmosphere on Earth and enough sunlight to get the water temperature above 15C:

 Is there a relationship?

Of course. Cyclones are convection in overdrive.

Nullschool determines a value for CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy). This is the energy that drives convection. The region of the cyclone has developed widespread convective potential:
https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/500hPa/overlay=cape/orthographic=142.10,10.31,365/loc=134.777,15.019

Any surface above 15C can develop convective potential. Above 22C, rain is usually associated with the convective instability. And storm intensity increases as the surface temperature increases.

The ocean surface temperature can overshoot 30C but that is the sustainable limit because the Level of Free Convection approaches the altitude of freezing at that surface temperature. That means any water vapour ejected above the LFC during instability will cool to ice forming cloud. The cloud restricts surface sunlight and there is only a short period of clear sky before the next cloudburst because of the close proximity of the LFC to the level of freezing.

If there is widespread CAPE then the initial updraft following instability can spin up a cyclone that becomes a self-sustaining convective storm providing the surface temperature remains high enough to supply the latent heat to keep feeding water vapour into the atmosphere.

Nullschool does not have sufficient vertical resolution of moisture to determine if an LFC has formed. The high CAPE being reported along the northern coast of the Arabian Sea is unlikely to be convective potential because I doubt there is an LFC.
https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/overlay=cape/orthographic=-294.76,17.05,373/loc=62.211,24.033

This is where mid level dry air is being drawn form the land disrupting the formation of an LFC:
https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/500hPa/overlay=relative_humidity/orthographic=-294.76,17.05,373/loc=62.211,24.033

If these Climate Alarmists could prove their CO2 claims, they wouldn’t have to run from anyone.

What they don’t like hearing is skeptics saying they don’t have any evidence, and the Climate Alarmists have no comeback because they *don’t* have any evidence. So they run away and hide and whine like little babies.

Tom, recall what Steve McIntyre had to say about the mediocrity of “The Team” climate scientists after easily
trashing their published works for over a decade (some were even retracted and Steve was not a favored son of the climateering industry and its editors). Amongst other things, he said they would have been lucky to be highschool science teachers in earlier generations.

Dr Phil Jones of U of East Anglia admitted that he never learned how to use Excel and he was busy statisticalizing the Medieval Warm Period and the LIA out of existence or some such.

Strativatius: Jordan Peterson uses the same method to handle woke iinterviewers. Woke newsies has the way forward paved by the neo-left social constructs. They say nonsensical and stuff and lies with the associated buzz words and the interviewee is expected to respond in a form-fitted agreeable way.

For the interviewer to not even have considered he could be disagreed with and be asked for examples is hugely telling. He was rendered speechless outside of his woke-spun cocoon. It is clear reality is a frightening nightmare for the likes of such folk. I thought the neo-left were dishonest, self-serving charlatans, but that’s not the case. These folk have some deeply planted dissociative disorder, maybe even locked in their DNA.

I get this also from the recoiling of Gleick, Hayhoe, Dessler and likely hundreds more of this sect-like group who can’t face disagreement, criticism, other points of view. I now really believe their world is peopled with a fantasia of countless genders, hateful hobgoblins, fear of trigger words, victimhood… maybe Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter weren’t
entertainment to them.

Well, the leftwingnut media chortled with delight at the “glitches” in the Twitter announcement, but they always fail to report factually that the reason Twitter glitched was because its massive servers completely overloaded with attempts to click in. Because to admit that would be to admit that Joe Biden, and any and all other politicians, do not generate the level of interest in Ron Desantis’s campaign.

Yes, it sounds like Twitter’s servers were overloaded with people trying to connect.

Rule of Thumb: Consider everything said by the Leftwing Media to be a lie/distortion until proven otherwise. This will serve you well when searching for the truth.

The Leftwing Media is totally political all the time, so everything they say has a political bias, and in the case of leftwing bias, it is made up mostly of lies and distortions of reality. So beware. The truth is not in the Leftwing Media.

IMO It was almost certainly an overload of the servers.

I used to specialize in scale issues like that. Twitter was never actually very good at scale just for 140-character tweets (I built a system that handled twitter’s current load level back when the “fail whale” was common) – so it wouldn’t surprise me that even in its current state it couldn’t handle that big of a live stream.

That is the way the MSM treats every Republican that they feel is a threat to their socialism goals.

If anyone thinks getting Trump out of the picture is going to stop the drama from the leftwing Media, then they better think again. The principal business of the Leftwing Media is to make Republicans look like Adolf Hitler. If it’s not

The Drama, that so many people blame on Trump, will continue, because the real blame for the Drama lies with the Leftwing Media who mischaracterize everything Trump and other Republicans say, to make them look as bad a possible.

That’s why they say skeptics are paid by the oil companies, to make it appear that skeptics are not sincere in their beliefs but are doing it for the money. Character assassination.

https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2013/09/19/224183763/is-it-racist-to-call-a-spade-a-spade

So time for the “Sticks and Stones Act” Where the federal government DEFENDS everyone’s right NOT have their language usage be declared OFFENSIVE by some liberal.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sticks_and_Stones

Which ends with:

“When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’

’The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’

Answer, liberals have been allowed to make words spoken by decent people, i.e. conservatives to mean something completely different then what the words actually meant.

As a final example, “homeless” is now what “vagrant” was 60 years ago. In both cases, no visible means of support, no place of residence, etc. meaning the person must beg, “borrow” or steal to survive. Liberals have made “the homeless” into a protected “class”, to be honored and praised while trashing the neighborhoods they inhabit and “helping” “the homeless” with federal and local funds have created hundreds of thousands of jobs for equally useless liberals who would otherwise not be employed.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/vagrant

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/homeless

Notice the definition of “homeless” does not include ANYTHING about having, or not having, some source if legal income. i.e. visible means of support.

The “rational leftists” that you are nostalgic about were concerned with things like the material well being of the poor, the marginalized and the working class. Concerns that hardly changed at all in 200 years since the French Revolution. That is now history.

The modern left is espousing ideas that will actively erode the material well being of everyone, especially the poor, the marginalized and the working class (but not, of course, those who go to Davos). They have in fact moved off what used to be the left-right spectrum, in an entirely new direction, presumably because the capitalist system they despised was doing a pretty good job of improving the material well being of the poor, the marginalized and the working class.

Leaving soft lefties like yours truly in what they dismiss as the “far right” camp, along with conservatives, traditionalists and rational thinkers. Where I’m not at all uncomfortable.

The modern left is essentially following the strategy laid out by Antonio Gramsci in the 1930s, i.e. taking control of society from within. Gramsci evolved his ideas while he was in prison in Mussolini’s Italy, but they only started to be applied in practice in the 1960s

The paradox that the modern left faces is that — now that they are well on the way to taking control of society from within — they are driving western societies into something that has a lot in common with Mussolini’s fascism (before he got aligned with the German fellow) in suppressing dissident thoughts and controlling public discourse. Where ordinary folk can carry on their lives as long as they keep their heads down and don’t express forbidden thoughts (like the desire to vote). Where big corporations and authoritarian governments work hand in hand to control how society operates. Where propaganda takes the place of news and indoctrination takes the place of education. Where nations engage in pointless foreign wars.

What unites the old left and the modern left is the one thing that is the core of their belief system – that “they” know what’s good for “us”, and if we don’t like it, they are going to impose it on us. Everything else is just strategy and tactics to achieve that end.

The perpetual shortage of food and consumer goods that was a big feature of the world of 1984 isn’t very apparent yet. It’s being replaced — for now — with a shortage of things to believe in, like our history (nothing but shameful oppression), and our sexuality (think your daughter is a girl and your son is a boy? Think again, you Neanderthaler!). But don’t worry, poverty and hunger are coming, and will dominate your life once we move towards net zero.

See that, MarkW? You provoked me into a rant.

This state, mostly due to the immense influence of Hah-vid, has exported a certain attitude to the world- an attitude of extreme self righteousness and arrogance.

And, of course, MA is a net zero state! And, now a new movement that started here- is called PROFORESTATION, started by Bill Moomaw, who was once an IPCC author. He’s a physical chemist and was a prof at Tuffs. He thinks he understands forests. The goal of this movement is to end all forestry- they don’t say it that way but that’s clearly the goal- to save the planet of course. After all, he has a 4,000+ sq. ft. wood home in elite Williamstown (where Williams College is located). The far left is wrong on just about everything. No wait everything. I often play“ devils advocate” in my inner monologue when analyzing issues, concepts etc; but so many of the policies advocated by leftist are just such none sense that I feel silly giving them any credence at all once I have built up a substantial knowledge base on the particular subject. There is something wrong with their brains.

Their emotions override their brains. It’s all about feelings. They spend decades trying to save the whales and wildlife and the forests, but when their pet alternative energy sources start destroying all of those things, they don’t care one tiny bit. They’re completely irrational.

It’s also about feeling good about themselves.
The actual thought and work that is needed to form a coherent solution that has a chance of actually solving the problem is too draining.
Much simpler to latch onto a simple solution and then spend all your emotional energy supporting that solution.
That way, every night when you go to bed, you can convince yourself that you are one of the good guys who is saving the world.

Of course, any evidence that you have been wasting your time threatens to harsh your mellow, so it most be fought with every fiber of your being.

Climate activism is taboo in most of the world. That it seems globally “popular” is an illusion created in western press. It is not covered in foreign domestic press. If academics are unable to understand this, their self-imposed island is isolation has caused them to lose perspective.

Climate activists don’t hang out in places where there are people who disagree with them.
This causes them to actually start believing that everyone agrees with them.

I’m reminded of that lady from NYC who, after Nixon won is a 49 state landslide, declared
“I don’t know how he could have won. Nobody I know voted for him.”

Might the decline in likes and retweets have as much to do with Twitter’s crackdown on fake accounts. I suspect climate radicals were behind many of those.

“Hate and misinformation” are words so overused and abused they no longer mean anything when used by the Left.

Every couple of hours randomly browsing Twitter, I see conservatives being compared with n@zis, fascists, KKK…
And I am not using search on such loaded words. Just clicking on the first replies to a given tweet, etc.

SOME climate scientists. The impact-losers had had the undisclosed veto squads actively suppressing anyone who disagreed with them. If they’d understood the wisdom of our Constitution-writers, they’d have vigorously engaged and publicly debated with those scientists who held other viewpoints. By the requirements of the scientific method, that’s how you play the game and come closest to truth. But no, their friends among the Feds and Universities had elbowed their way backstage at Twitter and loaded the dice to support the politically-favored, grant-enjoying ‘Earth is Burning!’ side, and ensured the shutting-up the critics of said losers.

I had in mind that the eponymous James Gleick wrote Chaos, which introduced Chaos and Complexity Theory and the Butterfly Effect to the public. Of course, perhaps an antithesis to Peter Gleick, since it really undermines the basis for climate modelling.

It has become impossible to merely “disagree” with anyone on the left.
All disagreement is because one is a racist, sexist, or simply a hater.
I’ve also noticed that very few people are racists anymore. It’s always “white supremacist” these days. Even blacks can be white supremacists when they disagree with white liberals.

Since Musk took over Twitter, I’ve regained over 300 Tweeters about Propagation… The number had eroded away over three years, after an initial strong surge in 2019.

The Tweets have come back in amazing surges. First the Germans appeared — about 3 weeks ago 100 in one day. Then, just a few days ago, more than 100 Italian tweets appeared overnight.

I get the feeling that previous shadow-banning is being lifted regionally, as Musk’s new directives about free speech and open access spread through the company.

Gleick’s complaints, and Hayhoe’s and Dessler’s and Mann’s are the hand-wringing of the entitled who have suddenly had their privileges revoked.

Most likely their falling attention follows the removal of climate-approving bots. After all, all their prior admirers are still present. Were real people providing support, they’d rush to their hero’s defense. The present silence speaks volumes about the past noise.

So, I’m guessing that the angst among the alarmist coterie is their response to the realization that they’re not popular after all.

And having been entitled, the influx of the ordinary feels to them like abuse.

Twitter makes it very east to fact-check baseless claims. That is a problem for alarmists who depend on public ignorance for status.

In general the public seems to be better informed because at some point, everyone has noticed that the prophecies of doom have failed to materialize. Not only that, things are often going in the opposite direction.

When confronted by a solid rejection of some baseless claim or twisted fact, these “scientists” used to be able to throw their toys out of the cot and scream “deniers”. No longer. People can easily provide contradicting evidence that shows for the most part, gloom and doom is nothing more than computer modelling reported without the error bars. The more educated people are in general, the more they understand that a prediction of a 4 degree temperature rise in 80 years with 1% confidence is scientifically meaningless.

Also look for a switch from risk to relative risk. That is how Pfizer reported the efficacy of their now famous COVID shot. Relative Risk (RR) makes a comparison between two insignificant risks making the reduction look important. It is akin to claiming a % temperature change in Kelvins v.s. anomalies in F.

All students should be aware of these tricks by the time they get to Grade 10. Scientists whose trade is fear are discovering that even students are calling out their fanciful fantasies, their provocative prognostications, their WAGS. Shame….the demotion couldn’t be more deserved.

Point of Order: “Verklempt” is an esoteric Yiddish term meaning a deep sense of
confusion, depression, and loss of self-control over a profoundly negative (or
sometimes positive!) turn of events. It is supposed to refer to the deepest values of
the human soul. To evoke such a term in describing the “loss” felt by spoiled,
name-calling brats facing, at last, criticism because they demand the rest of the
world stop in the face of their massively disassociated delusions, and who are more
than disposed to initiate force against all those who so criticize their alarmism, is
wildly inappropriate. They feel threatened, lonely, and vulnerable because they are
being refuted by opponents merely challenging their lies (for which challenges they
have no meaningful response)?  And they thus, instead, throw tantrums? That’s their
problem, not ours. On the contrary, to show them any official, widespread sympathy
should make any decent man feel verklempt at such a showing. Such a term much better
describes our loss than theirs.
