Essay by Eric Worrall
I was in the room when former Aussie PM Tony Abbott said “I am a climate skeptic” at the last Aussie CPAC, and received wild applause from the audience. He joins a growing list of politicians, academics and environmental activists who have come to realize there is no risk of catastrophic climate change and believe that to the extent temperatures may rise civilization is entirely capable of adapting, as it has to the severe changes in climate that has occurred over the past 11,000 years. Former prime minister Abbott joins over 45 academics and policy makers at the GWPF.
Tony Abbott, former Australian prime minister, joins the GWPF
London, 6 February – Tony Abbott, former prime minister of Australia, has joined the Board of Trustees of the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF).
Tony Abbott was Australian prime minister from 2013 to 2015 and served as the member of the Australian parliament from 1994 to 2019. He is a director of the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation, serves on the council of the Australian War Memorial, and is an adviser to the UK Board of Trade. He is patron to several charities, including Soldier On, the International Sports Promotion Society, and Worldwide Support for Development.
Dr Jerome Booth, the GWPF chairman, said:
“I am delighted to welcome Tony Abbott onto the board of the Global Warming Policy Foundation. As a former prime minister, he brings a global perspective and policy insight at the very highest level. He will further assist our objectives and help our efforts to foster a culture of debate, respect and scrutiny in policy areas that are currently dominated by intolerance, high emotions, moral reasoning and confusion.”
Tony Abbott said:
“I’m pleased to be joining GWPF because it’s consistently injected a note of realism into the climate debate. All of us want to save the only planet we have but this should not be by means which impoverish poorer people in richer countries and hold poorer countries back. Right now, in countries like Australia, the impact of climate policy is to make electricity less affordable and less reliable rather than perceptibly to cool the planet. We need more genuine science and less groupthink in this debate – that’s where the GWPF has been a commendably consistent if lonely voice.”

One thing I found fascinating about the last CPAC is a senior conservative who on stage appeared to be a centrist, but in private admitted they wanted Tony Abbott back.
I wonder how many other Aussie conservative politicians yearn for the days when they could show their face at CPAC without getting booed by the audience for their weak policy positions?
Appeasement just looks dishonest. Honesty is a rare and valued trait in politics.
If Tony Abbott ever throws his hat into the ring again, the green extremists who currently run Australia will have a real fight on their hands. Last time Australia had a carbon tax, Tony Abbott delivered a landslide victory for conservatives, against the incumbent Green Labor coalition.
Antipodean ex PM’s joining up! We will be having Jacinda Aderne clamouring at the door next. Tell her to go and boil her head – and that is the TRUTH.
I cannot imagine Ardern clamouring to do anything except those things which might advance her Marxist leanings. And in the unlikely instance that that were to happen, the vast majority of New Zealanders would merely smile and look away. Her response would undoubtedly be to go travelling, possibly to the United Nations, which would delight most of us!
I can’t speak to Tony Abbotts’ real beliefs or intentions but converting an organization to the enemy’s benefit by burrowing within and gradually modifying its beliefs and directions is a real thing.
This is good news. Alarmism is becoming ever more unhinged.
“”Climate Change Saved Europe From Putin This Winter
…but the respite may prove fleeting if—perhaps when—those same climate changes cause a crisis this summer. “”
Remember when they used to say weather isn’t climate?
The absolute hysteria in the UK last summer over the hot weather was something to behold. And it was really no more than a week or ten days of the kinds of temps that the Brits commonly fly south in search of every summer.
We shall see what happens this summer. Probably every time it reaches 70F we will hear calls to stay indoors, close the curtains, drink iced fluids…. And then winter will come, temps will fall to close to freezing, and then we are told to stay indoors, draw the curtains…..
The Daily Mirror calls anything over 20C a heat wave. It is currently 22 C here in Marble Falls Texas ( northwest of Austin) Feb 7
As noted previously, i was in London those 2 really hot days in the high 30s, i failed to notice bodies in the streets although i did see a lot of people out in the park enjoying it.
The British Museum went full woke stupid by closing the upper floor, and then closing the whole building at 3pm both days due to “heat warning”. In practice this meant closing the nice cool stone building and forcing all including young, old, pregnant and overweight outside where it was almost 40C.
BS (beyond Stupid).
Oh, and it was a dry heat, then Wednesday the temp dropped below 30C but the humidity shot up and that day was far more uncomfortable than the Monday Tuesday hot days.
And here in Perth, Western Australia we have now had one year without a 40C day. How’s that for an anomaly. 😉
“Former Aussie PM Tony Abbott Joins the London Based Global Warming Policy Foundation”
The global scientific community trembles….
No one trembles when you comment.
So there is that.
I’m not an ex-Aussie PM.
We’re all perfectly aware of what you are.
You are nothing but a tiny blot on the page. !
“The global scientific community trembles….”
Yes we all know they are petrified of anyone intelligent and able to raise their voice to be heard.. !
Yeah, that’ll be it.
Glad to see you recognising the facts. !
Must be a first for you. !
The real scientific community (i.e. those who properly practise the scientific method), would look askance at the “climate scientists” and say –
“what? those posers!”
Short and (not exactly) sweet
“Climate change is crap.”
Given how useless Tony Abbot has been as a post-brexit trade envoy for the UK (it currently has the slowest post covid growth of any country in the G20 and is forecast to have negative growth in 2023 ) it is hard to see why this announcement is anything to celebrate unless you want the GWPF to fail.
So Izaak, will you be canceling your membership of the GWPF?
The annual GDP growth rate of UK is 1.9%, a sample of other G20 countries: US 1.0%, Japan -0.2%, Germany 1.1%, France 0.5%, Russia -3.7%, Italy 1.7% (Trading Economics).
If anyone knows anything about self-generated FAILURE .. it would be you.
Is it your middle name ?
Excellent news. But I take issue with Mr Abbott when he said “All of us want to save the only planet we have”. The planet will be just fine, humanity may extinct itself, but the planet will look after itself.
Good news. Having a strong voice and clarity of message is a big boost for GWPF. It means too that politicians who are unsure of themselves in tackling the issues have someone they can consult on the dimension of politics rather than science: how to use politics to champion truth in science, rather than kowtowing to the “consensus”. Tice, Farage, Badenoch, Trump – all could learn.
If he manages to grab back the coalition and lead it to a political victory that would be a marvellous political beacon for others. Meanwhile his role in coaching others will be vital, and his willingness to be publicly outspoken about Lysenkoist pronouncements is equally important.
The repeal of the carbon tax in late 2013 gave all-too-brief relief from skyrocketing electricity costs that could have at least stabilized if Abbott had not been undermined in 2015 behind his back by that turd Turnbull.
This is momentous. A former politician of significant stature willing to speak the truth openly and join the brethren of independent thinkers, rather than trying to “lead” by “following” ill-informed fashion.
Unfortunately, the left will just brush him off as a denier Eric. Despite the fact he will bring balance to the debate…. Izzak Walton and TFN have already confirmed that.
No I want to brush him off as an incompetent fool. There was a reason why he was replaced as prime minister by the Liberal party in 2015 and that was simply that he wasn’t a very good prime minister. Similarly he has had no effect as trade envoy for the UK. There are far too many failed politicians around who seem to do nothing except rake in excessive appearance fees for speaking and Tony Abbott does not offer anything special.
Anyway if he wasn’t a ‘denier’ then he wouldn’t have joined the GWPF so that would appear to be an essential job qualification.
You have no idea…. Only fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others…. You should try it some time Izaak.
What precisely does he “deny” Izaak?
(As your heroine Senator Pauline Hanson would say – “please explain”)
Well in 2009 he stated that “‘We can’t conclusively say whether man-made carbon dioxide emissions are contributing to climate change.” So unless he
has changed he position he is effectively denying that human caused CO2 emissions are changing the climate.
And he’d be right.
You of course have a confirmed empirical observation that proves that the AGW / CO2 as climate control knob conjecture (not even a proper hypothesis) holds up to any & all scrutiny?
““‘We can’t conclusively say whether man-made carbon dioxide emissions are contributing to climate change.””
So, he is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT !
There is basically zero scientific evidence to support the fallacy of CO2 warming..
How does that make him a “denier”.
More of a REALIST, wouldn’t you say !.
PM Abbott was replaced by the “miserable ghost” Turnbull, who continues to try to be relevant long after he was sacked by making stupid comments in the press. Abbott was a far, far better PM than Turnbull, and even the next PM Morrison.
“No I want to brush him off as an incompetent fool.”
Like everybody here KNOWS that you are. ?
Sorry, but TA has several magnitudes of competence more than you would ever be capable of. !
And he is NOT a denier.. because there is no evidence to back up the fairy tale of CO2 warming
Its like asking someone to believe a Grimm Bros fairy-tale… like you apparently would… not having the slightest scientific competence to tell the difference between fiction and reality..
You claimed that the UK had the worst GDP growth of the developed countries, whereas, as Chris Hanley pointed out, in actual fact it has a better growth rate than the US, Italy, Germany, Japan etc. Were you lying or merely misinformed?
I’m guessing that Abbott is getting a good return for selling his scepticism and joining the global climate shell game.
ALL the money is on the Alarmist side. Abbott won’t be making a penny on this gig.
This game is all about the money. $650 taxpayer paid billions is up for grabs every year. Organized alarmist or denier, it’s all grasping hands and zero accomplishment.
“If Tony Abbott ever throws his hat into the ring again, ”
The gate seems to be closing on opportunities to vote a genuine tory into a majority government anywhere. The totalitarian ‘left’ propaganda and bag of tricks keeping the right out of power has been formidably effective. In Europe, the multiplicity of parties to cajole into coalitions makes it close to impossible for the right to get in, even with a party leader that obtains the highest number of votes. Didn’t La Penn beat Macron with something like 42% of the popular vote?
Look at the UK. There are no boundaries separating the policies of Tory and Labour. Everyone but the Brits themselves are all-in on a totalitarian ticket. The Democrat machine has millions of people prepared to twist and break the rules and laws to win an election. Consistent with their idea of science, that twists and cooks the data to be what they would like it to be, winning an election hook, crook, enlisting dead voters, whatever it takes, a win is a win.
If someone on the right looks like a possible threat to the them, they have Alt Right, racist, natsi, supremacist labels at the ready. They use court cases, cooked up charges of sexual assault etc, and they have the full support of a corrupt press to spread the calumny and growing minions of de-educated people to believe it. Ronald Reagan would today be thought to be all of the above.
“Didn’t La Penn beat Macron with something like 42% of the popular vote?”
No. She did get 41.5%. But Macron got 58.5%.
We can recall Viscount Monckton writing in early 2015 that Prime Minister Harper of Canada and Prime Minister Abbott from Australia would be out of office by the end of that year. The IPCC Paris Agreement was 15th December 2015. Money was probably involved in the removal of these inconvenient PMs before the Paris talks.
Many of us doubted the influence of big money on national election results before this happened. There are lessons to be learned about corruption of the political process, but we are now in a difficult time when these is an excess of show-off wealth/power by bodies like Klaus Schwab mob and the USA Democrat left wing.
Real democracy is in crisis. I have no answer about how to normalise it. Voters seem to get mesmerised the way that chooks go silly when faced by a hungry snake. Geoff S
