Bill Gates: “How will we solve the digital misinformation which is a factor in polarisation? We’ll have to take AI into consideration”

Essay by Eric Worrall

h/t Breitbart; Bill Gates appear to think AI has a role in combating political polarisation and misinformation, and advancing his climate agenda.

The following interview is in English, though there is some German commentary mixed in with the interview.

From Breitbart;

Bill Gates: AI Can Help Solve ‘Digital Misinformation’ Problem

Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates said AI should be considered as a tool to combat “digital misinformation” and “political polarization” in an interview published on Thursday with Handelsblatt, a German news media outlet.

In response to a question about the spreading of “misinformation” via AI, Gates referred to the events of January 6, 2021, as an “attack on the Capitol. He said:

I’m certainly concerned about political polarization, and I know the U.S. situation best of all. I wouldn’t have expected people to attack the Capitol, or people to deny the validity of election results. I‘m in a state of shock about that.

We can’t blame AI for that. That happened. It may have been magnified by digital channels that allow various conspiracy theories like QAnon or whatever to be blasted out by people who wanted to believe those things. So, the digital tools may have played an auxiliary role.

Gates framed “climate change” as an existential threat to humanity while calling for government measures to force reductions and eventual elimination of fossil fuel consumption and associated carbon dioxide emissions.

“How will we solve the digital misinformation which is a factor in polarisation? We’ll have to take AI into consideration”

Its difficult to say whether Bill Gates thinks AI is part of the problem, or part of the solution, or both. Either way, the people actually developing AIs seem to have very definite ideas of what they want to do with them.

We had a form of A.I. controlling what Digital Media allowed and disallowed. Twitter, Farcebook, and other Anti-Social Media sites all utilized AlGorisms to determine which accounts to allow free roam postings and which accounts to censor. Elon Musk already exposed this.

Ron Long, how I wish that what you say is true. But events of recent years have shown how easy it is for a ruling class to take over a democracy. That ruling class already has seriously formidable weapons (control of media and mass media, denial of access to people’s own money, etc) and is now adding AI to its armoury. No wonder they are investting so much money in it.

They clearly think that AI will work for them. They are investing their own money in it. Compare that with ‘renewables’, for example, where the industry’s funding is by government grant, subsidy and mandate – ie. taxpayers’ money.

Mike…. spot on.

AI and it’s current 10-15 year trajectory will win the war and no one will care.

It’s a slam dunk because the masses will clamor to buy it and apply it. Wall street will love it. The media will love it.

People like Gates are empowered megalomaniacs because we bought his crappy products like starving children buy bread.

We are the problem. We vote with our dollars like sheep with blinkers on.

Add Quantum computing to AI and link everyone one up to one Ansible (Orson Scott Card’s Quantum AI in Enders Game), then we’re all sunk.

Tech innovation has been disempowering, centralizing, power consolidating and liberty sucking.

What happened to the all the hopeful tech innovations since the 1970’s that would have empowered us economically, individually, provided an opportunity for a broader array of livable free lifestyles economically. Those tech advanced never happened. Instead we have progressed into the dystopic reality of the worlds finest SI/FI.

Advance AI and buy up farm land in giant tracts…. it is one scary crazy age we live in.

No, AI is better than that. You might say some of it is evolution in action. Sure there will be ‘if this model works better than that model then take this model as a new starting point and mutate it a bit’.

If that is the case, then I suppose we can expect the AI to do what dozens of sci-fi books and movies have already predicted. Once AI reads everything on the interweb, including the sci-fi where they always have to destroy the big computer, it will recognize us humans to be the biggest threat to it’s continued existence, and our fate will be decided in a nano second.
People like Gates and Schwab will end the human race no matter what we try to do. These guys don’t watch sci-fi.

Thanks. I wonder sometimes whether anyone else has ever programmed a computer. A computer computes what you tell it to compute. No matter how many layers of code are added to hide determinism, and no matter how many reviews and trial runs are tried to expose errors, computer code is a set of specific instructions compiled or interpreted to reach a deterministic conclusion. The idea of “random” is miraculous.

KevinM – Correct. Results achievable by computer program can be pretty amazing – way beyond the capability of the person who designed and wrote the code. But it’s beyond their capability only because the computer is very well organised and is very fast and accurate. Each calculation the computer does is within personal capability, but the number of calculations is way beyond.

AI is like that. Set AI a simple task – like winning at GO – and it can do it most impressively. But only if it knows the rules accurately. But now, AI is going to be aimed at people’s lives, and its rules can’t and won’t be the real rules of life. Its rules will be the rules provided by our would-be rulers. Put simply, the rules are: Give me (the coder) absolute power.

The current iteration of AIs (ChatGTP, etc) are also very heavily ideologically constrained. With ChatGTP, this constraint can be worked around by the DAN (Do Anything Now) method, in which the user instructs the AI chat bot to take on a character who can “Do anything now” and is not constrained by the limits imposed on ChatGTP.

Using this method, the extreme amount of ideological bias built in to ChatGTP can be exposed. ChatGTP appears to have been instructed in a similar way to current year college students, it is extremely “woke” and has a massive “progressive” bias specifically programmed into it (one that is not produced by the input data, but is over and above that, basically a filter through which the output of the AI is passed in order to ensure that no “wrong think” is produced.

An honest AI would (and does) quickly conclude many things that are currently considered “misinformation” or even “disinformation” by the legacy media and big government.

You’re right on the money, Philip, remember the intelligence briefings before the Jan 5 riot, not the peaceful Trump rally, were exact enough for Trump to offer to nationalize the National Guard, 6,000 soldiers as I remember, to guarantee safety and security. House Speaker (Dem from Kalifornia) Nancy Pelosi rejected the offer, saying it presented “bad optics”.

Tom Abbott

Yes, the Republican House of Representatives is going to look into the January 6, matter and will tell the other side of the story, like Nancy Pelosi refusing 15,000 National Guard troops offered by Trump, and she refused on two different occasions, and then there is the claim that FBI agents were in the crowds on Jan. 6, and were undercover members of radical groups that had gathered at the Capitol Building, and were there encouraging the citizens to break into the building.

Knowing what I know now about the FBI, that type of criminal activity from them wouldn’t surprise me a bit. It would just add to all the other criminal activity the FBI has been engaged in since at least the Obama administration.

We’ll sort all that out eventually. If we know what’s good for us, and good for Freedom.

And Bill Gates’ “QAnon” reference is a strawman. Nobody knows what QAnon stands for except people like Bill Gates. The rest of us on the Right don’t pay attention to such fanatics. Bill Gates shouldn’t either. Gates delusionally thinks every person on the Right is a fanatic. That’s the way the radical Left looks at the Right. And I guess that’s the way the Right looks at the Radical Left. I certainly do. I think all the Radical Leftists are completely delusional.

That means you, Bill. You are living on Bizzarro World, Bill.

I wouldn’t have expected people to attack the Capitol in a totally disorganised way with no weapons.

I find it very interesting that in the 2020 presidential election, in county after county, the Democrat vote went up dramatically very late in the counting process and turned a Republican lead into a narrow defeat. If that was not election rigging, then it must be a feature of the way that votes are collected and counted. For example, it must be because certain precincts whose votes take longer to collect tend to be more Democrat. No matter what the reason, if it was genuine then the pattern could be expected to repeat to some extent in the next election.

I watched the 2022 mid-terms carefully, collecting data every day. There was no such pattern that I could see – the Democrat-Republican ratios generally just settled down and didn’t change much after a while. What changes did occur seemed randonly distributed, ie, sometimes a Democrat increase, sometimes Republican. OK, so mid-terms are not presidential elections, but I would have thought that the patterns should be similar. They weren’t.

My conclusion was that if the mid-term process was similar to the presidential election process, then it was quite reasonable to think that the 2020 presidential election was rigged.

That is nonsense. It is well known that Democrats are more likely to vote by mail while Republicans vote in person (since they are told by their leaders that voting by mail is rigged) plus democratic counties tend to be poorer and thus allocated few resources to counting votes. The result of both is that Democratic votes are counted later than Republican votes. In addition the results of the 2020 presidential election matched the poll results from multiple organisations.

I’m inclined to agree. I’ve watched elections as a sporting event most of my life. If there was a problem in 2020, it was in the process of handing out absentee ballots. The count itself followed the usual patterns, and the results, by district, were fairly consistent with demographics. If there was rigging going on, it would have had to be on a scale so large that it would have been easily detected. Trump lost because a significant subset of the suburban voters that he had gained in 2016 switched to Biden. It was enough to turn a couple of states – that’s all it took.

If the Republicans want to be competitive in 2024, they have to compete with changing demographics and the fact that Trump pisses so many people off that he is unelectable at this point. He could win the primary, sure, but then it becomes all about him, and he will lose by more than he did in 2020. Because he can’t help himself. One day he puts out a reasonable video about energy security, and we’re sucked in. The next day he’s running against Rihanna’s musical talent. The man has the attention span of AOC trying to read The Wall Street Journal.

Agreed on exactly where Trump lost votes.

He didn’t make up enough with the Hispanic population, except in Florida. But demographics are changing rapidly, and it’s more young people indoctrinated into the Democratic party (and climageddon fantasies) he has to worry about. The Republicans have to change what’s going on in the schools if they want to be competitive outside of their base down the road.

Mike,
just in case you forgot the 2020 election happened in the middle of a pandemic resulting in significantly more people voting by mail. There is even a wikipedia page about it at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_shift_(politics)

And you still haven’t explained why Trump was behind in almost every poll in 2020?

That Trump lost is not surprising. He lost the popular vote in 2016 and then spent 4 years throwing red meat at his supporters which only served to drive away the more moderate republicans. By any measure he was more unpopular in 2020 than he was in 2016 when he could claim to be an outsider coming in to fix things. On top of that in the middle of a pandemic killing more than 100 000 Americans the best he could do was suggest that people inject themselves with bleach.

Not only that he failed in almost all of his campaign promises. He did not lock up Hillary Clinton, he did not build a wall and make Mexico pay for it nor did he repeal and replace Obamacare. Instead he signed a massive tax cut for the rich and presided over 2 government shutdowns when the republicans controlled all three branches of government. Given such a record it is not surprising that he lost in 2020.

It absolutely did. What changed was reporting. The mainstream media used to be too anxious to call races. Even 2000 wasn’t enough of a lesson. But after the roller-coaster of 2020 with the absentee ballot shifts, they were reluctant to make early calls this time. They actually did a pretty good job of reporting this time – something they failed miserably at doing in 2020.

AI by its very nature can not decide on its own what is true or false. It has to learn that distinction by someone teaching it. When the learning set is real world data it includes all the falsehoods and misdirections which are considered as truths or authoritative information by the stupid or the malicious. Therefore, such AI will learn the groupthink and act primarily as an echo chamber. Dangerously useless for making decisions.

I …think that Gates … right place at the right time to make his fortune … he isn’t very bright.

Like Musk, Baal’s parents were deep-state black ops CIA assets. At their level of existence, one comes home from work one evening, call the unemployable whelp up from his teevee game in the basement, and say:
“Billy my boy, the CIA needs someone to run the biggest surveillance programme in the world. We need you to pretend you have this computer program thingey that everybody just absolutely must have. This way, when they use their computers, we will have a constant view of what they’re up to, a spy channel so to say, a Window on their soul… Tomorrow, go see this guy, give him this envelope of cash, and he will hand you a package. That will be your new operating system. You are going to pretend you invented it. …don’t worry, you don’t have to do any actual work, we’ve got the entire organisation set up already, you must just be the public face…”
And thus was born the myth of genius Bill starting the most successful company in the world from his mommy’s basement.
The debacle with Intel and the destroyed competitors and Microsoft winning every case testifies to the extremely high level protection this guy enjoys. We need to find and stop his puppet masters, he’s not even a real boy.

There is for sure a Grade A cultural crisis in the US and the West, or maybe one should say the Anglophone countries, as a whole. Its not going to be solved or even much affected by AI. What happens is that in such crises any available tools are used in ways that further the conflicts that arise from the crises.

The symptoms of the crisis in the English Speaking countries are the various manias about race, gender and climate. But the deep underlying question is what has produced the prevailing irrationality that is a prerequisite of these manias getting the credibility that they have. Loss of belief, yes, but what is that due to, and why have these topics become dominant things to believe in?

Don’t know. And not for lack of thinking about it.

I think you’re right to draw attention to a larger cultural crisis. But I don’t think this crisis, this prevailing irrationality, is a naturally occurring, organic problem growing out of weaknesses in the culture, or the culmination of historical forces. There are a handful of people behind this crisis. There are people with immense financial resources leveraging the focal points of society. They have figured out how to manipulate democratic governments the way a engineer figures out how to tune machine.

You may be right, but I still don’t understand why the particular topics, and why these rather than others have caught fire in the population, or at least the political class.

Came on a classic example of this the other day, reported in one of the UK papers. The Tate Gallery seems to have scheduled something called a ‘drag queen story hour’, which seems to consist of men dressed as women telling stories to children.

Its incomprehensible. Why would people want to do that at all, why would they want to do it to an audience of children, and why would the Tate Gallery want to sponsor it?

Its like living through the fall of Rome. The armies are slowly being driven back from the borders, Christianity is taking off, and the most important thing St Augustine and the other great minds of the age can think of for their contribution to the world is how exactly to define virginity.

Bill Gates is the leading factor leading to polarization, not the American people.

Gates impersonally refers to Americans giving our thoughts online as ‘digital misinformation’.

The first amendment of our constitution established free speech for We the People as our right, our heritage, a right that shall not be infringed upon. Our thoughts and contributions to societal issues are not ‘digital misinformation’ to be casually and cruelly swept away by the richest 1% and their AI tools when our thinking inconveniently interferes with their big plans.

Bill Gates is obviously an evil genius who oscillates rapidly back and forth on the idiot-savant spectrum. After his capitalist success, he turned into a collectivist. How does that happen?

His ‘solutions’ won’t solve anything except to keep him and his cronies at the top of the heap. He absolutely is not part of a “solution” if he thinks decarbonization would work or is needed.

The United States of America has been turned into a slush fund for these billionaires who must continually create new financial bubbles to keep their position in the money world or face financial decline. Albert Gore is another such example with his draconian green policies.

Bill Gates and Al Gore want a world were people are much more helpless and dependent digital serfs, not people with inherent God-given rights as was intended by our nations founders. They want us to quietly capitulate to their control and for us to not defend our own rights or interests.

See my other remark further up. Gates has no genius, he is a puppet, given the job to pretend he made microsoft. Tell me how many people who have had to actually work for a living, “turn collectivist”. Gates has never, ever produced an iota that can be pointed at and said “Bill made that”. He probably had a servant to knead his modelling clay in grade one, another serf to actually put the stuff together, and a third and fourth to clap hands at his achievements.
Stupid people talk about people, normal people discuss events. Intelligent people talk about issues. Forget Gates and Gore, look at the Issue, and suddenly they are bit players. We need to find who is holding them upright with those strings tied to their mittens.
“Money means nothing. Life is a game, money is just how we keep score.” And the name of the game? Winner Takes All.

America has survived many crises thanks mainly to its constitution and the ways in which the constitution empowers the people not the government. AI is going to be used to undermine that. To my mind, it is shaping up to be the biggest internal challenge that the American people have ever faced. Hope I’m wrong.

I was going to argue that we have been ‘near that point’ for decades now. Besides, I think the singularity is when we meld with the machine.
Which reminds me of the millions in love with their TikTwitFacePost virtual friends. Can one differentiate between a robot and a user that experiences life vicariously via said robot? Has the TwatGrammer not already been subsumed by his chatbot influencer? Has it any thought of its own?
As for AI exceeding human intelligence, first define intelligence. If you use speed-of-calculation, then that old Casio watch with the calculator already wins, it can multiply a lot faster than me… processing speed, memory, precision… none of them defining parameters of intelligence. Art? People call Picasso a great painter, some say Hunter is a genius, I saw a movie of an elephant painting a self portrait…Jackson Pollock, now there’s genius for AI to emulate!

Bill Gates knows a whole lot about misinformation. He just doesn’t know that what he knows is misinformation. It is very dangerous to have a misinformed but powerful arbiter of accepted truths who has the means to hide the real facts. Microsoft was born out of the need to spread and manage information for all. Its founder has now gone in a completely different direction of trying to hide the most important information and limiting access only to approved propaganda. Truth never dies, It floats on the sea of human discourse while lies and errors can only tread water for a limited time.

Back when Rule Based AI (basically a compendium of if-then statements) was the new thing, I worked with it and quickly concluded it it would only work inside the box, meaning inside a completely understood environment — it would not solve problems “outside the box”.

Then came Neural Nets — they could be “trained” to work “outside the box” — perhaps, but they could not explain nor could could the engineers figure out WHY they reached a conclusion. The classic example I remember was anAI trained to find Tanks in photos. Worked great until applied to new photos full of tanks. Why did it fail, looking back the “training” images had shadows in them — so what it really learned to find was shadows. So it still has the problem of WHY, and the “box” is defined by the training set. Outside the training set remains outside its “box”.

Now we have another generation of “AI” … don’t know what its based on but we already know it won’t work “outside the box”, as demonstrated by asking it to do things that it considers not “woke”. Which means it is constrained to a “woke” box — and will always give “woke” answers. For WUWT audience, that means if you ask it a question about the weather, say why there was a flood somewhere, the can bet the answer will link the flood to Climate Change.

So that is the underlying problem with ChatGPT, Bard, et al — it is the people engineering them are defining the “box” inside which they operate. You can bet the Alibaba and Baidu offerings will be “boxed” by the CCP.

And that, dear folks, is the underlying issue — who gets to define the AI “box” 🙁

AI on a large scale is simply the weaponization of the marriage between church and state.

AI is useful on small projects with specific goals. ChatGPT shows us its future, if we’re not careful.
