YouTube Bans Heartland Institute’s Channel Just Before Live-stream with Climate Scientist Judith Curry

Note: this is the backstory to what happened yesterday while I was moderating the live interview. We discovered while we were live that the YouTube stream was blocked, now we know why. – Anthony

By Jim Lakely

Originally published January 6, 2023 at Heartland.org

The censors at YouTube justified striking down Heartland’s channel because we supposedly uttered “misinformation” about the 2020 Election. We did not. And that is very suspicious timing.

Every Friday at Noon CT, The Heartland Institute hosts a live program we call Climate Change Roundtable. It’s a timely discussion of the latest news on environment and energy policy that differs from the alarmist perspective that echoes throughout the “mainstream” media. On Friday, January 6, 2023, we were excited to have Dr. Judith Curry as our special guest for the program.

Dr. Curry is of the most well-known and popular climate scientists in America — especially because she holds views that differ from the likes of Michael Mann and other alarmists. Dr. Curry is not a “climate denier,” as Mann calls her. She’s an esteemed scientist who has looked at the data, sees a warming world, but not an impending climate catastrophe that is all the fault of human activity. For that, she is vilified by many, and feared by even more — including, apparently, the folks who decide what to ban and when on YouTube.

Heartland live-streams every show on YouTube, Facebook, and Rumble. But the vast majority of our audience — both those who participate in the chat during the live-stream and those who view it later — watch it on YouTube. Like it or not, it’s the most-popular video streaming app in the world. Freedom-oriented sites like Rumble and BitChute have a very long way to go to catch up.

Anyway, just as we were finishing our show-prep for the episode with Dr. Curry, we got a notice in the back end of our YouTube channel that we had earned a “strike” for spreading “election misinformation” in a previous video.

So, with literally just minutes to go before we were live with Dr. Curry and undoubtedly our biggest live audience yet, YouTube shut down our channel and prevented anyone from watching it there.

The previous “offending” video was an episode of Heartland’s In the Tank podcast, episode 293, which was streamed in early May 2021 — 20 months ago. YouTube did not specify what was said that violated the terms of service and the ban on “election misinformation.” And it also did not notice for nearly two years that a live-stream that almost no one has looked at since May 2021 (and would be nearly impossible to find in a general search on YouTube) was in violation of the terms of service … until just before a live-stream with a non-alarmist climate scientist was about to begin.

It is hard to believe this was just a coincidence — that the algorithm just happened to get around to catching this supposed violation by us — and it’s just our awful luck that it happened mere minutes before we were going live with Dr. Curry.

A better explanation is this: The the name “Judith Curry” was noticed by someone at YouTube — or maybe Michael Mann, who is sensitive to such things, especially regarding Dr. Curry, and he reported the stream to YouTube — and then a human being at YouTube decided that a live-stream from a “climate realist” scientist not be allowed to happen. So, the pretext of Heartland supposedly spreading “election misinformation” was invented, the strike issued, the stream stopped, and high fives all around for a job well done by the the leftist censors at Alphabet/Google/YouTube.

But, as the character of “Mr. Universe” said in the movie Serenity: “You can’t stop the signal, Mal.” And we weren’t stopped, either. You can still view our program with Dr. Curry. We don’t just broadcast live to YouTube, but also simultaneously to Rumble and Facebook. I’ve embedded the Rumble version of the program below. [NOTE: When you click the player below, if it says “blocked by an extension” and/or “loading,” just give it a minute. It might look “broken” for a bit, and then play. If you can’t watch it below at all, watch it on Rumble.]https://rumble.com/embed/v21kw2c/?pub=b414h

Heartland is now banned from uploading any videos or live-streaming from our channel for a week — presumably until Friday, January 13 at around noon CT. We will report back if our appeal is heard and what YouTube says.

Oh, and as for Heartland violating YouTube’s terms of service by spreading “election misinformation” on that long-ago live-stream? Why don’t you watch and judge for yourself. While the YouTube video has been sent to the Great Digital Beyond somewhere, the Rumble version still exists. Don’t worry if you’re pressed for time. You don’t have to watch for very long. We talk about it at the top of the show and then move on to another topic after about 15 minutes.https://rumble.com/embed/ve0gpn/?pub=b414h

We didn’t talk about the results of the 2020 election, nor expressed any skepticism of the results. Why? Because a year earlier we discussed the infamous Time Magazine article titled “The Secret History of the Shadow Campaign That Saved the 2020 Election.” That story reported, in the most-positive way possible, on how the 2020 election was “fortified” by hundreds of millions of secret dollars by Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg and other big Democrat donors. Merely reading on the podcast what Time Magazine reported — essential if you’re going to talk about it — was enough to get a previous video banned, as absurd as that seems.

In this latest supposed “misinformation” live-stream podcast from May 2021 that YouTube just now noticed, we had to explain why Donald Trump was banned permanently from Facebook. Even if questioning the results of the election is an offense worthy of being banned, we did not do that. We talked about whether banning people for expressing views that are not crimes are worthy of having your ability to speak on a social media ended.

To help us battle Big Tech censorship, subscribe to Heartland’s YouTube channel, as well as our Stopping Socialism TV channel where we live-stream our In the Tank podcast every Thursday at noon CT. We are also post regular videos on RumbleBitChute, and Facebook — so click those links to follow us there. And if you want to make sure to never miss our audio content, subscribe to the Heartland Daily Podcast wherever you get your podcasts.

PS: I realize that today is Jan. 6. I know it’s like 9/11 and Pearl Harbor Day times 100 to the unhinged left and their “mainstream” media. So maybe they cranked up the algorithm to flag any and all vids on the platform that they might have missed over the last year or two and make sure those were flagged and removed on this “special” day. But I haven’t seen any other complaints on social media about others getting the treatment Heartland got from YouTube today.

And, again: We did not question the outcome of the 2020 Election on the “offending” podcast. We said that if Trump should be banned for what he says about the 2020 election, then it should be fair game to ban Hillary Clinton for questioning the 2016 Election and Stacey Abrams saying her election for governor of Georgia was stolen. That’s it. We did not violate YouTube’s rule.

Google/youtube has apparently amended their corporate motto to “ Don’t Be evil.” Now they censor accurate, substantive content, while spewing out scam ads & clickbait on behalf of anyone whose money is green.

So how are you going to handle this? The quick solution is to complain and have Heartland’s service restored and move on. And if it was just an inopportune misfortune caused by an algorithm, so be it. But I would dig deeper and have YouTube explain the suspicious timing. Take it a step further to punch back harder against the leftist tyrants imposing their worldview. Sue YouTube for breach of contract, demand that they identify why it happened and who was responsible for it, along with all relevant communications, and demand that all responsible are fired. It’s time for leftists to have serious consequences so they can’t hide in anonymity.

It’s pretty obvious the ban was politically motivated. The more interesting question is whether it was initiated by YouTube or initiated by say a climate alarmist.

It might well have been. Youtube has a no **** policy, which might result in certain “political” claims being censored. In the private sector, it’s allowed.

But again, what exactly got said. This was the main claim of the post, but if the offending words are in that post (as they should be), I’m missing them.

You might want to give that story a good read. One private company deciding to censor views it sees as politically inconvenient is one thing. Coordinating with the government to exercise these bans seems like a violation of the First Amendment. Mass coordination across most of the tech world sounds like a page from China’s playbook.

And you’re falling for it just as easily as the average Chinese person – only they get welded inside their apartments or sent to a prison labor camp if they dare voice any opposition.

You get SO close… Yes, the followers of Marx view all things through the lens of “class struggle.” Oppressors and oppressed.

Capitalist oppressors – worker oppressed.

White oppressors – people of color oppressed.

Heterosexual oppressors – alphabet soup oppressed.

Jewish oppressors – Aryan oppressed. (Reworked for modern times to Judeo-Christian oppressors – Muslim oppressed.)

Socialists MUST have the oppressor “class” and the oppressed “class” – even when they have to create them from whole cloth. It is the only way in which they can seize power. Of course, no mention that it will then be, forevermore, Socialist oppressor – everyone else oppressed.

Not based in fact. There is an interpretation of what was purportedly said, but no quotes. There is also no time stamp for when the offending exchange was made on the rubmle podcast. Pretty weak for a whine post that centers on it.

As to the Boy Scouts, many years ago they were sued for refusing to let male homosexuals be involved in scouting. They were sued in federal court for discrimination and the national leaders either lost, or consented to allow homosexuals to be “leaders” in direct contact with the boys.

After years of allowing what was forced on this religious based organization, they have been sued for sexual abuse of boys by leaders, surprise, surprise.

The homosexual pedophiles lawyers made out well.

Funny how with the Catholic Church, from the beginning, the abuse of children was always just called pedophilia, and NEVER called homosexual pedophilia, which it was.

BTW: When my daughter was young I coached Bobby Sox softball for years. They had rules that would NEVER allow a man to be alone with any girl. We could not even practice if the an adult female was not on the field. One game, a 8 yo girl was hit by a line drive and I ran out to check on her, and one of the women yelled at me not to touch her until a woman got there. Yep, in the infield in the middle of a game with parents in the stands.

Second BTW: That woman, who had the position with the Bobby Sox league as a “Players Agent” and was responsible to look out for the girls, lived with another woman in a “relationship” and SHE was allowed to be alone with girls. Grooming anyone? And this was over 25 years ago.

I’m only asking because YouBoob is built into my ‘Smart” TVs. If there was an option…?

Rumble has lots of live broadcasts, and none of the youtube annoying autoplay trying to force you to watch what Goober thinks you need to watch.

Most likely your ‘Smart’ TV has an option to use WiFi, or maybe even a cable connection, to access the internet, thus Rumble and everything else on-line is an option.

They do though I never messed with the internet connection till recently.
It’s a pain to use the TV remotes to put in an address!
I did some experimenting and found I could plug a USB hub into the lone USB port and found I could plug in a corded mouse and keyboard. Next step is to test a hub with my PC’s wireless keyboard and mouse. If that works, buy a couple of cheap ones for both TVs. (I want to use a hub so I can still plug in a flashdrive without needing to undo all the connections.
I asked about Rumble and TV stuff to see if old TV shows and movies were offered.
Doesn’t look like it but maybe after they grow more …

The Feds probably told them the broadcast was Russian disinformation.

Or, maybe Anthony is right, and Mr. Mann lodged a complaint. Twitter took requests for censorship from private persons. Youtube could do the same.

I think it is a good bet that all these leftwing social media platforms have been corrupted by the federal government DeepState/Swamp. Everyone of them is exercising some form of censorship. And they only censor the Right, never the Left.

Our public communications systems have been totally corrupted by those who wish to shut the rest of us up.

So come on Tom… are the media making up all the charges Trump faces at the moment? The answer is no, they are real. I would suggest you are the one who only reads one side of the story. The undeniable fact is he is staring sown the barrel at the moment with numerous real charges. Here is the list
https://www.nytimes.com/article/trump-investigations-civil-criminal.html
It seems Trump supporters go to get out of jail, is do as he asks and not believe the media, except the right wing stuff. When presented with facts say the story is made up. I have an idea Tom, why don’t you read both sides and then decide using real facts who is lying? That is exactly what I will be doing as the republicans try to nail Biden over the Hunter story. Did you notice that the radical Democrat House of Representatives withdrew their request of the “Justice” Department to prosecute Trump for anything to do with Jan. 6?

Have you noticed that after all the fire and fury from the Left over Trump, that Trump has not been convicted of anything, in fact, he has been exxonerated in two impeachments and one special prosecutor examination?

The Left hasn’t laid a legal glove on Trump. And here you are thinking he is going down. It looks like a denial of reality. Keep hoping.

” Democrat House of Representatives withdrew their request of the “Justice” Department to prosecute Trump for anything to do with Jan. 6?”
Can’t say I did. As far as I know they are pressing on with prosecution as they should given his behaviour. Have you got a link? This is an up to date article with no mention of dropping anything.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/ariannajohnson/2023/01/05/jan-6-insurrection-2-years-later-how-many-arrested-convicted-and-what-price-donald-trump-may-still-pay/?sh=74fd0a14513e

“Have you noticed that after all the fire and fury from the Left over Trump, that Trump has not been convicted of anything, in fact, he has been exxonerated in two impeachments.”
No he wasn’t. The impeachments stand. In fact he is the only president in history to be impeached twice.
“The Left hasn’t laid a legal glove on Trump. And here you are thinking he is going down. It looks like a denial of reality. Keep hoping. and one special prosecutor examination?”
No exoneration there either.
Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team indicted or got guilty pleas from 34 people. And Mueller did not exonerate Trump. If you read the report he had many misgivings about Trumps behaviour, but fell short of prosecution. The report was not kind to Trump though as he would have you believe. That was another of his lies.
“The Left hasn’t laid a legal glove on Trump
And here you are thinking he is going down. It looks like a denial of reality. Keep hoping.”
These things take time in the US, but things are ramping up now. I see a judge has just said Trump must stand trial for tax fraud in NY. That one very interesting given his company was recently found guilty. And also the documents he stole that he kept at his beach house that has the guy Smith looking into.
Oh and the election fraud thing in Georgia where he tried to steal the election by getting Rafensburger to make up 110000 votes. That one is on tape so hard to see how he will get off that. So much happening at the moment.

If that happens it will be a disaster for the right, but he wont care. If you don’t believe me here is a list of positions Trump has taken in the past then swopped at his convenience…….
Pro abortion, now pro life… fan of Hillary Clinton now not a fan… fan of universal health care, now not a fan… fan of the Democratic party, now not a fan… not a fan of the electoral college, now a fan…..

I wonder what future congressional hearings will find about the Trafficer-in-Chief, Joe Biden’s involvement in illegal activities? I have no doubt they are much worse than anything Richard Nixon did. So the Trafficer-in-Chief has to go, too.

As much as I support and appreciate the work of the Heartland Institute, the Organization needs a new media strategy. I am now sure everyone agrees that youtube is not your friend. Humans are creatures of habit and youtube became the “go to” site for posting video. That needs to change, Rumble needs to elevated as you primary source for streaming media with Twitter as a source for short “highlight” clips. The next statement is, “but youtube is where all are viewers are?” That can be changed by encouraging the alternate, send an email to all of your members that EXCLUSIVE or EXTENDED content will only be available on Rumble, embed in the video a “frame” that says now available on Rumble, mention to viewers and members that Rumble allows monetization of your content, so a view on Rumble will act as a “donation” to the Institute. I could go on with more strategies, but you can see that it is possible to be in control of your media destiny.

David,

We simultaneously live-stream both our Thursday In the Tank podcast and the Friday Climate Change Roundtable shows on YouTube, Rumble, and Facebook (as well as Twitter, for that matter). And we also upload the completed shows to BitChute, another free-speech-oriented site. When we send out pre-show emails, we provide links to the Rumble version as well as YT and FB feeds — and 95% of the people choose to view it on YouTube. So if we went only to Rumble and “canceled YouTube,” our live audience would be almost nil. A general rule of thumb is you have to meet your audience where they are, and (for better or worse) they are on YouTube.

Until Rumble improves its platform and allows better promotion of content (for instance, it’s impossible to pay for ads to promote your content and add subscribers on Rumble; you can do that on YouTube), we will continue to use all outlets available to us to get our content in front of as many eyeballs as possible. We have tens of thousands of subscribers to our YT channel. We have a couple hundred subscribers to our Rumble channel — and we’ve been regularly providing content on that Rumble channel for two years.

For sometime now media entities have created freedom of speech censorship and information rejection demeaning policies to exclude any comments that expose or contradict climate science or renewable energy false and erroneous positions claimed by energy and science incompetent Democrat politicians, business leaders, educators and “scientists” by demanding that only their views be heard. Democrat politicians are solely responsible for this effort to destroy freedom of speech in our country as a precursor to full fledged implementation of socialism. You would think that those on the left who claim they are open-minded, curious, intelligent beings would give this story a fair hearing.

Maybe somewhere deep inside, they might start to question whether the bubble they live in, carefully inflated by the tech community in California, might be feeding them a safe, politically slanted, view of the world.

Unfortunately… no. Anyone who dares question the church of zucKerberg, Gates and Bezos must be a heretic. You will not read about this censorship in The New York Times. You will not hear about it on NPR. And you will not see it mentioned on CNN. So sayeth their lord, so sayeth the flock.

Rud Istvan
January 7, 2023 6:01 pm

I would like to offer yet a second ‘high level’ perspective on this censorship.

I came late to the climate wars, and by accident, discovering an NRCA lie to Congress while researching a first book ultimately titled Gaia’s Limits, So my first post here on that was in 2011. Been on the front lines many times since.

So my second perspective is not that censorship means we are winning, but rather that it means they can never win. Censorship ultimately fails on the internet, and truth always prevails in the end. The climate truth includes:

  1. Holocene variability was greater than the past 50 years.
  2. ECS is maybe half of already falsified models, so no concern.
  3. All major previous climate catastrophe predictions have failed.

The Twitter Files revealed there was an FBI agent in the San Fran field office named Elvis Chan whose main job was apparently interfacing between three-letter agency censorship demands and Twitter. The ban orders got so voluminous that Twitter gave up even bothering to investigate those to be banned.

Before they all got shown the door by Musk, Twitter had scores of ex-FBI, -CIA, -DOJ, (i.e. the “IC” Intelligence Community) on staff.

As the bans including anything that goes against the Let’s Go Brandon! regime’s official party stands, I’m quite sure the IC also banned people for anti-climate change postings.

This is just my private attitude, but I cannot understand why people rely so much on channels of communication that they know are hostile to them. I do not know anything about facebook or youtube methods of controlling communication because I am not a participant in the process. It seems like self-flagellation to depend on a group like these to spread your findings when you know that they are working to hide or reduce the impact of your efforts. If you claim you have no alternatives, have a think about procedures that were used before “social media” became bigger. If you had a lovely, worthwhile scientific advance, you published it in a scientific journal.
