Allow Children to Learn About the Arctic Without Terrifying Them with Fantasies of Climate Catastrophe

From Polar Bear Science

Dr. Susan Crockford,

This is a reminder that I have written three Arctic animal picture books, a polar bear ecology reference book, an Arctic ecology teaching guide (free) & a polar bear attack thriller suitable for teens, all of which let kids be kids.

In contrast to a book reviewer at the New York Times (30 October 2020), see image above:

Two new picture books and a novel for young readers place children at the center of climate calamity. Fittingly, they are stories of homes under threat; home, after all, is the thing climate change stalks, be it a house, a community or a livable planet. Each book offers its own lessons on how to cope with life under the monster we’ve created. The novel even shows how kids can help slay it.

No child needs this. Children need to be allowed to learn without being used as pawns in an adult political battle. Activist authors suggesting that climate change is a predator waiting to ‘stalk’ children’s homes and communities through floods and wildfires is reprehensible, not only because it isn’t true. Kids don’t need a ‘mini-primer on climate change’. Adults should fight their own battles and leave the kids alone. List of my books and links below and in the sidebar.

Polar Bear Facts & Myths, for middle-school kidsAvailable in six languages: English, French, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese. English version also available in ebook version.

Walrus Facts & Myths is available in English in paperback and ebook formats, also aimed at middle-school kids.

Free Arctic sea ice ecology teaching guide for middle-school age home schooled kids. The printable pdf booklet is free to download here.

Polar Bears Have Big Feet, for preschoolers in paperback only (because little kids need one too!).

Polar Bears: Outstanding Survivors of Climate Change, fully referenced information on polar bear ecology, suitable for teens and adults, in paperback and ebook formats.

EATEN: A novel, a polar bear attack thriller suitable for teens and adults, in paperback and ebook formats. Many readers have told me: “I couldn’t put it down.”

Allow Children to Learn

Now, that would be a start. But education is more accurately described as indoctrination with precious little room to wriggle. Diversity in everything – except ideas and thought. Part of the process involves inducing climate anxiety; feelings of (it has to be emotional) shame, of hopelessness etc etc

The education systems in the western world are a major problem. They have to be tackled.

I think Greta was right when she said “shame on you”…..just not for the reason she thought!

The US Supreme Court is trying to get a definition of diversity without much success. Somewhere in the 80s is when biology courses started using diversity in their course titles and descriptions. Technical definition in ecology profession not understood much outside, number of species=species richness, diversity=more complicated and “diverse” often using numbers and “importance.” It’s no wonder what we have now.

A google news search on “Polar Bear” today turns up about three hits out of 25 that polar bears are threatened. A few weeks ago it was zero stories. Ten years ago it was wall to wall. This very clever TV ad (YouTube) was 12 years ago.

Today’s search turned up this one:

20 Minutes With: Photographer David Yarrow
I say things as they are, rather than what people want to hear.
That gets me into a bit of trouble: The polar bear population is
      not receding.

It’s a pity that people want to hear that the bears are threatened.

That’s not what people want to hear, that’s what Google wants people to hear.

You’re right, it’s what Google and 99% of the media wants us to hear and what a lot of people wind up believing.

It is. Besides, every effort should be made to not use Alphabet (Google) products, which is nearly impossible, as they’ve become a necessary evil.

I’ve been using Neeva search engine for about a month. It’s supposed to be tracker free, ad free and non-sharing amongst other things.
It seems to give pretty comprehensive reults I’m not sure how biased they are.

However it does require you to create an account (including a free option) which not everyone will like. As Google tracks every aspect of your life this seemed a small price to pay to get away from them knowing what I search for and look at on the Interweb.

Its porn, unfortunately its what they get off on.
I tried to suggest to a couple people on Linkedin that they take a time out and seek mental health care assistance, their overwrought posts are truly off the charts, if they have children then protective services should move in.
They don’t even have the alarmism right, much less the reality.
It was all set off by a post saying things like the Polar bears and the GBR are actually doing great.
And the insane went…..insane.

Fun but sad and scary at the same time.

I would have thought, once it became public the alarmists were using a photo shopped polar bear replacing a penguin on a floating piece of ice, the alarmists would quit using the polar bear to promote their story. I thought wrong.

Dr. Susan is a great asset to the world of Reality Check. Kudos for writing the childrens books about polar bears, and tirelessly getting the word out about polar bears. However, the Socialist/Marxist crowd is not going to stop infecting children with lies because it is most effective then. I keep hoping for a Ship of Fools Polar Bear Expedition, with special opportunity to actually pose for a picture with a polar bear.

A good book has this insight …”a pupil is not above his teacher, but everyone, after he is fully trained, will be like his teacher.” Young minds are most easily molded into what you want them to become. The uestion is not, “will they be taught”, but “what will they be taught?”

ARCTIC LESSON
It’s cold
Winters are not as cold as in the 1970s
There are lots of polar bears
They love the milder winters
You wouldn’t want to live there
Too cold, and too many polar bears

Thank you for thinking about future generations of humans and polar bears. Your books are a godsend to people looking to educate without indoctrination.

The simple answer to AGW/ACC is, Global Warming is not happening when the polar ice is increasing for decades, short decreases in polar ice for a few years is normal fluctuations.

But you must tell them why the ice is melting?

The climate scares, at least going back to the 1970s Environmentalism Days has largely been engineered and led by Marxists, and those very sympathetic to the Marxist parade of issues.

This parade of issues can largely be seen in the “Original Port Huron Statement.” That statement, from “Students for a Democratic Society,” is something of a landmark, noting a major progression for Marxism from sideline / radical politics (distinctively a thing in USA at least as far back as the time of the Russian Revolution) to Popular Politics.

Arguing labor theory at the front porch or at the water cooler does not really work. Discussing the Cuyahoga River on fire (1969), and an obscured LA view due to pollution, works very well. Also Nukular Destruction.

The Marxists were strange bedfellows of sorts with The Scientists – such as Harrison Brown and Rachel Carson.

Marxists believe a couple specfic things.
One is: our prevailing society is The Enemy. We are the cause of all the oppressions you can imagine. Starvation, racism, pollution, sexism, etc. These are all direct products of Our Prevailing Society.

The Marxists also believe that all Oppression is a series of dialectics – of opposed social forces. White versus Black, Companies versus Employees, etc.

Following these central thoughts, their solution is: make people aware of all of this Oppression, make them mad, start a Revolution, and sit back and watch Communism naturally emerge as a predictable historical development.

Our Prevailing Society is the Enemy Number One. For the Marxists, their Unholy Trinity is: Judeo-Christianity, The Nukular Family, and Mutually-Agreeable Commodity Transactions (“capitalism” – a concept with a chimerical definition depending on what a Communist wants to be true).

So, you can now see: to end Oppression, we must end the Nukular Family.

How?

One: by under-cutting the Nukular Family. With concepts such as: sex before marriage is fine, “healthy sexuality” being “expressed” by people in their early teens, the formation of this “rebellious teenager” concept, etc.

Two: make people believe their parents are dumb and uninformed – by what you teach in the schools. Starting with grad school, then to college, then to high school, then to middle school (which I experienced), then to elementary school (it had not gotten to elementary school when I was there; hence I can read, write, do math, and think critically, and I still love and honor my parents).

Environmentalism is one major way they get separation between parents and children. Mom and Dad drive a gas-fueled car, and thus are killing the Polar Bears. Mom and Dad maintain a lawn, therefore are poisoning the Planet.

[Another way: “Evolution” – a rant for another day.]

When I was a kid, in the 1970s, we had “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom,” and similar Nature shows. They did not panic us with the theme of imminent apocalypic disaster. In the 1980s, there was a shift: all nature shows had to have Environmental Collapse as a major theme, and conclusion.

So, nowadays, kids cannot just love animals and nature.

So we can separate kids from parents, and then indoctrinate the kids. Now, we have at least 2 generations of parents who had this type of Marxist “Oppression Everywhere!” schooling. I get to train graduate level students in research principles and methods. A fair portion cannot follow logical reasoning well. Also, a fair portion has trouble writing a dispassionate analysis of some topic; all of tehir writing has been in the form of polemic. It is a job to un-learn them of this.

Overview of the origination of first Earth Day, April 22, 1970. Note: tie-ins with students, labor, etc. This is how you advance Marxism without being obvious.

The problem is that the people who devise school curricula are almost guaranteed to be leftists. Combine that with the likelihood that the teachers often don’t know anything about climate realities beyond what that curriculum tells them. So in the end the students are force-fed a one-sided viewpoint; yet there’s one crucial saving grace. Regardless of what the schools tell them, neither the kids nor their parents are going to give up their comfortable lifestyles to chase some consistently elusive climate goals. And when they hear that fossil fuel use still dominates global energy generation, they become even more unlikely to fall for enviro-alarmism.

“adult political battle” for sure for most of us here. But the “alarmists” would say they are teaching science.

A little off topic but interesting.
One of my granddaughters is in her last year at high school and she told me she had to write an essay on Ocean Acidification and could I help her .
I agreed instantly and told her that the oceans cannot become acid but a maybe a very slightly less alkaline .
I refereed her to WUWT Ocean Page which has a very good article on the pros and cons of acidification.
I have not seen her essay but she rang to say she received a merit award for it .
Thanks to WUWT.
