Well.. at the beginning he says something like “he believes there is a climate emergency” without any reflection as to why that would be true and much later he says he does not know what to do about it (the only smart thing.. the rest is neither original nor funny IMHO)..

So overall he seems to be very much part of the problem than the solution.. (an uninformed man making money telling flat jokes to more uninformed people) is it really that difficult to learn even the basic arguments sceptics have?

Most people have no scientific understanding or education to make a personal call on whether climate change is real or not. It’s an argument amongst the educated that unfortunately affects everyone, regardless of which set of experts one believes.

His admission—like his comments re covid and identity politics—are small chinks in the climate terrorists’ armor. I count these things, large or small, as small victories—they give me bits of hope.

Annnnd…. still calls it an emergency. 40+ years of an emergency proves there is no emergency.

I blame recycling.
They keep throwing the same “Emergency” into the computer-bin.
When the same “Emergency” is pulled out, we have a new “Expiration Date”.

It’s good to see Mr. Maher when he has been ‘red pilled’ but, never forget Mr. Maher is part of the socialist culture that brought us to the point that we are now at.

Maher has been calling out wokesters quite a lot lately – good for him. But he has bought into climate change hysteria 100% apparently not recognizing it is based on the same anti-capitalist virtue signaling wokeiness as all the other loony nonsense he loves to attack. I’d love to see him have Steve Koonin, Alex Epstein or Michael Shellenberger on his show – but that might get him canceled.

He buys into what he’s told by the experts .. or at least by some of them. One cannot blame a comedian for not having a PhD level of understanding of how the earth’s climate actually works … hell, a way too large percentage of people with PhDs don’t really understand it – they just take the popular experts’ word for it.

Reply to  Duane

It doesn’t take a PhD, or even a college degree to puzzle through the big picture and reach a reasonable position. Life experience, inquisitiveness, basic geographic knowledge and a little arithmetic (maybe algebra) can enable many climate laypersons, from doctors to garbage collectors, to see through the CAGW “climate emergency” scam. Maher, despite his efforts to appear otherwise, is just a tool of totalitarians.

He mentioned plastic – Aus provided a lovely example recently.

Following ESG rules, Woolworths collected up 5,000+ tonnes of waste soft plastic ‘for recycling’
But, being some sort of government scheme, it all went pear-shaped and Woolies are now stuck with the stuff.
So, after all the costs of assembling this pile, Woolies are now told that it’s a ‘Fire Risk’ have to spend AUD3.5 Million to either bury the stuff or export it.

at which point does ‘stupid’ become ‘malice’
at which point does the ‘stupid junk’ that is ‘climate science’ do likewise

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/feb/03/coles-and-woolworths-ordered-to-dump-more-than-5200-tonnes-of-recycled-soft-plastic-in-landfill

edit to ‘slow on the uptake’
at which point does that pile of plastic become a metaphor for climate science, esg and the whole other rest of it?
its near perfect innit

Thanks for the link. If we can’t manage the recycling of basic plastic materials, how are we going to manage the recycling of batteries, solar panels, and windmills?

Recycling waste, in general, is a major problem, world-wide. It should be addressed with more urgency. At least, in Australia, individuals can be fined for littering, but that doesn’t really solve the problem if the plastic bottle they refrained from discarding, still ends up in landfill.

What’s wrong with landfills? They are perfect places to keep the stuff you don’t want littering the landscape. Pulling off methane is another positive. Plus, we might just be mining them in the future.

Personally I favor putting all our refuse into volcanoes. Things would either disintegrate or get encapsulated. Lots of volcanoes and we already transport trash via ocean barrages all over the world.

while I don’t expect to see it happen, waste plastic would make a good fuel to burn and generate much needed reliable electricity.

I looked for info to see if was connected to the old US F.W. Woolworths.
(I only spent about 10 minutes or so.)
The last thing I saw seemed to say that the name “Woolworths” was legally open for use in some countries (Australia) since the name “F.W. Woolworths” may have been registered, the name “Woolworths” was not.
(Again, a quick search and a quick scan of what I found.)
So the name was “recycled”. Now they’re stuck with it. 😎

He has been pretty good about calling out hypocrisy, and I don’t mind his anti-Trump, anti-right-wing bent because I think he does it for good reason.

I think it’s likely that CNN lined up their money truck for him with the caveat that he start aiming his cannon at “climate denial”. It’s the last shtick left for CNN, which has thrown away any semblance of journalism in the last decade or so. If someone starts pointing out they’ve got nothing with the climate issue, too, it’s probably the end of the line for Ted Turner’s baby.

So, no hope that Maher suddenly starts lampooning the breathless claims that our world is on fire and we’ve got only one year (it’s always only one year, forever magically replenishing) to save the planet.

For that matter, few of the reasonable middle-grounders are willing to touch climate. I think they know the young are thoroughly indoctrinated and we might as well ride it out (in the dark, cold, eating bugs and genetically modified avocado toast).

CNN arrived on my shore in 2000. They were still CNN on 11 Sept 2001. On 12 Sept they began to change. It was the fourteenth, I think, that some smug little twerp appeared on my screen and announced unto my heathen ass the proclamation that disbelief in the official explanation for 911 amounts to blasphemy.
I have never watched CNN again, but I doubt your assertion about the last decade, you could not possibly imply there was a ‘down’ to go, after that.

“What would that good reason be?” To be fair Tom, Trump has had a few swipes at Maher over the years. But even that aside Trump is fair game like all politicians are to comedians. And Trump is an extreme person which makes him highly entertaining to play with.
And Maher, unlike many on the left and or right in the entertainment and or news industry, he does regularly have guests on who are not in his camp and he gives them a fair go.

Well, he just dismissed the entire Right “for a good reason” and I just wondered what that good reason was.

He may have a reason to criticize Trump, but that’s a personality criticism, not a criticism of conservative thought.

So he’s lumping all people on the Right in the same category and casually dismissing them and their ideology with a wave of his hand and no substance, “for a good Unknown reason”.

He should explain what he thinks is wrong with conservatism. Then we can have a conversation.

But I don’t think that will happen. Details are not what this kind of criticism is about. It’s all generalizations. It’s worthless. It tells you nothing. Which was what I was trying to point out.

Btw, the latest poll shows Trump leading Biden by four points in a head-to-head presidential matchup.

He does have left leaning views, but not on all things. His views on covid were in line with the right as in he is much much hands off.

“He should explain what he thinks is wrong with conservatism. Then we can have a conversation. But I don’t think that will happen. Details are not what this kind of criticism is about. It’s all generalizations.”

I think you will find he does regularly outline his issues with both sides. He is one of those rare comedians who can joke and then spin it round and be serious in the same sentence. He has strong opinions on a lot of stuff. He dislikes conservative Christians particularly. He finds them very intolerant of others views and hypocritical on a lot of issues. He also pokes fun at the extremes on the right. The MTG’s and the Lauren Boeberts. He is also pro gun restriction. But he criticises the left too. Says they are too weak.

“Btw, the latest poll shows Trump leading Biden by four points in a head-to-head presidential matchup.”
Well that depends what polls you read, but yes some have Trump ahead. But at this stage, anything can happen. I’m still picking Trump is going to lose to De Santis and then all hell will break loose. He will stand as an independent just to spite others, because he will see the lack of support as traitorous and there is nothing worse in Trumps book. Watch this space. But he also has to get through the Georgia voter fraud case. He’s on tape asking for Rafensburger to find him votes. It is going to be hard to convince a judge/jury that he didn’t break the law when there is a recording.

Trump had four years to drain the proverbial swamp. In the end, it was all rhetoric. We’ve had three straight presidents now who can’t govern – all they can do is rule through executive action and all they accomplish is increasing the artificial divide between one set of colors and the other.

Maher, at least, recognizes this, though he has clearly joined the climageddon religion.

Why are we interested in polls at this stage? The recent ones aren’t even “likely voters” polls. Saying there’s much of a swing lately is a lot like Michael Mann talking about CO2. Biden’s unpopular because he’s a terrible president. He’d get that range of numbers against any Republican opponent right now. He’d probably get that range against a talking Labrador Retriever right now.

Notice that in order to call out left wing narrative as BS you have to preface it with what is tantamount to an act of contrition . Goes like :don’t get me me wrong, I still believe in CACG”or “ or I still hate Trump but we were much better off back then” etc etc

Thank you Bill for stating the obvious. Maybe more people will get the message with it coming from someone who they listen to/watch and wouldn’t be found reading WUWT. I don’t care what Maher’s political leanings are because lately he has been attacking the woke mob and calling them out for their hypocracy.

February 6, 2023 10:07 am

Celebrity types are just doing what their agents recommend to get paid speaking gigs or more auditions or have their names on the lips of more casting agents. “Any press is good press” is their motto, whether it be decrying CO2 emissions or justifying their personal air transportation. They only really care much more about their next high paying gig than they care about their CO2 footprint….which 19 out of 20 will actually feel is irrelevant but nevertheless a good image for their on-line fan club.

February 6, 2023 11:25 am

Next is his more recent part in narrative control where he ditched his few remaining principles in the lead up to the USA midterms
