The German Klimaschau here presents a new video, this one featuring a new study on the Antarctic Ice Shelf published in Nature Geoscience:
Ice sheet “has grown”
According to a University of Cambridge press release dated May 13, 2022, “The eastern Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet has grown in area over the last 20 years, due to changing wind and sea ice patterns.”
The press release continues:
So what caused the ice shelves to advance? In the absence of atmosphere and ocean warming over the past 20 years, the dominant control was found to be a change in regional wind patterns over the Weddell Sea, which served to push sea ice against the ice shelves.
Between 1985 and 2002, in contrast, wind conditions in the same area caused sea ice to move away from the coast. By removing the buttressing effect of the sea ice and exposing the ice shelves to damaging ocean waves, stress on the ice shelves increased, ultimately leading to calving of icebergs.”
Note the press release seems to be stating there’s been no warming at this region.
The U. of Cambridge press release also adds that the advance is linked due to decade-scale [natural] changes in atmospheric circulation, which has led to more sea ice being carried to the coast by wind.
Co2- warming is not what is driving the ice activity on the eastern Antarctic Peninsula.
“Even though 85% of the coastal glaciers are advancing, we will only pay attention to the remainder”?
A play on the old Tree falling meme: If a glacier grows in the Antarctic and the media doesn’t report it, it doesn’t make a sound.
I guess the alarmists will have to come up with some CO2 involved “research” for why wind conditions change in a decadal cycle.
Send more money.
Always bout the benjamins
That ‘buttressing effect’ is at best an unproven hypothesis, but more likely a crackpot idea dreamt up by an activist in search of another trick. I once had the pleasure of inspecting at close quarters the Aletsch glacier in the Swiss Alps. Nothing is buttressing it and it is still there, it doesn’t race down hill for lack of a buttress.
How effective can floating ice shelf buttressing be when it lacks the basal friction of ice on land, and has inherited (or retained) the momentum it formerly had before entering the ocean? I believe that it may have some effect dampening surging of the ice, because of the shelf inertia, but overall, only grounded ice will probably provide an effective resistance to ice flowing out to see at a glacial pace.
!? “I believe . .”!
It follows from Newton’s First Law, but I have no empirical evidence that I can cite.
On the other hand, the literature has reported surging in glaciers that have lost their shelf ice.
Wouldn’t an Ice Shelf destroy its own grounding by carving it away ? Breaking could be a natural process to rebuild that seafloor by the transported material . Like it or not a glacial flow is an enormous erosion process.
Ed. I completely agree, fluids cannot transmit shear force, therefore floating ice that is unconstrained on its outer edge cannot resist a lateral force from the landward side. If you stand on the dockside next to an ocean liner and push against the side of the ship it will move away from the dock. Why? Because it is floating.
Duh. That analogy might be too deep for the cultists. Not sure what would convince them. It is an ideological cult.
Tell that to a vehicle’s automatic transmission. Even so, their explanation is poppycock.
Maybe I am misremembering, but don’t objects have to overcome the highest force of friction ? So it doesn’t matter if there is an iceshelf over water, the friction on land is still the force that must be overcome. Which leads me to believe that gravity causes calving of icebergs and not warming .
Might not the increase in ice at the edge be due to more snow in the interior?
Ding! ding! ding! You win! The accumulation of ice and snow at the head of the glacier resulting in a pressure head differential between the head and the foot of the glacier as I was taught in Geology 101.
It occurs to me, calving is a sign of a growing ice sheet. If a glacier is receding, the edge should retreat from the shoreline. But if the glacier is growing, m9re falls into the sea. Is that generally correct?
i will be going to Antarctica next January. i expect the nature talks on the trip to lean toward how it is melting. Can anyone suggest a good source that summarizes the Antarctic’s condition based on data that cannot be dismissed by the warmists? Thanks in advance.
I was there a few years ago and there was a theme of “AGW” will destroy all this. There was also a strong push on the ozone hole and how we had caused it all. I did try to ask some pertinent questions, but the mindset was not receptive to discussion. I hope you have a great time, the scenery is spectacular.
The Climate Alarmists discard all data. When actual data does not compliment their desired narrative, they alter the data or simply make up some new data.
It is impossible to defeat irrational belief with data because that deeply held belief is not based on data. Climate Alarmism is the 21st century mass psychosis belief based on hype not data.
Temperature charts showing 42-year cooling. Schematics of under-ice volcanoes in the Western Peninsula area. Time series of the Antarctic-area sea ice extent. WUWT past postings on record should have many pertinent points of argument; look over the site information.

“By removing the buttressing effect of the sea ice and exposing the ice shelves to damaging ocean waves, stress on the ice shelves increased, ultimately leading to calving of icebergs.”
In this case, the “buttressing effect” is shielding the shelf, which sits on
the ocean surface, from being stressed by waves. This sounds plausible,
as this situation is different than what the Alps present.
‘Plausible’ is a word the should not appear in a scientific theory. As for those ‘damaging ocean waves’: what about the ocean tides, relentless, twice every day?
Surely the peninsula under consideration is the Western Atarctic Peninsula. It would appear hat this paper concerns the Eastern Part of the Western Antarctic peninsula
Must talk about the 10% of Antarctic….by coincidence its where Britain has its research bases
Ross Ice shelf which has other research bases too, not a word
A map or illustration of the area in question would clearly be helpful for this article.
The Antarctic is just fine, more worrying is Sunak’s wobbling on the COP
Emperor penguins are now oppressive colonial penguins…
Not only that, 2 species of owl were recently discovered in Principe and immediately placed on the endangered list despite there being more owls than expected for the land occupied by the owls
Go figure

WOULD SOMEONE LIKE TO ADDRESS THESE CLAIMS, PLEASE.
They’re lying
TricksZone posting as usual.
Maybe some should read this as well:

No further comment needed: evreyone should draw his own conclusions.
Please state clearly where you think Trickzone is mistaken
All you’ve done is post a link to a news outlet with a churnalists view of the matter
Yes, further comment is required, and remember, comment is still free at WUWT
Recession of Antarctic ice – Global Warming. Growth of Antarctic ice – also Global Warming.
““It’s entirely possible we could be seeing a transition back to atmospheric patterns similar to those observed during the 1990s that encouraged sea ice loss and, ultimately, more ice shelf calving,” says co-author Dr Wolfgang Rack from the University of Canterbury.”
My conclusion is that it is all speculation. They have no idea as to what the future holds. I additionally conclude that your euronews link is pure sciency-sounding propaganda.
The ice sheet gets bigger and bigger and bigger…
… then it breaks off.
Then, the cycle repeats. #mytheory
No. This is WESTERN ANTARCTICA PENINSULA ICE SHEETS that the article is about. There isn’t a major Eastern peninsula as I see it.
The lazy MEDIA always conflates the Western/Eastern areas of Antarctica. The two are entirely different Eco systems and it causes great confusion as few people appreciate the difference.
Just look at the map and it is obvious. Why is most of the ice in the East? And where do the Tectonic sheets meet up?
I always understood that the chain of volcanoes on the East side of South America continued all the way to Mr.Erebus at the South Pole.
So if the Ice is growing despite the Volcano’s warming the water, then it must be because it’s getting colder.
Of course a fall of Snow helps too.

If you go to the published paper it clearly states this is the eastern Antarctic Peninsular Larsen A & B
So, yes you are correct, but the paper is clear
Reports like this can cause panic and depression. More please.
Arlamists worry about melt over undersea volcanoes.
Where is Griff telling us s.th. about reduced numbers of polar bears ? 😀
Hey Krishna, this global warming/Climate Alarm must be real, look no further than the Antarctic. It has devastated the Polar Bears down there. Scientists have been looking for years and can’t find any Polar Bears! That is proof positive the increasing sea ice is bad for Polar Bears….oh. I am posting this logic on Griff’s behalf as he seems to be absent.
griff has resigned from posting here because next week he would have had to register. He says so in a post from Anthony regarding this.
I like the way that something that contradicts their beliefs, even though it lasts for 20 years, has to be described as an ‘anomaly’.
Yes, it’s a matter of circulation. The remnants of Pacific cyclones are reaching the western Antarctic Peninsula. This is especially evident during the La Niña period. Looking at the extent of the ice on the eastern side of the peninsula, one can expect heavy snowfall on the Antarctic Peninsula.
Excess Pacific ice will now melt and feed the Humboldt Current with cold fresh water.
Accumulating evidence points to general cooling in the vicinity of Antarctica including (most importantly) in the ocean:

Another factoid: during the MWP which was real and global, there were elephant seals in the Weddel Sea. Now you have to go 1000 miles further north to find them:

It’s a wonder Antarctica is maintaining it’s sea ice area and not suffering from a heat island affect. There are some may people living down there from many countries. All claiming to be on a climate change study and leaving their garbage all over the place. Two Australians are about to head down there and repeat Mawson’s track and of course will get some funding, because they are also doing a “study into climate change”
But this is warm ice, not proper cold ice.
