Climate change could worsen heart deaths linked to extreme temperatures

By Cara Murez, HealthDay News

Both extremely hot and very cold days take their toll on people who have heart disease, particularly those with heart failure.

A new multinational analysis of 32 million heart-related deaths over the past 40 years found more occurred on days with severe temperatures, an issue that climate change could make even worse.

The investigators compared heart-related deaths on the hottest and the coldest 2.5% of days in 567 cities with those on days when temperatures were optimal.

For every 1,000 heart-related deaths, there were an additional 2.2 deaths on days with extreme heat. There were also 9.1 additional deaths on days with extreme cold, the findings showed.

Among people with heart failure, there were 2.6 additional deaths on extremely hot days and 12.8 on extremely cold days, the researchers reported.

Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Existing studies on the association between temperatures and cardiovascular deaths have been limited in geographic zones and have generally considered associations with total cardiovascular deaths rather than cause-specific cardiovascular deaths.

Methods: We used unified data collection protocols within the Multi-Country Multi-City Collaborative Network to assemble a database of daily counts of specific cardiovascular causes of death from 567 cities in 27 countries across 5 continents in overlapping periods ranging from 1979 to 2019. City-specific daily ambient temperatures were obtained from weather stations and climate reanalysis models. To investigate cardiovascular mortality associations with extreme hot and cold temperatures, we fit case-crossover models in each city and then used a mixed-effects meta-analytic framework to pool individual city estimates. Extreme temperature percentiles were compared with the minimum mortality temperature in each location. Excess deaths were calculated for a range of extreme temperature days.

Results: The analyses included deaths from any cardiovascular cause (32 154 935), ischemic heart disease (11 745 880), stroke (9 351 312), heart failure (3 673 723), and arrhythmia (670 859). At extreme temperature percentiles, heat (99th percentile) and cold (1st percentile) were associated with higher risk of dying from any cardiovascular cause, ischemic heart disease, stroke, and heart failure as compared to the minimum mortality temperature, which is the temperature associated with least mortality. Across a range of extreme temperatures, hot days (above 97.5th percentile) and cold days (below 2.5th percentile) accounted for 2.2 (95% empirical CI [eCI], 2.1–2.3) and 9.1 (95% eCI, 8.9–9.2) excess deaths for every 1000 cardiovascular deaths, respectively. Heart failure was associated with the highest excess deaths proportion from extreme hot and cold days with 2.6 (95% eCI, 2.4–2.8) and 12.8 (95% eCI, 12.2–13.1) for every 1000 heart failure deaths, respectively.

Conclusions: Across a large, multinational sample, exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures was associated with a greater risk of mortality from multiple common cardiovascular conditions. The intersections between extreme temperatures and cardiovascular health need to be thoroughly characterized in the present day—and especially under a changing climate.

Are the doctors seriously suggesting global warming is responsible for cold weather mortality? Also from the paper;

Climate change produces both hotter summers and colder winters, rendering populations not accustomed to these unusual weather conditions vulnerable, especially in low-income areas where there may be less adaptability to changing conditions.

Strangely the message from climate scientists used to be that global warming would cause milder winters – hence all those hilarious “end of snow” predictions. Milder winters would have reduced winter mortality, and likely have reduced overall seasonal mortality, given that too cold seems to be worse for our health than too hot.

But that was yesterminute’s settled science.

Now the settled climate consensus appears to be that global warming causes all the bad weather, hot or cold. So when you feel the bitterness of a freezing cold winter, what you are really experiencing is life threatening global warming.

Since leftists want more people to die in order to reduce the global population they should be encouraging climate change. They are so conflicted and confused, perhaps we should use the Canadian model on them and apply a bit of euthanasia to ease their suffering.

And in the northern hemisphere during winter months, unless one takes supplemental doses of it, one is apt to be deficient in D3 & K2. Thus the increased incidence of heart attacks. And yes, over-exertion, as in shoveling snow can be the triggering mechanism.

They’ve always known that the cholesterol coats calcium’s surface. Calcium causes the choke point.

No doubt studies will show that your problem is more common in areas which experience extreme temperatures and extreme temperatures are caused by………….

December 13, 2022 6:37 am

It must be the warming global AVERAGE temperature that operates to produce the extremes! That seems to be the claim out there.

But wait. If you think both hot and cold extremes will intensify, how have you come to expect the average to keep increasing?

An average is a numerical result. It has no operative authority over the weather or the resulting trends.

December 13, 2022 6:38 am

About all studies about excess deaths show that cold related mortality is about 10 times heat related mortality.
Thus if the average temperature increases, the possibility of a heat wave increases and a cold wave decreases, thus with a lot less premature deaths as result.
Here one of these investigations:
https://www.bmj.com/content/321/7262/670.full
Which also shows that people adapt to the local average temperatures…

Only it doesn’t. What we have seen as the primary driver of the increase in the AVERAGE temperature is HIGHER NIGHT-TIME LOW temperatures, NOT higher daytime HIGH temperatures.

This means a MILDER climate with LESS “extremes,” NOT more.

The notion of a climate warming by for the most part an increase in overnight low temperatures causing “more extreme” WEATHER of any variety is mind-numbingly stupid.

From the study description in the abstract, I’m guessing that they never looked at actual cause of death data. Just took the number of deaths on the hot/cold days compared to the rest. So excess deaths caused by say traffic accidents, gang shootings, kitchen fires, etc. that occurred on hot/cold days would be counted as climate related. If that’s the case, the study is useless.

At best this study is incomplete. How many of the people who died during extreme weather events were already fatally ill. The number of excess deaths is so small that it could be a small additional stress induced a fatal response that would have happened anyway in the next few days. Or maybe a month or year. Many people who have fatal heart conditions die two, three, or more days after a stress causing event. I would have more confidence in such a study if it also limited the ages included to only people under 60 or maybe 70 but didn’t include people over 90. The real question is how many man-days were lost due to extreme weather. Was it days, months, or years. Unfortunately the numbers are so low that, even studying millions of lives lost, it would be almost impossible to pull that information out. As is usual, this study brings out more questions than answers.

I’ve heard the old wives tales about more people dying around Christmas for all of my life, LONG, LONG before we ever heard anything about ‘global warming’ or ‘Climate Change’! Shoveling snow MIGHT be a factor, except that people have always died, even in snow-less areas! Another OWT is the one about people dying during the full moon! Face it, people die all the time; they don’t really need a reason.

And this brings up another cause of heart attacks that differs between cold and hot weather.
Never had to shovel any of that sunshine, but had lots of the white cold stuff to move. Always lots of reports of others having heart attach’s while doing this.

Is there any truth to the belief that cold weather induces cardiac events because of overexertion from shoveling snow? ‘Cause that’s what I tell my wife when she complains about the half-assed way I cleared the driveway.

Ron Long
December 13, 2022 7:07 am

Hot and Cold? Remember the children’s fable: an old woman is walking through the snow and finds a snake, cold and unable to move. She picks up the snake and blows her breath on it to warm it up, and it revives. She takes the snake to her cottage to give him some food, and pours them both a bowl of hot soup. She then blows on the hot soup to cool it down, whereupon the snake bites her and injects lethal poison. As she lay dying, she asks the snake “why did you do that?” and the snake replies “you must be a witch because only a witch could blow hot or cold whenever they want”. Looks like we now have a more modernized version of witchcraft.

How long before Frankenweather reaches the GRB221009A (Gerb22) stage is anyone’s guess, but will depend on how soon we decide to live in mud huts in the cold and dark, eating leaves and twigs in order to keep that from happening. l can see why the climate movement are now trying to edge their bets.
The current state of the jet stream across the NH is set up for climate cooling as the smooth zonal flow across the NH appears to be breaking down. This breakdown of the zonal jet allows a increase in air mass movement in and out of the Arctic circle, while also causing more static weather patterning across the NH. lts this breakdown of the smooth zonal jet across the eastern half of the N Pacific is what is helping to set up cold weather patterning over N America.

Now as long as this set up is confined to a winter or two then its not a issue and it remains just weather. But should it start extending into the other seasons over a number of years. Then it will be setting us up for climate cooling.

It seems to me that an increase in greenhouse gases should cause a smaller temperature range with less extremes due to the fact that the places on Earth with the most GHGs are humid places with warm nights near the equator while the most extreme temperature swings happen where there is the least amount of GHGs in the atmosphere such as deserts. Is that not correct? Am I oversimplifying it?
