COP-27 Financiers and Merchants of Death

Africa resists policies that promote primitive farming and energy, and making muffins out of flies

Paul Driessen

As Americans give thanks this week for our many blessings, let us recall the Pilgrims’ and Native Americans’ primitive agricultural knowledge and technologies, the hunger and disease that were constants in their lives – and how so many around the world are not much better off today.

Much of Africa still lives on the edge, with well over 600 million people not even having electricity. Many parts of India, Asia and Latin America also face serious energy and food deprivation.

Incredibly, so does Europe. “German industry stares into the Net Zero abyss,” “Europe’s energy crisis may get even worse next year,” “Even Germany’s wind industry is sliding into crisis,” “Millions face poverty and destitution in Green Britain, as Brits pay highest electricity bills in world,” headlines warn.

Banning Russian gas imports amid Putin’s war on Ukraine plays a role and is frequently scapegoated. But the primary cause is Europe’s love affair with intermittent wind and solar, and hate-fest for fossil fuels and nuclear, amid frigid winter realities that have caused Germany to obliterate ancient villages and recent-vintage wind farms to mine lignite coal beneath them.

Closer to home, New England and New York also face a cold, dark winter, because they too have voted against drilling, fracking, pipelines, coal and nuclear power – and now demand more oil and gas from the same companies that they and President Biden want to drive into oblivion.

However, the greatest hypocrisy of all was on full-throated display at the COP-27 climate circus in Egypt November 6-18 – where attendees kept asking whether Africa should be allowed to exploit its oil, natural gas and coal reserves to improve living standards, feed families and save lives!

Al Gore preached that fossil fuel investments should be terminated worldwide, including in Africa. UN Secretary General António Guterres absurdly asserted that “New funding for fossil fuel exploration and production is delusional” and will only “feed the scourge of war, pollution and climate catastrophe” (the manmade cataclysms found in computer models and COP-27 rants, though not in the Real World).

At the COP-27 climate gabfest in Sham-El-Sheikhdown, Egypt, John Kerry said African nations shouldn’t rely on natural gas to generate electricity and modernize. (Kerry has five houses, a yacht and private jet – but that’s OK because they’re in his wife’s name, and he merely “makes use of them.”)

Even worse, it’s not just energy these arrogant eco-totalitarians want to obstruct in Africa and other developing regions. It’s also modern fertilizers — indeed, all aspects of modern agriculture – everything that can actually help farmers feed hungry people and make enough money to build a home or barn, send their children to school, and buy tractors and other equipment.

They don’t even want Africa producing natural gas and using it to make nitrogen fertilizer, which dramatically boosts crop yields and is absolutely essential if the world is to feed eight billion people – especially without turning millions more acres of wildlife habitat into marginal croplands.

Poor countries are no long going to tolerate this outrageous, intolerable, racist neo-colonialism. Nor should they, especially when they realize now-rich countries are on the verge of de-industrialization and bankruptcy – and have neither the intention nor ability to shell out billions, much less trillions, of dollars in annual “reparation, loss and damage” payments for alleged impacts from manmade climate change.

So when the UN, now-rich countries and eco-pressure groups tell them there’ll be no financing for fossil fuels and modern agriculture – only for wind and solar energy, organic farming and “AgroEcology” – poor countries should just tell these purveyors of poverty, hunger, disease and death to buzz off. That would leave poor countries largely on their own.

But they have numerous advantages that their predecessors lacked: access to the incredible energy, agricultural, industrial, economic, medical, communication and other advances of recent centuries, especially during the fossil-fueled industrial era.

They simply need to chart their own destinies and utilize these advances. Every project they undertake will generate new wealth, innovation and self-confidence to undertake subsequent projects.

I’ve written about these callous eco-imperialists – these financiers and merchants of death – many times (here, here, here and here, for example).

Unfortunately, they never repent, never revise their lethal attitudes and policies. The global following they enjoy underscores how the ill-informed but well-intended really are led around by the well-informed but ill-intended – on climate, energy, agriculture and human rights.

Their AgroEcology schemes reject virtually the entire foundation of modern agriculture, which feeds feed billions of people with less acreage and water, using monoculture farming, carefully developed and tested chemical fertilizers and insecticides, biotechnology, hybrid seeds and mechanized equipment.

Instead, they demand “food sovereignty” – the “right” to “culturally appropriate” food produced through “ecologically sound and sustainable methods, in accord with AgroEcology policies – the kind that brought hunger and chaos to Sri Lanka.

They even vilify Golden Rice, which could end Vitamin A Deficiency, blindness and death among malnourished children.

Could the insanity and hypocrisy get any worse? Sadly – yes.

European leaders have been pleading with African nations to launch oil, gas and coal projects – for shipment to Europe. In their next breath, the EU Commission says supporting nitrogen fertilizer production in Africa would “clash” with EU climate goals.

The International Energy Agency worries that half of Sub-Saharan Africa’s population has no access to electricity. In its next breath, the IEA says stopping planetary overheating doesn’t allow for more African petroleum production.

Even more colonialist, Time magazine promotes the notion that “humans eating insects could help save the planet.” The New York Times extolls a new Julia Child “Joy of Cooking (Insects).” And a group of “renowned” African and European “ecology and nutrition experts” says climate change and other considerations make Africa “the perfect laboratory” for testing new ways to feed humanity – like turning lake flies from the Lake Victoria region into “crackers, muffins, meat loaves and sausages.”

COP-27 (or FLOP-27) claims to have reached another “historic milestone” in saving Planet Earth! But it’s all driven by unfounded hysteria about manmade climate cataclysms. Let’s all take a deep breath.

We certainly face climate fluctuations and extreme weather events – but no worse than in the past, and with no replicable, convincing evidence that manmade emissions have replaced natural forces. More importantly, we have far greater wealth, far more knowledge, far better technologies and resources than in the past – to help us adapt to climate changes, survive extreme weather events and rebuild afterward.

That’s infinitely preferable to blanketing the Earth with wind turbines, solar panels, battery modules, transmission lines, mines and factories to build the things – and processing plants to make bug burgers and other delicacies, in time for climate luminaries to enjoy them at COP-28.

Can’t we just be calm and rational (and thus colonialist?) just this once? Just asking.

Paul Driessen is senior policy advisor for the Committee For A Constructive Tomorrow (www.CFACT.org) and author of books and articles on energy, climate change, environmental policy and human rights.

Zelensky just attempted to start nuclear war by firing a rocket into Poland, killing two people, and blaming it on Russia.

According to military types that rocket could not have headed in that direction unless it was deliberate.

It has also been established that Ukrainian soldiers executed 11 unarmed Russian soldiers attempting to surrender to them. And it was all filmed.

There’s your Ukrainian leadership and sense of reality for you.

The missile is an old but reliable Soviet design. The technology is good enough to ensure it travels in the right direction i.e. 180º from where it did travel.

I understand its an air to air design adapted as ground to air intercept missile, and radar guided. If it misses it’s air target it doesn’t do a 180º turn to look for it as it has very limited manoeuvring capabilities.

By the time it did its target would be long gone anyway. It will presumably self destruct or fall to the ground – in the direction it was launched.

The object of the exercise is not to fire things into the air that have a good chance of returning to kill you. Missiles are pretty reliable in that respect, light the blue touchpaper and it only goes in one direction.

The latest from South Africa. This country should be having the least problems in Africa but is facing a grim situation:

Eskom (the electricity public utility) said on Sunday that it has run out of cash to buy diesel and does not plan to order any more until 1 April 2023.
The consequence of this will be extreme levels of load shedding not yet experienced in SA.” (Carol Paton News24)

South Africa is in the opening convulsions of an economic double whammy.

At the same moment that collapse of critical infrastructure — electricity, water, sewage, roads and railways — appears to be approaching a tipping point, the skills and expertise required to salvage the situation have become critically scarce. . . . . .

The 2022 Infrastructure Report Card of the SA Institute of Civil Engineers, released this week, is a chilling warning that the collapse of public infrastructure has reached the stage that, unless addressed immediately, we face becoming a failed state.

Around half of South Africa’s public infrastructure has collapsed or is close to doing so. However, because the country’s engineering capacity has been eroded at a shocking rate over the last decade, the expertise required to rescue the situation is simply no longer available.” ( William Saunderson-Meyer Politicsweb)

My comment:
Africa with a population of 1340 million has had 258 thousand covid deaths. I predict if Africa is forced or lured into going down the renewables route and abandon fossil fuels, we will see many times this number of deaths from starvation, disease and civil wars.

I hate the lies Western politicians are pushing with climate alarmism, DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion), ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance Investing) and more. None of these address the two major problems in Africa of crime and corruption. They will only serve to compound them by pouring in billions of loans they can ill afford. I know having lived in different African countries.

I hope to see much more on the amounts of COP27 money promised vs reality.

The following Reuters report gives a perspective on the huge begging bowl:

South Africa needs about $84 billion over the next five years for its plans to cut carbon emissions, harness economic opportunities from the energy transition and support affected communities, its president said on Friday.
At the COP26 climate summit last year wealthy nations including the United States, Britain, France and Germany, and the European Union committed $8.5 billion to help Africa’s most industrialised nation cut its emissions and accelerate a shift away from coal, which it relies on for the bulk of its electricity generation.

From what I gather part will be a gift but much a loan – which is unlikely to be ever repaid. Africa has abundant coal, oil and gas but is not allowed to use these reliable sources. Instead it is being forced to transition to renewables – the installation of which will hugely benefit certain large corporations outside of Africa and ultimately paid for by the EU and USA tax payers (suckers).

Africa will be the first continent to descend into violence and revolt when even the meagre access to cheap energy (or any energy at all) is restricted or withdrawn. The ‘peasants’ have little to lose now, take even that away and they have nothing to lose.

I read somewhere that Putin said Russia’s excursion into Ukraine would expose the western elite for the criminals they are.

Notice there has been no response to the letter from Prof Berkhout from the Clintel group to the leaders of the G20 in the Indonesia meeting begging them to worry about global poverty, not global warming.

Old people should not have to be worrying about politics but I am getting angrier by the day at the harm I see out politicians causing both at home and abroad. It seems they do not give a damn about reality while they keep going on with their political red herrings.

Our government has welcomed some 100 000 Ukrainians (underreported) and they are cheering on Zelensky. Much of their power network has been knocked out. Winter has arrived. There is going to be terrible suffering in Ukraine but no politicians are pushing for a peaceful resolution.

Reply to  Michael in Dublin
November 22, 2022 3:18 am

I say further down that unless a ceasefire is called for and peace talks begun with Russia, Europe will be overrun by eight million (a conservative estimate) Ukrainian refugees.

Russia is amassing up to 500,000 reserve troops (former military many with combat experience) in Ukraine to mount a winter war on Ukraine. Putin has made this clear, he want’s to rid the country of it’s Nazi culture. That wasn’t his intention when he first intervened in what was a civil war, he just wanted eastern Ukraine, historically Russian but handed over to Ukraine by Stalin I believe.

Zelensky provoked nuclear war by deliberately firing a missile into Poland, according to military experts, that couldn’t have been an accident.

There is no good or bad in this conflict. Everyone is wrong however there is right and wrong, and the right thing to do now is stop Ukraine being reduced to rubble in the futile belief Russia is running out of missiles and their troops are somehow untrained, unwilling conscripts.

They are not, and even if they were they, as we believe British and Americans, are patriotic and many will be happy to sign up to protect Mother Russia.

Like you, I’m too damn old to be worrying about global affairs but someone has to call for some sanity over Ukraine and the west’s obsession with climate nonsense.

It is all truly juvenile.

The 1994 Budapest Memorandum agreed between Ukraine, Russia, UK and USA states:

  1. [Russia, UK and USA] reafffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the CSCE final act, to respect the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine.
  2. [Russia, UK and USA] reaffirm their obligation to refrain from the threat or the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine, and that none of their weapons will ever be used against Ukraine except in self-defense or otherwise in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.

And there’s more in the same vein.

To my mind, apologists for Vladimir Putin over the invasion of Ukraine are quite simply out of order.

“Shortly after the [2014] coup, Ukraine saw the formation of volunteer nationalist battalions that carried out attacks against the breakaway Donbass republics and terrorised Eastern Ukrainian civilians. One of them, Azov, was led by Andriy Biletsky, former leader of the Kharkov branch of “the Stepan Bandera All-Ukrainian Organisation ‘Tryzub’” and co-founder of the ultra-nationalist movement, the Social-National Assembly.

Biletsky was quoted as saying in 2010 that Ukraine’s mission was to “lead the white races of the world in a final crusade…against Semite-led Untermenschen [subhumans]”. He was a member of the post-coup Ukrainian Parliament between 2014 and 2019. Azov formally joined the Ukrainian National Guard in 2014.

The Azov regiment, that still proudly wears the neo-Nazi Wolfsangel insignia, is notorious for attacking and displacing residents in eastern Ukraine, looting civilian property, as well as raping and torturing detainees in Donbass, according to a 2016 UN report by the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OCHA).”

My emphasis.

The challenge lies in finding the imagination and political will to implement the reforms needed to unlock public and private investments needed in renewable energy, storage, transmission and enabling infrastructure…..

It must be nice to live in a rich country that has lots of sunshine and wind and where it is usually quite warm. It makes it easy to be smug and lecture others.
I live in a rich country, but for about half of the year there is excessive sunshine and for the other half very little and where the wind often does not blow for several consecutive days or even weeks. Imagine the battery storage needed for that. We also face considerable extremely cold weather with snow to cover solar panels. To heat entirely with electricity provided by wind or solar is a pipe dream.
Electric cars are just not that practical in this area because of the cold winters.
To pretend that you know what Africans, or anyone outside of your own little sphere, need is the height of arrogance. I am happy if you and WA can live the net zero dream but forgive me if I do not take your visions for the rest of mankind seriously

“Instantaneous” is the key word: it only lasted for a few minutes (if it really happenned at all). And sure, use your EV to power your house at night–just don’t expect to drive it the next day. Or maybe we can set the clock back an hour or two to extend your charging time. Perpetual motion machines, daylight saving, Green Energy and Green batteries…and unicorns.

What the world needs is efficiency, energy efficiency and monetary efficiency, which go hand in hand. The cheapest energy is the most efficient. $20K for panels, 100K for an EV or two (you’ll need a garage full of them if you expect to power your house and drive them too), it starts to add up: your effective power bill is $1000 per month, and what’s more, you aren’t doing anything Green. After Fukushima the Japanese learned that expired solar panels produce 300 times as much toxic waste (by volume) per energy produced, as nuclear energy. The ingredients of lithium batteries are typically mined by children in dangerous conditions and refined by slave labor in the most polluted places on earth.

More to the point, the necessary ingredients are in such short supply that only the rich can afford them, or ever will afford them. $1000/month is just too much to pay for residential power, much less industrial power. But the mathematically incompetent, the economically incompetent (all Marxists), the ignorant and credulous, have no problem believing in these fairy tales.

Batteries are expensive precisely because so much energy is required to produce them. England and Australia can’t manufacture their own windmills–only Asia has access to energy cheap enough to produce them competively. But obviously to Observa the utility of free market competition is merely capitalist propaganda. –AGF

Thankyou for this down to earth report Paul Driessen.
Why do they not allow papers like this to be aired and discussed at the COP meetings ?
Well we know the answer to that question .
The answer is that these COP meetings are not about climate at all .
Changing climate is being used to advance One World government .
That is fact but some here will deny .
All you climate believers start pulling your hair out and curse me but if CO2 is really going to warm the world why are these fakes at COP27 and all those other useless COP outs previously have never even mentioning Nuclear Power .
The reason is that this was never about sharing the worlds resources and lifting countries out of poverty ,they don’t want these poorer countries to advance .
Once the modern nuclear power plants are built there are no CO2 emissions .
These callous people attending these COP meetings sicken me with their hypocrisy.
They fly in on private jets, party up and I have never seen any good come out of these meetings.
I was pleased to see your mention of nitrogenous fertilizer and the other advances in agriculture that is now feeding the world .
I was brought up on a farm without mains power , a draft horse to carry fire wood ,bags of super phosphate and fencing materials .
All cooking heating and hot water was fired with wood .
I would not wish that on anybody , hard work for every one .
What a difference it made to our mothers life when a power line was erected over our farm to a coastal settlement that we connected to .
A refrigerator, electric stove and electric hot water and a washing machine.
That was 74 years ago in New Zealand and these countries in Africa and Asia should have advanced in that time .
The question I ask is what has been their problem ?

  • a) The populace of Africa fully believe rich countries can print all of the wealth necessary. What matter if their globalist bosses know better?
  • b) The very poor people of those “poor countries”, come from or have very large families and they know where they can make or buy very cheap fully automatic Kalashnikov rifles and ammunition.
  • Any garage has the equipment and metals to construct a Kalashnikov. Most of Africa has made them before to use in anger.
  • i) They also know the Western lands are very rich with money everywhere.
  • ii) They also know where the borders are to these wealthy Western lands.
  • iii) They also will love the idea that these wealthy Western lands are weak in both industrial strength and personal strength of Will.
  • iiii) Young desperate men carrying Kalashnikovs will invade wealthy countries’ borders in the hundred thousands, at the smallest. Soros has already proven that several hundred thousand invaders can be collected into one mass.
  • c) Invasions that will be larger than any invasion, ever. Think of hundreds of thousands of Viking raiders, only much more desperate.

The refugees flooding Europe will be offset partially by Putin’s kidnapping of tens of thousands of Ukrainians, including children, and taking them to Russia.

General Keane said this week the Russians are committing one atrocity after another in occupied Ukraine. Rapes, murders, kidnappings of children.

Ukrainians are fighting to put a stop to Russian atrocities and to retake the land that Russia stole from them. I think they are talking about taking back Crimea, too. I guess we’ll see what Putin has left. It may not be enough to prevent Ukraine from kicking him out of their country.

In the meantime, the murderous Putin destroys Ukraine’s power grid as winter comes on, putting millions of innocent people in jeopardy, and he is doing this deliberately. Do you defend this behavior?

If you want to know what’s really going on in Ukraine, you should listen to General Keane, instead of Putin propaganda.

‘General Keane said ….’

I’ve been seeing this neo-con madman on Fox for years. If you know of any conflict where he wasn’t all in on the use of force, or was in favor of negotiations, I’d appreciate a reference.

There have been a few isolated voices who have tried to show the situation is far more complex than the way it is described by the mainstream media. Anyone familiar with the history of Europe and Russia – indeed all history – knows that it is very messy. The loudest voices often have the least appreciation of history.

There will be many more, less isolated voices on this issue if the ‘globalists’ keep pushing for war. If I recall history correctly, ‘democratic’ Athens got its butt handed to it by ‘autocratic’ Sparta when the latter and its allies got tired of the former’s interventions.

As I’ve said for the last umpteen years and umpteen times, a major goal of the “Greens” is a cull of all those funny little black, brown and yellow people.

I wasn’t sure where the cull would begin, but I guess the aim is to start with the African Nations.

Population Matters (AKA The Optimum Trust) = Racism = Environmentalism

No wonder Attenborough is the Patron Saint of Population Matters.

WINTER is coming. Within this century, all land in blue to maroon shading above 1000m elevation will be accumulating snow from year-to-year.

All the signs are there with rapidly increasing winter minimum temperature a key indicator of the increased advection from the building northern hemisphere ocean heat. The Northern Hemisphere is beyond peak melt.

Climate modellers are so myopic about the CO2 demon that they are misinterpreting the most significant climate change in recorded history.

There will not be any wind turbines spinning when buried in snow and the solar panels will buckle under the weight of the ice.

A cartoonist ought to draw that.

A rural subsistence family can grow their rice or corn. Money to buy vitamins or medicine does not come so easily.
